Billboard Top 200 / Country Album Chart News (Chart issue week of June 16, 2018)

The Billboard 200 chart measures multi-metric album consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA).

Kanye West Earns Eighth No. 1 Album on Billboard 200 Chart With 'Ye'
Kanye West landed his eighth No. 1 album on the Billboard Top 200 Album Chart (BB200), as his latest studio effort, Ye, bowed atop the list.
The set -- which was released on June 1 via G.O.O.D. Music/Def Jam Recordings -- earned 208,000 equivalent album units in the week ending June 7, according to Nielsen Music, and is the fifth-largest week for an album in 2018. Of Ye’s starting sum, 84,860 were in traditional album sales.
Seventh-Largest Streaming Debut Week Ever: Of Ye’s first week units, 120,000 were SEA units. That sum equates to 180.1 million on-demand audio streams for the set’s seven songs during the tracking week (as each SEA units equals 1,500 on-demand audio streams).

Country singer Luke Combs nabbed a new chart high with his THIS ONE’S FOR YOU album, as the set zoomed from No.39 to No. 4, thanks to a deluxe reissue of the album on June 1. The set, bolstered by five new songs, garnered 55,000 units (up 314 percent). The album blows past its previous best week, logged when it bowed at No. 5 with 43,000 units on the June 24, 2017-dated tally.

Billboard Top Country Albums (Chart issue week of June 16, 2018)
Top Country Albums now ranks the most popular country albums of the week, as compiled by Nielsen Music, based on multi-metric consumption (blending traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA), and streaming equivalent albums (SEA)).
10 digital track sales from an album = 1 track equivalent album (TEA) “sale”
1,500 on demand song streams from an album to one streaming equivalent album (SEA) “sale”.
Nielsen Music compiles the sales and streaming data. Billboard continues to publish pure album sales charts (subscription to billboard biz ), exclusively comprising Nielsen’s sales data.

Luke Combs with now deluxe version of THIS ONE’S FOR YOU (River House/ Columbia Nashville/Sony Music Nashville) rebounded 3-1 (#39-4 Billboard 200) selling 23,470 copies compared to previous weeks’ 1,800 copies (up 1203%; 53-week total 246,770) to lead the chart a fourth week at No.1.

The deluxe version of the set includes five new tracks, led by “Beautiful Crazy,” up 18-13 on Hot Country Songs. The other four also debut: “Must’ve Never Met You” (No. 14), “Houston, We Got a Problem” (No. 22), “A Long Way” (No. 33) and “She Got the Best of Me” (No. 36).

Former 5 non-consecutive weeks No.1 Jason Aldean with REARVIEW TOWN (Macon/Broken Bow Records) held at No.2 (27-10 Billboard 200) selling 25,029 copies (up 303% on previous week 6,200 haul; 8-week total 282,500).

Kane Brown with his 10 non-consecutive week No.1 SELF-TITLED fell 1-3 (#23-24 Billboard 200) selling 5,083 copies (79-week total 404,800).

Former No.1 Thomas Rhett with LIFE CHANGES (Valory/Big Machine Label Group) held at No.4 (#45-46 BB200) selling 1,729 (39-week total 273,700).

Michael Ray with 11 track AMOS (Atlantic Records | Amazon UK - UK iTunes - Amazon.com) made a debut at No.5 (#154 BB200) selling 6,713 copies.
Michael Ray burst onto the scene with his self-titled, debut album featuring two RIAA Platinum-certified No. 1 hits, “Kiss You in the Morning” and “Think A Little Less.”

Promising his most personal to date, the album is named after Ray’s grandfather, AMOS, who was a huge influence on him not just musically – also in fueling his love for country music. In fact, Ray first began singing and performing in his grandfather’s band when he was only nine years old. To this day he still plays Amos’ hand-me-down guitar, a 1978 Les Paul, as a reminder of the time they spent together sharing stories, learning songs and making memories.
One memory in particular stays with Ray to this day: “The day I made my debut on the Opry stage, all I could think about was how he would be so proud,” Ray shares of his late grandfather, whose passing was just two months prior to his first bow on her stage. Ray was set to fulfill the dream they crafted over a decade before while touring dive bars, American legions and pool halls when he got the call from his family that Amos had suffered a heart attack. “Looking back, that moment was a pivotal one--our family lost its patriarch. So, when we started making this record, before I would record vocals on the song I would ask myself, ‘is this a song I would have played proudly for him?’ It makes this album that much more special to think he would have said, ‘Ray, that’s a good one.’”
Amos features 11 tracks including Ray’s current top 20 and climbing single, “Get To You.”

Chris Stapleton with TRAVELLER (MERCURY/ UMGN) fell 5-6 (52-54 BB200) selling 3,513 copies (162-week total 2,302,000) as his set From A Room: Volume 1 (Mercury/Universal Music Group Nashville) dropped 14-17 (#126-139 BB200) selling 3,274 copies (57-week total 801,400) and From A Room: Volume 2 fell off the top 25 for the first time 22-26 (168-174 BB200) selling 3,248 copies (26-week total 397,300).

Brett Young with self- titled BRETT YOUNG (BMLG) fell 6-7 (#65-63 Billboard 200) selling 1,500 copies (69-week total 212,100).
Former No.1 Keith Urban with GRAFFITI U (Hit Red/Capitol Nashville/Universal Music Group Nashville) fell 7-8 (#70-74 Billboard 200) selling 5,241 copies (6-week total 183,600)
Former No.1 Luke Bryan with WHAT MAKES YOU COUNTRY (Capitol Nashville | UMGN) fell 8-9 (#83-85 Billboard 200) selling 2,935 copies (26-week total 296,000).

Outside the Top 10
Former No.1 Blake Shelton with TEXOMA SHORE (Warner Bros./Warner Music Nashville) climbed 20-14 (#164-127 BB200) selling 2,498 copies (up 78%; 31-week total 233,900)

Alt-Country & Americana outfit American Aquarium with 10 track set THINGS CHANGE (New West Records | Amazon UK - UK iTunes - Amazon.com) made a debut at No.20 (#154 Billboard 200) selling 5,196 copies.

The album also landed at No.5 on Billboard's Emerging Artists chart (dated June 16), No.7 on Americana/Folk Albums and No. 30 on Top Rock Albums with 5,000 equivalent album units, according to Nielsen Music.
The LP is the first for the group, which formed in 2006 in Raleigh, North Carolina, on the New West Records label, and its first to make the Billboard 200 (No. 154).
The Emerging Artists chart ranks the most popular developing artists of the week, using the same formula as the all-encompassing Billboard Artist 100, which measures artist activity across multiple Billboard charts, including the Billboard Hot 100, Billboard 200 and the Social 50. (The Artist 100 lists the most popular acts, overall, of the week.) However, the Emerging Artists chart excludes acts that have notched a top 25 entry on either the Hot 100 or Billboard 200, as well as artists that have achieved two or more top 10s on Billboard's "Hot" song genre charts and/or consumption-based "Top" album genre rankings.

In his fifth week Morgan Wallen with IF I KNOW ME (Big Loud Records) fell 18-22 (#150-159 Billboard 200).

Former No1 from Kacey Musgraves with GOLDEN HOUR (MCA Nashville/Universal Music Group Nashville) fell 15-25 (#128-165 BB200) selling 2,014 copies (10-week total 80,100).

Outside the Top 25

Dave Alvin And Jimmie Dale Gilmore with 12-track DOWNEY TO LUBBOCK (Yep Roc | Amazon UK - UK iTunes - Amazon.com) made a debut at No.41 selling 3,413 copies.
American Songwriter Review (Rating: 4 STARS)….You don’t need to know the backstory to this meeting of the minds of Dave Alvin and Jimmie Dale Gilmore, two of Americana’s
most respected journeyman roots rockers. That’s because they do the work for you on the opening title track to this partnership where they trade vocals explaining their careers and somewhat unlikely collaboration on this disc’s only co-write. Ex-Blaster Alvin hails from Downey, California, and ex-Flatlander Gilmore calls Lubbock, Texas home. The two are a decade removed in age but found common ground in their love of Americana music, specifically the blues, rock and roll, R&B, and folk acts that played LA’s famous Ash Grove club which they both frequented. These guys are road-hardened troubadours who know the once-endless highway is going to soon end but are determined to keep the faith. They do that beautifully on this studio alliance…. A full band backs the twosome and while this might seem like an unusual pairing on paper, the result is an alternatively sweet, touching, rousing and undeniably heartfelt set that plays to both artist’s strengths while pushing each slightly outside their comfort zone. Hopefully, there will be a follow-up to further expand on this success that brings out the best in both Alvin and Gilmore and seems to just scratch the surface of their deep Americana pedigrees.

FALLING SHORT of Top 50:
On the Country Album Sales list (pure sales; old methodology)

Various Artists with Throwback Tunes: 90s Country (Hip-O | Ume) made a debut at No.29.

Thompson Square with 11 track MASTERPIECE (2018 Thompson Square | Amazon UK - UK iTunes - Amazon.com) made a debut at No.31 selling less than a 1,000 copies.
The husband-and-wife country duo comprised of Keifer Thompson and Shawna Thompson, announced their first release post parting ways with Stoney Creek Records.
The 11-track project holds new tracks "Millionaires," "Good Day," "Breakers," and more. It marks the couple's first album in more than five years and includes production by Nathan Chapman and Dann Huff, but also a handful of self-produced songs.
Released on March 26, 2013 their second album, JUST FEELS GOOD (Stoney Creek Records), which included the top 5 Country Airplay single "If I Didn't Have You", made a debut at #13 on the Top 200 and at #4 on Billboard Top Country Albums, selling 35,816 units. That marked the country couple’s second top 15 album. THOMPSON SQUARE reached #15 in 2011.
"This album is called 'Masterpiece,' and the definition of a masterpiece is an artist's life's work," shared Thompson Square's Keifer Thompson. "When we're 80 years old and we look back, we want to be able to say we're really proud of all the stuff we did." Added Thompson Square's Shawna Thompson, "It is extremely diverse. We didn't design it that way, but Keifer and I love all types of music, and I think that shows more on this record than any of the others."
On their newfound musical freedom, Keifer told South New Jersey Daily, "...There is a freedom associated with us right now. We are literally making all of the decisions and we can pick what songs we want to do and how to do them, and not have to answer to anybody. It’s good and bad, but right now we are enjoying the freedom, the creative freedom I should say."
Shawna grew up in Chatom, AL, where she listened to acts like Alabama and Reba McEntire on the radio and learned country songs from her guitar-playing father. Keifer hails from Miami, OK, where he was drawn to everything from Roger Miller to Merle Haggard and punk rock to heavy metal before honing his songwriting talent by listening to artists like Bruce Springsteen and Tom Petty. Shawna and Keifer relocated to Nashville the same week, and met at a singing competition a few days later -- by all accounts, it was love at first sight. Both pursued solo careers in Nashville, though, for several years before deciding to go as a duo when they signed with Stoney Creek Records early in 2010 and were soon working on a debut album. An initial single, “Let’s Fight,” was released by the label in June of 2010, followed by a second signature smash single, “Are You Gonna Kiss Me or Not,” a month later in July

Dierks Bentley with “Woman, Amen” (Capitol Nashville) climbed 3-1 in its 25th week on Billboard’s Country Airplay chart (dated June 16), up 9 percent to 42.2 million audience impressions in the week ending June 10, according to Nielsen Music.
On Hot Country Songs, “Amen” places at No. 9 after reaching No. 8.

“The most gratifying thing has been seeing people connect the song to the woman in their life who has been there for them,” Bentley tells Billboard. “There have been so many beautiful tributes sent in and posted on social media. Fans honoring the woman who has loved, supported and sacrificed for them has definitely added even more meaning to the song.”
“Amen” is Bentley’s 16th Country Airplay leader, ranking him in 13th place for the most No. 1s since the chart launched in January 1990. (Tim McGraw leads all acts with 29.) Bentley first reigned with his debut hit, “What Was I Thinkin’,” which topped the list dated Sept. 27, 2003. He most recently ruled on Oct. 1, 2016, with “Different for Girls,” featuring Elle King.
“Amen,” penned by Bentley, Josh Kear and Ross Copperman, is the lead single from Bentley’s ninth studio album, The Mountain, released June 8. Copperman produced the 13-song set with Jon Randall.

Keith Urban with “Coming Home” (Capitol Nashville), featuring Julia Michaels, rose 11-10 on Country Airplay (21.5 million, up less than 1 percent). “Home” marks his 39th Country Airplay top 10, the seventh-most in the chart’s history. George Strait leads with 61.
Urban’s run of top 10s, which includes 21 No. 1s, began with his second single, “Your Everything,” which peaked at No. 4 in 2000. The song began a Country Airplay record streak of 38 consecutive top 10 singles (in a lead role and promoted to country radio) that snapped when “Female” peaked at No. 12 on Feb. 24. (Carrie Underwood now owns the longest active streak of top 10s: 26.). Pop singer-songwriter Michaels hits the Country Airplay top 10 in her first visit to the chart.

Billboard Country Digital Singles Chart
(Chart issue week of June 16, 2018)

Florida Georgia Line with their new single “Simple” (BMLG) entered Country Digital Song Sales at No.1 (#3 New Entry Digital Songs) as the pair’s eighth leader, with first-week sales of 34,000.
It was 2 places behind Maroon 5's "Girls Like You," featuring Cardi which soared 12-1 on Digital Song Sales (82,000, up 331 percent), becoming Maroon 5's fourth leader and Cardi B's first.

“The song ‘Simple’ was born on the road on the Tree Vibez Bus,” said FGL’s Tyler Hubbard. “That was just a special song that was born out of an idea that I kinda had—just living in a world where things get so complicated and everybody seems to want to complicate things. Majority of the time, I just find that for us it’s just easy to keep it simple. There’s no need to complicate it, especially when it comes to love and [our] relationships with our wives and our families. Just a little reminder to simplify things every now and then and have a good time while you do it.”
