Billboard Top 200 / Country Album Chart News (Chart issue week of March 31, 2018)

The Billboard 200 chart measures multi-metric album consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA).

Singer/rapper XXXTentacion notched his first No.1 album on the Billboard Top 200 Album Chart (BB200), as his second studio effort, ?, bowed atop the list. The set, which was released on March 16 via his own Bad Vibes Forever label and distributed by Caroline, starts with 131,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending March 22, according to Nielsen Music. Of that sum, 19,586 were in traditional album sales.
While ? garnered 20,000 in album sales, and 5,000 TEA units, streaming activity drove the album to No.1. The title collected 106,000 SEA units, which equates to 159.4 million on-demand audio streams of tracks from the album during the set’s opening week (each SEA unit is equal to 1,500 on-demand audio streams). In fact, even without album sales or TEA units, ? would have still debuted at No.1. The set logged the second-largest streaming week for an album in 2018, behind only the debut frame of Migos’ Culture II, with 150,000 SEA units (224.6 million on-demand audio streams).

Scotty McCreery collected his fifth top 10 album, as SEASONS CHANGE debuts at No.7 with 40,000 units (34,382 of that sum is in traditional album sales). The new set is his first for the Thirty Tigers label, after having previously recordings for 19/Interscope/Mercury. The 2011 American Idol winner’s last studio set, SEE YOU TONIGHT, debuted and peaked at No. 6 on the list dated Nov. 2, 2013. He previously visited the top 10 with Christmas With Scotty McCreery (No. 4, 2012), his studio debut CLEAR DAY (No. 1, 2011) and American Idol Season 10 Highlights: Scotty McCreery (No. 10, 2011).

Billboard Top Country Albums (Chart issue week of March 31, 2018)
Top Country Albums now ranks the most popular country albums of the week, as compiled by Nielsen Music, based on multi-metric consumption (blending traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA), and streaming equivalent albums (SEA)).
10 digital track sales from an album = 1 track equivalent album (TEA) “sale”
1,500 on demand song streams from an album to one streaming equivalent album (SEA) “sale”.
Nielsen Music compiles the sales and streaming data. Billboard continues to publish pure album sales charts (subscription to billboard biz ), exclusively comprising Nielsen’s sales data.

Scotty McCreery, who won the 10th season of American Idol in 2011, debuts at No.1 on Billboard Top Country Albums,
McCreery tallies his third Top Country Albums No. 1, all of which have debuted at the summit, as Seasons Change (Triple Tigers/RED), his third proper LP, arrives in the penthouse of the chart dated March 31. It earned 40,000 equivalent album units (34,000 of them traditional album sales) in the week ending March 22, according to Nielsen Music.

The singersongwriter co-wrote all the tracks on the 11-song set, which was produced by Aaron Eshuis, Derek Wells and Frank Rogers.
“It’s awesome to learn that SEASONS CHANGE has debuted at No. 1 on Top Country Albums,” said McCreery. “It’s been almost five years since my last album [See You Tonight], and to know that people have been waiting for new music from me is humbling. My fans have always been so supportive. I’m so thankful for them, and I’m glad they are enjoying the new music.”
Seasons Change’s launch single, “Five More Minutes,” became McCreery’s first Country Airplay No.1 (March 3). On Hot Country Songs, which blends airplay, streaming and sales data, the track hit a career-best No. 4 (Feb. 24). Follow-up “This Is It” goes for adds at country radio on April 23.

See You Tonight entered the chart at No. 1 on Nov. 2, 2013, with 52,000 copies sold. His first LP, Clear as Day, arrived at No. 1 on Oct. 22, 2011 (197,000 sold).

CHART HISTORY
Seasons Change marks McCreery’s sixth top five title on Top Country Albums.
He first charted with two Idol recap sets in 2011.
In June 2011 Scotty scored the best-ever iTunes-exclusive album in American Idol 10: Scotty McCreery selling 23,196 copies. The album collected 10 of his best performances of the week, including “I Love You This Big,” the Idol coronation single that debuted at #1 on the Billboard Top Country Digital Singles Chart with over 173,000 copies sold – again only at iTunes – and that also gave him a Top 10 Billboard Hot 200 chart debut.

He became only the third Idol winner, after the first two idols Kelly Clarkson and Reuben Studdard (both 2003 debuts), to top the charts with his first week out of the gate.
CLEAR AS DAY (released October 4, 2011) opened with 196,739 sales and sold a strong 342,000 albums in its first three weeks. By Jan 2012 McCreery’s Clear As Day was just certified Platinum (131,000 copies away from scanning that number at retail. By April 11, 2012 it had sold platinum at retailed sweeping past the 1-million mark (1,016,000 total sales)

Released October 16, 2012 the 2011 "American Idol" winner Scott McCreery returned with his second studio album, SEE YOU TONIGHT, which made a debut at No.6 on the Billboard 200 with 52,240 copies sold and made a bow at No.1 on the Billboard Top Country Albums chart, his second chart-topper on that list.  As of April 2015, the album has sold 269,900 copies in the United States.
His holiday effort, "CHRISTMAS WITH SCOTTY MCCREERY," (released October 16, 2012) hit No. 2 on the country chart in 2012 and No.4 on the Billboard 200 opening with 40,258 sales. By the chart frame week of Jan 12, 2013 it had sold 348,472 copies.

Monday, March 26, 2018: “It’s been quite a journey these last few years, and to learn that Seasons Change has debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Country Albums Chart is awesome and so gratifying,” said McCreery.

“I’m glad everyone is enjoying the new music. I am so thankful to my fans, who have always been so supportive. With a No. 1 album, my first-ever No. 1 single, and my upcoming wedding to the love of my life, I just don’t see how 2018 can get any better!”

Seasons Change, which the Tennessean called “an intensely personal album” is McCreery’s first record in five years – proving sometimes, things are worth the wait. Perhaps his most anticipated project yet, the album, released on Triple Tigers Records, catches fans up to where McCreery is in life today, and exactly how he got here.
Unlike his previous releases, Seasons Change showcases McCreery’s songwriting talents on all 11 tracks, featuring collaborations with Jessi Alexander (Dierks Bentley, Brad Paisley, Blake Shelton), Monty Criswell (Eric Church, Darius Rucker, George Strait) and more. With themes such as losing loved ones, moving out on his own, falling in love and coming of age, Seasons Change is a reflective and honest narrative of McCreery’s experience navigating life in his early twenties.

A No.1 debut is not the first recognition McCreery’s new music has seen. The single “Five More Minutes," which was released independently last year, earned McCreery his first No. 1 single to date, reaching the top spot on both the Billboard and Mediabase/Country Aircheck Country Airplay charts. The song has become the highest-ranking single of his career and is RIAA Gold certified (though actual pure sales are 294,000).
Just as seasons change, a new one begins for the now 24-year-old. “There aren’t too many rebirths that happen in Nashville,” he told Rolling Stone. Yet, McCreery is back, stronger than ever and ready for the sure-to-be promising seasons ahead.

Critical reception for Scotty McCreery’s Seasons Change:

Roughstock (Rating: Positive): …Seasons Change not only feels like an intimate portrait of
who Scotty McCreery is in 2018 but it also sets the template of where his future albums will go. This music truly IS Scotty McCreery.

Allmusic (Rating: 4/5 Stars) …There's a charm to his light touch, but that wouldn't be enough to make Seasons Change as ingratiating as it is. That's all down to all the smartly constructed commercial cuts, given a handsome polish by producers Frank Rogers, Derek Wells, and Aaron Eshuis. When combined with the singer's ease, these elements turn Seasons Change into McCreery's best album yet.

Sounds Like Nashville (Rating; Very Positive):…McCreery doesn’t throw any curve balls on Seasons Change, mainly ignoring the common trends on current country radio to deliver an authentic album that sticks to his roots and relies on his own blend of traditional country…McCreery doesn’t throw any curve balls on Seasons Change, mainly ignoring the common trends on current country radio to deliver an authentic album that sticks to his roots and relies on his own blend of traditional country.

The Oak Ridge Boys with 17TH AVENUE REVIVAL (Lightning Rod Amazon UK -  Amazon.com) made a debut at No.44 (#12 Country Sales) selling 2,941 copies.
Country Music Hall of Fame members, Grand Ole Opry members, and five-time GRAMMY winning group, The Oak Ridge Boys announced the release of their Lightning Rod Records projectproduced by critically-acclaimed producer Dave Cobb on March 16. This is the group’s second project with Cobb, who produced the Oaks’ celebrated The Boys Are Back album released in 2009.
“Having been in The Oak Ridge Boys for almost 52 years,” says Duane Allen, “it can be difficult for me to imagine a place where we have not been. However, Dave Cobb had that vision, and the result is 17th Avenue Revival.”
“Old roads turned into new roads on this album,” added Oaks’ member Joe Bonsall.
For the new project, Cobb’s vision for the group was to dig way back into their roots of gospel music. But a different kind of gospel. One that took a hard look at the early days of rock and roll, which was influenced by spiritual, or black gospel.
Under Cobb’s direction, they touched on uncharted territory—and for a long-tenured act like The Oak Ridge Boys, that’s saying something. Somewhat retro, yet new and fresh at the same time, there was no vocal stacking and very few overdubs. For two of the songs, the Boys gathered around one microphone and let the harmonies shine, just as Dave Cobb had planned initially.
“Legendary Studio A on 17th Avenue South became a special, almost spiritual place, and for a few weeks it served as a beacon of creativity,” says Allen. The result is a recording slated to go down in history, for old and new fans alike.

FALLING SHORT of Top 50:
On the Country Album Sales list (pure sales; old methodology)

Shenandoah with 12 track RELOADED (BMG | Amazon UK) made a debut at No.20 selling 1,300 copies.
One thing on the bucket list of country favorites Shenandoah was to record a live album. It’s something that lead singer Marty Raybon told Billboard they have wanted to do since their peak commercial years in the 1980s and 1990s.

“We had always wanted to capture our show live," he says. "I think it’s a way of getting a little more of an insight into the artist, what they are all about, and what their show consists of. I think it’s a great way to advertise what you do so that people will come out to see you.”
Now, three decades after the Grammy winners hit the top ten for the first time with “She Doesn’t Cry Anymore,” they got that chance – sort of (the band’s first release for BMG)
