Billboard Top 200 / Country Album Chart News (Chart issue week of July 27, 2019)

The Billboard 200 chart measures multi-metric album consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA).

Ed Sheeran's 'No. 6 Collaborations Project' Debuts at No. 1 on Billboard 200 Albums Chart
Set launches with biggest week of 2019 for a pop album by a male artist.
Ed Sheeran scored his third No.1 album on the Billboard Top 200 Album Chart (BB200), as his star-studded No. 6 Collaborations Project album enters atop the tally.
The set, which was released on July 12 via Atlantic Records, bows with 173,000 equivalent album units earned in the U.S. in the week ending July 18, according to Nielsen Music. It marks the largest week of the year for a pop album by a male artist. Of that starting sum, 70,000 were in album sales.
Sheeran previously led the Billboard 200 with ÷ (Divide) in 2017 and x (Multiply) in 2014.
No. 6’s starting sum of 173,000 units is comprised of 70,000 in album sales, 10,000 in TEA units, and 93,000 in SEA units. The latter SEA units sum translates to 121.17 million on-demand audio streams for the set’s songs during the tracking week. That’s the biggest streaming week for a pop album by a male artist since the debut of Sheeran’s last album, ÷ (Divide), when it racked up 134.58 million on-demand audio streams for its tracks (March 25, 2017-dated chart).
Notably, No. 6’s healthy sales start of 70,000 was achieved without the employment of a concert ticket/album sale redemption offer, nor the selling of countless merchandise/album bundles -- as has become familiar to many a No. 1 album. No. 6’s sales were driven mostly by old-fashioned album sales through sellers like Target, Walmart, Amazon and iTunes.

Billboard Top Country Albums (Chart issue week of July 27, 2019)
Top Country Albums now ranks the most popular country albums of the week, as compiled by Nielsen Music, based on multi-metric consumption (blending traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA), and streaming equivalent albums (SEA)).
10 digital track sales from an album = 1 track equivalent album (TEA) “sale”
1,500 on demand song streams from an album to one streaming equivalent album (SEA) “sale”.
Nielsen Music compiles the sales and streaming data. Billboard continues to publish pure album sales charts (subscription to billboard biz ), exclusively comprising Nielsen’s sales data.

Ranked at #3 on Country Album Sales and logged at #39 on all-genre Top Album Sales based on consumption units Luke Combs with THIS ONE’S FOR YOU (River House/Columbia Nashville/Sony Music Nashville) remained at No.1 (#15-12 Billboard 200) to top the summit for a 42nd  non-consecutive week in 111 chart frames. The set has now passed Garth Brooks’ No Fences (which posted 41 weeks atop the chart starting in October 1990) to have the outright third-longest-leading album since the list launched in 1964. Just two titles have spent more time at No. 1: Shania Twain’s Come On Over, which dominated for 50 weeks beginning in November 1997, and Randy Travis’ Always & Forever, which ruled for 43 weeks starting in June 1987.

Combs’ new five-track EP THE PREQUEL (River House/Columbia Nashville/ Sony Music Nashville) fell 3-4 (#31-39 BB200) in its 6th frame.

Former No.1 Maren Morris with GIRL (Columbia Nashville/ Sony Music Nashville [SMN]) fell 8-9 (#66-71 BB200) in her 19th frame.

Florida Georgia Line with CAN’T SAY I AIN’T COUNTRY (Big Machine Label Group) rose 12-10 (#85-82 BB200) in their 22nd week.

Outside the Top 10

Former No.1 Kacey Musgraves with GOLDEN HOUR (MCA Nashville) rose 15-13 (#139-99 BB200) in her 63rd week.
Former No.1 Carrie Underwood with CRY PRETTY climbed 18-17 (#156-149 BB200) in her 44th week.
Lee Brice with his self-titled set (Curb) slipped 17-18 (#148-156 BB200) in his 22nd frame.

Billboard Country Airplay (Chart issue week of July 27, 2019)

ERIC CHURCH AT THE TOP WITH “SOME OF IT” No. 1 on both Billboard and Mediabase
Eric Church rolled up his eighth No.1 on Billboard’s Country Airplay chart as “Some of It” (EMI Nashville) ascended 2-1 on the tally dated July 27. The song reigns with a 9% increase to 41.1 million audience impressions in the week ending July 21, according to Nielsen Music.

On Hot Country Songs the track anchors at a No. 7 high. Written by Church, Jeff Hyde, Clint Daniels and Bobby Pinson, “Some” is the second single from Church’s sixth studio LP, DESPERATE MAN, praised as one of 2018’s top albums by American Songwriter, Billboard, Entertainment Weekly, Variety, Stereogum, The Los Angeles Times, NPR, Rolling Stone, USA Today and Vulture, among others. It debuted at No. 1 on Top Country Albums on the Oct. 20, 2018, chart with 116,000 equivalent album units. It has earned 413,000 units to date. Its title-track lead single peaked at No. 8 on Hot Country Songs last October after reaching No. 13 on Country Airplay.
“Some” marks Church’s lengthiest trip to the Country Airplay summit: 29 weeks. His prior most scenic trip was set by “Record
Year,” which topped the list on Aug. 13, 2016, in its 26th week, becoming his most recent No. 1 until “Some.”
Church first ruled the chart in his 10th of 30 appearances with “Drink in My Hand,” which led the Jan. 28, 2012, list. He subsequently hit No. 1 with “Springsteen,” his only multiweek leader (two weeks, starting June 23, 2012); “The Only Way I Know,” with Jason Aldean and Luke Bryan (Feb. 16, 2013); “Give Me Back My Hometown” (May 17, 2014); “Talladega” (Feb. 7, 2015); and as a featured artist on Keith Urban’s “Raise ’Em Up” (May 23, 2015).

Church’s Double Down Tour Resumes in September
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Continuing a dominant year characterized by unrivaled success on the road, Eric Church now pairs that feat with chart-topping success at Country radio as current single “Some Of It” tops both the Billboard and Mediabase charts.

Vulture added, “‘Some Of It’ coyly opens with a list of simple truths — ‘Beer don’t keep, love’s not cheap, and trucks don’t wreck themselves’ — and builds to a chorus about life being a game of patience and learning. You think he’s singing about the value of wisdom, and then the bridge deals a haymaker: ‘What really makes you a man / Is being true to her till your glass runs out of sand,’” before noting he “weaves excellence out of ordinary threads.”
However, the reflective track almost didn’t make the album. Church noted, “I was playing the album for a dear friend of ours and my wife was with me. This person loved the album, but my wife said, ‘but let me play you what did not make it,’ and the first thing she played was ‘Some Of It.’ It was always a favorite song of mine, and I listened to it that night and it is just… I am going to regret if I do not record this song. I called my manager that night and said, ‘hey we have got to talk.’ The recording was done, the record was essentially done, but I said, ‘I have got to do this, I have to add this song.’ Initially, all the stuff that I thought was going to be the pillars for this album just bombed. But I think it’s really interesting that the album took on an identity that allowed ‘Some Of It’ to make it from where it started to where it is now, and it just fit in the dialogue. To me, it made the album. I loved the album before it was on there - but it might be my favorite album now that it’s on there, so that’s the way I look at it.”

Additionally, Entertainment Weekly praised Church’s mastery of such “meditative mid-tempo numbers reflecting on simple truths – none better than the hard-won wisdom of ‘Some Of It’” at his recent Nissan Stadium show in Nashville, where he broke the venue’s concert attendance record with more than 56,000 fans just two weeks before awing the same stadium’s audience with a 30-minute, solo acoustic CMA Fest set that featured a medley of 17 hits.
Church also used his solo stadium show to debut the chart-topping song’s music video directed by Reid Long, which continues the jailbird storyline of his “Desperate Man” video (6.5 million YouTube Views)

The critically-acclaimed Double Down Tour continues this fall, resuming on Sept. 13 in Green Bay, Wisc.

Luke Bryan netted his 28th Country Airplay top 10 as “Knockin’ Boots” (Capitol Nashville) kicked 11-10, up 10% to 27.6 million impressions. He is the 15th artist to achieve that amount of top 10s. George Strait leads all artists with 61.

MIRANDA LAMBERT ACHIEVES CAREER BEST OPENING WEEK WITH “IT ALL COMES OUT IN THE WASH”
No. 1 Most Added, Lambert's New Single Garners 112 Impact Week Radio Stations
with 112 Billboard and Mediabase/Country Aircheck stations and SiriusXM The Highway onboard.

On the heels of Thursday’s nationwide premiere of her first taste of new solo music in nearly three years, Lambert achieved her career best opening week.
Miranda Lambert with “It All Comes Out in the Wash” (Vanner/RCA Nashville), the first single from her upcoming album, blasted onto Country Airplay at No. 19 with 11.2 million impressions. The track — penned by Lambert, Lori McKenna, Hillary Lindsey and Liz Rose — opened at No. 36 on Hot Country Songs. “Wash” marked Lambert’s second-best Country Airplay debut among 31 entries, after “Vice,” which arrived at No. 18 in August 2016. She boasted five No. 1s and 12 top 10s. She last topped the tally when she appeared on Jason Aldean’s “Drowns the Whiskey,” which ruled for two weeks starting in August 2018.

Critic’s praise of Lambert’s new Vanner Records/RCA Nashville single includes the following:

“‘All Comes Out in the Wash’ arrives as Lambert’s most exciting single in years, a return to the type of playful wordplay and lowdown country humor of her earlier work...”
Rolling Stone

“…the infectious, tongue-in-cheek tune is a welcome return for the singer-songwriter.”
Billboard
“…a cute-as-hell country bop that reminds us that "hard times do eventually pass," as she put it in a press release…”
NPR

“It All Comes Out In The Wash,” co-written by Lambert and The Love Junkies (Hillary Lindsey, Lori McKenna, Liz Rose), and an additional track, “Locomotive” (Lambert, Ashley Monroe and K.S. Rhoads), are both available now on
all streaming platforms and digital retailers. The two new songs were produced by Jay Joyce.
Lambert will hit the road for the Roadside Bars & Pink Guitars Tour this fall, with special guests Maren Morris and Elle King, as well as Pistol Annies, Tenille Townes, Ashley McBryde and Caylee Hammack on various dates.
