Ashton Lane score UK #1 on Official Country Music Chart

GLASGOW BAND ASHTON LANE SCORE UK #1 ON COUNTRY MUSIC CHART WRITING SONGS WITH
FANS OC RECORDS’ ARTIST IN HIGHEST EVER CHART PLACING

** Direct to fan PREORDERS, not pledge or kick starter, all direct to fan sales !! **

With the back catalogue having sold in excess of 30,000 albums independently, their new album THE IN-BETWEEN is set to continue to solidify Ashton Lane and their unique direct-to-fan model as one of the most exciting bands in the emerging UK Country scene.

GLASGOW band Ashton Lane have scored a major chart success - by writing songs with their fans.
The country duo, husband and wife pair Esther and Tim O’Connor, took the unusual approach to their new album THE IN-BETWEEN.

Now the pair are reaping the rewards of their collaborative songwriting process, after the LP charted at the top of the British country music chart.
The 11 songs on the album, released by Glasgow independent label OC Records, were written all written this year in Glasgow after the band gave fans the chance to write songs with them.
It saw Esther and Tim meeting with eleven fans who had submitted lyrics and ideas for songs following a social media campaign.

The fans came with their stories of love and love lost as well as one about an interesting historical figure, Ruth Ellis, which inspired Marilyn Curls - the lead single from The In-Between. Ashton Lane then crafted these into Bespoke Songs for them.
Now the pair are planning to follow the success of The In-Between with a second collaborative album in 2019.

The album also saw Ashton Lane achieve their highest position on a host of other charts. They charted at No.1 on the UK country chart, No.6 on the UK indie chart, 34 on the Official Scottish chart, 69 in the UK national physical album chart and charted on the official UK chart for the first time, coming in at 95.

The album success comes after they achieved their first number one single on the iTunes Country Charts last year with Breathe You In.

Maverick Magazine ***** "Impressive album that showcases the duo at their strongest

The band preview their songs on their Facebook Kitchen Sessions and have amassed an incredible 4 million hits so far. They’ve performed at the prestigious Country 2 Country Festival in London, and were double nominated at the 2016 British Country Music Awards.

Esther O’Connor said: "We are thrilled to see our direct to fan model really proving itself and working well. It was brilliant to hit the UK charts independently which has been a real achievement for us. Hitting the top spot on the UK country official album charts has been one of the highlights of our year."

Tim added: “We are really excited about 2019 as we are already working on another album ‘Travelling Mercies’ where we are again co-writing songs with our fans about their stories and experiences. Writing in this way has been one of the most creatively rewarding things we’ve ever done - getting to tell the real life stories of our fans through our songs. To then see our album of co-written songs (The In-Between) hit the UK charts was a total thrill for all involved."

Ashton Lane are a Scottish family group who are named after a cute cobbled street in the West End of Glasgow where funky retro charity shops, cinema and bars can be found.
They consist of: Esther O’Connor (lead vocals), Tim O’Connor (guitar, backing vocals) and James Duffin (lead guitar, backing vocals).
Esther is the lead singer of her 3-piece band that includes her husband Tim and brother James. They write all their own songs, and sometimes even co-write with Dad who is Graeme Duffin from the legendary 80’s/90’s band WET WET WET.

During 2012 as a way of introducing themselves to a wider audience  they have been recording what are called “Kitchen Sessions” (Fun time in their own kitchen) sharing covers of artists that have influenced their own music, these include: Lady Antebellum, Rascal Flatts, The Band Perry, The Civil Wars and Taylor Swift.

In her recent web chat Taylor says she loves to bake - “It’s a very serious thing” she said and loves the soothing qualities measuring out ingredients and getting everything cookin’. Taylor plans to go into “baking overdrive” for The Fall season!
It therefore seems appropriate for Country Routes News Blog to take a look at Ashton Lane’s Kitchen covers of Taylor’s songs!

Redhead Esther (photo) tackles Taylor’s brand new single from her forthcoming album RED coming out October 22nd!

About the song:  Taylor premiered this kiss-off country-punk song on her August 13th YouTube Webchat and it was released to iTunes that same night.
Swift's "Never” débuted at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and broke a record formerly held by Lady Gaga's "Born This Way" for the largest first-week digital sales for a song by female artist.
Taylor's song sold 623,000 in its first week (6 days of sales); compared to 448K sold in 3 days, before the chart was compiled for "Born This Way".  Sales of Gaga's song actually increased in Week 2 (jumping by 14%), while sales of Swift's song dropped by 51%. In the first two weeks combined, "Born This Way" sold 957K, compared to 930K for Swift's hit.
Taylor will have a Platinum single in only three weeks, a feat which might be something of a country digital record!
Written by Taylor Swift, Max Martin, Shellback and produced with Dann Huff it was released by Big Machine as the lead single from Tay’s fourth studio album.
A physical CD single is set to be released in September 2012.

It impacted on country radio on December 5, 2011 with the song peaking at number one on the Billboard Country Songs Chart and number thirteen on the Hot 100 and was certified Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America.
In late August 2012 the single had sold 1,212,218 copies and is one of 15, soon to be 16, solo million-sellers for Miss Swift.

5 ) “Lego House” (Ed Sheeran)  >>  Aston Lane Cover YouTube

Ed recently wrote and recorded songs with Taylor Swift for her upcoming fourth album, "Red." He was tight-lipped about the collaboration, but said the experience was a "breath of fresh air" because of Swift's colossal success.
"As a person, Taylor's such a sweetheart," he said in a recent interview. "(She's) the perfect example of what musicians should be and how they should work and react. She just loves music and she's not in it for anything else."

Here Ashton Lane, with Esther joining the "gingers alliance", takes a shine to Ed's “Lego House” which was his first song to make the BBC Radio 2 playlist.
Ed co-wrote it with Jake Gosling, Chris Leonard and it was released as the third single lifted from the debut studio album “+” (4× Platinum certification in UK) on 11 November 2011.
The song has peaked at number 5 on the UK Singles Chart.
So impressed with Ed’s song when she saw the video whilst on tour in Australia, Taylor tracked down the British writer and gave him a call!

Ashton Lane are no one trick country ponies, as well as the ability to cover songs they have their own music.
Inspired by the new country sounds on the radio in Nashville they found their “musically home”.

All tracks that made the album cuts were written and recorded in Glasgow at Foundry Music Lab.
