Billboard Top 200 / Country Album Chart News

Rock band Slipknot crowned the Billboard Top 200 Album Chart (BB200) for a second time, as their new album, .5: The Gray Chapter, debuted atop the list. The album sold 131,807 copies in the week ending Oct. 26, according to Nielsen SoundScan. It was released through Roadrunner Records, and is the group's fifth studio effort.
Slipknot last topped the list with their previous studio release, 2008's All Hope Is Gone, which debuted with 240,000 sold.
Pop veteran Neil Diamond collected his 18th top 10 album, as MELODY ROAD drove in at No.3 with 78,051 copies sold. The album was released on Capitol Records, making it the 73-year old's first studio effort for the label after decades with Columbia Records. He last visited the top 10 with his previous studio album, 2010's Dreams on Columbia Records (No. 8; 35,000 sold in its first week).
Scotlands’s very own Susan Boyle made her debut at No.16 selling 19,595 copies of her new set titled HOPE.

Last week's Billboard 200 No.1, Florida Georgia Line with ANYTHING GOES, fell to No.5 with 59,118 copies sold (down 70%, 2-week total 256,310; the album has a ZinePak at Walmart)) but held onto the No.1 on the Billboard Country Album Chart. The previous week and former BB200 No.1, Jason Aldean with OLD BOOTS, NEW DIRT, slipped 2-6 (#2 Country) with 56,176 sales (down 38%).

Little Big Town claimed their third top 10 effort, as PAIN KILLER (Capitol Nashville/UMGN) made a bow at No.7 on the BB200 (#3 Country) with 41,979 copies sold.

On the  sales/airplay/streaming hybrid Hot Country Songs chart, “Day Drinking,” the new set’s lead single has become the group’s sixth top 10 (moving 13-7) and has reached No. 5 on the Country Airplay tally. The harmony-focused foursome also claimed its fourth top 10, all tallied consecutively, on Billboard’s Top Country Albums chart. The band first reached the top 10 with A PLACE TO LAND, which debuted and peaked at No.10 in 2007.

Little Big Town's last album, their fifth studio set TORNADO (released Sept 11, 2012), powered by its hit lead single, "Pontoon,"  opened at No.2 start on the Billboard 200 giving the quartet its highest charting album ever with best sales week (112,758 copies sold, then 50,321 copies sold in week 2 down 55%). It also netted the group their second No.1 on the Country Albums chart and more than doubled the first week sales of previous release THE REASON WHY. By Dec 20, 2012 “Tornado” had sold 502,858 copies scanning GOLD at retail.
Following the 2013 CMA Awards Vocal Group of the Year winners Little Big Town (who performed single “Sober”) saw their 61-week album re-enter at No.61 on the BB200 (35-14 Country) and were one of biggest gainers for the chart week of Nov 23, 2013.
Sales of 7,000 (up 240%) saw “Tornado” scan PLATINUM at retail with a new tally of 1,003,000 copies. The RIAA had previously certified the album as Platinum on JULY 8, 2013 (1-million units shipped to retail)

Little Big Town teamed up again with producer Jay Joyce (Eric Church) to stretch individually and collectively on songs including the first funky single "Day Drinking," "Tumble And Fall," "Girl Crush" and "Silver And Gold."
Little Big Town didn't play it safe when it came to turning up their guitars and rocking out in the studio. LBT's Kimberly Schlapman told ABC News Radio, "It felt good, and it felt sassy. The
LBT Grand Ole Opry Induction
whole record felt sassy." The band members and their producer, Jay Joyce, didn't set any boundaries on how they wanted the album to sound, so there was a sense of freedom during the
recording process. Band member Jimi Westbrook shared there was a rebellious spirit in the studio, though they weren't rebelling against anything in particular. Describing their approach in the studio, Jimi said, "Let's not put boundaries, and let's just make some music and not be afraid to take it to a different place and to push it and go further and see what happens."
Some of Little Big Town's musical experiments got a little bizarre, but the group's Karen Fairchild explains those detours were essential to finding the right sounds for the album. Karen said, "It's fun to be in there and expressing ourselves. And yeah, sometimes we take it too far in the studio, and the moments that go too far, you don't hear."

Newest inducted members of the Grand Ole Opry, Little Big Town, prepared for a busy release schedule for their sixth studio by wrapping up their mentoring session with good friend Blake Shelton on “The Voice” (10/20, 10/21). They stopped by “Good Morning America” (Oct 21st) for a live performance (album release concert in NYC Best Buy Theater); broadcast live from the iHeart Radio Theatre in New York for iHeart Radio Country Live! (Oct 22nd), “The View” (Oct 23rd), and wrapped up by making a stop on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” (Oct 30th) for an exciting performance with The Roots.
In addition to the heavy TV schedule, Little Big Town will be performing an album release concert in NYC the night of Oct. 21 at the Best Buy Theater
They will launch The Pain Killer Tour on November 8th in Youngstown, OH with openers Brett Eldredge and Brothers Osborne.
I just hope people love it as much as we do," says LBT's Karen Fairchild. "When we started it was a painful process ... I don't know why. It was a good process. It just wasn't as easy as the other one." Fellow member Phillip Sweet agreed. "We had to put in the time and the work and the effort," he said. "It's always good, and it makes you appreciate it on the other side a lot. I'm with her. I just hope people love it and embrace it because I feel really good about it. Winning awards and having commercial success with Tornado, I think, gave us a bigger platform. So we wanted to step up to the challenge and know there’s a great platform here, what are we going to put on it? And we wanted something to stand the test of time." Source Artist News

Critical reception for Little Big Town’s “Pain Killer:

13 Tracks/ Time: 46:19 CD - UK iTunes - Smart Choice Music - Amazon.com

Allmusic (Rating: 4 STARS)....Coming after the sweet, shiny Tornado, the restless over-saturation in Killer is something of a shock. As pure description, the elements sound strictly mainstream: there are gnarled, distorted guitars, flirtations with electronics, thick walloping rhythms, everything that would seemingly amount to a full-fledged arena-country crossover.
Instead of following a predictable pattern, the quartet embarks on a series of detours, seizing each individual track as an opportunity to veer a little further off course..... That mischievousness is intertwined with aural adventure on Pain Killer: there's a sense that the
group members are goading each other on, daring their bandmates to dabble in a bit of reggae ("Pain Killer"), to add a whistle to a chorus ("Day Drinking"), to write a swaying slow dance about a "Girl Crush," or to turn a bit of back-porch picking into a funky stomp ("Stay All Night"). Even though this record settles into a finale of three successive folk-rock tunes -- all three softly gorgeous -- it's the previous series of left-hand tours that gives Pain Killer its kick: this is the rarest thing in contemporary country, a record with an expansive world-view delivered with a kinetic kick and infallible melodies, a record that gives no indication of where it's going upon first listen but remains compelling upon further spins, after all the dazzle dissipates and Little Big Town's craft shines through.

Billboard (Rating: 4 Stars) .... Forget about the first single, the gimmicky "Day Drinking," which peaked at No. 10 on the Country Airplay chart: It's low-hanging fruit and a retread of the group's Grammy Award-winning "Pontoon." Especially in comparison to the depths that await on the rest of Pain Killer. The single is a gateway to ease fans into an album that rarely stops surprising with its lyrical twists and stunning vocal performances by all four members -- Karen Fairchild, Kimberly Schlapman, Jimi Westbrook and Phillip Sweet -- all of whom trade off singing lead. But it's Fairchild who is first among equals here. She wails like a woman scorned on the bitter "Things You Don't Think About" and caresses her notes on the swaying "Girl Crush," a song about crushing
on her lover's mistress and her captivating charms. Aggressively produced by Jay Joyce (Eric Church, Cage the Elephant), who helmed the band's fine 2012 effort, Tornado, Pain Killer is an in-your-face album with rock bombast, though there's enough occasional twang here to keep the country traditionalists happy. It's a tour de force when the music gets loud, but even more so when the quartet, whose members co-wrote eight of the songs here, quiets down and sings together on "Live Forever," a shimmering, understated ode to enduring love. It has taken 16 years to reach this point, but Little Big Town is finally ready for the big time.

Associated Press (Michael McColl) Little Big Town experiment endlessly with harmonies, arrangements, loops and sound effects. The whistles, odd beats and unconventional guitar work that woozily circle through the first single, "Day Drinking," only hint at the shenanigans the singers and their producer Jay Joyce cram into these 13 new songs. Most of it is for the sake of fun — you can hear how gleeful the group is as they test outlandish ideas on such songs as "Quit Breaking Up With Me," ''Good
People," the Lorde-like "Things You Don't Think About" and the title song. But they also show off the beauty of their blended voices on the hushed "Silver and Gold" and the stunning "Live Forever," written by the group with Jeremy Spillman and Ryan Tyndell. The Grammy-winning band only stumbles on "Faster Gun," with its awkward cowboy similes. The rest of the album keeps raising the bar: Little Big Town, from early on, never followed country music formulas. With "Pain Killer," their boldness continues to pay off.

Country Weekly (Rating: B+)....Little Big Town Delivers Medicinal Music With “Pain Killer”......It is, by far, one of their most inventive albums to date, yet it remains true to the things we’ve grown to love about Little Big Town—velvety, lush harmonies, well-thought-out lyrics, thumping up-tempo rockers and tug-at-your-heartstrings ballads. It is Pain Killer. And like an auditory aspirin, it soothes the soul..... Pain Killer elicits material from writers who exist a little beyond the fringe, with three tunes by the wonderful Lori McKenna. One of Lori’s co-writes, “Girl Crush,” is the most intriguing piece on the album, pulling you into the story and then going to a place that you didn’t expect, particularly given the song’s title......All four members are given the chance to shine on solo vocals, with Kimberly especially pleasing on “Good People,” the most country-sounding song on the record...The album gets taken down a notch, however, because of the production, which at times is overly cluttered with layers and instrumentation, almost drowning out the vocals and lyrics. We’re all for being adventurous, but the adventure should be at least intelligible. That said, Pain Killer proves the proper remedy for those suffering from bro-country overdose.

Luke Bryan’s 64-week juggernaut album CRASH MY PARTY sold another 7,365 copies and has now scanned 2.18 million copies to date (over 1.25 million sold in  2013).

Brantley Gilbert’s 23-week old JUST AS I AM has now scanned past the 601K mark at retail selling another 5,327 copies (down 7%)
The Swon Brothers in their second chart frame with their self titled set fell 28-102 on the BB200 (#6 - #19 Country) with sales of 3,425 (down 67%; 2-week total 13,724)

Country/Hip-Hop/Rap artists Jawga Boyz & Dez with WINDSHIELD (Thrash Productions/Inner Pain Music) blew in at No.155 BB200 (#22 Country) selling 2,467 copies.

Billboard Country Airplay Chart Week of November 8, 2014

Jason Aldean with “Burnin’ It Down” (Broken Bow) topped Country Airplay for a second successive week. The song logged 47.249 million audience impressions (-1.414 million; down 3%) and received 7,526 radio plays (-213). This marked the seventh of his 12 leaders to hold more than one week atop the chart. His longest leading run was four weeks with “Big Green Tractor” in September 2009. On the sales/airplay/streaming hybrid Hot Country Songs list, “Burnin’ ” posted a 13th straight week at No. 1 (Nov. 1), the longest command for a song by a solo male artist on the chart since Buck Owens led for 16 weeks with “Love’s Gonna Live Here” beginning in 1963.

  • Maddie & Tae earned the first top 10 by a female duo in nearly eight years on Billboard’s Country Airplay chart as “Girl in a Country Song” (Dot) drew 31.743 million
audience impressions (up 6%) and hopped 11-9 in its 17th chart week. The chart hasn’t had a female duo enter its upper region since The Wreckers scored the second of two top 10s with “My, Oh My” on Jan. 20, 2007. Maddie & Tae’s bro-country-ribbing song is also the first debut single by a new female twosome to reach the top 10 since The Wreckers’ “Leave the Pieces” jumped 11-8 on July 29, 2006, then spent two weeks at No. 1 (Sept. 9-16, 2006). “Girl” has sold 305,000 downloads through the week ending Oct. 19, according to Nielsen SoundScan, and posted its best rank (No.6; 22,173  sales) on the Nov.1 Country Digital Songs chart. It’s the preview track from the duo’s self-titled EP (due Nov. 4), and the first Country Airplay top 10 for the recently relaunched Dot imprint. So many current country hits “have this super-smoking-hot girl. She’s always barefoot on a tailgate dancing in cutoff jeans and a bikini top,” says Maddie Marlow (Tae Dye completes the pair). “We thought it would be fun to come at [it] from how we would feel being in those songs. We want to look good for these boys, but that’s not all we have to offer.”
  • Newcomer RaeLynn snared the Most Increased Audience nod on Country Airplay with “God Made Girls” (Valory), which collected 12.571 million audience impressions, a gain of +5.223 million (up 71%); receiving 2,315 radio plays (+873) and vaulted 32-22 in its 17th week. That’s the highest rank for a solo female artist’s debut single (counting only promoted singles) in eight months on Country Airplay. The last such song to rank as high: Danielle’s Bradbery’s “The Heart of Dixie,” which peaked at No. 12 on the March 1 chart. A second-season contestant on NBC’s The Voice, RaeLynn (real name Racheal Lynn Woodward) also finished the tracking week as the fourth-most-added song.  “Girls” has sold 139,000 downloads (12K sales this week). It debuted and peaked at No.22 on the July 19 Country Digital Songs tally. Why the sudden interest for "God Made Girls"? The single was set to receive the same boost from the program that brought game-changing exposure to Sam Hunt’s soon-to-be #1 “Leave the Night On” and Dustin Lynch’s former #1 “Where it’s At”.  iHeartRadio were poised to work its magic and announced that “God Made Girls,” which was already #34 on Mediabase’s country airplay chart, was the latest selection for its “On the Verge” program. “On the Verge” selections receive a minimum of 150 spins from iHeartMedia’s radio stations within a given genre. “Girls” would therefore receive significant, guaranteed exposure on some of country radio’s largest and most powerful stations. RaeLynn, the 20-year-old Baytown, Texas, native is expected to release her first full-length album before the end of the year.
  • Lady Antebellum with “Freestyle” (Capitol Nashville) claimed the Most Added trophy, with at least seven first-week plays at 32 reporters. The song leapt 55-40 in its second week logging 3.001 million audience impressions (+1.889 million; up 172%) and received  680 radio plays (+414) thanks to 32 fresh radio commitments (ADDS)
  • Billy Currington with “Don’t It” (Mercury) snagged the Hot Shot Debut honour landing at No.53 logging 1.179 million first week audience impressions.
