2012 CCMA’s Report

Saskatoon Dean Brody was the only multiple winner of the evening, taking home Album of the Year for DIRT and Male artist of the Year. It’s been a good year for Brody. His single “Canadian Girls” which he opened the show with, hit No. 1, the first Canadian country single to do so in four years. Brody, who sang about “Canadian Girls” looking sexy in their toques, choked back emotion Sunday as he was named Male Artist . Brody said later that he got into the business purely as a songwriter. The attention seemed to overwhelm the artist originally from Jaffray, B.C - “It’s kind of weird for me. I’m a pretty quiet person. To be in the spotlight and stuff, I’m getting used to it slowly.”
Brody moved to Nashville to be a songwriter and the whole artist thing just kind of evolved from being in Nashville and writing songs. Some people were like ‘Man, it doesn’t sound too bad when you sing. Maybe you should record ‘em.’”

It was the second year in a row the Smithers, B.C.-born singer won the CCMA for best album – last year he won for TRAIL IN LIFE. Now a Nova Scotia resident, thanked his wife and his band as he accepted the male artist award, recalling how his wife, Iris, missed being in the audience for last year's win.
She was back east cleaning the house we had to move into when we came from Nashville because I lost a record deal. I just want to thank you for sticking with me. I love you, thank you,” said Brody, who went on to record Dirt in Canada.
Another stellar year for the Open Road team and our talented roster, says Ron Kitchener, President of Open Road Recordings. “Dean Brody’s time has come. Thank you to Canadian country radio and all those who have supported him. We look forward to seeing the excitement on Dean’s upcoming national tour.” - Open Road Recordings Press

Jason Blaine’s win for Single of the Year was personal. He wrote “They Don’t Make ’Em Like That Anymore” for his grandparents, and they were in the audience to see it. Before the show, Blaine’s parents and grandparents walked the John Deere green carpet into Credit Union Centre. Jason Blaine’s tribute to his grandparents’ love story captured hearts at the award show.
My grandpa is that old-fashioned kind of man of few words. He just gave me a big handshake and told me he was proud of me,” Blaine said backstage. Pembroke, Ont.'s Jason Blaine song, celebrates old-fashioned values with lyrics like "He still combs his hair like Elvis, Pays cash for everything and he'll only drive a Chevy.”

Johnny Reid reflected on his early life in Canada after picking up his fourth consecutive CCMA for fan’s choice. His family moved to Ontario from Scotland when he was 16. “I think I stand and represent not only my generation but generations before me,” he said of the immigrant experience. “For me, there is no greater gift as a songwriter than to say thank you to your parents for all the sacrifices they made for you.  Saskatoon, you have always held a very special place in my heart,” Reid said after winning the Fan’s Choice Award. For the Scottish-born, Toronto-bred crooner Reid this was his fourth win in a row in that category.
For me to be able to continue the only relationship that’s ever really mattered in this business, and that’s the relationship between me and the people, to be able to solidify that by picking up an award that’s voted on by the people is both humbling and I’m very thankful for that,” said Reid.
Reid said he thinks part of his appeal is that he doesn’t try to write complicated songs.
I believe that that’s the reason why so many people connected to my music just because it speaks of love, it speaks of hard work, it speaks of passion, dedication, devotion,” said Reid. “These are things that connect all of us.”

Carolyn Dawn Johnson picked up her Female Artist of the Year award presented by Taylor Swift, who praised the nominees for female artist of the year as inspirations for young girls.

Saskatoon has already been so great,” said Carolyn. She has won this title four previous times. But Johnson said her heart was still pounding after her fifth win! She thanked Johnny Reid and Martina McBride with whom she gone out on tour with.
I’m feeling very joyful at the moment, the kind of joy that makes you cry,” Johnson said later backstage.
Johnson, who has been writing and performing off and on since the 90s, said it’s hard to describe how she got to this point in her career - “I guess you just keep dreaming and you work hard” ....“When I decided to do this I just went for it and worked my butt off and I still do. There’s never a slacker day.”

Taylor Swift did not perform, but was in Saskatoon as a gracious recipient of the first-ever Generation Award, given to an artist who has pushed country music into new territory. This was the very first time Taylor had attended the CCMA’s.
In a video montage introduction by Bryan Adams he said Swift had "inspired a new generation of fans to discover country music and to stand up and make a difference." and praised her ability to connect with fans via social media, Swift rose from the audience and touched the hands of fans on her way up to the stage. "I’m so happy to be in Saskatoon right now I can’t even tell you," she said.

To country radio in Canada and to the music fans in Canada, you guys are the ones who chose to play my songs. You guys are the ones who chose to buy the albums and sell out the concerts,” Swift said in her acceptance speech.
And you’re the ones who make me feel so at home that I can’t wait to come back and see you every single time.”

That’s the most amazing compliment you can ever give me,” Swift said backstage. She talked about performing in countries where the fans don’t know English — but they sing her lyrics. “I’m so grateful that country music has let me paint with so many different colours.” The fact that they have let me stretch musically and they’ve been so incredibly encouraging,” she said.
Paying tribute to Canadian artists Taylor said – “I felt so touched that Deric Ruttan, who I had written with, he was one of the first people that took a chance writing with me, gave me that award.
For me Carolyn Dawn Johnson has always been of the most sincere artists I'm gotten to meet. You never forget the first time that you meet your Idol, like someone you really look up to. I was really young when I first met her and she was just as sincere then as she is now. "Complicated" was my Karaoke / open-mic song, so I was really excited that I got to give her the award

Taylor had something of a classy Grace Kelly look at the awards with her hair in an elegant up-do wearing a boat-necked white embroidered dress.
WATCH - Deanna Sumanac for CBC TV spoke to Taylor backstage in a 11 minute interview before she went on stage to receive her award
Taylor also talks about her upcoming album RED, her concepts on writing songs & the idea of writing We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together - "If you've ever been in a relationship that's on and off, back and forth, mind games – it gets you into such a bad place. When you break out of that, it's like – yes!". She spilled that “6 of the songs are collaborations" and that the writing process was “Like getting to paint with different colours"..."the new approach for this album was mostly sonically"  >>    YouTube

Taylor Swift (“Princess in Red”) wasn’t the only American country star gracing the stage. Eric Church performed his hit “Springsteen” and Jason Aldean was on stage with “Take a Little Ride”.
Miranda Lambert and her new group Pistol Annies were a hotly anticipated act and wowed the crowd on the green carpet before performing as part of the ceremony. Lambert said she already knows many of the Canadian stars who also spend time in Nashville and the CCMAs are a chance to get to know a wider range of Canadian singers and celebrate their love of music together
Music, it’s my passion, it’s my hobby, it’s just what I love to do. It drives it all,” she said.

Kira Isabella, a 19-year-old from Ottawa, won the Rising Star Award. She beat out local favourite Codie Prevost from Saskatoon who was everywhere during Country Music Week, in interviews, judging talent contests and performing.
Kira has a decade of experience under her belt performing her brand of up-tempo country music across Canada. She has been unstoppable since her first recital at the age of seven when a fervent passion for belting out any song led her to enter every singing competition within driving distance from her hometown of Ottawa, Ontario.

Kira was always looking for an expressive outlet and eventually the effervescent girl began dabbling in guitar, and writing poetry and lyrics about love, life and boys. She has since penned several tracks herself and performed hundreds of times to date.
An immersed student of her craft, Kira delved into a variety of music, but it was when she discovered the likes of powerhouse country vocalists Shania Twain and Faith Hill, that she knew she was hooked on country.

She previously picked up a Country award at the 2012 Canadian Radio Music Awards – Watch performance of 'Love Me Like That'  >>  YouTube

Kira says: “My first studio album 'LOVE ME LIKE THAT' will be released on October 2nd, 2012...AND... I will be joining Carrie Underwood on The Blown Away Tour for ALL Canadian Dates.I cannot tell you how excited and blessed I feel!! Thank you so so much for your continued support!

The Stellas who are a husband and wife duo won Video of the Year for “In This House.”   >> Lyric Video
The married couple has been together for 16 years, playing in bands and writing country-pop that highlights their strong lead vocals and complimentary harmonies. On their self-titled album for EMI Music, Marylynne and Brad Stella served up personality-driven songs. The pair, whose 2009 audition for Country Music Television’s Can You Duet?, prompted judge Naomi Judd to yell "Shows over! Give them the contract now!”

For the second year in a row Hey Romeo was named Group of the Year.
I think that’s the most shocking thing because I thought last year was just some sort of fluke, that they maybe counted the numbers wrong,” laughed Stacie Roper, who is part of the trio from Alberta.
Her bandmate, Darren Gusnowsky, joked that he was expecting a recount last year. This year, he’s happy to win, knowing how hard Hey Romeo worked to get to this point. “You do it all some how and you hope that it’s good enough. And then when a night like this comes, it’s just incredible and it’s sweet and it’s wonderful because we’re not really a household name, but we’re trying and we’re working,” he said.

Doc Walker and Emerson Drive performed a brand new song ‘Let It Roll’. It was written by members of both bands (Brad and Danick of Emerson Drive with Chris and Dave of Doc Walker) and will appear on Emerson Drive’s new album of the same name to be released late October on Open Road Recordings.
