52nd Academy of Country Music Awards Report
LAS VEGAS, NV (April 2, 2017)
Winners were announced for the 52nd Academy Of Country Music Awards™,
which aired LIVE on Sunday April 2, 2017earlier this evening on the CBS
Television Network from T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, NV.
ACMs Lead CBS-TV To Sunday Night
Ratings Win
Sunday night’s (April 2, 2017) “52nd
Academy Of Country Music Awards” powered CBS-TV
to a ratings win for the evening, garnering a 2.1 rating/7 share among
18-49 year-olds while pulling in 10.85
million total viewers.
This year's numbers were off slightly
from the 2016 ACMs, which notched a 2.3 rating and attracted 11.2 million total
viewers.
The presenters
list included:
Lauren Alaina, Bobby
Bones, Kane Brown, Savannah Chrisley, Todd Chrisley, Kacey Musgraves, Nancy
O’dell, Jake Owen, Kellie Pickler, Darius Rucker, Elliott Sadler, Miss America
Savvy Shields, and Bubba Wallace.
The industry named Jason Aldean as Entertainer
of the Year, the evening’s biggest honor. This is the second consecutive
win for Aldean in this category. Aldean has now snagged 11 ACMs starting with Top
New Male Vocalist (2005).
The country superstar beat out an
impressive roster of the top stars in country music for the award, including
Luke Bryan, Florida Georgia Line, Carrie Underwood and Keith Urban. Eagles
guitarist Joe Walsh presented the
trophy, something Aldean commented on when he took the podium to accept. “One
of the Eagles just gave me an award. That’s probably the coolest thing that’s
ever happened to me” he said. Aldean gushed over the other nominees. “I am so thankful … you guys don’t know how
much I love getting up and doing what I do,” he said. “Everybody in this category, including Luke, one of my best friends in
the world, FGL … Keith, I’ve toured with you, Carrie … I have nothing but
respect for all of you guys, such an amazing group of artists.”

Miranda Lambert won Female Vocalist of the Year for the eighth consecutive year, breaking her own record for consecutive wins in that category and made history when she became the first-ever singer to win the Female Vocalist of the Year gong eight years running.
The 33-year-old songstress has
won the award every year since 2009 and tied for the honour with Reba McEntire
in 2016. This year it was all Miranda though, with the Little Red Wagon star
beating Carrie Underwood, Kacey Musgraves, Kelsea Ballerini and Maren Morris to
be named the winner.
Taking to the stage to accept the
prize, Miranda praised her fellow female country singers making a name for
themselves in the industry, telling the audience: "Thank you so much guys. It really means the world to me. Carrie can sing
me under the table. We've agreed on that! I'm just glad to see females kicking
ass these days. I'm so proud to be a part of that. So cheers to all of us girls
out there dreaming. Thanks fans, thanks ACMs, thanks to my family and
friends... I love you all."
Miranda, who attended the
ceremony at Las Vegas’ T-Mobile Arena with boyfriend Anderson East, also took
home the Album of the Year prize for
her record THE WEIGHT OF THESE WINGS.
She now has 28 ACM Awards to her name beginning with Top New Female Vocalist
(2006).

Thomas Rhett won Male Vocalist of the Year
for the first time.
He was also awarded with Song of the Year for his 3X PLATINUM, six-week chart-topping song “Die a
Happy Man” (co-written with Sean Douglas and Joe Spargur), winning two
trophies in that category as both Artist and Songwriter. Rhett was in utter
disbelief when he heard his name being announced as the winner.
"I don't have a whole lot of words,” said Thomas Rhett. “I didn’t think there was any way they were
really calling my name either time.
Especially for Male Vocalist - everyone in that category shaped the artist that I am. It is the most amazing award that I've ever received in my whole existence."

Thomas Rhett Shocked Over ACM Male & Song of the Year Wins Press Room:
Brothers Osborne won Vocal Duo of the Year. They also previously won New Vocal Duo or Group of the Year Presented by T-Mobile. Up against major competition, brothers John & TJ Osborne pipped fellow nominees Big & Rich, Dan + Shay, Florida Georgia Line and Maddie & Tae to win the ‘Vocal Duo Of The Year’ award, breaking Florida Georgia Line’s three-year streak.
“God bless country music!” exclaimed guitarist John as the pair accepted their award onstage.
“We have the
best seats in the house, I don’t even know how we got invited to sit up front!” joked TJ. “We’re
sitting there the whole time behind Thomas Rhett and he left and I
was like, ‘well there goes our air time’. Anyhow, our parents are here tonight and
we want to thank them because, honestly, they believed in us by the time we
were babies.”
News that they’d won the award for ‘New Vocal Duo Of The Year’ was
announced in March, when the band learnt of their victory whilst onstage at
Dingwalls in London, performing their first ever headline UK show to a sold-out
crowd.
These two wins
follow a memorable year in which the Brothers’ debut album, PAWN
SHOP, and singles ‘21 Summer’ and ‘Stay A Little
Longer’ have enjoyed considerable US success, and now sights are set
on the international market with ‘Pawn Shop’
Maren Morris (despite missing out on the Female Vocalist of the Year prize) and Jon Pardi were also previously announced winners for New Female Vocalist of the Year presented by T-Mobile and New Male Vocalist of the Year Presented by T-Mobile, respectively.
Big Machine superstars Florida Georgia
Line received two ACM Awards (off
camera categories) for Vocal Event of
the Year for “May We All” featuring Tim McGraw and
Single Record of the Year for “H.O.L.Y.” FGL have now bagged 8 ACM
Awards starting with New Vocal Duo or Group of the Year (2012).
ACM CEO Pete Fisher surprised the
duo with these Awards at the ACM Party for a Cause: WME Bash at the Beach event
on Saturday April 1st.
For FGL it was a night where they
saw their three-year win streak as Vocal Duo of the Year broken by Brothers
Osborne, who also won in the New Vocal Duo / Group of the Year category. But,
the two didn’t go home without any awards. Earlier in the weekend, the Big
Machine superstars won Single of the Year for their chart-topping “H.O.L.Y.,”
and also netted the Vocal Event of the Year for “May We All,” their
collaboration with Tim McGraw. Thomas Rhett walked away with the Song of the
Year prize for his romantic ballad “Die A Happy Man,” which he co-wrote with
Sean Douglas and Joe Spargur. He dedicated the song to his wife Lauren, who was
visibly pregnant, citing her as the song’s inspiration.
Little Big Town won the Vocal Group of the Year
award for the third consecutive year, their fourth win in that category overall
in five years. “You give us life,” said the group’s
Karen Fairchild from the stage during their acceptance speech. LBT have now won
eight ACM’s beginning with Top New Vocal Duo or Group (2006).
“Forever Country” received Video of the Year Presented by XFINITY and was awarded to producers Nathan de la Rionda, Jil Hardin, Charleen Manca, Joanna Carter, Chandra LaPlume, Sarah Trahern, Damon Whiteside and Director Joseph Kahn.
The ACM bestowed, the CMA, the
official recipient of the trophy — turned the focus away from the two
organizations and placed it on the 31 artists who took part in the production.
A bundle of those acts, who participated collectively under the banner Artists
of Then, Now & Forever, hit the stage along with the director and
producers. And LBT’s Karen Fairchild, a CMA board member, gave the acceptance
speech. “We’re so happy to celebrate
country music,” she said. “What a
rich heritage we have.”
Lori McKenna Wins Songwriter Of The Year at The
52nd Academy Of Country Music Awards
Lori McKenna made history this weekend winning Songwriter of the Year at the 52nd
Academy of Country Music Awards. This is the first time a woman has ever been
honoured with the award.
The accolade culminates a series
of breakthrough years for the critically praised singer, songwriter and
performer, who won Best Country Song for her solo-penned, No.1 hit “Humble
& Kind” (Tim McGraw) at the 59th
Annual Grammy Awards. This is the second consecutive year she has won the
award following last year’s win for “Girl Crush” (co-written with Liz
Rose and Hillary Lindsey).
She is the first songwriter to win back-to-back
awards in the category since Shania Twain in 1999-2000. Moreover, McKenna also
won Song of the Year at The 50th Annual CMA Awards. She is the first songwriter
to win the award in consecutive years since Vince Gill (1991-1993) and is the
first female songwriter to win back-to-back nods in the history of the CMAs.
McKenna is also the first solo songwriter to win the award since 2011.
2017 ACM Awards: Surprises and

Extract: Among the biggest surprises was Thomas Rhett’s win in the Male
Vocalist of the Year category. Though nobody is doubting Rhett’s success or his
ability, this was the first major award that Chris Stapleton has been nominated for the past few award show
cycles that his name wasn’t called as winner. Another shock was Florida Georgia Line seeing their Vocal
Duo win streak be ended by Brothers Osborne. That’s not a reflection on either
act, but FGL was one of the most-nominated artists this year, and before the
night had ever started, the two had won a pair of trophies: Single of the Year
and Vocal Event of the Year.
One name that I have to say that I was surprised by
in his omission during the evening was Keith
Urban. His Ripcord album was one of the most musically-adventurous that he
has ever recorded, and “Blue Ain’t Your Color” deservedly became one of his
biggest hit records ever. What about
Carrie Underwood? While the newest member of the Capitol Records Nashville
roster has won a pair of Entertainer of the Year awards from the ACM in the
past, her not receiving a single Entertainer prize from either the ACM or the
CMA is an omission that should not have taken place

Miranda Lambert took the stage by herself at the 2017 ACM Awards, giving an understated but very bold acoustically debut performance of “Tin Man,” one of the songs from her Album of the Year-nominated album The Weight of These Wings.

The 2017 ACM Awards -- were
stuffed full of A-list performances from veterans and newcomers. And while
standalone sets from Miranda Lambert and Lady Antebellum made huge impressions,
collaborations got the most attention throughout the CBS telecast -- and
deservedly so. From a tribute to Chuck Berry to the jaw-dropping Florida
Georgia Line/Backstreet Boys pairing, here are the 2017 ACM Awards performances
ranked from worst to best.

23. Jon Pardi
It's no slur on Jon Pardi that
he's at the bottom of this list -- while "Dirt On My Boots" is
an excellent song and he did it well, the abbreviated version he was permitted
to perform at the ACM Awards prevents his performance from getting much higher
on this list.
3. Tim McGraw and Faith Hill
The A-list country couple
delivered the first TV performance of their duet "Speak to a Girl,"
starting the song from different ends of the stage before meeting in the
middle, bathed in golden light. They both poured their pipes into the duet, and
when Hill jumped into McGraw's arms at the end, it seemed so genuine you almost
felt like a voyeur for watching their intimate moment together.
2. Miranda Lambert
Miranda Lambert's breakup ballad
"Tin Man" was a show-stopping standout of the 2017 ACMs.
Even though it's (presumably) inspired by her high profile breakup, she didn't
need the gossip backstory to command the stage: Her stage presence and
affecting lyrics brought the busy night to a full halt while she sang.
1. Florida Georgia Line & Backstreet Boys
The country duo and the veteran
boy band had previously collaborated on the harmonious "God,
Your Mama and Me" on wax, so it was no surprise (although a total
delight) when they performed it together to close the 2017 ACM Awards. It was,
however, a real treat when they segued into BSB's "Everybody (Backstreet's
Back)" and all seven entertainers performed some of the original video's
choreography. Cynics might call it out for being a blatant bid for social media
buzz -- at least, until they watch it. Once you witness the seamless musicality
and sheer joy of the performance, it's impossible not to be sold.
