Billboard Top 200 / Country Album Chart News (Chart issue week of October 14, 2017)

The Billboard 200 chart measures multi-metric album consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA).

The Killers Earn First No. 1 Album on Billboard 200 Chart With 'Wonderful Wonderful'
More than 13 years after The Killers debuted on the Billboard Top 200 Albums Chart (BB200), the rock band scored their first No.1 with its fifth studio effort, WONDERFUL WONDERFUL. The set -- which was released Sept. 22 through Island Records -- debuts atop the chart with 118,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending Sept. 28, according to Nielsen Music. Of that sum, 111,375 were in traditional album sales.
The Killers’ previous studio album, Battle Born, launched at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 with 113,000 copies sold in 2012 (before the chart transitioned from a pure sales ranking to a consumption based chart in late 2014).
In total, the group has claimed eight chart entries, with five of those reaching the top 10.

Billboard Top Country Albums (Chart issue week of October 14, 2017)
Top Country Albums now ranks the most popular country albums of the week, as compiled by Nielsen Music, based on multi-metric consumption (blending traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA), and streaming equivalent albums (SEA)).
10 digital track sales from an album = 1 track equivalent album (TEA) “sale”
1,500 on demand song streams from an album to one streaming equivalent album (SEA) “sale”.
Nielsen Music compiles the sales and streaming data. Billboard continues to publish pure album sales charts (subscription to billboard biz ), exclusively comprising Nielsen’s sales data.

Based on consumption data Thomas Rhett with LIFE CHANGES (Valory/Big Machine Label Group) again led Billboard Top Country Albums for a third week (#3-13 Billboard 200; 27,000 equivalent album units, down 31%) selling 12,900 copies (down 37%; 3-week total 127,300).

Midland's 'On The Rocks' Is #1 Country Album (sales)
Midland with ON THE ROCKS (Big Machine Records) landed a #1 Country album sales debut with the band's first-ever release. It made a bow at No.2 on Top Country Albums (#20 Billboard 200) selling 17,230 copies in pure sales (over 4,300 more than Rhett).

The #1 album crown came after the group's debut single, "Drinkin' Problem," scored the top spot on the MEDIABASE Country singles chart.

Additionally, MIDLAND's follow-up, "Make A Little," has been the most-added single at Country radio for two consecutive weeks.

Rocks follows Midland’s self-titled EP, which peaked at No.38 on Top Country Albums (Aug. 5). The group’s launch song, “Drinkin’ Problem,” hit No.3 on Country Airplay.

Follow-up “Make a Little” jumped 54-41, soaring 151% to 3.1 million impressions.

The three piece throw things back and dive bar country never sounded so good!

Country Music People (Rating: 5 STARS Album of the Month) …I’m just asking myself whether it’s what’s in the grooves or what it stands for that I rate it so highly…hey! Country music might be making a comeback!

Allmusic (Rating: 4 STARS) ...The group's debut On the Rocks is proudly out of step with the sounds of commercial country in 2017, containing nary a trace of electronics or hip-hop. Unlike other country throwbacks, Midland don't revive hardfloor honky tonk. They're bringing back the mellow, easy sounds of '80s country, sounding like a cross between Alabama, George Strait, and middle-aged Merle Haggard....It's a warm, rich, and detailed love letter to a smooth style of country music that's fallen out of fashion.

Six Shooter Country.com (Rating: 10/10) ...The album opens up with the country tear-jerker ‘Lonely For You Only’. This track sets the stall out for the type of album that we can expect to follow. The song is co-written by the band with Rhett Akins and Josh Osborne and transports you back to the 1980’s with its smooth music and vocal harmonies. Midland are a band that immediately make you feel as if you’re listening to them in a smoky dive bar and the lyrics convey the desperation of an old country singer pouring his heart out over his lost woman .....This is country music. There’s no other way of putting it. Midland are doing something with their music which I genuinely don’t think has been done so successfully for a long time. The record is perfect track for track and there are no points where you want to turn it off or skip on to the next one. It’s absolutely brimming with atmosphere and, as I keep saying, transports you to places with it’s lyrics.....One thing that I can be sure of is that it is one of my favourite albums of all time.

Sounds Like Nashville (Rating: Very Positive)…Midland’s debut album, On the Rocks, is a memorable walk back in time. Blending classic country music from the ’70s and ’80s with their own flair, the 13-track release brings to mind popular artists like Gary Stewart, Keith
Whitley, Johnny Rodriguez and Johnny Lee. Meanwhile, country legends Merle Haggard, Buck Owens, Waylon Jennings, George Jones and George Strait have indisputably left their mark on the Texas trio, too....Traditional country music is well known for songs about cheating and there is no shortage of lamenting over the end of a relationship throughout On the Rocks. Songs like “At Least You Cried” has Midland questioning if an ex ever took them seriously with horn accompaniment giving a mariachi band vibe and recalling acts before them like Johnny Rodriguez....For those questioning where quality country music has gone, Midland is indisputably the answer. Their striking harmonies, traditional country instrumentation and visual storytelling transports listeners to a simpler time with authentic songs that aren’t chasing a trend, and instead, are showcasing an artist’s heart. With their infectious lead single “Drinkin’ Problem” recently topping the charts, traditional country fans can rejoice as Midland is here to stay.

Taste Of Country (Rating: Positive)  Everything about On the Rocks comes with nostalgia. Songs like “Nothin’ New Under the Neon” sound like songs you’d hear during a barroom scene in a modern Western movie. It’d start but fade as the characters — likely a mustachioed troubadour and his pretty lil’ thing — decide it just isn’t going to work out. “Nothin’ neeeewwwwww, under the neon,” he cries out like an injured wolf.
“Altitude Adjustment” is the most obvious example of Midland’s at times poetic lyricism. This is the most clever stoner song you’ll ever hear — the title could become the next great coded phrase for smoking marijuana.
Just one or two more deviations would break up this 46 minutes nicely. As is, the sound gets redundant toward the end. That’s not an indictment of “Electric Rodeo” or “Somewhere In the Wind” as much as it is a conversation that lasts a little too long, even if it is rich, smart and satisfying. Key Tracks: “Make a Little,” “Drinkin’ Problem,” “Burn Out,” “Out of Sight”

Exclaim.ca (Rating: 9/10) ..Taking inspiration from popular entertainment practices of the 1800s and country singers in the 1920s such as Jimmie Rodgers, Midland's lead vocalist, Mark Wystrach, affixes a yodel on their second single, "Make a Little." It all adds up to a charming and favourable album

A cappella country outfit Home Free bounded onto Top Country Albums at No.3 (#28 Billboard 200) with 14 track TIMELESS (Columbia; Amazon UK - UK iTunes - Amazon.com), with 16,400 copies in pure sales and marking the act’s strongest sales week.
Home Free broke through when it won the 2013 season of NBC’s The Sing-Off.

Timeless marks its fifth appearance on Top Country Albums and fourth top 10. Its 2016 holiday set Full of (Even More) Cheer is its highest peaking (No.2).

Timeless is the follow-up to Full Of (Even More) Cheer and Country Evolution. It features 11 songs that are frequently requested by fans and four original tracks. The Deluxe Edition features three additional covers.

This new album encompasses so many emotions with these classic songs. It’s about those universal timeless feelings and experiences, and we’re incredibly excited to share it with everyone,” said Austin Brown (high tenor).
To celebrate the album release Home Free played shows in Minneapolis on 23rd September and Nashville on 25th September.

Former multi-week No.1 Luke Combs with THIS ONE’S FOR YOU (River House/ Columbia Nashville/Sony Music Nashville) held at No.4 (#33-40 Billboard 200) selling 4,400 copies (17-week total 119,700).

Chris Stapleton with TRAVELLER (MERCURY/ UMGN) No.5 (41-50 Billboard 200) selling 4,800 copies (down 11%; 126-week total 2,075,300). Stapleton’s From a Room: Volume 1 (Mercury/Universal Music Group Nashville) fell 10-12 (74-78 BB200) selling 5,600 copies (down 4%; 21-week total 525,000).

In his third week Dustin Lynch with CURRENT MOOD (Broken Bow/Broken Bow Music Group) fell 3-6 (#32-51 Billboard 200) selling 6,045 copies (down 24%; 3-week total 37,300).

Chris Janson with second full-length, EVERYBODY (Warner Bros./Warner Music Nashville), made a bow at No.7 (#53 on Top Country Albums (11,000 units; 8,100 in pure sales). The set follows his first LP, BUY ME A BOAT, which started and peaked at No.4 on the Top Country Albums chart dated Nov. 21, 2015 (18,536 sold).

Everybody has produced two singles thus far: “Holdin’ Her” peaked at Nos. 20 and 25 on Country Airplay and Hot Country Songs, respectively. “Fix a Drink” held at its No.10 high on Country Airplay, increasing 14% to 27.9 million, while leaping to a new Hot Country Songs peak (17-11).

Chris Janson's New Album Captures His Moods - People

Allmusic (Rating: 3.1/2 STARS) Despite a title promising that Janson wrote a song for everyone, his 2017 sequel, Everybody, fixes that problem by telegraphing strongly and clearly that he's a nice guy next door. Sometimes, Janson pushes this angle too hard, as on the unfortunate album closer, "Drunk Girl," where he appears to want to be given credit for not taking advantage of an intoxicated stranger. ..While he sings about "Redneck Life" and opens up the album asking "Who's Your Farmer," Janson never sounds particularly rural -- the surfaces of Everybody are entirely too slick, the rockers designed for arenas, not beer joints -- but in 2017, his urbanity isn't necessarily modern...Maybe portions of Everybody recall all these stars, but Janson stitches together these elements in an amiable, casual fashion that belies the sturdiness of his craft. He delivers these (mostly) sweet songs with a grin and the hooks aren't pushed, they roll easy, and these two qualities turn Everybody into a sunny, appealing album.

Sounds Like Nashville by Chuck Dauphin (Rating: Positive) … The album is a perfect mix of everything that Janson does so exceedingly well. If you want fast-pace, he can fill the bill. Songs like the opening “Who’s Your Farmer” have every bit as much charm and attitude as anything from his first disc...As a songwriter, Janson shines the brightest on the masterfully written and produced “Drunk Girl.” Featuring the incomparable keyboard work of the amazing Gordon Mote, Janson delivers a message for the ages and gives a performance that I can almost guarantee we all may be talking about at a future awards show....Wisely, for the most part (“Name On It” being the lone exception – a song that just sounds like anyone could have recorded it , in spite of it being a Janson original), producer Scott Hendricks is letting Chris Janson be Chris Janson… and from the sound of this disc, that is a very good thing to be these days!

Kane Brown with self-titled KANE BROWN (Zone 4/RCA Nashville) fell 6-8 (#43-56 BB200) selling 2,200 copies (43-week total 196,500).
Brett Young with self-titled debut (BMLG) fell 7-9 (#59-64 BB200) selling 2,700 copies (33-week total 139,000).
Sam Hunt with MONTEVALLO (MCA Nashville | UMGN) fell 8-10 (#70-64 BB200).

Outside the Top 10
Jon Pardi with CALIFORNIA SUNRISE fell 9-11 (#70-71 BB200) selling 1,800 copies (67-week total 184,200).

Old Dominion’s HAPPY ENDINGS (RCA Nashville/Sony Music Nashville) fell 12-15 (90-115 BB200) in their 5th week selling 2,100 copies (down 20%; 5-week total 46,100).

In his second frame Kip Moore with SLOWHEART (MCA Nashville/Universal Music Group Nashville) slumped 15-25 selling  2,500 copies (down 38%, 3-week total 31,800).

Outside the Top 25
In their second week Big & Rich with DID IT FOR THE PARTY (B&R/Thirty Tigers) plummeted 2-28 (Falling off the Billboard 200 from No9) selling 3,700 copies (down 86%; 2-week total 30K) falling 1-9 on Country Sales.

Chris Hillman with BIDIN' MY TIME (Rounder | Concord) made a debut at No.37 selling 3,398 copies.
A founding member of the Byrds, Flying Burrito Brothers, Manassas, and the Desert Rose Band, is widely acknowledged as a seminal figure in the creation of country rock and an architect of American popular music.

The Press Release stated: Hillman’s new album Bidin’ My Time puts that pedigree on ferocious display. Produced by Tom Petty and executive produced by Herb Pedersen, the project captures a rarity: an icon who has never sounded better, making music with old friends for the sheer love of it. “I did everything I felt was right in the moment,” Hillman says of the recording process, before adding with characteristic sincerity, “I did my very best. That’s all any of us can do.”

Bidin’ My Time is an understated but undeniable masterpiece, relevant, layered, and bright. Folk, rock and roll, bluegrass, and the unmistakable country-rock Hillman helped pioneer come together seamlessly on songs written by Hillman and his peers in the 60s or in the last few years. Collaborators and admirers from Hillman’s storied career appear throughout the record, some as the album’s backing band, others in winking cameos. In addition to Petty, Bidin’ My Time features Hillman’s Byrds bandmates David Crosby and Roger McGuinn; the Heartbreakers’ Benmont Tench and Steve Ferrone; Desert Rose Band’s John Jorgenson and Pedersen; giants Jay Dee Maness and Mark Fain; the Shelters’ Josh Jové; and the Punch Brothers’ Gabe Witcher.
Petty’s debt to the Byrds is well documented, most of all by Petty himself––he penned the Byrds’ entry in Rolling Stones’ “100 Greatest Artists,” writing that the band is “immortal because they flew so high. For me, they're still way, way up there.” When he asked Pedersen to join him on a recent tour to sing background vocals, Pedersen called Hillman, his close friend for more than 50 years, from the road to check in. “I knew Tom, but I didn’t know him well,” says Hillman. “I didn’t think I’d make another record. I was done.”

Country Music People (Rating: 5 STARS) ..There may be dust on Hillman’s saddle and clouds in the mind, but he’s still at the top of the game

Pop Matters (Rating: 6/10)… Still, Bidin’ My Time finds this affable team player demonstrating that he deserves to be known to more than just the crate diggers. Hillman’s talent remains at high levels, even as he still lacks the widespread credit he so rightly deserves.

Allmusic (Rating: 4 STARS) .. It's a cozy sound, one that feels as intimate as a front porch but is delivered with the precision of seasoned pros, and having old tunes -- including sweet covers of the Everly Brothers' "Walk Right Back" and Tom Petty's "Wildflowers" -- threaded in between the excellent new tunes from Hillman helps make Bidin' My Time feel like an understated summation of everything Hillman's accomplished in his long, varied career......

Uncut (Rating: 8/10) Bidin’ My Time, Chris Hillman’s first solo album in more than a decade, opens with a familiar tune: a new version of “Bells of Rhymney”, adapted by Pete Seeger
from lyrics by the Welsh poet Idris Davies. Hillman has been living with the song for most of his life, having first recorded it for The Byrds’ 1965 debut, Mr Tambourine Man, an album that melded folk songs with electric guitars and invented a new genre, simply called folk rock. Naturally, Hillmans’ voice has changed over the last half-century, taking on a slightly gruffer grain and adding a soft twang to his syllables, but the guitars still chime like church bells and he still harmonises sweetly with former bandmate David Crosby and long-time collaborator Herb Pederson.
Bidin’ My Time draws from every corner of Hillman’s long career, mixing folk rock and country rock and bluegrass into an amiable sound, somehow both modest and ambitious. Except on the sentimental “Such Is the World That We Live In”, that nostalgia sounds inviting and well-earned. The clean, crisp production recalls Rick Rubin’s work on Petty’s 1994 album Wildflowers, and Hillman underscores that connection by covering the title track to close the album on a ruminative note.

FALLING SHORT of Top 50:
On the Country Album Sales list (pure sales; old methodology)

Billy Strings with TURMOIL & TINFOIL (Apostol) made a debut at No.38 selling 1,000 copies.
The blurb reads:
Whether sharing stages with acoustic music royalty, crisscrossing the nation playing as a solo artist or performing high-energy, jaw-dropping sets at festivals, the reaction to Billy Strings tends to come in two varieties: “Who is this guy?” and “That kid can play!”. Raised in Michigan and based in Nashville, Strings — real name William Apostol — learned music from his father, who had learned it from his father, and his father before him.

Mac McAnally with SOUTHBOUND: THE ORCHESTRA PROJECT (Mailboat) made a debut at No.45 selling 700 copies.
The album features 16 tunes from his catalog, each one spotlighting members of Hattiesburg, Mississippi’s Festival South Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Jay Dean, accompanying McAnally’s performances.
This pile of songs runs across more than my entire career,” McAnnally noted. “My relationship with music has been around as long as I have. I am blessed to call my passion my ‘job’ and even more blessed to be in a position to play music and benefit not only my family, but many folks from my home state.”

Billboard Country Airplay (Chart issue week of October 14, 2017)

Kenny Chesney with “All the Pretty Girls” (Blue Chair/Columbia Nashville) rose 2-1 on Billboard’s Country Airplay chart (dated Oct. 14), increasing 7% to 47 million audience impressions in the week ending Oct. 1, according to Nielsen Music. On Hot Country Songs, the single remained bulleted at its No. 7 peak.
Chesney banked his 28th Country Airplay No.1, a roll that began more than 20 years ago on the chart dated Aug. 30, 1997, when “She’s Got It All,” his ninth entry, became his first No.1, for three weeks.

Few songs have as much summer in them as ‘All the Pretty Girls,’ which is why I wanted to record it,” Chesney told Billboard of the song (which debuted on the June 17 chart, four days before summer started). “To me, there’s a special excitement that is summer and being young and alive. I think the guys caught that in the studio, and in a year that we weren’t on the road, I think I still got to be a part of No Shoes Nation’s summer through this song.”

“Pretty Girls” was written by Nicolle Gaylon, Tommy Lee James and Josh Osborne, and is the fourth single from Chesney’s album COSMIC HALLELUJAH. It follows “Bar at the End of the World,” which peaked at No.10 on the Country Airplay list dated May 13; “Setting the World on Fire,” featuring P!nk (No.1, Nov. 5, 2016); and “Noise” (No.6, July 16, 2016).
In collecting his 28th Country Airplay No. 1, Chesney is right behind Tim McGraw’s record 29, dating to the chart’s Jan. 20, 1990, inception. Alan Jackson and George Strait share third place with 26 No. 1s apiece.
