Billboard Top 200 / Country Album Chart News (Chart issue week of September 23, 2017)

The Billboard 200 chart measures multi-metric album consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA).

LCD Soundsystem achieved its first No.1 album on the Billboard Top 200 Album Chart (BB200), as AMERICAN DREAM arrives atop the list. The set earned 85,000 equivalent album units in the week ending Sept. 7, according to Nielsen Music. Of that sum, 80,786 were in traditional album sales. The album was released on Sept. 1 and is the act’s first new studio effort in more than seven years, and first for Columbia Records.
LCD Soundsystem, led by James Murphy, last released a studio set in 2010, when THIS IS HAPPENING debuted and peaked at No.10 on the list (its then-highest ranking effort). American Dream is the act’s third charting title -- LCD’s second studio effort, Sound of Silver, reached No. 46 in 2007.

Billboard Top Country Albums (Chart issue week of September 23, 2017)
Top Country Albums now ranks the most popular country albums of the week, as compiled by Nielsen Music, based on multi-metric consumption (blending traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA), and streaming equivalent albums (SEA)).
10 digital track sales from an album = 1 track equivalent album (TEA) “sale”
1,500 on demand song streams from an album to one streaming equivalent album (SEA) “sale”.
Nielsen Music compiles the sales and streaming data. Billboard continues to publish pure album sales charts (subscription to billboard biz ), exclusively comprising Nielsen’s sales data.

Billboard Country Airplay (Chart issue week of September 23, 2017)

Dustin Lynch with “Small Town Boy” (Broken Bow) led the Country Airplay chart for a second week, increasing 5% to 48.8 million audience impressions in the week ending Sept. 10.

Luke Combs landed his second top 10 as “When It Rains It Pours” (River House/Columbia Nashville) jumped 15-10 (23.8 million, up 20%). His breakthrough hit, “Hurricane,” led for two weeks beginning May 27.

Carly Pearce earned her first top 10 on Billboard’s Country Airplay chart as her debut hit, “Every Little Thing” (Big Machine), climbed 12-9 (24.2 million, up 10%, according to Nielsen Music).

How many solo women have reached the region in 2017?
In the first 38 chart weeks of 2017, one solo woman has topped Country Airplay, with three others (including Pearce), hitting the top 10.
Lauren Alaina led the April 22 list when “Road Less Traveled” became her first No.1.
Kelsea Ballerini with “Yeah Boy” peaked at No.3 (May 13)
Carrie Underwood with “Dirty Laundry” hit No. 2 (Jan. 21).
Compared to a year ago? In the first 38 weeks of 2016, seven songs by solo women reached the top 10, including four No.1s by two artists: Ballerini’s “Dibs” and “Peter Pan,” and Underwood’s “Heartbeat” and “Church Bells.”
The other three top 10s: “Burning House” by Cam (No. 2), “I Got the Boy” by Jana Kramer (No. 6) and “My Church” by Maren Morris (No.9).
Five years ago, in the first 38 frames of 2012, six songs by solo women achieved Country Airplay top 10 success, three of which hit No. 1. And a decade ago, six songs by solo females also reached that region, including Taylor Swift’s first two top 10s: “Tim McGraw” (No. 6) and “Teardrops on My Guitar” (No. 2).
When comparing those years, not much variance is evident. KKBQHouston PD Johnny Chiang says that a song’s potential, not an artist’s gender, is what should determine initial airplay. “Male, female, group — it just doesn’t matter.
It’s about how good the song is. If any programmers are actually favoring male acts over females, it’s just dumb.”
WWQM Madison, Wis., PD Fletcher Keyes notes, “Morris’ ‘My Church’ did not reach No.1 on the chart, but we just tested 400 songs and ‘Church’ ranked 15th. That means she’s reaching critical mass.”
As for Pearce, Chiang feels strongly about her chances for further success. “We’ve been on ‘Every Little Thing’ since day one, and it’s stronger than ever,” he says. “I’m a believer. The song is a hit.”
SPEAKING OF SWIFT With Taylor Swift back with arguably her most pop single yet, “Look What You Made Me Do” (Big Machine/Republic), at No.1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for a second week, Johnny Chiang adds that her segue from country has
When Taylor Swift left the format, it was a huge blow for the genre,” said KKBQHouston PD Johnny Chiang. “She has a giant, loyal legion of fans; a lot of them are now listening to pop stations. With Swift’s new song being the event that it is, I put some of her country tracks back in rotation. We’re playing ‘Tim McGraw,’ ‘Red,’ ‘Love Story’ and a few others again.”

Blake Shelton with "I’ll Name the Dogs" made his 45th Country Airplay appearance (he has notched 24 No.1s), leans traditional, fueled by fiddles and guitars. The first single from his forthcoming album debuted at No. 23 with 10 million first-week audience impressions.

Country Airplay
*** No.1 (2 weeks) *** "Small Town Boy” Dustin Lynch 48.803 million audience (+2.393 million) / 8,316 radio plays (+323)
** Hot Shot Debut/ Most Increased Audience/ Most Added ** No.23 “I'll Name The Dogs” Blake Shelton 10.012 million audience gain thanks to 73 fresh radio commitments (ADDS),
Debut No.59 “Wake Me Up” Billy Currington
Debut No.60 “Never Gets Old” Joe Nichols

Billboard Country Digital Singles Chart
(Chart issue week of September 23, 2017)

Sam Hunt with Body Like a Back Road” (MCA Nashville) held at No.1 (#17-16 Digital Songs) leading the chart for a record-lengthening 31st week.
It was 15 places behind Taylor Swift's ...Ready For It? with 135,000 downloads sold. Swift scored her 13th Digital Song Sales No.1, moving to within one of Rihanna, who leads with 14 toppers on the tally.
Swift's "Look What You Made Me Do" spent a second week at No.1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart (dated Sept. 23). Swift also debuted at No. 4 on the Hot 100 with "…Ready for It?," with both songs previewing her new album Reputation, due Nov. 10. "Look" dipped to No. 2 after a week atop the Digital Song Sales chart (114,000 downloads sold, down 68%, in the week ending Sept. 7) and lifted 14-13 on Radio Songs (72 million all-format audience impressions, up 15%).

Kane Brown feat. Lauren Alaina with “What If’s” climbed 3-2 (#21-18 Digital Songs).
Luke Combs with “When It Rains It Pours” (River House | Columbia Nashville) rose 4-3 (#30-25 Digital Songs).
Dustin Lynch with “Small Town Boy” climbed 5-4 (#33-31 Digital Songs).
Thomas Rhett with “Life Changes” made a debut at #5 (#33 Digital Songs; 15,000 sales) as his tracks “Unforgettable” (Valory) held at #6 (#40-36 Digital Songs) as his duet win Maren Morris with “Craving You” fell 12-15.
LANco with “Greatest Love Story” (Arista Nashville) rose 8-7 (#38-49 Digital Songs).
Jon Pardi with “Heartache On The Dancefloor” pushed 10-8 (#49 Re-entry Digital Songs).
Midland with “Drinkin’ Problem” fell 7-9 (#41-50 Digital Songs).
Brett Young with “In Case You Didn’t Know” slipped 9-10.
Outside the Top 10
Carly Pearce with Every Little Thing” (Big Machine) held at #11
Luke Bryan with “Light It Up” (Capitol Nashville) slumped 2-13 in his third week.
After Miranda Lambert landed five nominations — the most of any act — for the 51st Annual CMA Awards (to be held Nov. 8), including single and song of the year for “Tin Man,” the ballad re-entered Country Digital Song Sales at No. 21, up 14% to 6,000 sold. On Country Airplay, it bulleted at its No.31 high (6.6 million, up 10%).
