Singer/songwriter Jack Johnson claimed his fourth No. 1 album on the Billboard 200
(BB200), as FROM HERE TO NOW TO YOU bowed atop the list selling 117,260 copies (lowest debut sales week
since his first album) in its first week, according to Nielsen SoundScan. The
new effort is his third consecutive studio set to debut at No. 1, following
"Sleep Through the Static" (2008) and "To the Sea" (2010).
(He also opened at No. 1 with his soundtrack to the film "Curious
George" in 2006.)
Released on Tuesday Sept 17th and some
20,500 copies behind Johnson this chart week at No.2 was Justin Moore, who logged his best sales week yet with his new album, OFF THE BEATEN PATH.
It sold 96,730 copies to secure second No.1
on the Billboard Top Country Albums chart to displace Keith Urban.
The new set is his third full-length
studio album, following OUTLAWS LIKE ME in 2011 and his self-titled debut in
2009. The former bowed at No. 5 on the Billboard 200 with 65,565 units sold in
its first week and by March 2013 had been certified GOLD having sold around
525,000 copies before it was included as a Billboard Catalog title. Moore’s self-titled
album entered at No.10 with 34,000 in 2009.
"Off the Beaten Path" is
currently enjoying a No.2 single on the Billboard Country Airplay chart.
The
song "Point at You" rises
3-2 this week and he scored his fourth #1 smash, on the Country Aircheck/
Mediabase chart for the tracking week Sept 15 - Sep 21.
Joining Moore on BB200 Top 10 in the
country parade were debuts from Chris Young with A.M. at No.3 and Billy Currington’s WE ARE TONIGHT landing at No.10), along with Luke Bryan with CRASH MY PARTY
moving 4-6 (#3 Country) in its sixth week with 47,000 sales; down 11%) and Keith Urban saw FUSE, falling 1-8
(#4 Country) in its second week with 31,000 sales; down 69%. Country music last
swamped the top 10 with five titles way back on Oct. 30, 2010. That week,
Darius Rucker's "Charleston, SC 1966" (No. 2), the Band Perry's
self-titled album (No. 4), Kenny Chesney's "Hemingway's Whiskey" (No.
6), Zac Brown Band's "You Get What You Give" (No. 8) and Toby Keith's
"Bullets in the Gun" (No. 9) reigned in the top 10.
“Man, it’s been a mind-blowing week having my fourth #1
single and now the #1 Country album with OFF THE BEATEN PATH. It’s unreal,” said
Justin. “I can’t say
it enough… thanks to Country Radio and our fans… you are the best and we
couldn’t do this without you. Hope to see you on the road soon.” Longtime
friend and producer Jeremy Stover recorded the 16-track project, which features
duets with Miranda Lambert on the heart-wrenching “Old Habits” and Charlie
Daniels on the redneck anthem “For Some Ol Redneck Reason.” Justin also teamed up with Stover to pen several songs for the
project, including the playful ode to famous booties (Kim Kardashian and JLo)
on “I’d Want It To Be Yours.”
In support of the new album, Justin
will head out on the 57-city OFF THE BEATEN PATH TOUR, beginning Nov 1st in
Springfield, MO. The headline dates will continue throughout the spring and
feature Randy Houser as well as special guest Josh Thompson.

Off The Beaten Path –
Country Weekly (Rating: C+) Justin
is actually one of the few artists who can credibly lay claim to a backwoods,
rural upbringing. Unfortunately, we are beaten into submission with this notion
on Off the Beaten Path, which mostly serves up an array of clichéd, mediocre
tunes about the majesty of the country lifestyle. Why Southern-based writers
and stars continue this assault is anyone’s guess..... tunes like “Country
Radio,” “Lettin’ the Night Roll” and the title track all roll out the usual
references to dashboards, floorboards, Chevys and drinking, and it all seems so
calculated. The absolute nadir arrives with “I’d Want It to Be Yours,” a
salute, such as it is, to the female derrière that appears written by a cadre
of snickering 12-year-old schoolboys. What’s especially sad about this
collection is that there are some real gems here.....Justin continues to shine
as a vocalist, but there should have been better ways to showcase his prowess.
GAC ...Dirt roads, honky tonks and
all-American country girls each get their due on Justin Moore’s third studio
album, Off The Beaten Path. However, that’s not the whole story of the new
project as the Arkansas native moves into decidedly unchartered territory.

Working again with writer/producer Jeremy Stover (Jack Ingram, JJ Lawhorn),
Justin makes sure to dish out the rowdy throwback country he’s known for as
well as show a willingness to experiment with new sounds...... Banging open to
climbing electric guitars on “Old Back In The New School,” Off The Beaten Path
immediately sets itself apart from predecessors Outlaws Like Me (2011) and
Justin’s self-titled debut (2009). The riffs are heavy and strong, but that’s
not what makes the song exceptional; it’s the surprisingly easy transition from hard rock to old-time and
faithful traditional country in the song’s pedal steel-filled chorus. Off The
Beaten Path is a more dynamic record
because songs like the core valued “Old Back In The New School,” futuristic
Honky Tonk “Point At You” and funky hip hop-influenced title track manage a
more progressive sound while maintaining Justin’s good-ol’-boy appeal....Justin
co-wrote four of the album’s 11 songs including the boats and beer tune
“Country Radio” and the back road prayer “One Dirt Road.” Balancing rowdy
barroom rhythms with well-developed ballads and a willingness for risk, Justin
takes a significant step Off The Beaten Path with his best album yet.

STARS) For Justin Moore, going off the
beaten path doesn't mean that he's suddenly getting quirky. No, the beaten path
he alludes to in the title of his third album is the well-worn country-pop path
that so many of his peers take in 2013. Unlike Luke Bryan and his ilk, Moore is
no suburban country bro, singing songs for spring break and sports bars, but
that isn't to say that the singer is stuck in the past, either.....And, for as
traditionalist as he is in some respects, he has a deep twang that'd suit
classic honky tonk -- he's a modern guy, bearing the clear influence of Brooks
& Dunn, happy to thread in an electronic drum
loop and a bit of hip-hop on the album's title track, ready to
indulge in sentimentality at a moment's notice, gilding his uptempo cuts with
arena-country guitars. Underneath all this gloss, Moore is proud to be a
redneck -- this is especially true on the deluxe edition of the albums, which
is filled out with five songs about hillbillies, hangovers, the open road, and
beer, all rowdier than what's on the finished album .... At a moment when
country is teeming with affable guys next door, Moore is digging his boots into
the backroads, which does indeed mean he's wandering down a path few are
traveling.
Chris Young made a No.2 Country bow with A.M. selling 52,742 copies to become his highest-charting album (though not his
best sales week).
It’s his second top 10 effort, following 2011's NEON, which claimed his biggest sales
week when it started with 72,830 copies
at No. 4 on the BB200 (#2 Country). In 95 chart weeks NEON had sold 428,466 units.
To promote his new album
Chris made an appearance to television’s #1 rated national morning show, Good
Morning America (ABC), on September 18. He performed his current single “Aw
Naw,” currently #9 on the Billboard Hot
Country singles chart. During his stop in New York City, Young planned visits
to Access Hollywood, Billboard, Fox 411, People and US Weekly.
He round out the week with a run of
shows in the northeast including Big Flats, NY (9/20), Sayreville, NJ (9/21)
and Webster, MA (9/22).

Stars) Of course, the true test for any
mainstream country artist is the ability to express homespun sentiment with
songs that extol the virtues of women, whiskey, a rowdy good time or any
combination thereof. And clearly, in the stomp and swagger of “Aw Naw,” “Hold
You To It,” “A.M.” and “We’re Gonna Find It Tonight,” Young manages to
encapsulate all those attributes in unequivocal ways.....All the more reason to
believe A.M. helps fulfill the promise established not all that many years ago,
when Young’s career was just beginning to dawn.
Roughstock (Rating; 5 STARS) A neo-traditionalist in the truest sense of
the Country music style when he started, Chris Young has evolved over the
course of his four albums for RCA Records. And while for some the evolution
from neo-traditionalist to Country Soulster with a rock-edge would be seen as
'calculated,' it was more of the case of a young singer evolving into himself
as an artist......, not unlike what Luke Bryan has done with his own career
over his four albums....So, with this evolution in mind, we dig into his fourth
album for RCA, A.M. The album stars off with the lead single "Aw Naw"
and while there are elements of the
mainstream that's currently all dirt roads, fist pumps and pickup
trucks, even "Aw Naw," cannot be accused of being such a song.
Instead it's more a standard.....The album has a great mix of up-tempo 'party'
songs and the powerful ballads that have become one of Chris Young's biggest
calling cards....."Who I Am With You" is as emotional and powerful as
any ballad on the radio while "Hold
You To It" has a groovy flow to it that just screams radio
hit...Everything about A.M. screams star-making and with a hard core collection
of fans who already help him headline venues across The USA.
GAC Like several cups
of strong coffee, Chris Young’s fourth studio album, A.M., is an electric jolt
to the system. Favoring heavy guitars and pounding drums, Chris rips through 11
songs in 37 minutes on his way to hard country bliss. It’s urgent, it’s
unpredictable, and it’s totally unlike any other project the 28-year-old
Tennessee native has ever released.....Chris takes a lot of risk on this album,
but the reward is his undeniable growth as a singer and a collection that
buzzes with electric caffeine well into the A.M.
Billy Currington entered at No.5 on
the Country Chart (#10 BB200) as WE ARE
TONIGHT sold 25,787 copies.
This
marks his second top 10 album but it’s a smaller start than what he saw with
his last album (and previous top 10 set), 2010's "Enjoy Yourself."
It bowed at No. 9 on Sept 21, 2010 with 44,900
copies sold and 24,232 in its second week.

“We Are Tonight” –
Country Weekly (Rating: A-) .... he demonstrates on his latest album, We Are
Tonight, Billy is a skilled interpreter of songs with a knack for finding the
soul in every selection. Women are a big part of that approach, naturally. In
crunchy lead single “Hey Girl,” Billy plays the guy who gets tongue-tied around
a lovely lady. Right after that is “Wingman,” a humorous throwback jam about a
dude whose buddy steals the woman Billy’s been eyeing....There’s also a groovy
cover of Jack Johnson’s “Banana Pancakes,” with a rap from Billy’s collaborator
Shy Carter...But it’s the stuff like “Another Day Without You,” which pairs a
loose groove in the vein of the Commodores’ “Easy” to lines about being
hopelessly smitten with someone, where Billy truly excels.
GAC Diving deeper into the R&B tones that
subtly shaped some of Billy Currington’s recent hits like “Let Me Down Easy”
and even “Pretty Good At Drinkin’ Beer,” the Georgia-born

STARS) Listening to We Are Tonight, the
fifth album by Billy Currington, you'd never guess the country singer was
arrested for making terrorist threats against a 70-year-old tour boat captain
earlier in 2013. Based on this album, Currington doesn't have a nasty bone in
his body: he's a chillaxed bro, mildly irritated that his wingman stole his
girl but not irked enough to leave the sports bar. He's an affable dude, happy
to sing to those who will have him, perfectly OK if you're not riding his
wave...... This is suburban music through and through, with its best moments
either recalling yacht-country gone past or kind, sculpted arena-country that
makes six-string purists blanch. Currington isn't a traditionalist, he lives in
the ever-present new millennium, and what's good about his music and We Are
Tonight in particular is that none of his moves feel self-conscious; he's just
a laid-back dude enjoying singing good tunes for good times with good friends.
It doesn't matter if is real life persona might not jibe with what's on record,
because what's on record is what counts and We Are Tonight is guaranteed to
create some nice mellow vibes.
Outside the Top 25 Country albums at No.39 saw the debut of High Cotton: A Tribute To Alablama (Lightning
Rod Records), a collection released on Sept.
17th, which is from indie and Americana genre artsts
toasting the group Alabama.
This follows hot on the heels of ALABAMA
& FRIENDS (Show Dog/Universa), the
multi-artist major label artist compilation which is at #11 Country after 4
weeks on the chart.
For the
40th anniversary of Country Music supergroup Alabama an eclectic group of
artists are involved with the “High Cotton” project, ranging from legendary
gospel blues group The Blind Boys Of
Alabama to Americana favorites Elizabeth
Cook and Todd Snider to gritty
Memphis rockers Lucero to country

American Songwriter (Rating:
4/5 STARS) .... So with the band’s
[Alabama] comeback tour underway, it’s appropriate — and hell, about time
really — that the alt-country contingent give the group their due. With High
Cotton, they finally do....Because only a few of the participants in this timely
tribute qualify as A-listers there’s little chance for any stars to overshadow
the songs. .. Still, the best of the set falls to Blind Boys of Alabama’s
heartfelt read of “Christmas in Dixie,” a take that may well establish the song
as a holiday standard that can be listened to all year round. Ultimately, High
Cotton serves as a perfect primer for those who may have shunned Alabama the
first time around. No given reason to check out the original renditions, it
ought to become clear that this band wasn’t just whistling Dixie.

Songs for a sixth straight week as
his “That’s My Kind of Night”
(Capitol Nashville) leads the sales/airplay/streaming hybrid songs list.
This sixth week atop the chart marks the longest running leader by a
solo male artist in almost eight years since Keith Urban’s “Better Life”
wrapped up a six-week reign on the chart dated Nov. 26, 2005.
The longest No. 1 runs by men since
belong to Kenny Chesney and Blake Shelton; Chesney led for five weeks with
“Summertime” (2006) and “Never Wanted Nothing More” (2007), while Shelton’s
“Sure Be Cool If You Did” stacked five frames in March/April 2013.
No solo male has led for longer than
six weeks since Tim McGraw’s “Live Like You Were Dying” spent seven weeks at
the summit in 2004. Bryan’s track adds Streaming Gainer honors with 1.9
million U.S. streams, up 29%,according to Nielsen BDS.

Jason Aldean logged his 10th No.1 on Billboard’s Country Airplay
tally with “Night Train” (Broken
Bow), which stepped 2-1 in its 18th chart week. Aldean is one of seven
acts to score more than one leader this year, a list that includes Blake
Shelton, Tim McGraw, the Band Perry, Florida Georgia Line, Randy Houser and
Luke Bryan.
No artist has landed more than two in a calendar year since Bryan
rolled three straight last year.
Aldean had most recently topped the
Nielsen BDS-driven chart with “The Only Way I Know” (with Luke Bryan and Eric
Church), which spent one week at the summit in February 2013.
Since his first leader in 2006,
Aldean’s No.1 count is outpaced only by four artists: Brad Paisley (13) and
Kenny Chesney (13), ; Carrie Underwood (12) and Blake Shelton (11). Aldean
previously tied with Zac Brown Band at nine apiece during that time period. Jason indirectly had some strong words for people “runnin’ their mouths” (Zac Brown) last week weighing in with his opinion
on the criticism, and having Luke Bryan‘s back, over the ‘That’s My Kind of
Night’ hot story.
Released on
June 24, 2013 by Broken Bow Records, the country rock number “Night Train”
written by Neil Thrasher and Michael Dulaney is the fourth single and title
track from Aldean’s Oct 2012 #1 Billboard Country album Night Train. This chart
week it logged 47.709 million audience impressions (+2.976)
and received 6,892 radio plays (+411). Top local audience contributors for
“Night Train” during the tracking week were KKBQ Houston (1.4 million impressions), KKGO Los Angeles (1.2 million), KEEY Minneapolis (906,000), WNSH
New York (878,000) and WYCD Detroit
(877,000).
"When I first heard this song we were already done looking
for material for this last record, but I just loved it and thought it was worth
making room for," said Aldean. "It seems so crazy to say that
this is my 12th #1 – I promise you each one is just as sweet as the first one." (Press Release)
Aldean also appears on Country Airplay
with a featured billing on Colt Ford’s “Drivin’ Around Song” (Average Joes),
which debuts at No. 60.
Tim McGraw’s “Southern Girl” (Big Machine) jumped up 12-9 to become his 50th top
10 on Country Airplay, padding his standing as the artist with the
third-most top 10s in the chart’s 23-year history, behind George Strait (61)
and Alan Jackson (51).
Chris Young returned to the Country Airplay
top 10 for a seventh time, as “Aw Naw”
(RCA Nashville) moved 11-10 in its
20th chart week. All but one of Young’s previous top 10s spent time at No. 1;
he peaked at No.4 in April with “I Can Take It From There.” Young’s run of five
leaders opened with “Gettin’ You Home” in 2009 and continued with “The Man I
Want to Be” (2010), “Voices,” “Tomorrow” (both in 2011) and “You” (2012).
Moving a up the chart 13 slots (29-16),
for the second week running Keith Urban and Miranda Lambert’s “We Were Us” (Hit
Red/Capitol Nashville/RCA Nashville) took the chart weeks “Most Increased Audience” and “Most Added” stripes in its third chart
week. The song logged 16.421 million
audience impressions, up by 6.624
million and received 2,229 radio
plays (+1,007) thanks to a further 48 new airplay commitments (ADDS) from
the 142 BDS monitored stations.
Laura Bell Bundy returned to the
Country Airplay ranking for the first time in almost three years, as “Two Step” (Big Machine) snagged the
week’s “Hot Shot
Debut” trophy at No. 59. Bundy previously charted with “Giddy On
Up,” which peaked at No. 31 in May 2010 during a 20-week chart run. She
followed with a No.48 peak for the gorgeous “Drop On By” four months later.
