"Deep in December, the year has grown old
The days have grown dark and the nights have turned cold
And the hurts that we harbor, the debts that we owe
Are sleeping down under a blanket of snow

Gretchen Peters shares her grandmother Adele's "Hot Water Gingerbread" recipe. “You can top it with homemade whipped cream if you like, but really it's amazing all by itself. It's very easy to make, seriously delicious and will make your whole house smell like Christmas" says the singer-songwriter

Adele's Hot Water Gingerbread

1 cup butter & shortening
1 cup sugar
1 cup blackstrap molasses
1 tsp. baking soda
1 1/2 cups boiling water
2 eggs
3 cups flour
2 tsp. cinnamon
2 tsp. ginger
1 tsp. nutmeg
1/2 tsp. cloves
1 tsp. vanilla
1 tsp. baking powder

Beat all ingredients together with electric beater. Bake @ 350° in two square pans or one oblong pan for 45 minutes or until knife comes clean.

About Advent time – It is a season observed in many Western Christian churches as a time of expectant waiting and preparation for the celebration of the Nativity of Jesus at Christmas.
Advent Wreath Decoration
The term is an anglicized version of the Latin word adventus, meaning "coming."
At least in the Roman Catholic, Anglican, Lutheran, Moravian, Presbyterian and Methodist calendars, Advent starts on the fourth Sunday before December 25, which is the Sunday from November 27 to December 3 inclusive
