Ren Gill’s SICK BOI was the subject of a late and very effective social media campaign, which saw it glide to a victory margin of nearly 6,000, delivering the Welshman not just his first chart entry but also his first No.1.

Born in Bangor, usually resident in Brighton but based in Canada for medical treatment for much of the last year, and known mononymously as Ren, the 33-year-old has spoken movingly about the “turbulence of my physical and mental illness”, while observing that it has also been a source of “constant inspiration”. That inspiration is there for all to hear on his second album, Sick Boi, which debuts at No.1 on consumption of 18,653 units (6,226 CDs, 2,036 vinyl albums, 624 cassettes, 8,619 digital downloads and 1,148 sales-equivalent streams). 4,533 of those digital downloads – well over half – took place on Thursday, with a £4.99 digital version on Ren’s website offering an exclusive track and a trio of instrumentals unavailable elsewhere providing the main thrust.
