This year's finalists represented the depth and range of Country Music over the past five decades from soulful traditionalists to contemporary groundbreakers.

“I am very excited about this year's list of nominees," said Sarah Trahern, CMA Chief Executive Officer. "We have artists who received their first CMA Awards nominations decades ago alongside first-timers; we have critically-acclaimed songwriters and artists who have reset the bar for Country Music. This is going to be an exciting year in addition to celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the CMA Awards."

Voting for the CMA Awards final ballot ended Tuesday, Oct. 25 (6:00 PM/CT). Ballots were tabulated by the professional services organization Deloitte & Touche LLP.

Background & Nominations
For the first time on ABC's "Good Morning America," the announcement of the final nominees in six of the 12 CMA Awards categories were made live from the historic stage of the Grand Ole Opry House in Nashville, which was home to the annual CMA Awards broadcast from 1974 to 2004. The announcement was made by Bentley, Cam, and Urban. Following "Good Morning America" the six remaining categories were announced by the nominated trio of artists on GoodMorningAmerica.com on Yahoo!

Going into the awards Eric Church, Maren Morris, and Chris Stapleton topped the list of final nominees for "The 50th Annual CMA Awards" with five nominations each.
CMA newbie Maren received nominations for Female Vocalist; Album of the Year for HERO, which was produced by busbee, Brad Hill, and Morris; Single of the Year for "My Church," which was produced by busbee and Morris and mix engineered by busbee and Dave Clauss; Song of the Year for "My Church," which was written by Morris and busbee; and New Artist of the Year. Morris only receives one nomination each for Album and Single of the Year, but can receive additional trophies as producer.

After Chris Stapleton's breakout year in 2015 when he had three nominations and went home with four trophies for Album (including producer), Male Vocalist, and New Artist of the Year, he returned in 2016 with five nominations, including his first for Entertainer of the Year.
His list of nods this year also includes Male Vocalist; Single of the Year for "Nobody To Blame," which was produced by Stapleton and Dave Cobb and mix engineered by Vance Powell; Music Video of the Year for "Fire Away," which was directed by Tim Mattia; and Musical Event of the Year with life and stage partner Morgane Stapleton (her first nomination) for "You Are My Sunshine." Stapleton only receives one nomination for Single of the Year, but can receive an additional trophy as producer.

Dierks Bentley, a 20-time nominee and two-time winner including the Horizon Award in 2005 (now New Artist of the Year) and Music Video of the Year in 2014 for "Drunk On A Plane," vied for Male Vocalist; Album for BLACK, which was produced by Ross Copperman and Buenahora; Music Video for "Somewhere On A Beach," which was directed by Wes Edwards; and Musical Event of the Year for "Different for Girls" with Elle King (her first CMA Awards nomination).

Carrie Underwood was a first-time nominee in the Entertainer of the Year category. She also received nominations in Album of the Year for Storyteller, which was produced by Joyce, Mark Bright, and Zach Crowell; and Musical Event of the Year for "The Fighter" with Keith Urban. She was also nominated for Female Vocalist, which she has won three times (2006-2008).
Urban, who has been a nominee every year since 2004, received four nominations in 2016 including Entertainer of the Year, which he won in 2005. Urban's other nominations included Male Vocalist; Album of the Year for Ripcord, which was produced by Urban, Dann Huff, Jeff Bhasker, Tyler Johnson, Greg Wills, Nile Rodgers, busbee, K-Kov, Nathan Chapman, and Jonny Price; and Musical Event of the Year for
"The Fighter," featuring Underwood. Urban only receives one nomination for Album of the Year, but can receive an additional trophy as producer.

Artists receiving two nominations included Kelsea Ballerini, Luke Bryan, Cam, Old Dominion, Brothers Osborne, and Thomas Rhett.
Ballerini, who received her first CMA Awards nominations in 2015, received her second nods for both Female Vocalist and New Artist of the Year.
Bryan, who is the reigning Entertainer of the Year, was nominated again in 2016 (he received his first nomination in the category in 2013). He was also nominated for Musical Event of the Year for "Home Alone Tonight," featuring Karen Fairchild of Little Big Town.
Cam is a first-time nominee in 2016 with recognition from the industry for Song of the Year for "Burning House," which she wrote with Johnson and Bhasker; and Music Video of the Year for "Burning House," which was directed by Trey Fanjoy
Old Dominion were also a first-time nominee in 2016, contending for Vocal Group and New Artist of the Year.

A member of the Country Music Hall of Fame, Garth Brooks returned to the Entertainer of the Year category after being nominated in 2015. He has won four times (1991, 1992, 1997, 1998) tying him with Kenny Chesney for the most wins in the category. He has a career total of 11 CMA trophies and 32 nominations.

Miranda Lambert, who is the most awarded female in CMA Awards history with 12 wins and 39 nominations, received a nomination for Female Vocalist of the Year (she is a six-time, consecutive winner in the category). Kacey Musgraves, who won New Artist of the Year in 2013 and Song of the Year in 2014, was also nominated for Female Vocalist of the Year.

With three acts debuting in the New Artist of the Year category (Brothers Osborne, Morris, and Old Dominion) two are returning: Ballerini, who was nominated for New Artist for the first time in 2015 and Cole Swindell, who was a New Artist nominee in 2014. Artists can only be included in this category twice.

CMA 2016 SNUBS & REACTION

Cam was strangely excluded in the Female Vocalist and New Artist races whilst her stark, vulnerable "Burning House" (a Grammy nominee earlier this year) earned a nod for Song of the Year and Video. Odd for Cam to be shut out of the Female Vocalist race in favor of newcomer, Maren Morris whose Album on the Year nomination for Hero can hardly be deemed country (the same can be said for Keith Urban's RIPCORD). Maren replaced LeeAnn Womack as the only new nominee for Female Vocalist.
Cole Swindell has already been nominated in the NEW ARTIST category two years ago why a nomination again in favour of Cam?
2014's Best New Artist winner Brett Eldredge was not considered for the Male Vocalist category.
Tim McGraw and Keith Urban replace Luke Bryan and Blake Shelton in the 2016 Male Vocalist nominations
Sam Hunt who last year received 3 nominations for New Artist Of The Year, Song Of The Year and Single Of The Year ("Take Your Time") this year went empty handed for noms
In the Entertainer of the Year race, Carrie Underwood made her first-ever appearance in the category, not before time!
Chris Stapleton, who led the charge for traditional country with 2015's Album of the Year Traveller, and won New Artist and Male Vocalist was this year updated as a first-timer in the Entertainer nominations.

Eric Church was absent from Entertainer despite multiple nominations elsewhere.
Blake Shelton whose five-time streak as Male Vocalist ended last year wasn't even a contender at the 50th annual CMAs despite his post-divorce album IF I'M HONEST (released in May) being within the voting eligibility period of July 1st, 2015, through June 30th, 2016. It hasn't resonated enough with CMA voters or his continued presence as a pop-culture figure on The Voice. If I'm Honest opened at #1 on Top Country albums selling 153,030 copies.
51st Academy of Country Music Awards 2016 Entertainer of the Year, touring and country radio giant Jason Aldean was a notable snub for both Male Vocalist and Entertainer of the Year.
Kacey Musgraves, who has struggled for radio airplay despite the critical acclaim for her album Pageant Material was perhaps fortunate to land another Female Vocalist nom. Other critically acclaimed acts Margo Price, Ashley Monroe and the revered Brandy Clark were all overlooked.
Sturgill Simpson who apparently appeared on the initial ballot for CMA voting, failed to advance to a nomination.
Best New Artist nominees Old Dominion also replaced the now POP act The Band Perry in Vocal Group.
Joey + Rory, the husband-and-wife duo return to the Vocal Duo category one final time (and first time since 2010), a fitting tribute in light of Joey Feek's death from cancer earlier this year. They replaced 2015 nominees Thompson Square.
Mac McAnally (Guitar) will not win his 9th consecutive Musician of the Year award as Brent Mason (Guitar) and Derek Wells (Guitar) take his nomination place.

CMA Awards 2016 Report:

The presentation of pre-televised CMA Awards and honors – including the CMA Broadcast Personality and Station of the Year trophies – were hosted by 2016 CMA Awards nominee and Warner Music Nashville duo Dan + Shay.

“The 50th Annual CMA Awards” were hosted by Brad Paisley and Carrie Underwood and broadcast live from the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Wednesday, Nov. 2 (8:00-11:00 PM/ET) on the ABC Television Network.

Garth Brooks Named Entertainer of the Year
Chris Stapleton and Dann Huff were the night’s Top Winners with Two Trophies each

NASHVILLE – It was a celebration five decades in the making when winners were announced during “The 50th Annual CMA Awards” live from Nashville.
The night’s big winner was Garth Brooks who now holds the record as having the most wins for Entertainer of the Year in CMA Awards history with five.

Multiple Awards included Chris Stapleton who collected trophies for Music Video and Male Vocalist of the Year, and Dann Huff who won Musician and Single of the Year for producing Thomas Rhett’s “Die a Happy Man.”
"I never thought I’d be able to come back. And when you come back you never think you’re going to get to hold one of these [CMA trophies] again," Brooks told reporters backstage. He continued, "Awards are for younger artists so the older you get the more precious [they are]."

The winners were a diverse group with first-time winners including Brothers Osborne, Elle King, Maren Morris, and Thomas Rhett; plus podium regulars and returning winners Dierks Bentley, Garth Brooks, Eric Church, Huff, Little Big Town, Lori McKenna, Chris Stapleton, and Carrie Underwood.

Thomas Rhett won the first trophy of the night for Single of the Year for “Die a Happy Man,” which was produced by Huff and Jesse Frasure and mix engineered by Justin Niebank. The second single from his album TANGLED UP, the song spent 17 weeks at No. 1 on Billboard Hot Country Songs chart. Rhett was has received 4 CMA nominations previously missing out twice for New Artist of the Year (2014 won by Brett Eldredge; 2015 won by Chris Stapleton)

CMA Song of the Year was awarded to Lori McKenna for her solo composition “Humble and Kind.”
2 out of 2!: McKenna won the same category in 2015 for “Girl Crush.” The song was essentially a primer for McKenna’s five children – a list of life lessons. McGraw performed the song with emotional intensity during the broadcast.

Maren Morris was named CMA New Artist of the Year – her first CMA Award. The “My Church” firebrand was emotional as she thanked the audience and recounted how just one year ago, she watched the broadcast from a bar down the street. Morris moved to Nashville at 20 with a goal of becoming a working songwriter. She eventually changed her mind and spent 2016 touring with Keith Urban.

Eric Church won his second CMA Album of the Year trophy for MR. MISUNDERSTOOD, which was produced by Jay Joyce and Arturo Buenahora, Jr. A surprise album that was announced and released during “The 49th Annual CMA Awards,” Mr. Misunderstood debuted at No. 3 and peaked at No. 2 on Billboard’s Top Country Album chart in November 2015.
Church has received 22 CMA nominations, previously winning Album of the Year (2012, CHIEF; EMI Record Nashville) and Musical Event of the Year (2015; "Raise 'Em Up" - Keith Urban featuring Eric Church - Hit Red Records/Capitol Records Nashville)

Brothers Osborne were also first time winners, taking home the CMA Award for Vocal Duo of the Year. Real-life brothers John and TJ Osborne first honed their sound melding Country, blues, and Southern rock during all-night jam sessions while growing up in the small fishing town of Deale, Md.
Brothers Osborne have received 3 CMA nominations missing out in 2015 (Vocal Duo of the Year won by Florida Georgia Line)

Taking home their fifth consecutive Vocal Group of the Year title was Little Big Town. The quartet performed their latest single, “Better Man,” during the broadcast and recently revealed the song was penned by former CMA Female Vocalist and Entertainer of the Year Taylor Swift.
Little Big Town have received 22 CMA nominations winning Single of the Year twice (2012 Pontoon - Capitol Records Nashville; 2015 "Girl Crush" - Capitol Records Nashville) and Vocal Group of the Year (2012-2016)

Carrie Underwood won her fourth CMA Female Vocalist of the Year trophy. She won the Female Vocalist category in 2006-2008. After thrilling fans across the U.S. with her “The Storyteller Tour” this year, Underwood will do the same for fans in Australia and New Zealand when she joins Keith Urban’s world tour in December.
Carrie has received 27 CMA nominations and won six, also previously winning Horizon Award (2006) and Single of the Year (2007 “Before He Cheats” - 19 Recordings Limited/Arista)

Chris Stapleton won CMA Male Vocalist of the Year for the second year in a row. Earlier in the day, he won CMA Music Video of the Year with director Tim Mattia for “Fire Away.” Stapleton plays a supporting role as a bartender in the harrowing video, which follows a young couple from happy times through anguish as the woman makes two suicide attempts. This is Stapleton’s first win in the Music Video category.
"Everything happened very organically with that video," Stapleton said to press backstage. "It's something that hopefully has value beyond me and the video. That's why I like it."
Chris Stapleton has received 9 CMA nominations and won six including Album of the Year (2015 "Traveller" - Mercury Nashville
Album of the Year/ Production Chris Stapleton)

Taylor Swift was on hand to present the top trophy this year to Garth Brooks, who is now the greatest Entertainer of the Year in CMA Awards history with five wins (1991, 1992, 1997, 1998, 2016).
Garth Brooks has received 32 CMA nominations and won 12. His first were Horizon Award (1990),  Music Video of the Year (1990 The Dance; directed by John Lloyd Miller) and has won Album of the Year twice (1991NO FENCES - Capitol Nashville; 1992 ROPIN' THE WIND - Capitol Nashville) also roping in Music Video of the Year (1991 The Thunder Rolls; directed by Bud Schaetzle) and Single of the Year (1991   “Friends In Low Places” - Capitol Nashville)

During the broadcast Dolly Parton was presented the Willie Nelson Lifetime Achievement Award in a moving tribute introduced by “9 to 5” co-star Lily Tomlin, with Martina McBride, Kacey Musgraves, Jennifer Nettles, Pentatonix, Reba, and Carrie Underwood.
"Wow, what a tribute," Parton said. "That was so touching. I would have cried but I didn't want to mess up my eyelashes."

Kenny Chesney received the CMA Pinnacle Award in a presentation hosted by retired NFL favorite Peyton Manning. The Pinnacle Award has only been presented three times in CMA history. Previous recipients include Brooks and Swift.
Kenny has received 46 CMA nominations, winning nine, voted Entertainer of the Year four times (2004, 2006-2008) and his last nominated win was for Musical Event of the Year in 2012 (“Feel Like A Rock Star”; Kenny Chesney duet with Tim McGraw)

Dierks Bentley won Musical Event of the Year with Elle King for “Different for Girls,” which was announced on ABC's “Good Morning America” by anchor Lara Spencer. Written as a testament to women’s emotional strength, the song became what Bentley called a “centerpiece” of his recent album Black. The song peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard Country Airplay chart in September. This marks Bentley’s third CMA Award (18 CMA nominations; previously won Horizon Award 2005; Music Video “Drunk On A Plane” in 2014) and King’s first.

In pre-televised Awards hosted by duo Dan + Shay, Dann Huff was named CMA Musician of the Year. Huff has been nominated 17 times in the category and this is his third win including 2001 and 2004.
