Billboard Top 200 / Country Album Chart News (Chart issue week of July 22, 2017)

The Billboard 200 chart measures multi-metric album consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA).

DJ Khaled Spends Second Week at No. 1 on Billboard 200, Calvin Harris Debuts at No. 2
DJ Khaled’s GRATEFUL notched a second week at No.1 on the Billboard Top 200 Albums Chart (BB200) -- it is the first album to spend more than one week at No.1 in two months. In the week ending July 6, Grateful earned 70,000 equivalent album units (down 53%), according to Nielsen Music. Traditional album sales comprised 15,633 (down 68%) of that sum.

The album continues to be supported largely by streams, as it tallied 42,000 SEA units -- down 48%, equaling 63.4 million on-demand audio streams for the album’s songs. Grateful also earned 12,000 TEA units for the week (down 36%).
Debuting at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 is Calvin Harris’ Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 1, earning the superstar DJ/producer his highest charting album yet. The star-filled dance-meets-R&B/hip-hop effort features guests ranging from Frank Ocean and Katy Perry to ScHoolboy Q and Nicki Minaj. Harris’ previous high on the Billboard 200 was logged when his last studio effort, Motion, debuted and peaked at No. 5 in 2014.
Rock band Stone Sour clocked a debut in the top 10, as Hydrograd bows at No 8 with a little less than 33,000 units (30,309 in traditional album sales). The album marks the fifth top 10-charting effort for the group, which first reached the region with 2006’s No. 4-peaking Come What(ever) May.
Yahoo Chart Watch: Billboard methodology move was as a reaction to dwindling album sales. Stone Sour’s album sold a mere 30K copies this week, a pitiful total for the week’s top-selling album in America. Billboard‘s judgment was that, taking everything into account, DJ Khaled’s album was more popular — more “consumed” to use its word — even though it didn’t sell as many copies (just 16K this week). This is only the second time since 1991 that the week’s best-selling album in the U.S. sold a mere 30K copies. The soundtrack to the Disney Channel’s 2015 original TV movie, Descendants, also sold just 30K copies.

Billboard Top Country Albums (Chart issue week of July 22, 2017)
Top Country Albums now ranks the most popular country albums of the week, as compiled by Nielsen Music, based on multi-metric consumption (blending traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA), and streaming equivalent albums (SEA)).
10 digital track sales from an album = 1 track equivalent album (TEA) “sale”
1,500 on demand song streams from an album to one streaming equivalent album (SEA) “sale”.
Nielsen Music compiles the sales and streaming data. Billboard continues to publish pure album sales charts (subscription to billboard biz ), exclusively comprising Nielsen’s sales data.

iTunes and GooglePlay sales gave a boost to a dose of albums that rose up the charts.

On Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart - which blends:
a) All-format airplay, as monitored by BDS
b) Sales, as tracked by Nielsen SoundScan and
c) Streaming, (tracked by Nielsen BDS from such services as Spotify, Muve, Slacker, Rhapsody, Rdio and Xbox Music, among others) according to BDS it results in:

Sam Hunt with “Body Like a Back Road” (MCA Nashville) extended its rule on Hot Country Songs to 22 weeks. Only Florida Georgia Line’s “Cruise” has led longer, for 24 weeks in 2012 and 2013.
“Road” likewise led Country Streaming Songs (17.8 million U.S. streams, up 6%) and Country Digital Song Sales (50,000 sold, up 1%) for a 22nd week each.
On Country Airplay, where it ruled for three weeks beginning on the May 6-dated chart, “Road” ranked in the top five (4-5; 37.2 million impressions, up less than 1%) for a record-setting 15th week. It passed four tracks that each logged 14 weeks in the top five: Rascal Flatts’ “My Wish” (2006-07), Tim McGraw’s “Live Like You Were Dying” (2004), Faith Hill’s “Breathe” (1999-2000) and Lonestar’s “Amazed” (1999).
Hunt’s “Body Like a Back Road” has been “doin’ 15 in a 30” for 22 straight weeks atop Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart, surpassing the 19-week record set by a solo artist (Leroy Van Dyke’s “Walk on By” in 1962).
“I wrote ‘Body Like a Back Road’ with my producer Zach Crowell, Josh Osborne and Shane McAnally,” said Sam to NCD. “I connect music to the emotions that come from relationships, so most of the songs that I write are inspired by those circumstances, emotions, feelings, all that kind of stuff. ‘Body Like a Back Road’ is a light-hearted song that was a lot of fun to write. It sort of swings, and hopefully it’s easy to listen to and will put a smile on some folks’ faces.”
