ABOUT Russell Hill's Country Music Show (Facebook Page; broadcast on Express FM “Passionately Portsmouth” every SUNDAY 12pm-3pm | Express FM: Website; Eldon Building, Winston Churchill Avenue PO1 2DJ Portsmouth)
A freelance writer and host of "Russell Hill's Country Music Show":

Russell Hill & Sarah Darling
Russell first joined Express FM in 2010 and he took over hosting the show the following year. Portsmouth has a pretty damn amazing music scene and our regular live sessions aim to show the world how great it is. The motto of the show is ‘if it sounds good, it’s on’ and Russell is always looking for new artists that can be featured on the show.
Live sessions are at the core of the show – to date, more than 200 bands and artists have played live in the Express FM studio [including The Shires + Lonnie Donegan’s son Peter Donegan] and numerous artists from Portsmouth, such as Bemis, Lily Garland, Marley Blandford, Dicey Riley, Waif & Stray and The Machete to name but a few. Artists from further afield (such as Nashville, Los Angeles and Australia) have also been in session.

There are regular features on the show, such as the Gig Guide which profiles events that are happening in Portsmouth. Not forgetting our classic country tracks and the latest tunes from around the world.
The show features a “You Pick Chip” slot where a listener and fans of the Nashville TV drama (#Nashies) request a track by Charles Esten (Aka Deacon Claybourne) by contacting the show or using the Twitter Hashtag #YouPickChip.

FESTIVAL HOST: Lily Garland
SOCIALS

The Hampshire native captured the attention of the UK Country scene with her “very accomplished sound” (Desperately Lost City) in 2016 with her debut EP TIME TO FLY. Nominated for EP of the year by Belles and Gals it was described as “fantastic, with one of the best songs you’ll hear this year (Belles and Gals).
Portsmouth country singer/songwriter Lily Garland’s 5-track debut EP TIME TO FLY was self-released Nov 18, 2016 (Amazon UK | UK iTunes; Focus tracks "Tonight" and "Time To Fly"). Lily launched 'Time to Fly' at the Rifle Club in Portsmouth with special guests Jack Francis, The Paper Trains and DJ Russell Hill from Express FM.
She was given an "amazing opportunity" to go to Liverpool and record the EP with go-to UK country producer Justin Johnson who has produced numerous UK Country music artists (Raintown, Narn, Blue Genes, Samantha Lloyd, Sam Hollyman, Mike Ward, Angie King,  Acoustic Journey, Thorne Hill, Dahlia, Jade Helliwell, Darcy, Southern Junction, Hollie Barrie (from The Voice UK), Emma Moore, Kira Mac and Jeannine Barry).

Her highly anticipated follow up EP,  The Next Chapter (Amazon UK - UK iTunes - Amazon.com ) was self-released on June 16, 2017 and did not disappoint. Lily sings with a voice which soars like Lucie Silvas, showing a technique reminiscent of her heroines in the Dixie Chicks (wrote Your Life in a Song). The EP debuted at #45 and reached No.5 in the UK Country iTunes Chart (#139 UK iTunes all-genres peak) and held its own for a few days alongside the likes of Lady Antebellum and Shania Twain and Zac Brown Band. On Sunday June 18 it was placed at #28 (#976 UK iTunes all-genres).

Later in 2018 Lily's debut single “I'm Coming For You” (writers Lily Garland, Justin Johnson, Adam Sweet) from 'The Next Chapter' was nominated for the UKCountryRadio.com Listeners Club Song award in the UK Country Music Awards.

CHART SUCCESS: I’m Coming Home was promoted on Hotdisc June 2017 #222 promotional disc. It made a debut at No.15 on the Hotdisc Top 40 chart (

There is little doubt that Lily Garland is a rising force on the UK country scene. Her first EP was simply brilliant, but it is more than clear that Lily has raised her game. ‘The Next Chapter’ sees Lily with a range of songs and a confidence of delivery that will surely take her to the next level” Nick Cantwell, Belles and Gals

With his 5-piece band, Elliott's presence creates an energy that flows from the stage as performers and audience alike go on a captivating journey, led by foot stomping country guitar licks, soaring Irish fiddle melodies, and soulful rock vocals.
With an air of Celtic inspiration, his brand-new EP entitled WILD ATLANTIC HEART is a soundtrack of enriched stories and nothing but pure, honest writing of travel, life and love.

Gasoline & Matches (Website)
“Promising big things for 2018” – Louise Brierley, BBC Introducing
Starting 2018 their debut single ‘Fool’s Gold’ (released Jan 15, 2018 iTunes) apparently topped the UK iTunes Country Chart, a headlining performance at The Hard Rock Café London, a five date Californian tour in the bag, proved why they were named as Lyrics Magazine’sArtists to Watch’ in 2018. Sally Rea Morris and Steve Marks deliver a unique blend of Fleetwood Mac-esque harmonies, Brad Paisley-infused guitar solos and energetic live performances.

The duo initially met through their mutual love of country music back in 2011 when their paths first crossed in a guitar shop in Birmingham. Shortly after meeting, Sally was due to move to America, so they decided to write, record and perform just a handful of shows together before she left. The undeniable chemistry both on stage and in the studio was a sure sign this would likely be just the start of their journey but an ocean apart, their story was put on hold. Upon Sally’s return in 2015, it was a matter of weeks before the duo reconnected and formed Gasoline & Matches. The more recent addition of Jamie Clayton on bass, Ben Marshall on keys & banjo and James 'Beef' Randall on drums for their studio & live performances allowed the band’s sound to develop and really start bringing the songs alive.
They have made appearances at two of the UK’s premier country festivals, Buckle & Boots and FSA Fest, and received a British Country Music Association nomination for Duo Of The Year 2017.
They have hosted the 'Nashville Sounds In The Round' events held at the Kitchen Garden Café in Birmingham.
On March 19, 2018 their single “If You Wanna Stay” (iTunes) made a #3 peak on UK Country iTunes Singles Chart
Their latest single “Tequila’s a Healer” dropped on Christmas Eve Dec 24, 2018 and appeared at #115 on UK Country iTunes.

Hannah Anders USA (Website)
Blurb: With an artist like you don't become a fan over time, you become a fan in a heartbeat. The powerhouse vocalist can bring an audience to its feet, while making you feel like she’s singing directly to you from the stage.
Hannah Anders

Hannah Anders takes Country from your grandpa’s front porch soundtrack and turns it into your daughter’s backwoods anthem— like putting fresh strings on a vintage guitar and revving a new engine in a classic car.

The sweetheart-rocker soothes a slow burn with a shot of whiskey, giving Country music a jumpstart that sparks a sound all its own.

Hannah Anders was interviewed in Nashville at CRS2019 by Christian Lamitschka for Country Music News International Magazine & Radio Show:

This past year, Hannah clinched the Los Angeles Akademia Award for Best Country/Rock Song with her rip-roaring anthem, Turn It Up. This same song was also nominated by LOZ Radio for Song Of The Year, and held the number one spot through the month of April on Australia’s Power FM Station.
Hannah’s songwriting kudos were also recognized by the world famous Dodge Ram Truck Company, who commissioned her to write the theme song for their newest ad campaign in Atlanta, GA.
Hannah Anders has conquered crowds from coast to coast and overseas, touring the UK and Ireland as the headliner of the Rednecks and Rhinestones Festival, in addition to sharing stages with the likes of LoCash, Billy Currington, and Keith Anderson. From Summerfest, the World’s Largest Music Festival, to Music City’s CMA Fest, putting on a legendary show has become second nature for Hannah Anders.

Morganway (Website)
A six-piece from East Anglia founded by twin brothers Callum (vocals, guitar, bass) and Kieran Morgan (lead guitar, backing vocals).
Throughout their early years the boys played in various bands but struggled to find a box to fit into. Too rock for folk, too pop for indie, too indie for country, or so it seemed. Choosing to follow their instincts rather than convention, they became Morganway and suddenly people started listening.
Joined by SJ Mortimer (vocals), Nicole Terry (fiddle), Matthew Brocklehurst (keys) and Ed Bullinger (drums), the band has developed a sound built on a love for multi-layered vocal harmonies, driven guitar riffs and distinctive fiddle flourishes, bound by raw, honest songwriting.
They've built this into a live show that in one moment is classic rock and the next mystical folk, catching the attention of Whispering Bob Harris and many others in the rising British Americana scene.
Their collective obsession with ‘70s West Coast rock is also met with a love of Brit Rock, folk and modern Americana.

Pheonix Morey (Website)
A Portsmouth native started playing guitar some 10 years ago. But his world changed the first time he heard Kris Kristofferson singing out on ‘Me and Bobby McGee’.
The story and the visions it painted in his head came together like watching an artist paint on canvas. Phoenix was hooked.
So about 5 years ago he started taking pen to paper and trying to tell his own stories, his own little moments in time transformed into song. Phoenix relived painful memories, fun times, lost loves and much more as he tried to paint the same pictures in your mind as Kris did for him all those years ago.
Phoenix Morby's debut EP was released on April 12th, 2018 and is 5 years of finding and reliving the best and worst stories from his life.

The Hard Way Home

Two Ways Home

Winters Hill (Facebook)
Has grown way beyond what was expected. With Jack Holmàr on lead guitar, harmonica and steel slide, Max Hoar on rhythm guitar and lead vocals, and Nimrod Taabu on percussion, the band have crafted a distinguished alternative to the traditional Americana sound.
Before ever playing in front of a single person, interest had begun from local radio as the band crafted their unique sound in Jacks’ loft. The trio played an acoustic session on Voice FM as their first ever live performance, and popularity has been rapidly growing ever since.
Combining elements of Folk, Country and Rock, Winters Hill have a certain nostalgia and romance to their music. With catchy choruses wrapped in melodic guitar riffs, Winters Hill have been influenced by a vast range of musicians from both past and present; from Dylan to Young, Springsteen to Tom Waits, and Kenyan born Nimrods’ drumming style on the Cajon is something not to be missed.
Within the first year of Winters Hill forming, they were playing at the London 02 arena for Country 2 Country, a spot well deserved from by the boys.
Winters Hills’ song writing style tells a story which is relatable to every listener; songs of good times and past times. Support from BBC Introducing, national radio sessions and joining bands on tour such as Brother and Bones, The Treetop Flyers, and Ben Caplan are creating a loyal fan base for the trio.
Two-time Isle of Wight Festival favourites Winters Hill, are set to embark on this year’s festival season with new original songs and a brand new setup.
Fresh from being invited by Gabrielle Aplin’s record label, Never Fade Records, and supporting Aplin herself to play the labels debut showcase night, Winters Hill are fast becoming the name all Americana fans are talking about.
