Canadian country music
rocked Canada from coast to coast tonight, as the 31st Canadian
Country Music Association Awards (CCMA) Awards
Broadcast took place in Edmonton,
Alberta on September 8, 2013. The final eight Canadian Country Music
Association Awards were given out in a rousing televised ceremony live from Rexall Place - Image
Canadian country music's
biggest aired on CBC-TV. CBC LIVE
brought viewers a live stream from the John Deere Green Carpet and Backstage
starting at 5p.m. ET
CBC's Deana Sumanac and Tom Power
had all the action covered, greeting all-star guests including Gord Bamford,
Dean Brody, Hunter Hayes and The Band Perry.

Gord Bamford the crowd favourite headed to the 2013
Country Music Week leading the pack with seven
nominations.
He picked up three 2013
CCMA Awards for Album of the Year, Single of the Year, and CMT Video of the Year. In total,
Bamford won five 2013 CCMA Awards, having previously shared a win earlier in
the week with Buddy Owens and Ray Stephenson for Songwriter(s) of the Year, and with Byron Hill for Record Producer of the Year.
Dean Brody also came away a winner, taking home top honour as
the Male Artist of the Year
Kira Isabella won Female
Artist of the Year. Last year Isabella won the CCMA Rising Star Award, which this year went to newcomer Bobby Wills,
who counts the honour as his first-ever CCMA Award win.
The Stellas were also recognized as Group or Duo of the Year, rounding out the awards for 2013.
The 2013 CCMA Awards
Broadcast brought together lauded Canadian country music talent from across the
country and included crowd pleasing performances by Autumn Hill, Gord Bamford,
Jason Blaine, Dean Brody, Chad Brownlee, George Canyon, Emerson Drive, Tim
Hicks, High Valley, Kira Isabella, Brett Kissel, Deric Ruttan, Small Town
Pistols, Tebey, Dallas Smith and Bobby Wills.
There was no shortage of
international stars in the crowd either, as multi-Platinum artists The Band Perry,
Hunter Hayes,
and Darius
Rucker performed live, with Hayes and Rucker also presenting awards.

The Canadian Country Music
Association® (CCMA®) continued to reveal winners of 2013 Canadian Country Music Association Awards at the CCMA Gala Dinner & Awards event at
the Shaw Conference Centre in
Edmonton, Alberta.
The event witnessed a
total of 11 awards handed out, as
well as all special achievement presentations.
Gord Bamford, who has seven nominations this year, took
home the 2013 CCMA Award for
Songwriter(s) of the Year for “Leaning On A Lonesome Song” along with
co-nominees Buddy Owens and Ray Stephenson.
Wes Mack became the first artist to take home the inaugural
CCMA Discovery Award component of
the newly established CCMA Discovery Program -- an initiative designed to
support Canadian country music artists in pursuit of a career in country music.
Corb Lund won for Roots
Artist or Group of the Year, and High Valley for Interactive Artist of the Year. The 2013
Adam Gregory was the winner of the Slaight Music Humanitarian Award, recognized at the ceremony for
his ongoing dedication and service to a variety of charitable causes.
It was a deeply moving
moment for the crowd to see the 2013 Canadian
Country Music Hall of Fame inductees celebrated at the event. Artist
Inductee Rita
MacNeil and Canadian Country
Music Hall of Fame Stan Klees Builder Award - Builder Inductee Ed Harris
were both honoured for their lifelong commitment to furthering country music in
Canada.
After the CCMA Gala Dinner
& Awards event, seven more 2013 CCMA Awards were handed out at the CCMA All Star Band Awards event,
honouring an array of talented musicians from the Canadian country music
industry.

winners in 14 categories of 2013
Canadian Country Music Association Awards™ at the CCMA Industry Lunch &
Awards Ceremony which took place this afternoon at the Shaw Conference Centre. These were the first of over forty awards
that would be presented during Country Music Week.
Deric Ruttan hosted and perform during the CCMA Industry
Lunch & Awards along with fellow artists Autumn Hill, Charlie Major, MacKenzie Porter and
Aaron Pritchett,”
said CCMA President, Don Green. “This is a true celebration of the industry professionals
who work to create, support, and promote country music, and has been a

Alberta's Gord Bamford
stole the show Sunday at the Canadian Country Music Association Awards with
"Leaning on a Lonesome Song"
— his ballad on keeping it together when you're loved one leaves.

The song won Single of the Year, CMT Video of the
Year, and is on "Is It Friday Yet?" which won Album of the Year in
the awards show at Rexall Place.
"I lost my brother-in-law two years ago and
this song is for him. I'm sure he's lookin' down," Bamford told
the audience after accepting the Single of the Year award.
Bamford's brother-in-law
Cory Mathies took his own life at age 41 in June 2011. Bamford, from Lacombe,
Alta., has said he thought often of Mathies while writing and recording
"Leaning on a Lonesome Song."
"He had a battle with addiction and
depression — something that for me that was tough to comprehend because we have
such a good life and we don't think of those things," Bamford
said later backstage.
He said he has heard from
fans who have told him the song helped turned their lives around. "That song has
saved some lives out there," he said. "It's taken people
from addiction to being sober again."
Bamford's lyrics speak of
a man who is "borderline crazy" with worry wondering if the love of
his life will decide to return to him.
The pain is "like
pouring whisky on an open wound" but it's the music, the "leaning on
a lonesome song" that keeps him going.
"Let the twin fiddles
sing, let the steel guitar twang," sings Bamford. "It's in that
jukebox filling up the room."
Bamford won Album of the
Year in 2010 for "Day Job" and Male Artist of the Year in 2010.
Last year Bamford won for
songwriter of the year for "Is It Friday Yet?" a song he wrote with
Roger Brown and Byron Hill.
This was his first Single
of the Year award and his first CMT Video of the Year award.
Dean Brody won Male
Artist of the Year for the second consecutive year. The 38-year-old Brody
was born in B.C. but moved from sea to sea, now living on the South Shore of
Nova Scotia. Brody said it still doesn't seem real.

"A couple of years ago I was still working at
the Sherwood Park Wal-Mart," he said in accepting the award.
"This
whole thing still feels like I'm on the peripheral. I have so much respect for
the artists in this room."

Kira Isabella of Ottawa continued her ascent up the ranks
of country music stardom, winning the Best
Female Artist award.
Isabella, 19, captured the
rising star award in 2012 after her runaway hit "Love Me Like That."
Isabella said she's ready for the pressure given her rapid rise to stardom.
"When I
was doing my performance (at the awards show) I was very, very nervous, but
looking down at my peers, they had the most proud smiles," said
Isabella backstage."I'm part of their family now, and that's all I ever
wanted." She beat out Terri Clark,
Jaida Dreyer, Carolyn Dawn Johnson and Michelle Wright for Best Famale 2013.
The husband and wife team The Stellas
won their first Group of the Year
award.
MaryLynne and Brad Stella of Whitby,
Ont., credited Johnny Reid with helping them find the sound and encouraging
them to record their songs outside the studio where they felt most comfortable.
"We
recorded them in the bathroom and he let us do that," Brad said
backstage. "MaryLynne
would be like, 'I want to sing' and it is like 3 o'clock in the morning and
we're like 'OK' and she goes in the bathroom and lights a candle,"
he said. "That's
where we recorded all those songs."
Terri Clark won her eighth
Fan's Choice award. The Grande Ole Opry alumnus from Medicine Hat, Alta.,
first won the award in 1997, followed up by 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2006 and
2007. She wasn't at the show to receive the award. She overhauled Canada’s men
of country Gord Bamford, Dean Brody, George Canyon and Johnny Reid to land her
8th coveted prize
Alberta's Bobby Wills
won the Rising Star award in a year
he was nominated for Single of the Year with the single "Show Some
Respect." "It's been a crazy year. To cap it off with this award is
unbelievable," said Wills.
Wills, adopted as a child,
was born in Edmonton but grew up in Calgary and got the musical bug after a trip
to Australia.
Edmonton singer Corb Lund
took home the Roots Artist/Group of the Year Award on Saturday.

Where have all the hotshot
cowgirls gone?
More than ever, Canadian
country music seems to be a man’s game — largely dominated by Gord Bamford,
Dean Brody and Johnny Reid.
Only two women were nominated in the four most
prestigious categories at the 2013 Canadian Country Music Association Awards — Single of the
Year, Album of the Year, Songwriter of the Year, Fans’ Choice.
Small Town Pistols, a duo
featuring Amanda Wilkinson and her
brother, were up for Album of the Year, while Terri Clark got a nod under Fans’ Choice.
This, unfortunately, isn’t
an anomaly. Last year, three of the nominations in those categories went to
women. (Three out of a total of 20 nominations.) In 2011, two. In 2010, three.
In 2009, five. In 1995, FOURTEEN.
“Don’t get me started,” says
singer Michelle Wright, 52, who was one of a bunch of female powerhouses in the
’90s — including Terri Clark, Lisa Brokop, Patricia Conroy, and of course,
Shania Twain.
“Quite frankly, it’s always been sort of male
dominated and so it’s nothing new from all the years I’ve been in the business

Edmonton’s warm September
temperatures wreaked a bit of havoc with fall wardrobe choices on the ‘green
carpet’ at Sunday’s Sept 8th Canadian Country Music Association awards.
After a cool and cloudy
morning, the sun made an appearance just as presenters, performers and nominees
made their way into the CCMA awards mid-afternoon on at Rexall Place.
Jeans were a popular
choice for the guys, who dressed up their denim with long-sleeved button-up
shirts and blazers, all in fall-inspired hues of black, navy and grey. It made
for a warm walk down the carpet, most of which was outside, but cool smiles for
the flashing lights prevailed.
- Emerson Drive spiffed up the look with ties and vests.
- Sibling trio High Valley from La Crete in
northern Alberta and Edmonton’s Corb Lund kept things casual with a simple
shirt and jeans combo. “I’m in the middle of
moving, so my choices were slim pickings,” Lund joked as he made
his way along the green carpet in a black button-up made specifically for
his long arms.
- Baby-faced Brett Kissel from Flat Lake,
near Bonnyville, chose shiny, coated motorcycle jeans to up the game.
- The ladies looked lovely in everything
from dresses to patterned pants.
- Tareya Green from Autumn Hill rocked a sheer, peek-a-boo black number with some
serious heels. They measured seven inches, with the heel welded out of a
steel cross.
- Carolyn Dawn Johnson strutted her stuff in a leather jacket and Diane Von Furstenberg snow
leopard-patterned pants. Ottawa’s Kira Isabella rocked a blush pink vintage
dress purchased in Toronto.
- Country queen Michelle Wright was the real green carpet stunner was in black palazzo pants, black blazer and a chunky jewelled bib necklace.
- Jaida Dreyer nominated for Female Vocalist looked very beautiful and elegant in a flowing Tammy Wynette inspired dress.
- Beverley Mahood wowed on the CCMA carpet. The ”Hope And Gasoline” singer dazzled in a sparkly white mini dress.
- Edmonton Oilers young guns Taylor Hall, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins,
Justin Schultz and Jordan Eberle also walked the carpet in casually
co-ordinated dress shirt shades of greys and blues. “We went shopping
together,” Hall joked when asked if they called each other about their
wardrobe. A nervous, grinning Eberle immediately denied the shopping date

- Kira Isabella known for the hit "A Little More Work" and a
double-nominee and had just a little more time to put a little more work
into her green-carpet look. Earlier this summer, CBC Live met up with the
singer so they could give her a jump on her CCMA Awards style. Coming up
with the perfect CCMAs hair takes effort, and in some cases an industrial
quantity of hairspray. They paired Isabella up with a Toronto hair guru: Taz Hair Co. stylist and owner Daniel Naumovski, who helped her

Terri Clark on Facebook: I woke up to the news this morning along with a hundred congrats texts
and shockingly realized I won fans choice at the CCMAs last night. A personal
prior commitment didn't allow me to watch the show. I didn't attend this year,
as I figured taking one year off after the last 18 would be good for me as busy
as I have been with several projects as of late. To be honest , I didn't think
I stood a chance of winning after all of these years. My fans are absolutely
