Billboard Top 200 / Country Album Chart News (Chart issue week of February 18, 2017)

The Billboard 200 chart measures multi-metric album consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA).

Hip-hop trio Migos scored its first No.1 on the Billboard Top 200 Albums Chart (BB200) with the arrival of CULTURE. The set — which was led by the No.1 Billboard Hot 100 single “Bad and Boujee,” featuring Lil Uzi Vert — launched atop the list with 131,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending Feb. 2, according to Nielsen Music. Culture, Migos’ second album, was released on Jan. 27 through Quality Control/300 Entertainment.
The act had previously peaked as high as No.17 on the Billboard 200 with its debut set, YUNG RICH NATION, in August 2015.
Culture’s debut was driven by streams of its songs, as streaming equivalent album units accounted for 59% of the set’s first-week total (77,000 of 131,000). The album sold 44,000 in traditional album sales and earned 10,000 in track equivalent album units.

Brantley Gilbert with THE DEVIL DON’T SLEEP made a debut at No. 2 on the new Billboard 200, with 77,000 units earned in its first week (66,000 from traditional album sales — it was also the top selling album of the week).
It’s the third top five-charting effort for the country singer, following JUST AS I AM (No. 2 in 2014) and HALFWAY TO HEAVEN (No. 4 in 2011).
The Devil Don’t Sleep marked the highest-charting country title on the Billboard 200 since the Nov. 19, 2016-dated tally, when Kenny Chesney’s COSMIC HALLELUJAH debuted and peaked at No. 2. Gilbert’s new album also starts at No. 1 on the Top Country Albums chart, securing the artist his second leader on that list, after Just as I Am.
Brantley Gilbert 'The Devil Don't Sleep' Is #1 Album

Billboard Top Country Albums (Chart issue week of February 18, 2017)
Top Country Albums now ranks the most popular country albums of the week, as compiled by Nielsen Music, based on multi-metric consumption (blending traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA), and streaming equivalent albums (SEA)).
10 digital track sales from an album = 1 track equivalent album (TEA) “sale”
1,500 on demand song streams from an album to one streaming equivalent album (SEA) “sale”.
Nielsen Music compiles the sales and streaming data. Billboard will continue to publish pure album sales charts (subscription to billboard biz ), exclusively comprising Nielsen’s sales data.

Brantley Gilbert with his fourth studio THE DEVIL DON’T SLEEP (Valory/Big Machine Label Group) debuted at No.1 on Billboard’s Top Country Albums Chart (dated Feb. 18), shifting 77,000 equivalent album consumption units in the week ending Feb. 2, according to Nielsen Music. Of that sum, 66,214 were from traditional album sales, making the set the top-selling album across all genres.
Gilbert had a hand in writing all 16 tracks on the Dann Huff-produced The Devil Don’t Sleep including lead single “The Weekend,” which hurtled 14-9 to become Gilbert’s fifth top 10 on Hot Country Songs.

Chart History: Brantley Gilbert scored his first No.1 on Billboard’s Top Country Albums chart, when his third studio album, JUST AS I AM (Valory/Big Machine Label Group), landed at No.2 on the BB200 and at the country summit with 211,288 copies sold.

Gilbert previously charted as high as No.2 with his breakthrough second album, 2011’s HALFWAY TO HEAVEN, which crossed the PLATINUM 1 million-sold mark in April 2014. That album when it was first released on March 16, 2010 opened at No.112 on the BB200 selling 4,851 copies, the week when the #1 Billboard album belonged to Lady Antebellum’s monster NEED YOU NOW which posted 93,061 sales. “Halfway To Heaven” dropped off the BB200 after a week, returned for three more weeks in 2011.
Originally a release for Average Joes Entertainment in 2010, Gilbert then took the album to The Valory Music Company and re-issued it with a Deluxe Edition featuring a remixed album and re-recorded version of “Country Must Be Country Wide” along with three other new tracks produced by Dann Huff. The deluxe version opened with sales of 50,822 copies on September 21, 2011 (chart issue week of October 1, 2011; taking its total to 185,377) making a No.4 BB200 re-entry and a #2 Country Album.
By March 21, 2012 it had reached the 0.5 million GOLD status. By August 31, 2013 it finally moved to Catalog status having logged 105 weeks on Billboard 200 (#4 peak) with 916K total sales. The chart week of May 31, 2014 Gilbert's "Halfway To Heaven" was still selling 4,500 copies and had sold Platinum at retail (1,021,00 Total sales) and stood at No.68 on the Billboard 200 which was its highest position so far during its Catalog Album run.
Gilbert first charted on the independently-distributed label Average Joes back in 2009 with his debut album, "A MODERN DAY PRODIGAL SON" (released Oct 27, 2009). Some 5 months later by the time of the chart week of April 3, 2010 it was at #71 on the Country chart selling 554 copies (9,544 total)

Critical reception for Brantley Gilbert’s The Devil Don't Sleep:
16 Tracks/ Time: 1:00:21 (26 Tracks Deluxe) Amazon UK - UK iTunes - Amazon.com

Sounds Like Nashville (Chuck Dauphin; Rating: Positive).. You know that old saying about not judging a book by its cover? I think that term would definitely apply to Brantley Gilbert. It’s easy to label Gilbert as an edgy Southern Rocker, with all of his tattoos and chains, and never get to the true heart of who he is. If you do so, you are making a serious
mistake....There are plenty of opportunities that Gilbert takes to show his attitude here, but even those are a little different than fans are used to. In “Bullet In A Bonfire,” his anger at his target is more than warranted, and “Bro Code” is a friendly warning to a pal that he might just be in danger of losing his girl if he doesn’t take care of business. Even in those moments, however, he does stretch some. “The Weekend” is about as adventurous as he’s ever gotten from a production standpoint, and “In My Head” is pure ear candy with its’ seductive melody...and the closing “Three Feet Of Water” is going to surprise many who think they know Brantley Gilbert. Trust me, the surprise is worth it.
I’ve said it many times, and I’ll say it again. I probably don’t fit into what the target demographic is for a Brantley fan. That doesn’t matter, however. This music is just like the man himself – real (tattoos or not!).

Allmusic (Rating: 4 STARS) …the 2017 sequel to Just as I Am -- makes it plain that Gilbert intends to separate himself from his party-hearty brethren....Pensive, sure -- Gilbert can make a weekend out partying seem like a brooding affair -- but he rarely seems dour on the bigger, bolder tunes, all of which sound like they're just on the verge of cutting loose. This reticence toward rocking accentuates how Gilbert really doesn't belong among modern country's bros. He's more of a romantic, specializing in lightly soulful slow-burners that wind up complementing his minor-key anthems.... At 16 tracks, The Devil Don't Sleep is a little bit long -- an impression exacerbated by its slow tempos -- but its individual components are strong, which means even if the album doesn't quite have momentum it's nevertheless always satisfying to sample.

Digital Journal (Rating: A) After the spitfire "Tried To Tell Ya," Gilbert shows his soft side on the gorgeous ballad "In My Head." Equally melodically-charming are the ballads "Way Back" and "Baby Be Crazy." "Outlaw In Me" is an acoustic masterpiece, while "Bullet In A Bonfire" is a powerhouse tune. The title track "The Devil Don't Sleep" would make a solid choice for a future radio single. It closes with the bittersweet ballad "We're Gonna Ride Again" and with the piano-driven "Three Feet Of Water."

Taste Of Country (Rating: Positive) …Brantley Gilbert is singing to two different girls on many of the best songs on The Devil Don’t Sleep. The country-rocker clearly has wife Amber on his mind during tender moments like “Outlaw In Me.” But his dirtiest memories are very un-matrimonial.
Once again “The Weekend” singer proves he’s one of country music’s most dynamic singer-songwriters. Across the 16 songs found on a massive standard version of the album he sings of love, love lost, abuse against women, parties, faith and the death of a friend. The thread that ties it all together is unbreakable as long as Gilbert remains committed to singing his diary....
Key Tracks: “Smokin’ Gun,” “Outlaw In Me,” “The Devil Don’t Sleep,” “Three Feet of Water”

Lauren Alaina with her second full length, ROAD LESS TRAVELLED (19/Interscope/Mercury Nashville/Universal Music Group Nashville), arrived at No.3 on Top Country Albums (No.31 Billboard 200) with 13,000 equivalent album units. Of that sum 9,717 were pure sales
WILDFLOWER (19/Interscope/Mercury), her first proper LP which followed two top 10 American Idol collections, after she placed second on the series’ 2011 season, debuted and peaked at No. 2 (69,000 sales) that October. Her debut album, was the best-selling female country debut since 2006 and youngest female artist to debut that high on the Billboard charts since LeAnn Rimes 15 years previous. With total sales of 221,000 Wildflower was ranked #10 for the Top-Selling Country Albums, Fourth-Quarter in  2011.
She released a 5 track self-titled EP on October 2, 2015 (Mercury Nashville Interscope 19) selling 1,600 copies to debut and peak at #28 Top Country Albums (chart dated Oct 3, 2015)
On Hot Country Songs, Road’s title-cut lead single, which Alaina wrote with Jesse Frasure and Meghan Trainor, journeyed to a new peak (17-12).
Promoting the album Lauren appeared on ABC-TV's "Good Morning AMERICA" (Jan 31). She talked with co-host Robin Roberts about her new album, "Road Less Traveled," and her struggles with bulimia. Watch the full interview here. Alaina also performed "Doin' Fine," from the new album.

Critical reception for Lauren Alaina’s Road Less Traveled:
12 Tracks/ Time: 41:59 Amazon UK (7 Feb) - UK iTunes - Amazon.com

Sounds Like Nashville (Rating: Positive) Alaina branches out of emotional tunes to deliver “My Kinda People,” “Queen of Hearts” and “Next Boyfriend,” which all keep it light, fun and can serve as summertime anthems. “Think Outside the Boy” and “Crashing the Boys Club” appeal directly to female empowerment and should be heard by girls everywhere. She serves as a role model, reminding fans that there is life way beyond boys and being a female doesn’t hold you back from doing anything.
In 2016 Alaina came out about her battle with bulimia. She expresses what she went through in “Pretty” as well as title track, and current single, “Road Less Traveled.” In both songs, as well as in real life, she comes out triumphant. The feel-good songs bring the album full circle showing how far she has come since her days as an American Idol.

Allmusic (Rating: 3.1/2 STARS) ..It announces a new Lauren Alaina, one who is happy to be a country diva in the vein of Carrie Underwood. Wildflower, her 2011 album, also carried a
debt to Underwood but it retained a bit of a twang, whereas Road Less Traveled is a big, bright country confection. Alaina co-wrote every one of the 12 songs and whether they're ballads or chipper pop tunes, they're usually sturdy numbers. She may drift into the saccharine when she slows the tempo -- the closing "Pretty" is a self-empowerment anthem that attempts to spin Christina Aguilera's "Beautiful" toward Middle America -- but the faster cuts are usually jubilant and help propel Road Less Traveled, turning it into a strong modern country-pop album.

Roughstock It’s been quite the ride for Lauren Alaina. Now 22 years old at the time of Road Less Traveled’s release, the album is far from a sophomore slump though I’m sure she’d have loved to have seen the album released more than nearly 6 years after her debut album hit stores. Instead of focusing on the kinds of youthful songs that made up her debut Wildflower, the dozen songs on Road Less Traveled showcase a lot of growth in content with songs that run the gamut from inspirational tunes like the hit title track to sassy songs like preview track “Next Boyfriend” to songs about alcoholism (“Same Day Different Bottle”) and divorce (“Doin’ Fine”) and growing up in a very visible way (“Three”).....There’s a bit of the wisdom shared from Taylor Swift’s earlier records and even some of RaeLynn’s songs and that’s a great thing. They’re all empowering while emotive, fun and funky productions like “Crashin’ The Boys Club” and “Queen Of Hearts” feel ready to make Lauren a household name while the Ballads will make her a superstar.

Country Album Sales Chart
No other albums charted on the second week of the new consumption-based methodology top 50 Top Country Album chart.
On the Country Album Sales chart Tift Merritt with STITCH OF THE WORLD (Yep Roc Records) made a debut at #19 (#10 Americana/Folk Album Sales) selling 1,974 copies.
The album was recorded in Los Angeles while Merritt was six months pregnant, after which she relocated to her hometown of Raleigh, North Carolina. “Dusty Old Man,” the album’s first single, premiered via Rolling Stone Country, who said, “Powered by guitars from Marc Ribot and pedal-steel wiz Eric Heywood over a bouncy shuffle rhythm from drummer Jay Bellerose and bassist Jennifer Condos, ‘Dusty Old Man’ has more of a bluesy, loose-limbed feel than anything Merritt has ever done.”

Critical reception for Tift Merritt’s - Stitch of the World:
10 Tracks/ Time: 37:45 Country/ Folk Amazon UK - UK iTunes - Amazon.com -

Allmusic (4 STARS) These sessions were produced by Sam Beam of Iron and Wine, who also contributes acoustic guitar and backing vocals, and the studio band brings together some stellar musicians, including guitarist Marc Ribot, pedal steel man Eric Heywood, and
drummer Jay Bellarose. But while Merritt has surrounded herself with some exceptional helpers, she carries Stitch of the World on her own shoulders, and does so with ease and aplomb. From the simple purity of numbers like "My Boat," "Eastern Light," and "Icarus" to the rowdy attack of "Proclamation Bones" and "Dusty Old Man," Merritt sounds confident and in control at every moment, and her graceful passion is a wonder to behold.
Slant Magazine (4 STARS) Merritt's chemistry with her band makes everything here feel lively, but don't let that obscure her ease of craft; when she shifts focus to the piano for “Heartache Is an Uphill Climb,” a hymn to holding on even in brokenness, she displays her casual mastery of the skyscraping ballad, building each chorus just a little bigger and a little weepier. (She also shows off that voice of hers, which has never sounded more like Dolly Parton's than it does on this song.)
The Independent (4 STARS) The material is split between classic country songcraft (“Love Soldiers On”), roustabout swamp-rock (“Proclamation Bones”) and some tracks that slip between the cracks in magical, engaging ways, such as the duet “Eastern Light” and especially the Raymond Carver-inspired “My Boat”. Its inclusive invitation – “You can do whatever you want, on my boat” – is richly borne out in the blend of sustained guitar tones, subtle mandolin and percussive textures.

Pop Matters (8/10) If Merritt’s tightening her writing, it might be connected to following some good inspiration. One of the album’s highlights, “My Boat” is a reworking of a Raymond Carver poem of the same title. Rather than setting his words to music, though, Merritt’s whittled it down to a precise statement of the significance of the vessel—best captured as “no one will be denied on my boat”—delivered over a rolling beat. It feints at the anthemic while creating an earworm while feeling effortless.

Barry Zito with NO SECRETS (EP; iTunes) made a debut at #39
Barry Zito baseball fans are about to become Barry Zito music fans! The retired major league pitcher is finally pursuing his lifelong dream of writing and recording music and has recorded his very first EP. Zito has been playing guitar since his early 20’s, while on the road in the minor leagues, and he began dabbling in songwriting for fun a few years later. Born with a natural athletic ability, he’s also always possessed a love and talent for music that he comes by quite naturally.  Zito grew up in a household surrounded by music. His father Joe worked as a conductor/arranger for Nat King Cole and eventually an artist manager, and his mother Roberta had been one of Cole’s backup singers in the Merry Young Souls. Barry recalls having a fascination with music pretty early on.

After retiring from his baseball career in 2015, Zito immediately turned his full attention to that second love and began crafting the songs that would fill his first album. You could almost say it was fate or kismet that brought the World Series winner full circle to a Triple A team in Music City right before he retired, and for Zito, it was definitely a long, winding journey full of interesting twists and turns that landed him there and ultimately inspired the songs on NO SECRETS.
