Billboard Top 200 / Country Album Chart News

Disney's soundtrack to "Frozen" continued to chill for a 12th week at No.1 on the Billboard Top 200 Album Chart (BB200), selling 114,943 copies (down 56% on previous week 258,807 sales) in the week ending April 27, according to Nielsen SoundScan. "Frozen" is just the eighth album to have spent at least 12 weeks at No. 1 since SoundScan started tracking sales in 1991.
With album sales declining, saw an album making the top 10 on BB200 this week after selling a little less than 14,000 copies. That's a new low in the Nielsen SoundScan era for the numbers to secure the top 10. Bethel Music's "You Make Me Brave (Live)," which was recorded live at the Bethel Women's Conference sold 13,809 copies to debut at #10. The previous low was set in January 2012 when Nickelback's "Here And Now" ranked in the top 10 after selling a little less than 17K.

Easter Holiday retail helped to boost sales last week but this chart week the album sales dropped off.
Luke Bryan continued his dominant streak on Billboard Top Country Albums, as CRASH MY PARTY (Capitol Nashville/Universal Music Group Nashville) spent a 10th cumulative week at the summit with 18,000 sold (and 1.8 million in total sales in 38 weeks). On the BB200 "Party" slid down one rung to 6-7.

In her third chart week Martina McBride with EVERLASTING sold 4,000 (50% down on previous week) after a #7 BB200 and #1 Country debut opening with 20,880 sales.
Last weeks chart debuts are fell down the Country Album rankings:
The stunning Jessie James Decker with “Comin Home” (EP) moved 5-11 (28-94 BB200), The Secret Sisters “Put Your Needle Down” (Beladroit/ Republic) fell 18-29 (1-5 Heatseekers Albums), Ray Price’s Beauty Is...: The Final Sessions (AmeriMonte) slipped 22-42, Rodney Crowell’s “Tarpaper Sky” (New West) dropped 25-44 and the Randy Rogers Band with “Homemade Tamales: Live At Floore's” (Thirty Tigers) nosedived 11-50.

Five cast albums from ABC’s Nashville sprinkled Billboard’s Top Country Albums chart, led by NASHVILLE: On the Record (ABC Studios/Lions Gate/Big Machine/Big Machine Label Group), which made a bow as the Hot Shot Debut at No.2 Country (No.8 BB200) with 17,790 copies sold, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

Songs from the live set were featured in a special episode of the series on April 23, on the ABC Television Network, in which cast members were shown performing at iconic Nashville venues the Bluebird Cafe and Ryman Auditorium. The cast members performed acoustic performances which took an intimate look at the song writing process with the songwriters themselves, talking candidly about how this music found its way to the show and what it means to the actors and songwriters.
Among the songwriters appearing on the special were Trent Dabbs and Caitlyn Smith, who co-wrote the anthem, “Don’t Put Dirt on My Grave Just Yet,” which Hayden Panettiere and Jonathan Jackson’s characters have performed, as well as Striking Matches (duo Sarah Zimmerman and Justin Davis) who’ve co-written “I Ain’t Leaving Without Your Love” with Cary Barlowe, performed by Jonathan Jackson, Sam Palladio and Chaley Rose on the TV show. Also slated to appear were notable songwriter Ashley Monroe, solo artist and member of the Pistol Annies, who co-wrote “A Life that’s Good” with Sarah Siskind, which has been performed by Lennon and Maisy Stella and Charles Esten on the series. (See Press Release)
The album is available on US iTunes - Amazon.com

While "Nashville" has spawned three earlier soundtrack albums, none have reached the top 10 on the Billboard 200. The highest-charting "Nashville"-related album, until this week, had been "Nashville: Season 1 Volume 2," which hit No.13 on May 25, 2013.

That prime-time airing and new album release spurred interest and sales boosts for Nashville: Season 2: Volume 1 (first released Dec 10, 2013; #34 BB200 and #6 Country debut; 17,621 sales) which moved 50-15 Country, sales of 3,000 copies (up 174%) .
It also prompted a re-entry at Nos. 25 (Nashville: Season 1: Volume 2; first released May 7, 2013; #13 BB200 and #5 Country debut; sales 27,199; total sales 70,567 in 37 chart weeks) and #41 (Nashville: Season 1: Volume 1; first released December 11, 2012; #4 Country debut; sales 55,896; total sales 326,779 end of March 2014).

Finally there was a debut for Nashville: The Nashville Cast (feat.Clare Bowen as Scarlett O’Connor) at #43 Country. Concurrently, Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart sports three Nashville tracks, led by Bowen’s No. 29 re-entry with >> “Black Roses” (and titles at Nos. 40 and 46). Bowen’s song re-enters Billboard’s Country Digital Songs at No.12 with 29,000 sold, a new best weekly sum. A multi-city Nashville cast tour kicked off April 25 in Chicago.

A fourth Volume of music from ABC's Nashville is on its way, according to Big Machine Records, which revealed the new collection’s track list (April 25). Back In Black: Johnny Cash's "The Legend Of Johnny Cash" returned to the top spot on the Catalog chart which it first gained on June 22 of 2013. Cash's "16 Biggest Hits" was #1 for 26 weeks on the Catalog chart in 2003, after his death, and in 2006, when Cash's popularity spiked due in large part to the movie "Walk The Line". "The Legend Of Johnny Cash" proved that the market for Cash's music remained strong; it spent 78 weeks on the Billboard 200, with a surprising 31 weeks in the top 40 and a peak position of #5. This week marks its first return to the top 40 sellers since 2006, as it rose 58-38 on the BB200 in its 163rd chart week

New On The Charts: This week's only debut, Taylor Swift's RED made the transition to Catalog status this week in the same week that it fell off the Billboard 200 for the first time since its late 2012 release.
It had a 78-week run on the BB200, but Swift's other albums (with the exception of a Christmas EP) all spent more time on the Billboard 200 and were moved to Catalog when they slipped below #100 on the Billboard 200.

Consequently, they all had much higher initial entries on the Catalog chart. "Taylor Swift" entered at #7 in 2010, "Fearless" at #8 in 2011, and "Speak Now" at #11 in 2012. These albums eventually all made it to the top three on the Catalog chart. "Red" has some work cut out for it to match those marks, as it entered at lowly #45. It's also only the second appearance on the chart for Taylor during 2014.
Note: Billboard magazine ranks the best selling catalog titles, regardless of genre and defines a catalog title as one that is more than 18-months old and that has fallen below position 100 on the Billboard 200. Albums which meet this criteria are removed from the Billboard Current Albums rankings and begin a new chart runs on Top Pop Catalog Albums.
RED reached #1 on the iTunes sales charts in 42 countries, and reached #1 on the national sales charts in the UK (61,779 copies sold), Canada, Brazil, Japan, Mexico, Malaysia, Ireland, Argentina, New Zealand, Ireland, and Australia, among others totalling an estimated 1.46-million worldwide copies in its debut week .

Although Taylor Swift's nominated RED didn't win at the Grammys or the Country Music Assn. Awards for the chart week March 1, 2014 the album accomplished something that made up for those slights: It topped the 4 million mark in U.S. sales. By the chart week dated May 3, 2014 it had amassed 4,027,000 copies selling 2,800 units (up 25% on the previous week with Easter sales) .
All four of Swift's studio albums have reached that threshold. As of the beginning of March 2014 Swift's eponymous debut album had sold 5,419,000 copies since its release in 2006. "Fearless" had sold 6,818,000 copies since its release in 2008 (6,825,693 copies by April 12, 2014). "Speak Now" had sold 4,405,000 since its release in 2010. Swift is just the third artist to top the 4-million mark with his or her first four studio albums since Nielsen SoundScan began

Catalog Chart History - Taylor Swift:
1. The Taylor Swift Holiday Collection (44 weeks, Peak #1, Years on chart 2008-13) (BB200: 4 weeks, Peak #46, Debut year 2007)

Note: In the UK it sold only 38 copies the week of its release date, and peaked 94 weeks later at #81(12/09/2009) and has spent 3 weeks on the Official UK Album Chart.
