Billboard Top 200 / Country Album Chart News (Chart issue week of September 1, 2018)

The Billboard 200 chart measures multi-metric album consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA).

Ariana Grande Earns Third No. 1 Album on Billboard 200 Chart With 'Sweetener'
Plus: Cole Swindell’s “All of It” and the “Young Stoner Life: Slime Language” compilation debut in the top 10.

Ariana Grande earned her third No. 1 album on the Billboard Top 200 Album Chart (BB200), as her fourth full-length studio effort, SWEETENER, entered atop the tally. The set, which was released on Aug. 17 via Republic Records, started with 231,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending Aug. 23, according to Nielsen Music. Of that sum, 127,000 were from traditional album sales.
Grande’s Third No. 1: Sweetener is Grande’s third leader on the Billboard 200, following the chart-topping debuts of her second album, My Everything (Sept. 13, 2014), and her debut effort, Yours Truly (Sept. 21, 2013). Of her four full-length studio sets, only her third release, Dangerous Woman, missed the top. It debuted and peaked at No. 2 on June 11, 2016 (stuck behind Grande’s labelmate, Drake, with his blockbuster album Views, which was in its fourth of 14 non-consecutive weeks at No. 1).

Aretha Franklin’s 30 Greatest Hits climbs 7-6, granting the diva her highest-charting album in 50 years. 30 Greatest Hits ascends with 52,000 units earned in the tracking week (up 49 percent), with 18,000 of that sum coming from traditional album sales (up 47 percent).
One step below Franklin on the new chart was Cole Swindell with ALL OF IT, which debuted at No.7 with 50,000 units (39,000 in traditional album sales). It marked the country singer’s third top 10 effort, following YOU SHOULD BE HERE (No. 6; May 28, 2016) and his SELF-TITLED DEBUT (No. 3; March 8, 2014).

Billboard Top Country Albums (Chart issue week of September 1, 2018)
Top Country Albums now ranks the most popular country albums of the week, as compiled by Nielsen Music, based on multi-metric consumption (blending traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA), and streaming equivalent albums (SEA)).
10 digital track sales from an album = 1 track equivalent album (TEA) “sale”
1,500 on demand song streams from an album to one streaming equivalent album (SEA) “sale”.
Nielsen Music compiles the sales and streaming data. Billboard continues to publish pure album sales charts (subscription to billboard biz ), exclusively comprising Nielsen’s sales data.

Cole Swindell's 'All Of It' Is #1 Country Album
Cole Swindell with new album ALL OF IT (Warner Bros./Warner Music Nashville) became his first No.1 (among five top 10s) on Billboard’s Top Country Albums chart (dated Sept. 1) as it bowed at the summit. In its first week (ending Aug. 23), All of It earns 50,000 equivalent album units, according to Nielsen Music. Of that sum, 39,000 were in traditional album sales.

Michael Carter produced ALL OF IT.

Swindell co-wrote five of the 12 songs featured on his third album, including “Love You Too Late,” “I’ll Be Your Small Town” and “The Ones Who Got Me Here.” The lead single “Break Up In The End” is his ninth single and was written by Jon Nite, Chase McGill and Jessie Jo Dillon.

“We’ve poured so much into making this album, and to find out that’s its debuting at No. 1 is something a little extra special,”
Swindell told Billboard. “I’m just a little taken back that it actually happened. I’m so thankful for the writers who trusted me with their songs and continue to be blown away by the fans that show up each night and support this music.”

CHART HISTORY
The No.1 start on Top Country Albums for All of It follows Swindell’s YOU SHOULD BE HERE, which debuted at No.2 on Top Country Albums with a career-best 65,353 sold on the chart dated May, 28, 2016.
His self-titled debut also opened at No. 2 in 2014 with sales of 63,247 (Chart week dated March 8, 2014). Swindell's single, "Chillin' It," hit No.1 on the Hot Country Songs chart a week previous.

Swindell has also released three Down Home Sessions EPs. The first instalment arrived at No.8 on Dec. 6, 2014 (12,000 sales), followed by DOWN HOME SESSIONS II (No.11 Country & #43 Billboard 200, Nov. 28, 2015; debut 10,322 copies) and DOWN HOME SESSIONS III (No.5 Country & #36 Billboard 200, Nov. 19, 2016; debut 10,708 copies).
Meanwhile, All of It’s launch single, “Break Up in the End,” lifts 15-10 for a new peak on Billboard’s hybrid Hot Country Songs chart, which blends airplay streaming and sales. It marks Swindell’s eighth top 10. On Country Airplay, it pushes 14-12, climbing to a new high as it hikes by 17 percent to 21.8 million audience impressions in the tracking week ending Aug. 26.

Critical reception for Cole Swindell's All Of It:
12 Tracks/Time: 40:58 Amazon UK - UK iTunes - Amazon.com
AllMusic: As both a songwriter and singer, Cole Swindell played no small part in popularizing the party-hearty sound of bro-country in the early 2000s, but there comes a time when every man must slow his roll. For Swindell, that time is his third album, All of It. Deliberately heavy on ballads.... Swindell's heart belongs to the sounds of the first half of the decade. This retro bent, combined with the concentration on slow tunes, means All of It winds up agreeably sleepy, the kind of record that dissipates as soon as it's finished playing.

Jason Aldean’s Drowns the Whiskey,” featuring Miranda Lambert (Macon/Broken Bow), held atop Country Airplay for a second frame as it increases by 8 percent to 41.7 million audience impressions. On Hot Country Songs, it rose 6-3 for its new peak and claimed the week's leading position on the Mediabase/Country Aircheck singles chart with his 21st career No.1.

“Whiskey,” which is Aldean’s 19th Country Airplay No.1, is his second single from the REARVIEW TOWN LP following “You Make it Easy,” which led for two weeks beginning May 5. It’s his ninth multiweek Country Airplay leader. “Big Green Tractor,” which led for four weeks starting Sept. 5, 2009, is his longest.
For Lambert, “Whiskey” marks her fifth Country Airplay No. 1 and the second to reign for more than one week. Her first multiweek No.1, “The House That Built Me,” was also her first Country Airplay leader. It ruled for four weeks beginning June 12, 2009.
Written by Brandon Kinney, Jeff Middleton and Josh Thompson, “Drowns the Whiskey” is saturated in well-worn emotions and "harkens back to songs by country legends that explored turning to vices in an attempt to stomp out a heartache" (Wide Open Country). "In true Aldean fashion, he looks at different sides of the small-town experience" (Rolling Stone) as the No. One hit "does not stray far from what he’s been doing so successfully for more than a decade" (Kansas City Star).

Russel Dickerson with “Blue Tacoma” (Triple Tigers) reached the Country Airplay top 10 as it increased 22 percent to 25.9 million impressions and bumped 13-10.
“Blue” is Dickerson’s second consecutive Country Airplay top 10, following his debut single, “Yours,” which led Country Airplay for two weeks starting Jan. 27.

Billboard Country Digital Singles Chart
(Chart issue week of September 1, 2018)

Florida Georgia Line with their No1 “Simple” (BMLG) moved 2-1 (#12-16 Digital Songs) to return to the top for 9th non-consecutive week.
It was 15 places behind Cardi B, Bad Bunny and J Balvin's former No. 1 hit "I Like It" which held at No. 3 on the Hot 100, while it topped the Digital Song Sales chart for the first time, in its 20th chart week. The collaboration moved 32,000 downloads in the week, a 4 percent dip. With “Like” needing 20 weeks to top Digital Song Sales, it claims the sixth-longest wait to the summit since the chart began in 2004. Only The All-American Rejects’ “Dirty Little Secret,” (26 weeks, reaching No. 1 in 2006), Train’s “Hey Soul Sister” (25, 2010), The Fray’s “How to Save a Life” (25, 2006), Lady Gaga’s “Just Dance,” featuring Colby O’Donis (24, 2009) and Adele’s “Set Fire to The Rain” (23, 2012) required more time to ascend to No. 1.

Billboard Top 200 / Country Album Chart News (Chart issue week of August 25, 2018)

The Billboard 200 chart measures multi-metric album consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA).

Travis Scott's 'Astroworld' Spends Second Week at No. 1 on Billboard 200 Albums Chart
Aretha Franklin re-enters at No. 7.

Travis Scott’s Astroworld notched a second week at No. 1 on the Billboard Top 200 Albums Chart (BB200), as the set earned 205,000 equivalent album units in the week ending Aug. 16 (down 62 percent), according to Nielsen Music. Of that sum, 78,442 were from traditional album sales (down 71 percent).

Aretha Franklin’s 30 GREATEST HITS jumped back onto the chart, as it re-entered at No.7 with 35,000 units (with 13,000 of that sum in album sales) following Franklin’s death on Aug. 16. The Hits package was up 13,048 percent in units earned, while the album’s sales soared 12,693 percent. The album’s surge came largely from one day of reaction to Franklin’s passing, as she died on the final day of the tracking week. Expect further gains in the next week with a first full chart tracking frame after her death.
30 Greatest Hits is Franklin’s highest charting album since 1972, when her landmark gospel release AMAZING GRACE peaked at No.7 on the July 22, 1972-dated tally. All told, 30 Greatest Hits is Franklin’s seventh top 10 effort on the Billboard 200, and first since AMAZING. Franklin has gone as high as No. 2, twice, with I NEVER LOVED A MAN THE WAY I LOVE YOU (1967) and ARETHA: LADY SOUL (1968).

30 Greatest Hits was released in 1985, but didn’t chart until 2012, when it spent two weeks on the list (then-peaking at No. 117).

Jason Aldean with “Drowns the Whiskey,” featuring Miranda Lambert (Macon/Broken Bow), ascended 3-1 in its 15th week on Billboard’s Country Airplay chart (dated Aug. 25). It rose 9 percent to 38.6 million audience impressions in the tracking week ending Aug. 19, according to Nielsen Music.

On the Hot Country Songs chart, “Whiskey” lifted 7-6, reaching a new peak.
“I’ve always loved this song,” Aldean told Billboard. “It was really a cool moment for me when Miranda agreed to sing on it in the first place, so for it to become a single and then to go No.1 is really special.”
As the traditional-leaning song — written by Josh Thompson, Brandon Kinney and Jeff Middleton — reaches the Country Airplay penthouse, Aldean earned his 19th No.1, tying him for ninth place with Garth Brooks, Luke Bryan and Brad Paisley for the most leaders since the chart launched in 1990. Kenny Chesney leads with 30 No.1s.
“Whiskey” is the second single from Aldean’s album Rearview Town, which debuted atop the all-genre Billboard 200 and Top Country Albums charts dated April 28 with 183,000 equivalent album units. First single “You Make It Easy” led Country Airplay for two weeks beginning May 5.
Aldean first ruled Country Airplay with his second entry (of 35 to date), “Why,” on May 27, 2006. The song followed his debut hit, “Hicktown,” which became his first of 28 top 10s, reaching No. 10 in October 2005.
Lambert lands her fifth Country Airplay No.1 among 12 top 10s and 30 chart appearances. She last led on Dec. 7, 2013, with her Keith Urban duet “We Were Us.” She first appeared on the chart with “Me and Charlie Talking,” which peaked at No. 27 in March 2005, first visited the top 10 with “Gunpowder and Lead” (No. 7, August 2008) and first reigned with “The House That Built Me” (four weeks in 2010, her longest-leading No. 1).

Dylan Scott with “Hooked” (Curb) reached the Country Airplay top 10 in its record-setting 51st week (11-8), increasing 8 percent to 29.2 million audience impressions.
The single’s top 10 trip surpassed two tracks that each took 50 weeks to enter the tier: Easton Corbin’s “A Girl Like You” rose 11-10 in its 50th week on Jan. 13 (and peaked at No.6 on Feb. 17), and Aaron Watson’s “Outta Style” lifted 11-10 (its peak) in its 50th frame on Dec. 30, 2017.

In its 21st week, Maren Morris with “Rich” lifted 33-32 on Hot Country Songs, returning to the peak that it first reached on May 5. It becomes Morris’ fifth top 20 hit on Country Airplay, rising 22-19 (12.7 million in audience, up 16 percent).
