exclusively premiered a beautiful new video for her song ‘Kindness Of
Strangers’ with GQ Magazine, who described
the video as "Directed with the help of her film buff friends, Andrews
tells us that the video for "Kindness of Strangers" uses a 35mm lens
and is shot on a super 8 film, admitting that she has “always really loved that
aesthetic”. By staying away from strict story structure, the video captures
Andrews as an ethereal figure in a set of passing images, using gentle lighting
and double exposure it creates a different and tastefully abstract music
video."
Discussing the poignant song, Courtney stated, ““Kindness of
Strangers” was written directly after some legendary musicians took their own life.
It sparked this long and deep thought about how we all feel disconnected
with each other at some point in our lives. When you’re at your lowest of lows,
even a friendly cashier can make your month. Human connection is
essential for survival, and I’ve felt that void at so many different points in
my life. This song portrays that void, and how even the smallest amount
of kindness can save you.”
The track features on Courtney’s critically lauded May Your
Kindness Remain, which will be released March 23 on Loose and is
now available for pre-order (cma.lnk.to/mykr). Produced
by Mark Howard (Lucinda Williams, Bob Dylan, Emmylou
Harris, Tom Waits), the new album was recorded over eight days at a rented
house-turned-studio in L.A.

shared that she has suffered from sexism and chauvinism throughout her career,

“They would say: ‘I can’t believe you’re a woman playing lead
guitar!’’ There was this immediate assumption that you couldn’t possibly know
what you’re doing, because you’re a woman. It’s so condescending. I’ve probably
had to work twice as hard, just to prove people wrong…. I’ve been hit on in
inappropriate ways, in working situations, like it was just to be expected.
I’ve been talked down to for so long, you barely even notice. But finally, I
think there’s been an awakening of the collective consciousness. Change is
happening.”
Transcending genres including Indie-folk rock, soul, gospel and country –
Courtney’s timeless music and melody driven lilting vocals are drawing
comparisons as diverse as Emmylou Harris, Laura Marling and Julie Byrne.
Fans fell for Courtney’s breakthrough album Honest Life last year, when as the BBC
put it, she became an “overnight success” (Kev
Geoghegan 8 March 2017), after 10 years trying to break into the business.
Courtney has been on the road since she was 16 years old, when she left home in
Arizona for her first tour, sleeping under bridges and upright in cars.
For the next decade she was a session and backup singer and guitarist for
nearly 40 artists – from Jimmy Eat World to Damien Jurado - but she never
stopped writing her own material.
The resulting album HONEST LIFE received
its European release in January 2017, becoming one of the biggest breakthrough

Andrews’ new full-length album, May
Your Kindness Remain, will be released March 23 on
Loose in the UK & Europe and Fat Possum Records/Mama Bird Recording Co. in
the USA and is now available for pre-order (cma.lnk.to/mykr). In advance of the release, the album’s title track is premiered
as part of NPR Music’s “Songs We Love”
series. Of the song NPR Music praises, “May Your Kindness Remain, a
collection of songs, borne from interactions with others, that strives for
healing and empathy in the midst of division and discord.” In support of
the album, Andrews will tour the US and Europe throughout 2018, including a
newly confirmed headline show at London’s Islington Assembly Hall on 24 April –

Produced by Mark Howard (Lucinda Williams, Bob
Dylan, Emmylou Harris, Tom Waits), the album was recorded over eight days at a
rented house-turned-studio in L.A. In addition to Andrews on vocals and
electric/acoustic guitar, the album features Dillon Warnek (electric guitar),
Daniel Walter (organ, Wurlitzer, accordion), Charles Wicklander (piano,
Wurlitzer), William Mapp (drums, percussion), Alex Sabel (bass) and C.C. White
(background vocals).
Of the album and the inspiration behind its ten songs, Andrews comments, “The
people that I’ve met on the road these past few years got me thinking about my
childhood, and the people around me that I’ve known, and the stories that come
from my family. It became clear how many people are struggling through the same
issues. People are constantly chasing that bigger life. A lot of people are
poor in America—and because of those unattainable goals, they’re also mentally
unstable, or sad, or depressed or unfulfilled. A lot of people—myself included
at some point in my life—are loving somebody through this. That’s sort of the
theme of the record: coming to terms with depression and the reality of the
world we’re living in.”

After a sold out
February tour of the UK, Courtney Marie Andrews is back in the UK this
month to appear on the first episode of the 50th series of Later with Jools
Holland alongside the likes of Kasabian, Spoon & Goldfrapp.
Courtney’s
breakthrough album HONEST LIFE has received consistently ecstatic
reviews and she recently found time to record a version of “I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel To Be Free"
with Bonnie “Prince” Billy for Our First 100 Days charity.

Oldham aka Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy joined forces to record a cover of I Wish I
Knew How It Would Feel To Be Free – a song made famous by Nina Simone. The
track which is available on Bandcamp, being
released in aid of the First 100 Days Project, where one rare, unreleased or
exclusive song is released every day of the first 100 days of Donald Trump’s
presidency. Contributors so far include the likes of Bill Fay, Califone, Jason
Molina, Angel Olsen and Loose alumni Hurray For The Riff Raff.

Marie Andrews today announced the release of her new video for single ‘Put
The Fire Out,’ a road worn track which has significantly connected with
UK fans and media. With critical support from esteemed music writers such as
Laura Barton who stated; “In three and a half minutes, it articulated what I
had spent 18 months trying to say”, in a personal piece she wrote for The
Guardian and Spotify, who included it in their prestigious ‘New Music Friday’

the video, which sees Courtney driving an RV through America, Courtney stated,
“This old RV is the biggest piece of work that's ever come into my possession,

time on the road. By the end of the video I get there, but it takes a long
drive.”

“‘Put The Fire Out’ is
a song about letting go, and letting yourself take a break. When writing these
songs, I had been on the road for a couple of years without much downtime. I
felt my place really was at home and I had a deep longing to be near people
that knew me.”
With plans to settle down for a bit and focus on her own songs, Courtney moved
to Seattle in 2011 and recorded her last full-length record On My Page.
However, the record had hardly been released before she was on the road again
performing other artists’ songs, eventually leading her overseas to play guitar
and sing with Belgian star Milow. At the tour’s end the other session players
joined her to record her 2014 EP Leuven Letters in one take. It was during this
time that Courtney also wrote many of the songs on Honest Life.
She found
herself realising the impact of growing up on the road and this constant
reconciling between her own and others’ art and identity. Courtney takes it
from there: “While in Belgium for four months I was going through a major heartbreak. I
started growing homesick for America and the comfort of family and friends.
That's where I wrote the first songs for Honest Life. It was a giant hurdle in
my life, my first true growing pains as a woman. That's why I feel this record
is a coming of age album. A common thread that runs through the songs is a
great desire to fit somewhere, when nowhere fits - and wanting to get back home
to the people I know and love. Once I got back to the USA I started to work at
a small town bar. At the bar I felt I could truly empathize with the stories
and lives of the people there. I wrote the other half of the songs about coming
home and feeling a sense of belonging again. A lot of the stories at that bar
definitely ran parallel with my own, even though our lives were so different. I
was the "musician girl”. They were farmers, construction workers,
plumbers, waitresses, and cashiers. But, no matter how different, I felt we
were all trying to live our most honest life.”
True to her own vision, Andrews produced the resulting album herself and
recorded it at Litho Studios in Seattle with recording engineer Floyd Reitsma,
whose recent credits include Noah Gundersen and Pearl Jam. Honest
Life will be released 20 January 2017 on 180g turquoise vinyl, CD &
download, via Loose.
