2022 In
Review: Country Looks To The Future With One Eye On The Past
From
its very infancy, one of the attractions of country music has been its respect
for the past. Many of the genre’s early pioneers, including Jimmie Rodgers
and The Carter Family, made their mark by leaning on so-called
“old-fashioned songs,” nostalgic material drawn from a simpler time, before the
mass migration to the city, before the Model T destroyed the horse and buggy,
and before racy, decadent jazz had reached its peak.
Of
course, music is an art, and artists tend to experiment, so the ongoing major
battle in country music is the push and pull between expanding boundaries and
hanging on to tradition. Appropriately in 2022 — which happened to mark the
100thanniversary of the first country recording session — that tug of war
between progress and tradition was very much evident. Musically, the sounds of
the past were trendy as the current generation of hit-makers celebrates ’90s
country.
The
genre was full of examples, including three of the top10 songs on the yearend
Country Airplay chart: the Garth Brooks-like drama of Cody Johnson’s “ ’Til
You Can’t,” the heartbreak storyline filtered through a Texas troubadour in
Scotty McCreery’s “Damn Strait” and the Cole Swindell
megahit “She Had Me at Heads Carolina,” which returned the melody
of Jo Dee Messina’s debut to regular rotation over two decades after its
original chart run.
The
rise of ronky tonk — a raw, stripped-down form of country (maybe it should be
spelled “rawnky tonk”?) — pushed back against the genre’s 10-year party mode
while sounding a little more like country has historically presented itself. It
brought a new round of young artists to the forefront, including Bailey
Zimmerman, Zach Bryan, Jackson Dean and Nate Smith.
And it took place as the P a r a m o u n t + s e r i e s Yellowstone soared ,
resurrecting the once popular western format and adding to the luster of Lainey
Wilson, a new artist whose country authenticity fits with her role in the
show. Yet even as country recycled its past, the format is clearly moving
forward at the same time. The ubiquitous presence of Jimmie Allen, the
multiple collaborations of BRELAND, Kane Brown’s experiment with
stadium headlining and the introduction of new talents — including Madeline
Edwards, Tiera Kennedy, Brittany Spencer, The War and
Treaty and Chapel Hart — underscores a very real interest in
expanding the genre’s diversity, with Black and biracial women making greater
inroads alongside the recent uptick in the format’s Black males.
The Academy of Country Music became the first major organization to shift its awards show from
network TV to a streaming platform, and Viacom shifted the CMT Music
Awards for the first time from cable to the CBS broadcast network,
revising the schedule in the process as the CMTs moved from the week of CMA Fest
to the spring.
By summer, the new routine left much of the industry’s personnel worn
out as they returned to a hyper-active calendar after two years of mostly
working at home. Reigning over it all was Morgan Wallen, whose

dynamited the previous chart record by extending his No.1 status on
Country Albums to 86weeks. Despite not fully cleaning up his public image
after uttering a racial slur in February 2020, he topped nine different
country lists among Billboard’s year-end charts, snared a CMA nomination
for entertainer of the year, had the RIAA certify 43 different titles during
the calendar year and set a 2023 concert schedule that includes 17 stadiums.
Wallen’s DANGEROUS set is the No. 1 Top Country Albums title of 2022.
The 30-track LP has led the weekly albums list for well over 80 frames. On
April 2, when it rolled into its record-breaking 51st week, it made history as
it surpassed the 50-week commands logged by Luke Combs’ This One’s For You and
Shania Twain’s Come on Over.
Notably, the methodology for Top Country Albums changed as of the survey
dated Feb. 11, 2017, when the chart switched from using a strictly album
sales-based formula to one calculating multiple metrics, incorporating album
sales, track equivalent albums (TEA), and streaming equivalent albums (SEA).
Thus, the steady streaming activity of Dangerous’ 30 songs has contributed to
the set’s chart rank each week during its run.
Dangerous blasted in at No. 1 on the Top Country Albums chart dated Jan.
23, 2021, with 265,000 equivalent album units earned. That marked the biggest
week for a country album since Carrie Underwood’s Cry Pretty launched with
266,000 in September 2018. Wallen achieved the largest week for a solo male
since Luke Bryan’s Kill the Lights began with 345,000 (August 2015).
Wallen also possesses the No. 1 and 2 hits of 2022 on Billboard’s
streaming-, airplay and sales based Hot Country Songs. “Wasted on You,”
which is from Dangerous, is the leading song of the year, while stand-alone
single “You Proof” is No. 2.
Underwood Shines: Billboard’s Top Female Country Artist of 2022
is Carrie Underwood. She ranks 10th overall.
Underwood’s Denim & Rhinestones LP
entered Top Country Albums at No. 2 on the chart dated June 25, marking her
10th top 10 in as many visits. Released June 10, the set earned 31,000
equivalent album units in its first week, with 22,000 of that sum in album
sales, according to Luminate.
Underwood is the second-highest ranking woman on
the Top Country Albums Artists recap
(Taylor Swift is first) and Underwood is seventh among all artists.
Billboard’s Top Country Duo/Group of 2022
is Zac Brown Band. The act ranks first among duos and groups on the
year-end Top Country Albums Artists recap, and 15th overall.
At the end of October 2021, ZBB released its
seventh studio LP The Comeback which arrived at No. 3 on the
weekly Top Country Albums chart with 19,000 units in its first week. It was the
band’s 10th top 10.
Over on Country Airplay, ZBB achieved its first No.
1 in over five years when “Same Boat” (from The Comeback set),
floated from 4-1 on the tally dated Dec. 4, 2021. It awarded the act with its
14th No. 1.
Billboard’s Top New Country Artist of 2022
is Zach Bryan who finished fifth on the overall Top Country
Artists recap.
Bryan is also fifth on the Top Country Albums
Artists roundup this year. Bryan’s American Heartbreak album
ranks eighth on the year-end Top Country Albums titles list. The 26-year-old
singer-songwriter from Oologah, Okla. released the hefty 34-track effort on May
20 and it entered atop the June 4 dated chart with 71,000 equivalent album
units. Concurrently it bowed at No. 5 on the all-genre Billboard 200.
Also noteworthy for 2022, the group Parmalee’s
“Take My Name” is No. 1 on the year-end Country Airplay Songs tally.
The song led the survey for two weeks starting June 18. It gave the group its
third No. 1, plus it remained in the top 10 for 21 weeks; the fourth longest
run in the list’s upper tier in the almost 23-year history of the chart.

Charted on the Billboard Country Chart?
Known as TEA (track
equivalent album) and SEA (streaming equivalent album) when originally
implemented, 10 song sales or 1,500 song streams from an album were treated
as equivalent to one purchase of the album. Billboard continues to publish a
pure album sales chart, called Top Album Sales, that maintains the traditional
Billboard 200 methodology, based exclusively on Nielsen SoundScan's sales data.
In July 2018, Billboard and
Nielsen revised the ratios used for streaming equivalent album units to account
for the relative value of streams on paid music services like Apple Music or
Amazon Music Unlimited versus ad-supported music and video platforms such as
Spotify's free tier and YouTube. Under the updated album equivalent ratios,
1,250 premium audio streams, 3,750 ad-supported streams, or 3,750 video
streams are equal to one album unit.

artists, 1 billion YouTube video streams on an official music video
generates about $2.6 million globally (Billboard estimates that rate at

February 6 – Tyler Hubbard and
Brian Kelley of
Florida Georgia Line announce they are "taking a break" from
recording music together and will be in an indefinite hiatus from touring after
several 2022 shows while they pursue solo careers.
April 7 – Stevie Woodward takes
over as lead singer of Runaway June, replacing Naomi Cooke who
left two months prior.
April 10 – Tanya Tucker celebrates
the 50th anniversary of her first single, "Delta Dawn", with an
all-star concert at the Ryman Auditorium. Guests included Brenda Lee, T. Graham
Brown, Delbert McClinton, Paul Overstreet, Jessi Colter, LeAnn Rimes, Ty

May 19 – Wynonna Judd announced
an all-star female lineup of artists to accompany her on The Judds' final

After a two-year absence due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the CMA Music Festival returns

July 19 – Chapel Hart, a

August 29 – Kelsea Ballerini announced
that she has filed for divorce from Morgan Evans after nearly five years of

October 6 – Garth
Brooks surprises Ashley McBryde with an invitation to become the newest Grand Ole

Several country artists welcomed children in 2022, including Holly Williams, Randy Houser, Jake Hoot, Gabby Barrett, Chris Lane, who expanded their family’s, while Scotty McCreery, Niko Moon, Luke Combs, Sam Hunt, Chase Wright, Runaway June’s Jennifer Wayne and Maddie & Tae’s Taylor Dye became first-time parents.
UKs Crissie Rhodes from The Shires announced the birth of her twin daughters. The singer took to Instagram to tell fans the girls have arrived and are "happy and healthy" – and also revealed their names, too. "Welcome to the world, our beautiful twin girlies Evelyn & Ada," the 33-year-old wrote on
Instagram. "(Evelyn on the left, Ada on the right)." Crissie and partner Ryan welcomed their daughters on September 23rd, 2022.
In addition to welcoming children this year, several country stars also announced that they are expecting.
