The British Country Music Association (BCMA Awards; Website: bcmawards.co.uk) weekend were held on Saturday 22nd October and Sunday 23rd October 2017.

The awards weekend opened with a Best of British Showcase held at in Wolverhampton at The Robin 2 (20-28 Mount Pleasant, WV14 7LJ Bilston; Non-Members - £20 | Members – FREE). Acts performing included Raintown (Watch them perform >> "Hope In Troubled Times"), Gary Quinn, Darcy, Megan & The Common Threads, singer-songwriter Simon James and US act Sarah Darling.

The awards were held at the Wulfrun Hall, Wolverhampton (North St, WV1 1RQ; Members - £22.50; Non-Members - £25.00
VIP - £50.00 (Included pre-show reception with "meet and greet" and priority seating)
The 2017 British Country Music Awards (BCMAwards) were once again hosted by BBC Radio 2 Country and Chris Country Radio (“The Front Porch”) presenter Baylen Leonard.

Going into the 2017 British Country Music Association Awards the pack was led by The ShiresWard Thomas (both record breaking acts on the Official UK Top 100 Album Chart) and Darcy Crawford who each received 4 nominations.
Laura Oakes (Female Vocalist 2015-2016), Gary Quinn (Male Vocalist of the Year 2016), Jess and the Bandits (Entertainer of the Year and Group of the Year 2016) snagged 3 nominations.

Performers at the awards show included American Young (USA), Sarah Darling (USA), Jenn Bostic (USA), Southern Halo (USA), Outlander, Laura Oakes (BCMA Female Vocalist of the Year 2015-2016), Kevin McGuire, Clara Bond Band, Journey Home, Jade Helliwell and Penny Jane Black.

Despite the record breaking Official UK Album Chart success by The Shires and Ward Thomas with GOLD and Silver certified

Albums, BBC Radio 2 playlisted singles, and playing to 1000s of fans at festivals and large theatres Thorne Hill proved to be the most popular with the BCMA Award voters as he scooped the prestigious Entertainer of The Year award (won last year by out Jess and the Bandits).

Thorne also won the biggie landing the UK Country Awards UK Country Artist Of The Year (presented by UKCountryRadio.com | see BLOG) on Saturday 2nd September 2017. It was Hill’s first win in the category and his second nomination. Thorne was the 2016 UK Male Country Singer Of The Year winner.

Thorne Hill self released his 10 track album NO MORE HOLDING BACK (2015 Thorne Hill Amazon UK - UK iTunes back in late February 2016 launched at Studio2 Parr St, Liverpool (33-45 Parr St Liverpool L1 4JN / JRoom3). A 1st Year Anniversary Concert (Feb 11, 2017) celebrating the first year of 'No More Holding Back' was held at the same venue. His debut album was part funded using the crowd funded Pledge Music platform (See Project)

Chart Success
It arrived at #1213 on UK iTunes Album Chart (all genres) and #30 UK iTunes Country albums. It then climbed to #834 UK iTunes (#18 UK iTunes Country) then #612 (#9 UK iTunes Country). 
As of Sunday Feb 28, 2016, it reached its highest peak at #502 (#6 UK iTunes Country). As of March 3, 2016, it was nowhere to seen on the UK iTunes Country Top 200 album placings and can’t recall a re-appearance. 

It did receive critical acclaim on UK country radio stations and shows with a 5 STAR review from Chris Smith in Country Music People magazine.
"The UK Country Music scene has been raising the bar over the last couple of years, now that bar has been raised even higher with Thorne Hill's Debut Album. Since then Thorne recorded a track “The Life I Once Knew” as part of the Charlotte Elizabeth Board (CEI Events) project SURVIVE released on 3 Feb 2017.
On June 23, 2017, Hill dropped a new single “What If It's Just Tonight” (writers Thorne Hill, Tom Wright;  Single; 2017 Thorne Hill | Amazon UK - UK iTunes)
The blurb read: “Following the rip-roaring success of No More Holding Back - Thorne is BACK with a newly defined sound and is so excited about the next steps on this phenomenal journey”.
The single drew widespread support on UK country radio stations and specialized shows and was playlisted by Chris Country Radio.
It debuted at #11 on the iTunes UK Country Singles (#734 overall UK Singles chart), then fell to #16 (#988 all genres) by Sun 25 June it had slumped to #138 fell off the top 200 and very briefly re-entered at #179.
Thorne was by all accounts very popular as part of the 2017 line-ups at Little Mountain Country Music Festival and most notably at the Buckle & Boots Festival (hosting the cream of UK Country talent alongside chart topping US Country stars). - "Thorne Hill has so much energy, the crowd love him!"
Thorne has opened for Joni Harms, Dylan Jakobsen and Jace Everett (Mon 9th Oct 2017; Manchester The Star And Garter).
On Sunday 5th November 2017 he will open for Legend Colin Raye at the Norbreck Castle Olympiad Ballroom (Queens Promenade, Blackpool, FY2 9AA; Tickets £25 Event)

This marks Jade’s first BCMA Awards win.
Singer/songwriter Jade Helliwell won the prestigious Yamaha Hoedown competition in February this year securing her a slot at the UK’s biggest Country Music festival, Country 2 Country (C2C 2017) at the O2 in London.
An impromptu “Hallelujah” duet with busker Dawid Osial went VIRAL with over 16 million views!


This resulted in Helliwell’s FORGET THE NIGHT (EP) climbing to #1 on the UK Country Album iTunes Chart and #8 on the overall UK iTunes chart
Jade’s Facebook Page Likes sky-rocketed by 856,000%!! She now has over 65,000 Facebook Followers. She wants to be the UK's Taylor Swift!' She has signed up with RAW Management in London.
She was also nominated for the UKCountryRadio.com’s UK Country Music Awards for UK Country Artist Of The Year in September.
She is named as the headline act to perform and hit the button in her hometown at the Batley Lights Switch On December 2nd (Event).
On Instagram Jade shared: “I had so much fun performing at the BCMAS with Luke Thomas. I've had the craziest year of my life this year and last night topped it off when I won the award for "Female Vocalist of The Year" I'm still completely shocked and so thankful to all the amazing people I've met his year who voted for me - thanks so much. I appreciate your support more than you'll ever know. Thanks to the BCMA for the nomination and to my friends and family who came to support me last night.

HOMETOWN WIN: The lovely Wolverhampton based singer-songwriter who was new to the category in 2017 picked up her first BCMA award. Along with Katy Hurt, Toria Lynn, The Rising and Outlander (eventual winners) she was previously nominated for Horizon Act of the Year in 2015.

Darcy (Darcy Crawford) originally hails from Brisbane, Australia and was based at Compstall, Manchester. A big favourite with BCMA Awards panellists Wayne Hadlow (FSA
Festival) and Jim Duncan (“One of the great new acts”). 

Speaking about Darcy’s HOOKED EP Wayne said: “My good friend Darcy, he performs wonderfully, the album is fantastic, an amazing album. Nothing out of Nashville is better than it, the writing and material is just great, the songs are great. Anyone that wants a good country album go out and buy it” 

Released on 23 June 2017 Amazon UKthe 6-track HOOKED, recorded in Nashville, made a debut at #17 on the UK Country iTunes Chart (#526 overall UK Albums chart), then fell to #28 (#1080 overall and quickly fell off the Top 200.

Originally from Brisbane, Australia, Darcy is a Country Rock Recording artist for 4Quarters Records bringing the country scene over to the UK in style.

Hampshire Contemporary country duo Ward Thomas (Catherine and Lizzy Ward Thomas, non-identical 23-year olds) made history as the very first UK country act to have a No.1 album on the Official UK Top 100 Albums Chart (chart Week Ending 15 Sept 2016) when CARTWHEELS opened atop the chart on sales of 12,127 copies (including 227 from streams). Cartwheels far surpasses their debut album, FROM WHERE WE STAND, which debuted and peaked at No.41 on sales of 2,473 copies a little over two years previous, and went on to sell around 27,00 copies. As well as touring the UK in support of the album they also dropped their first EP, A Shorter Story, which featured the duo covering five of their favourite songs. They also supported country superstar Miranda Lambert on the UK leg of her Highway Vagabond Tour.

Country octet Zac Brown enjoyed their highest chart placing yet in the UK on the Official UK Top 100 Albums Chart (dated chart week Ending 25 May 2017) when Welcome Home, their sixth studio set, debuted at No.25 (3,100 sales) eclipsing the 2015 No.36 debut/peak (2,273 sales) of immediate predecessor Jekyll + Hyde, their first UK chart entry. The following week it fell off the top 100. Additionally, it topped the Official UK Country Album Top 20 (chart Week Ending 1 June 2017) overhauling Chris Stapletons FROM A ROOM Vol 1 and led for 2 weeks.

Some of the British artists to record with Westwood Records were:
  • In 1974, the late Keith Manifold he became the first UK country artist to benefit from appearances on television’s Opportunity Knocks, eventually finishing second to the series’ overall winner Lena Zavaroni. He made his first recordings for the Westwood label in 1974. In 1975, he performed the winning song, ‘Who’s Gonna Bring Me Laughter.
  • Campbell's Country (Campbell Baxter and Tim Richards) are one of the UK's top country music duo's
  • Like so many people in Britain, Jeannie Denver was quite oblivious to country music, and though she might feature a country song in her act, it was just another song to be sung. It was not until 1973 that she turned seriously to country music, and since then she has never looked back.
  • Jeff Cliffson was born in a little village called Chirk, Wrexham, in North Wales. He joined a skiffle group, but it was while serving with the army that he first heard the music of Hank Williams, Hank Snow, Webb Pierce and Marty Robbins etc., the singers who had influence on my musical style. Together with wife his Joan they ran the Cliffson`s Country Music Club in Wrexham for twenty three years, until November 2005

AWARDS CRITERIA
The nominations and voting criteria continued not to mirror the eligibility period and category criteria adopted by the CMA in America and CCMA in Canada. Members of British Country Music Association DO NOT get to have the opportunity to cast a vote in order to determine who the nominees are. 
BCMA Members only had the chance to VOTE on the names presented to them.
There was no official eligibility period set to submit a body of work or achievement with no ballot rounds to determine the nominations.

VOTING for the 2017 BCMA Award nominees began on September 1st 2017. You had to be a member of the British Country Music Association in order to vote.

As far as we can tell the BCMA Award panel most likely includes:

Jeanne Jordan (Treasurer/ Secretary and a Director of British Country Music Awards), Wayne Hadlow (FSA Festival)

Jim Duncan 101.8 WCR FM Country Music show presenter, BCMA Awards panellist and Curator of the British Country Music Hall of Fame created the magic of the BCMA Awards 2017 in a 2-hour highlights show, first broadcast on Thursday 26th October 2017 on The Station with MORE for Wolverhampton. Senior Broadcast Engineer at BBC WM 95.6FM Andy Walters was the genius who took every piece of channel from The Wulfrun Hall BCMA Awards show creating a multi-track recording made from the front of house mixer and mixed down later.
