Billboard Top 200 / Country Album Chart News (Chart issue week of July 8, 2017)

The Billboard 200 chart measures multi-metric album consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA).

Lorde notched her first No.1 album on the Billboard Top 200 Album Chart, as her second full-length album, MELODRAMA, made a debut atop the list. The set, which was released on June 16 through Lava/Republic Records, earned 109,000 equivalent album units in the week ending June 22, according to Nielsen Music. Of that sum, 81,696 were in traditional album sales.
Melodrama followed Lorde’s debut full-length album, PURE HEROINE, which debuted and peaked at No.3 in 2013 with 129,000 copies sold in its first week.
Melodrama marked the third album by a woman in a row at No.1 on the chart (in as many weeks), following the chart-topping arrivals of Katy Perry’s WITNESS (July 1) and Halsey’s HOPELESS FOUNTAIN KINGDOM (June 24). The chart last had three women in a row back in December 2012, when Taylor Swift’s Red returned to No. 1 (Dec. 22), following No. 1 bows by Alicia Keys’ Girl on Fire (Dec. 15) and Rihanna’s Unapologetic (Dec. 8). Until the latest triple, the chart had not housed three new No. 1s by women since September 2009, when Whitney Houston’s I Look to You (Sept. 19) followed Colbie Caillat’s Breakthrough (Sept. 12) and Reba’s Keep On Loving You (Sept. 5). (All three titles were spending their first week at No. 1, and all debuted atop the tally.)

Jason Isbell claimed his highest charting album, second top 10 effort and best sales week, as THE NASHVILLE SOUND (with The 400 Unit) made a debut at No.4 with 54,000 units. Of that sum, 51,325 were in traditional album sales. That surpasses Isbell’s previous sales high of 45,800, logged by SOMETHING MORE THAN FREE in its debut frame back in 2015. Something More Than Free was also his high-water mark on the chart until this week, as it debuted and peaked at No.6.
Alternative/folk band Fleet Foxes claimed its second top 10 effort, as Crack-Up bowed at No. 9 with 34,000 units (31,878 in traditional album sales). It’s the first release for the act in nearly six years, since Helplessness Blues, which debuted and peaked at No. 4 in May of 2011.

Billboard Top Country Albums (Chart issue week of July 8, 2017)
Top Country Albums now ranks the most popular country albums of the week, as compiled by Nielsen Music, based on multi-metric consumption (blending traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA), and streaming equivalent albums (SEA)).
10 digital track sales from an album = 1 track equivalent album (TEA) “sale”
1,500 on demand song streams from an album to one streaming equivalent album (SEA) “sale”.
Nielsen Music compiles the sales and streaming data. Billboard continues to publish pure album sales charts (subscription to billboard biz ), exclusively comprising Nielsen’s sales data.

JASON ISBELL & THE 54,000 UNITS
On Top Country Albums, Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit with new LP, THE NASHVILLE SOUND (Southeastern/Thirty Tigers), arrived at No.1, earning 54,000 equivalent album units (51,325 in pure sales, a career best) in the week ending June 22.

Isbell earned his second No.1 on Top Country Albums. His first entry, Something More Than Free, debuted at the summit on Aug. 8, 2015, with 45,800 copies sold.

"For me to be a happy person, I have to feel I’m contributing to the world outside myself." - Jason Isbell talks The Nashville Sound and his view on songwriting, influences behind songs like "Hope the High Road" and "Cumberland Gap" and more. Read more Paste Magazine

Critical reception for Jason Isbell’s The Nashville Sound:
10 Tracks/ Time: 40:17 Amazon UK - UK iTunes - Amazon.com

American Songwriter  (Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars) The title of the latest album by Jason Isbell and his Alabama-based wrecking crew The 400 Unit is both promise and provocation. It’s partly a shot across the bow of Music City’s current hitmakers, but it’s also Isbell’s solemn vow that he’s going to do his damnedest to live up to the city’s legendary songwriters and performers, the ones who put authenticity and integrity before flash and artifice......Domesticity features on two of the finest tracks on an album without a weak spot. “”If We Were Vampires,” with wife Amanda Shires on tender harmony vocal, muses on how love may be forever but life is fleeting, while “Anxiety” details how getting everything we want only makes us worry we’ll lose it. On the closing track, Isbell sings the praises of family, humility and music, all while wishing his audience finds “Something To Love.” Giving them The Nashville Sound fulfills that wish and then some.

Independent (Rating: 80/100) ..There’s nothing particularly Nashville about Jason Isbell’s new album--no cowboy hats or keening steel guitars--but it does possess, in spades, the kind of blue-collar concerns that have traditionally furnished country music’s backbone.

The Skinny (Rating: 3 STARS) ...The Nashville Sound isn't a bad record by any estimation, but there are flat moments. White Man's World begins promisingly, with a crunching guitar riff and some subtle keys, but lyrically it feels a little rushed. Clearly Isbell is trying to address some big issues here, all the more relevant in Trump's America, but it's all a bit surface level. Another topical issue, mental health, is covered on Anxiety. This is better executed but still treads the same ground throughout.

Chris Stapleton with From A Room: Volume 1 (Mercury/Universal Music Group Nashville) held at #2 (13-17 Billboard 200) selling 20,291 copies (7-week total 404,816) while Stapleton’s TRAVELLER (MERCURY/ UMGN) rose 8-4 (#45-39 BB200) selling 8,447 copies (up 12%; 112-week total 1,988,300).

In their second chart week last weeks’ No.1 Lady Antebellum with HEART BREAK (Capitol Nashville/Universal Music Group Nashville), fell 1-3 (4-24 Billboard 200) with 16,191 in pure sales, (down 65%; 2-week total 63,141).

Zac Brown Band with WELCOME HOME (Southern Ground/Elektra/Atlantic Group) rose 6-5 (34-41 BB200) selling 10,544 copies (down 18%; 6-week total 212,360).

Luke Combs with THIS ONE’S FOR YOU (River House/Columbia Nashville/Sony Music Nashville) fell 5-6 (#33-42 BB200) selling 6,683 copies (down 21%; 3-week total 50,177).
Keith Urban with RIPCORD (Hit Red/Capitol Nashville) fell 4-7 (#30-44 BB200) selling 6,343 copies (down 20%; 59-week total 608,900).
In its second frame Various Artists with Now That's What I Call Country Volume 10 (Universal Music Group) fell #3-8 (#27-48 Billboard 200) selling 12,268 copies (down 27%; 2-week total 29,014).

Florida Georgia Line with DIG YOUR ROOTS (BMLG) held at #9 (#50-52 BB200) selling 2,341 copies (down 8; 43-week total 401,700).
Brett Young with self-titled debut (BMLG) fell held at #10 (#55-58 BB200) selling 3,804 copies (down 9%; 19-week total 93,600).

Outside the Top 10
In his second frame Glen Campbell with ADIÓS (ME Direct) fell 7-16 (#40-109 BB200) selling 6,858 (down 50%; 2-week total 10,630).

Steve Earle & The Dukes with SO YOU WANT TO BE AN OUTLAW (Warner Brothers) made a debut at #15 (#102 BB200) selling 7,134 copies. It was the 35th best seller and 7th ranked Country album on sales.
It features collaborations with Willie Nelson, Johnny Bush, and Miranda Lambert and is an homage to outlaw music and the late Waylon Jennings.
Critical reception for Steve Earle & The Dukes’ So You Want To Be An Outlaw:
16 Tracks/ Time: 49:26 Amazon UK - UK iTunes - Amazon.com.

American Songwriter (Rating: 4/5 stars) The title of Steve Earle’s latest album seems to suggest that younger artists trying to cultivate the “outlaw” brand might not have what it takes. A closer listen reveals that So You Wanna Be An Outlaw has a kind of double
meaning: “Everybody reckons that they want to be free/ Ain’t nobody wants to be alone,” Earle sings on the title track, and he then gets Willie Nelson to croon with him on the song to second the notion that outlaw life isn’t always what it’s mythologized to be......Albums like this one continue to burnish a musical legacy that is every bit as imposing as the ones to which Earle pays homage in these songs.

The Guardian (Rating: 4 STARS).. Here, Earle pays homage to the outlaws with a dozen fine originals, from noisy guitar rock-outs like the title track (with a guest spot from Nelson) and the bleak Fixin’ to Die, to gentle loser ballads such as You Broke My Heart and This Is How it Ends (a duet with Miranda Lambert), ending with Goodbye Michelangelo, a tender farewell to the late Guy Clark.

Allmusic (Rating: 4 STARS) ...Perhaps Earle suddenly became eager to take a look into the past, or he was inspired by the current success of literate country outsiders like Sturgill Simpson and Jason Isbell. But for whatever reason, 2017's So You Wannabe an Outlaw is the most explicitly country record Earle has made since his bluegrass set The Mountain in 1999....Earle doesn't always sound as keenly inspired as he did when he was writing stuff like this in the '80s and '90s, but his craft is, if anything, better, and similarly his voice is showing its age but his phrasing is as smart and dramatically effective as it has ever been. So You Wannabe an Outlaw is something plenty of Steve Earle fans have been wanting for years, a no-excuses country album that updates his breakthrough work, and it's an effort that should please his core audience while also sounding like an album Earle made entirely on his own terms.

Eli Young Band with FINGERPRINTS (The Valory Music Co./ Big Machine Label Group, LLC) made a bow at No.17 (#116 BB200) selling 5,556 copies.
Their last album 10,000 TOWNS released March 4, 2014 opened at No.1 on the Top Country Album’s selling 35,947 copies; (charted dated March 22, 2014)
Published on Jun 9, 2017 Eli Young Band video “Never Land”.

Critical reception for Eli Young Band’s Fingerprints:
11 Tracks/ Time: 35:44 Amazon UK - UK iTunes - Amazon.com

Allmusic (Rating: 3 STARS) This means that the record is proud of its swagger, something that's evident from the strutting title track and the propulsive "Once," but the group
strengthens its slower numbers by emphasizing a delicate touch instead of sticky sentiment. "Skin & Bones" and "God Love the Rain" are sweet, gentle songs that provide a nice contrast to the album's livelier moments, and this highlights the true strength of Fingerprints. By stripping away some of the gloss, it's easier to hear how the Eli Young Band have both melodic muscle and musical variety.

Sounds Like Nashville (Rating: Positive)...A standout release......Co-produced by Eli Young Band with Ross Copperman and Jeremy Stover, Fingerprints will surely satisfy longtime fans hoping for a return to the sound that made them first fall in love with the country band...The title track, “Fingerprints,” follows suit and proves to be a surefire hit in the live setting with gritty guitar parts, Eli’s soaring vocals and a sing along chorus that begs the listener to hit the repeat button.
Well known for their poignant ballads, there is no shortage of songs that hit the heart on Fingerprints.

Kane Brown with self-titled KANE BROWN (Zone 4/RCA Nashville) fell 16-18 (#109-124 BB200) selling 2,077 copies (down 4%; 29-week total 161,600).
Miranda Lambert with THE WEIGHT OF THESE WINGS (Vanner/ RCA Nashville/Sony Music Nashville) fell 17-21 (113- BB200) selling 2,289 copies (down 12%; 31-week total 364,200).

FALLING SHORT of Top 50:
On the Country Album Sales list (pure sales; old methodology)

Jon Wolfe with ANY NIGHT IN TEXAS (Fool Hearted Productions; Amazon UK) made a debut at No.15 on Country Album Sales selling 2,439 copies. It features the Texas #1 hit "Boots On A Dance Floor" and the new single "Baby This And Baby That"

The Dustbowl Revival with their 11 track album THE DUSTBOWL REVIVAL (Signature Sounds Recordings; Amazon UK) made a debut at No.43 selling 900 copies.
Premiere Video for "Honey I Love You". Dustbowl Revival was named for the influential Guthrie collection Dust Bowl Ballads; and the eight-piece built its early sound on strings-driven American rural roots music. Dustbowl’s repertoire evolved into a genre-hopping festivity, equal parts back porch, juke joint, swing club, and blues roots. Now, with Producer Grammy Award-winning Ted Hutt (Old Crow Medicine Show, Gaslight Anthem, Dropkick Murphys), Dustbowl Revival brings it on, in the good company of neo-Soul contemporaries such as Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats and St. Paul & The Broken Bones.

Adam Doleac with 6 track self-tiled EP ADAM DOLEAC (EP; 287 Records; Amazon UK) made a debut at No.44 selling 900 copies. Adam has penned upwards of 200 songs, has written hits for country superstars Kane Brown and Darius Rucker and many others have put holds on some of his compositions, including Kenny Chesney, Rascal Flatts, Justin Moore and David Nail. Adam released his self-titled, debut EP on June 16th, 2017. The EP was recorded in Nashville, produced by Lindsay Rimes and features 6 tracks co-written by Adam, including his single “Whiskey’s Fine."

Gretchen Wilson with her 12 track READY TO GET ROWDY (Redneck Records; Amazon UK) made a debut at #50 selling 800 copies.
After a two-year hiatus, the "Redneck Woman" returns with another album. The title track is co-written with Shane Minor and Trent Tomlinson.

Sweet Tea Trio with 6 track self-tiled SWEET TEA TRIO (EP; iTunes) sold 500 copies.
They were voted by Alabama Music Awards 2016’s “Best Country Female Artist.”  Hailing from three different parts of Alabama, Kate Falcon, Victoria Camp and Savannah Coker have joined forces to give country music fans their first taste of an all female trio since groups like the Dixie Chicks and the Pistol Annies. Their trademark is their harmonies and collectively they sing with a beautiful blend of southern charm and a little bit of country twang!

Sweet Tea Trio: Your New Western-Chic Style Inspiration (Whiskey Riff.com) Blurb Sweet Tea Trio are about to give you closet envy. As women in country music you have to establish a look for yourselves. You can’t just show up onstage in jeans in a tee like the boys can. Well I guess you could, but where is the fun in that? Sweet Tea Trio is absolutely killing it onstage with their live set AND their to die for outfits from their jewelry down to their boots. They owe a lot of their looks to The Gypsy Spur, a boutique in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. - Facebook

Sam Hunt with “Body Like a Back Road” (MCA Nashville) steamrolled to a landmark 20th week at No.1. The song broke a tie with Leroy Van Dyke’s “Walk On By” (1961-62) for the longest command by a solo artist on the nearly 59-year-old Hot Country Songs chart. It’s now solely the second-longest reign overall, trailing only Florida Georgia Line’s “Cruise” (24 weeks at No.1 in 2012 and 2013).
“Body” also ruled Country Streaming Songs (16.2 million U.S. streams) and Country Digital Song Sales (47,000 sold) for a 20th week each, while logging a 13th week in the Country Airplay top five (No.4; 36.8 million in audience) after leading the list for three weeks.

Texas-based trio Midland earned its first Hot Country Songs top 10, as its debut single, “Drinkin’ Problem” (Big Machine), bumped 11-10. The traditional-styled track increased 8% to 25.4 million in audience as it bulleted at No.14 on Country Airplay. On Country Digital Song Sales, it pushed to a new high (8-6) despite a less than 1% dip to 14,000 sold. It nudged 19-18 on Country Streaming Songs, although it’s down 3% to 3.8 million U.S. streams.

Russell Dickerson’s launched single, “Yours” (Triple Tigers), flew 47-21 on Hot Country Songs. After Dickerson performed the song on ABC’s The Bachelorette on June 19, making his national TV debut, it sold 19,000 downloads in the week ending June 22 (up from 2,000 the week before) and re-entered Country Digital Song Sales at No.3. Concurrently, the love song, which Dickerson wrote for his wife, Kailey, surged 58% to 2 million U.S. streams. On Country Airplay, “Yours” grew by 19% to 2.9 million in audience, rising to a new peak (50-46).

Billboard Country Airplay (Chart issue week of July 8, 2017)

Florida Georgia Line, the duo of Brian Kelley and Tyler Hubbard, earned its 11th No.1 on Billboard’s Country Airplay chart (dated July 8) as “God, Your Mama, and Me” (Big Machine Label Group/BMLG Records), featuring Backstreet Boys, ascended 2-1.

In its 24th week on the chart, the song — written by Hillary Lindsey, Josh Kear and Gordie Sampson — increases 8% to 43.7 million audience impressions in the tracking week ending June 25, according to Nielsen Music. “Waking up to a No.1 song is the most amazing feeling, and to share this moment with Backstreet Boys is surreal,” Hubbard told Billboard.

We can’t thank them enough for being a part of this song.”
The third single from FGL’s DIG YOUR ROOTS album is also the twosome’s third straight Country Airplay leader from the set. It follows “May We All,” featuring Tim McGraw, which led the chart for two weeks starting on Dec. 10, 2016, and “H.O.L.Y.,” which topped the Aug. 6-dated tally. FGL first struck No.1 on Country Airplay with its debut hit, “Cruise,” which led for three weeks beginning Dec. 15, 2012.
Backstreet Boys earn their first Country Airplay No.1, a feat that fellow late-’90s/early-2000s hit-making boy band ’N SYNC never attained. The latter act, as featured on Alabama’s “God Must Have Spent a Little More Time on You,” hit No. 3 in 1999. The song updated Justin Timberlake’s former group’s No. 8 Billboard Hot 100 pop hit earlier that year.

Keith Urban with “The Fighter,” featuring Carrie Underwood (Hit Red/Capitol Nashville), entered the Country Airplay top 10 (11-10), increasing 3% to 30 million impressions.
The pop - flavored collaboration marked Urban’s 38th total and consecutive Country Airplay top 10 (counting only promoted and non-seasonal singles).
It’s the chart’s longest active streak of such top 10s, a run that started with the No. 4-peaking “Your Everything” in 2000. As Urban boasted the longest active streak of Country Airplay top 10s, Underwood claimed the second-longest: 26, which began with her 2006 No.1 format debut, “Jesus, Take the Wheel.”
The Fighter” is the fifth top 10 from Urban’s eighth studio album, RIPCORD, following the No.2 hit “John Cougar, John Deere, John 3:16 ” and the No.1s “Break on Me” (March 12, 2016; one week on top), “Wasted Time” (July 9, 2016; two) and “Blue Ain’t Your Color” (Jan. 14; two).

Little Big Town Is Most-Added With “When Someone Stops Loving You
Kudos to Bobby Young and the Capitol crew for notching 29 adds on Little Big Town’sWhen Someone Stops Loving You”. The song topped the "Most Added" board this chart week. With a tip of the hat to Stone Door Media Lab’s Jeff Green, LBT snapped a streak of 10 consecutive weeks with a different male solo artist as No.1 Most Added, which had never happened before in Country Aircheck history. The run also set a record for consecutive weeks with a male artist as most-added, though the previous span in 2006 included three artists who held the top spot for two weeks. In this year’s 25 weeks to date, a female solo artist has been No.1 most added just once: Miranda Lambert’s “Tin Man.”
