With much of
America experiencing a deep freeze, the soundtrack to Disney's "Frozen" in it’s sixth chart week blew
into the No. 1 slot on the Billboard 200
(BB200), selling 165,221 copies (After
6 weeks – 502,967) in the week ending Jan. 5, according to Nielsen SoundScan.
It rose from No. 4 last week and earns a 55% gain in sales. Frozen" is the
fourth animated film soundtrack to reach No. 1 in the chart's 58-year history.
"Frozen"
marks the first soundtrack to reach No. 1 in a year, since "Les
Misérables" rose to No. 1 on the Jan. 19, 2013, chart week. It’s the first
time that a movie and its soundtrack both ranked #1 since "The Hunger
Games" debuted in the top spot on both charts in March 2012. A movie
soundtrack was also on top as the year began in four other years in the Nielsen
SoundScan era: 1993 ("The Bodyguard"), 1996 ("Waiting To
Exhale"), 2003 ("8 Mile") and 2007 ("Dreamgirls").
("Titanic" hit #1 in the second week of 1998.)
Luke Bryan's CRASH
MY PARTY rebounded from #14 to #7 on the BB200 and returned to #1 on the Billboard Top Country Albums after a
nine-week absence. Bryan’s set sold 43,000 (down 19% on the previous week) .
This is its
eighth week on top and registered the longest run by a male solo artist since
Jason Aldean's "My Kinda Party" spent 12 weeks on top in 2011.
The previous
week’s Country #1 Garth Brooks' "Blame it All On My Roots: Five Decades Of Influences" drops
from #6 to #14 (1-2 Country) with a sales decrease of 72%.
Garth’s sales
for 2013 were up 1341% compared to 2012. He remains top on the Nielsen rankings
(1991-2013) with 69.4 million units
shifted despite the fact he doesn't sell his albums digitally. George Strait
comes in at #6, Tim McGraw (#8) and Alan Jackson at #9.

IN RED tumbled from #10 to #64.
The Robertsons’ Duck The Halls: A Robertson Family Christmas fared even worse (sales
down 92%) with a 11-92 fall on the BB200 landing at #12 on the Country chart
from #2.
Florida Georgia Line's HERE'S
TO THE GOOD TIMES dipped slightly from #15 to #16 in its 57th week but
moved up 4-3 on the Country standings . The album tops the 500K mark in digital
sales this week.
Although not
included on the Country chart FOREVERLY
by Billie Joe Armstrong + Norah Jones rebounded from #53 to #33 its highest
ranking week yet in its sixth week on the BB200 in the wake of Phil Everly's
death last week. The publicity surrounding Everly's death seems to have given
it a second wind. "The Very Best Of The Everly Brothers" sold 2,000 copies,
not quite enough to make the week's chart.
Can Country Music afford to loose Taylor
Swift in 2014 - Seems NOT!
- Country music moved 39.9 million albums during 2013, a 10.7% decline from the previous year.
- The overall industry, which sold 289.4 million
albums, shrunk by 8.4%.
- Country
track sales totalled 163.3
million in 2013, down 2% from 2012.
- The entire music industry had volume of 1.1
billion tracks, a 1.6% dip from 2012.
- The fourth quarter of 2013 was particularly brutal for country’s
year-end totals. The genre sold 11.9 million albums from Sept.30-Dec.29,
2013, a steep 28.8% decrease from 2012.
- Country track sales of 32.7 million represented a double-digit decline of 21.1%.
Through the first three quarters, the genre was showing a 4.3% track
increase over 2012 and a modest 0.7% slippage in album sales from the
previous year.
- The poor fourth quarter was expected though! Q4 2012 was bolstered by
the release of Taylor Swift’s RED album and Jason Aldean’s Night Train, which added a combined 4.1 million to 2012’s quarterly
albums total.
- Superstar Garth Brooks’ return to the industry’s main stage helped 2013
sales, as his Blame It All on My Roots: Five Decades of Influences boxed
set amassed 771,000 sales at
Walmart following its Thanksgiving Day release.
- The Robertsons’ seasonal
set Duck The Halls: A Robertson Family Christmas claimed 745,000 sales.
- Country music’s share of total album sales reached 13.8% in 2013 (down from 2012’s record high of
14.1%).
- Country’s share of digital song sales reached 12.6% of all
songs sold and 9.6% of all digital albums sold.

Florida Georgia Line with “Stay” (Republic
Nashville) logged a sixth week at
No.1 on Hot Country Songs (the duo’s second leader) and bagged a third week
atop the Nielsen BDS-based Country Airplay chart. FGL’s former chart-topper
“Cruise,” became the biggest-selling country digital song last week (since
SoundScan began tracking download sales in 2003), now stands at 6.4 million
sold.
Eric Church posted his highest
start as a lead artist on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart with “Give Me Back My Hometown” (EMI
Nashville), which opens at No.39. The start surpasses his No. 43 bow with
“Springsteen” two years ago.
The new song, released digitally on Jan. 7, is the second single from
Church’s new album The Outsiders, due Feb. 11.
Church’s history on the scorecard includes a pair of leaders, both in 2012:
“Drink in My Hand” (one week at No. 1) and “Springsteen” (two).

Florida Georgia Line became the second act in the Billboard Country Airplay
chart’s 24-year history to roll four
straight career-opening No1's as “Stay”
holds for a third straight week at the summit, matching the twosome’s longest
run atop the Nielsen BDS-driven tally.
“Cruise” spent three weeks at No.1 in
December 2012. The only other act to reach No.1
with four career-starting songs (counting only promoted singles) is Brooks
& Dunn, who launched with four straight leaders in 1991-2.
FGL has arrived with
“Cruise” (three), “Get Your Shine On” (two), “Round Here” (two) and “Stay”
(three).
“Stay” logged 44.574 million audience impressions
(+7.897 million) and received 6,765 radio
plays (+1145). The top local audience
contributors during the Dec.30, 2013-Jan.5, tracking week were: KKGO Los Angeles (1.4 million
impressions), WUSN Chicago (1.4
million), KKBQ Houston (1 million), KPLX Dallas (869,000) and KMNB Minneapolis (868,000).
Eric Church claimed his second-highest start on the Country
Airplay list with “Give Me Back My
Hometown”(EMI Nashville). It’s the “Hot Shot Debut” at No.29, adding “Most Increased
Audience” and “Most Added” honours. It logged 8.34 million impressions at 75 of the 145
stations monitored for the chart thanks to 50 new radio commitments (ADDS).
The track premiered Jan.3 on
Clear Channel Media+ Entertainment’s iHeartRadio platform, and was released
digitally Jan.7th. It’s the second single from Church’s fourth album, THE
OUTSIDERS, due to drop Feb.11. The album’s title track is Church’s highest
start on Country Airplay; it peaked during its opening week at No.25 (Nov.9)
and after 11 chart weeks it rests at No.40. Although “The Outsiders” posted a
modest Country Airplay peak, it spent two weeks at No.1 on Country Digital
Songs and has sold 398,000 downloads.

Luke Bryan with “Drink a Beer” stepped 2-1 despite a 38%
decline on the previous week (65,000 downloads sold).
In the post Christmas period with online music tokens mostly spent country
digital sales showed a marked decline.
Frankie Ballard with “Helluva Life” (Sales down 17%) logged the “Riser
Of The Week” prize with a 27-14 move.
Keith Urban and Miranda Lambert’s duet “We Were Us” (14-17)passed the ½-million GOLD certification recently
with a 17-week total of 533,000 downloads.
Joe Nichols’ #1 hit “Sunny
and 75” (21-31) has also been certified gold by the RIAA for single sales
in excess of 500,000 digital downloads. The song was the lead single from
Nichols’ debut RED BOW CD release CRICKETS. “Sunny and 75” hit the #1 spot on
both the Billboard Hot Country Songs and the Country Aircheck/ USA Today charts
in early December. The song is the 4 x
Grammy nominee’s fifth #1 single.
