Joanna Smith (Billboard Photo)
Seems like her fabulous single “Georgia Clay” is close to the heart of 2011 Country newbie Columbia/BNA artist Joanna Smith. She grew up in a part of the country known for farming, Georgia red clay and family values. Taking time out from the hectic pace of an up-and-coming artist she hooks up with the main man in her life - her three-year-old quarter horse Jack. Joanna opened up about Jack, her father and her overall love of horses in a feature in the current issue of Horse Digest magazine. "I think I was four or five when my daddy bought our first horse for the farm," Joanna told the magazine. "I remember I stood up on the tailgate of his truck so he could hoist me up behind the saddle so I could ride with him. I thought it was the best thing in the world." She credits her father for mentoring her about riding. "My dad taught me to ride, and taught me to respect horses. He grew up riding and is a very natural horseman."
The full issue can be viewed by clicking here, and Joanna's feature is on page 42. As she readies her new Buddy Cannon-produced single release on Columbia/BNA, due out this spring, Joanna continues to write and perform.

Holly Williams Blogs: This is how I hope to feel every single day this year (with my hair preferably looking that “undone”). Merle Haggard was resting at home in Northern California on Friday after a long stint in a Georgia hospital, according to his publicist Tresa Redburn. Haggard, 74, was hospitalized on January 17 for treatment of double-pneumonia. While in the hospital in Macon, Georgia, doctors discovered a number of other conditions for which Haggard needed treatment. Merle went to the hospital after his illness forced him to cancel a show in Macon just moments before taking the stage.
Doctors had the double-pneumonia pretty much cleared up earlier this week. The singer stayed in the hospital to recover after eight polyps were removed from his colon and for treatment of three stomach ulcers and diverticulitis in his esophagus, all of which were discovered by the Macon medical staff.

Adele's '21' tops the Top 200 Billboard Charts this week with sales of 95,144 and total sales of 6.14 million. It’s now had its 17th week at No. 1 position making it the Biggest #1 since the soundtrack 'BODYGUARD' which enjoyed a 20-week run at No. 1 on the chart (May 29, 1993) . Speaking of soundtrack albums The Joyful Noise featuring Dolly Parton moved up  #21 to #12 with a sales increase of 23% maintaining its place as #1 soundtrack for the second week and is having similar rewards to the 2011 Country Strong release which was embraced by country music fans.

For the first time since November 2, 2011 with sales of 17,153 copies Toby Keith's CLANCY'S TAVERN with a jump from #22 to #8 moves ahead of Lady Antebellum’s Own The Night (13832 copies sold, 13% drop) and Luke Bryan ‘s #3 album TAILGATES & TANLINES (13767 sales this week).  It's now become Keith's first album to spend more than one week at #1 on the Billboard Country album chart since HONKYTONK UNIVERSITY topped the chart for seven weeks back in 2005. The album's renaissance is due to the success of his Glee-boosted single "Red Solo Cup," which now stands at #15 on the Hot 100 and is this weeks Top Country Hot Digital download making it his highest-charting single in a Hot 100 career since 1993. It also benefitted by the stack-it-high-sell-it-cheap marketing gaining a 27% sales increase with physical CD priced for just $4.99 at Target stores and discounted on Amazon last week.
Also priced at $4.99 last week was George Strait's "Icon" Greatest hits going up from #118-#66 with 6,194 fans taking advantage, creating a 63% sales boost.

The Band Perry’s single With “All Your Life” is #4 on the Hot Country charts and the self-titled album also sits at #4 on the Billboard Country album selling another 12,206 copies. Jason Aldean’s MY KINDA PARTY stands at #5 shifting another 11899 copies taking it over the 2.3 million marker.

Scotty McCreery with 10,620 fans taking it home CLEAR AS DAY bagged a 7% sales increase, while his single “The Trouble With Girls” gains ground on the singles chart. Taylor Swift’s Speak Now gained 37% at retail this week with sales  at 9,495 and its now 47k short of the 4-million sold mark.

It is highly likely that Tim McGraw will debut at #1 next week with his new album EMOTIONAL TRAFFIC whilst his NUMBER ONE HITS sells 8,983 with a #8 chart position and with a tally of 545k, and the RIAA’s measurement of counting double albums twice per sale it gains Platinum status.

Martina McBride is now onto a new label in Republic Nashville and with the single “I’m Gonna Love You Through It” at #9 she’s back in the Top 10 for the first time since “Anyway” from 2007.  He latest release on old label RCA Nashville’s HITS AND MORE compilation debuted this week at #44 on the Top 200 Albums chart with sales of 7,497. As a expanded version of her 2001 Greatest Hits completists will be adding it to their collection but fans may be swayed to sample and download it’s 3 new song additions.  her ce and into our notables section as this week’s highest (and only) album debut. The record features 15 of her biggest hits and a couple un-released singles.

The Pistol Annies album with sales of 4,927 and a #80 position is less than a 1000 copies from reaching 250K.
