Billboard Top 200 / Country Album Chart News

The unstoppable soundtrack to Disney's "Frozen" continued its run atop the Billboard Top 200 Album Chart (BB200) as it clocked a 10th non-consecutive week at No.1. The set sold 133,165 copies (11% down) in the week ending April 13, according to Nielsen SoundScan. The album’s cumulative sales also climb past the 2 million mark (After 20 weeks – 2,076,587)
"Frozen" is now one of just 11 albums to have spent at least 10 weeks at No.1 since the chart started using SoundScan's point-of-sale data on May 25, 1991. Four of those 11 albums also happen to be soundtracks: “Frozen,” Whitney Houston's "The Bodyguard" (20 weeks at No. 1), "Titanic" (16 weeks) and "The Lion King" (10 weeks). In addition, "Frozen" now ties "The Lion King" for the most weeks at No. 1 for an animated film soundtrack.

Martina McBride became the only woman in the chart’s 50-year history to debut at No.1 on the Billboard Country Album Chart with an independently released and distributed album, as EVERLASTING (Vinyl Recordings) arrived on the BB200 at No.7, her highest debut in seven years, selling 20,880 copies
The title also opened at No.2 on Billboard Independent Albums.
"Everlasting" is McBride's highest-charting album on the Billboard 200 since 2007's WAKING UP LAUGHING debuted and peaked at No. 4. This is her fourth #1 album and first since 2009's SHINE.

Martina’s previous 5 Albums (Chart Debuts and sales)

  • Her seventh studio album MARTINA (RCA Nashville) released on Sept 30, 2003 peaked at #7 on the Billboard 200 and was a #1Country album. It opened with sales of 123,000 units; and by the end of Oct 2005 had sold 1.7 million. In the U.S. the album was certified Gold on Nov 7, 2003, Platinum on Jan 12, 2004 and 2xPlatinum on April 20, 2006 by the R.I.A.A.
  • Her eighth studio album TIMELESS (RCA Nashville) released October 18, 2005 peaked at #3 on the BB200 and #1 Country. It marked her third consecutive No.1 on Billboard's Top Country Albums list. With debut sales of 185,000 copies, the 18-track collection of classic country songs also achieves her best sales week to date.
  • Her ninth studio album WAKING UP LAUGHING (RCA Nashville) released April 3, 2007 peaked at #4 on the BB200 and #2 Country (chart week April 21, 2007). It opened with sales of 138,666 copies and was blocked to #1 by Tim McGraw's album LET IT GO (176,592 2nd week sales)
  • Her 10th studio album SHINE (RCA Nashville), released March 24, 2009 (RCA Nashville) peaked at #10 on the BB200 and #1 Country (chart week April 11, 2009) and opened with sales of 41,457 copies
  • ELEVEN (Republic Nashville) her eleventh studio, released October 11, 2011 peaked at #4 on the BB200 and #4 Country (chart week Oct 29, 2011) and opened with sales of 40,116 copies (blocked by Scotty McCreery 88,153 (2nd week), new entry from Lauren Alaina 69,013 sales)
“Everlasting” is a collection of Motown hits and oldies done her own way. McBride says she intended the album to be a gift, something you could relax with or put on while you're cooking. "It's like comfort food," she says. It features Kelly Clarkson on the Etta James and Sugar Pie DeSanto classic "In The Basement," and Gavin DeGraw on Sam Cooke's "Bring It On Home To Me."
Even though Martina McBride‘s new CD is a collection of R&B covers, she doesn’t believe Everlasting is that much of a departure for her. “I just follow my instincts, and in thinking about what I wanted to sing next, and what I wanted to do next, I thought, ‘Well, I’m a country music artist, and a very proud one. But at the end of the day, I'm a vocalist,’” she said. “You know, I love to sing everything. So, in my shows over the years, we've done everything from ‘Somewhere Over the Rainbow’ to Pat Benatar to Aretha Franklin to Journey, whatever. So I just wanted to kinda stretch and do something a little different.”
Martina even picked a title that continues the thread she started with her 2005 collection of country classics. “This music is timeless, but I couldn't call it Timeless, 'cause I've done that already. So, it seemed like Everlasting was kind of the same idea. And I just love the idea. It's very musical and poetic.”

Promoting the album Tuesday (4/8) Martina McBride appeared on Today (NBC) on April 8th. She performed her cover of the Etta James classic "In The Basement" on TV show Arsenio. On PBS-TV's Tavis Smiley she explained why she's charting new territory with forthcoming album non country classic soul and R&B set titled Everlasting. "I'm excited about this tour cos I'm going to do a whole tour around this album bringing out a horn section, backing vocals and maybe do some moves!" she shared. >> Watch at pbs.org  There was also an exclusive Album Premiere of new album at Billboard.com

Critical reception for “Everlasting”:
12 Tracks / Time: 39:01 (Vinyl Recordings)
CD - MP3 - UK iTunes (2 Bonus Tracks) - Amazon.com

Allmusic (Rating: 3.5 STARS) ... Everlasting has soul in its heart, with the singer tackling R&B standards....There's warmth in Was' production and honey in McBride's voice and if the combination can sometimes result in too-sweet tea, it's nevertheless soothing.
USA Today by Jerry Shriver (Rating: 3 out of 4 STARS) Covering classic soul tunes is an overdone concept, but this well-chosen collection shines, particularly when McBride teams with Gavin DeGraw (Bring It On Home To Me) and Kelly Clarkson (In the Basement). Download: If You Don't Know Me By Now, Wild Night

Oakland Press (Rating: 3 STARS) ....So “Everlasting,” produced by Detroit native Don Was, is a labor of love and a testament to McBride’s versatility, showing she can sell even the most gutbucket R&B tunes with her pure vocal tone and exceptional phrasing skills...McBride will likely return to original material on her next project, but “Everlasting” is a welcome and successful exercise in creative stretching.
Country Weekly (Rating: A-) Different as they may appear on the surface, country music and soul have a great deal in common: talented vocalists who sing with feeling, impeccable songwriting and melodies that you can’t shake, for starters. So while it may seem like a drastic change of course for Martina McBride to go soul on the new album Everlasting, it’s really more of a slight left for the lady....Overall the recording sounds great—warm and intimate without sacrificing polish. If there’s a complaint, it’s that the era-hopping from Elvis’ “Suspicious Minds”
to Motown to Phil Spector’s “To Know Him Is to Love Him” feels a little stylistically scattered. But thankfully, there’s always Martina right in the center, pulling the disparate threads together into one soulful mixture.

Billboard by Chuck Dauphin: Whether it be on time-honored classics as “Do Right Woman, Do Right Man” or “To Know Him Is To Love Him,” the angelic voice of McBride shines from beginning to end on these evergreen compositions....Throw in an energetic duet with Kelly Clarkson on “In The Basement,” and you’ve got an excellent disc that celebrates some of the best American Pop music of the past five decades – from one of its’ best singers!

Roughstock: ...Even though McBride’s new covers collection, Everlasting, is as much not-country as albums past, few will likely complain. This 12-song collection is filled with oldies but goodies, which lean most closely to the R&B and soul realm in music history. And it’s wonderful! For some of us, many of these songs are also all time favorites; the ones that still get turned up every time they come up in the oldies radio rotation.....It’s difficult to imagine snobby people getting all hot and bothered over musical genre classification when listening to Everlasting. It’s not really about whether or not this is country music; it’s about great songs sung well. Therefore, put it on. Turn it up. And enjoy.

Last week’s Country No.1 Dan+Shay’s album WHERE IT ALL BEGAN slid 6-25 on the BB200 (1-6 Country) with sales down 68% in their second week

In the wake of his exposure on the Academy of Country Music Awards on April 6 saw Luke Bryan's CRASH MY PARTY jump 15-8 on the BB200 (3-2 Country; 19,000; up 14%). Florida Georgia Line, returned to the top 10, climbing 19-10 on the BB200 with HERE'S TO THE GOOD TIMES (sales of 17,000; were up 14%).
Kacey Musgraves secured a 27% sales boost (65-34 BB200) for her ACM Award-winning SAME TRAILER DIFFERENT PARK (Mercury) and has surpassed 400,000 in sales after 56 weeks. Darius Rucker’s TRUE BELIEVERS album also picked up some ACM traction after his performance of “Wagon Wheel” moving 160-108 on the BB200 (26-19 Country). The set has now surpassed the GOLD certification mark at retail and has now sold 502,000 copies in 47 chart weeks.

Carlene Carter made a debut at #40 selling 1,400 copies of CARTER GIRL. It landed at #13 on the Americana Music playlist charts before it was official released. It made its debut in the UK on the Official Country Album Chart at No.3 (Week April 19, 2014)

Critical reception for “Carter Girl”:
12 Tracks/ Time: 46:06 CD - MP3 - Smart Choice Music - Amazon.com

Allmusic (rating: 4 STARS) A great legacy can be a blessing and a curse, and when your mother is June Carter and your stepdad is Johnny Cash, you're going to have a lot to live up to in the minds of most folks....2014's Carter Girl, she embraces their vital role in country music's history while also putting her own stamp on their body of work.... There's as much rock and blues as country in her takes on "Little Black Train," "Blackie's Gunman," and "Blackjack David," but Carter approaches these songs as something fresh and vital, and she fills them with her own fearless spirit....On Carter Girl, Carlene Carter has confronted the mighty legacy of the Carter Family's songbook and allowed it to strengthen her music rather than buckling under its weight, and this ranks with her finest recorded work to date.

Huffington Post Carlene Carter's new album, a tribute to the musical heritage of her fabled family, is a triumph. Carlene and producer Don Was sifted through some 400 songs before settling on the 12 tracks for Carter Girl, a blending of Carter/Cash classics, songs from her own catalogue and a couple of relative obscurities. Extended family members like Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson, Mickey Raphael, Vince Gill and Elizabeth Cook help make the music shine as bright as the last name of the man at the mixing board, Bob Clearmountain....If you think Bob Dylan invented the "Ain't Gonna Work" song, Carter Girl's final number, "I Ain't Gonna Work Tomorrow," will disabuse you of that notion. It "builds on a track featuring the Carter Sisters, Johnny Cash and the acoustic guitar of the late Cowboy Jack Clement," according to Jim Bessman's liner notes. (Yes, old-school liner notes come with the CD!). Carter Girl is that rare contemporary album with a cohesiveness that rewards listening from start to finish.....further proof that the Carter/Cash circle is unbroken.

Boston Globe Carter’s pose on the cover evokes her mother, but this isn’t meant to be a sepia-toned reproduction of those old songs. Instead, Carter brings them into her musical world ...This may be the best record this Carter girl has ever made.

Ronnie Dunn made a debut at #55 with around 1,000 copies sold of PEACE, LOVE AND COUNTRY MUSIC which was released 8th April 2014 through his own Little Will-E Records.
The 14-track collection was produced by Ronnie with Jeff Balding and includes the single>> “Kiss You There.” Physical copies were made available exclusively through lifestyle retailer Country Outfitter, and digital versions through all digital music outlets.
I really wanted fans to have a say in which songs I put on this album,” said Dunn in a Press Release. “I put a few songs out on social media to see what people liked, or maybe what they didn’t respond to, and we built the album from there. Partnering with Country Outfitter just makes sense because they represent all aspects of the country lifestyle, and music is a huge part of that.
The veteran country superstar was due to perform on national television Wednesday, April 16 on the popular syndicated show, Dr. Phil.  Singing the poignant song “I Wish I Still Smoked Cigarettes,” penned by Luke Laird, Lori McKenna and Barry Dean,

Critical reception for “Peace Love and Country Music:
14 tracks/ Time: MP3 - UK iTunes - Amazon.com

Roughstock: Ronnie Dunn lays down the gauntlet with “Country In Texas” as he searches for the last remnants of true country music with lines like, “I turn on the radio they’re mixing heavy metal with twang.” You get a lot with Dunn’s second solo album, but you won’t find one iota of bad metal-twang stew here....Whether he intended to do so or not, Dunn oftentimes finds himself getting nostalgic with this latest effort. The song “I Wish I Still Smoked Cigarettes” is not actually about missing sucking down cancer sticks. Rather, it’s nostalgia for that period in his life when he was fearless....Peace Love And Country Music may not take Ronnie Dunn into the stadiums Brooks & Dunn once filled consistently, but it nevertheless provides undeniable evidence that the powers that made B&D country superstars are still fueling Mr. Dunn’s solo work.

cmchatlive.com: ......the album is incredibly solid, opening with “Grown Damn Man,” a lyrical journey into Ronnie Dunn and what the album is about......One thing I love about this album is that it stays very true to who Ronnie Dunn is as an artist, without compromise. Any of these songs could’ve appeared on a Brooks & Dunn album ten years ago without feeling out of place..... Interestingly, the album wraps with its title track, “Peace Love and Country Music.” Much like a closer in a Major League Baseball game, this track is a strong and reliable, sounding as much as a prayer as a song. It’s hard to disagree with Ronnie Dunn here, as we could certainly use more peace, love and country music in the world, as well as more albums today like Peace Love and Country Music

Randy Houser with “Goodnight Kiss” (Stoney Creek) moved 2-1 to top the Mediabase Country chart for the tracking week April 6th to the 12th. The song logged 7,573 radio spins (+310) and 60.157 million audience impressions from 148 tracking stations.
So it’s congrats to Jon Loba, Carson James, Chris Loss and the entire Stoney Creek promotion team for scoring the week’s #1 spot. This is Houser’s third consecutive chart-topper, following “How Country Feels” and “Runnin’ Outta Moonlight,” the latter of which hit #1 on Mon, August 5th. All three are on Houser’s “How Country Feels” album, released in 2013.

Known amongst fans and industry insiders alike for his powerhouse vocals and versatile songwriting abilities, Houser’s previous successes include the 2009 No. 2 hit “Boots On” (written by Houser and Brandon Kinney) and debut power ballad “Anything Goes.” He has had a hand in writing numerous hits for other artists, including Trace Adkins’ 2006 smash “Honky Tonk Badonkadonk,” which also peaked just shy of the top at No. 2. While “How Country Feels” and “Runnin’ Outta Moonlight” each gave Houser the well-earned No. 1 spot as an artist, “Goodnight Kiss” is an especially sweet victory for the seasoned songsmith.
I have been so blessed this past year to have such incredible success on country radio and have three number-one’s in a row,” said Houser. “But it’s especially cool to see ‘Goodnight Kiss’ up there this week and to have that recognition now as a songwriter, too.” (Source – Press Release)

It was also congrats to Warner Music Nashville SVP/Promotion Kevin Herring, VP/Promotion Kristen Williams and their entire promo team for earing 64 MEDIABASE adds on Blake Shelton's "My Eyes." Those adds gave Shelton the "Most Added" title for the week. Bagels were due to be delivered to Warner's office (April 15th) to congratulate the staff on their success.

Lisa Redford joined BBC Radio 2's Bob Harris in an Under The Apple Tree Session.

Suzy Bogguss performed tracks from her album of Merle Haggard songs on BBC Radio Scotland's Another Country with Ricky Ross - BBC Page She also appeared on Showcase TV Inside Music Row >> YouTube

Bob Harris was joined in session (First broadcast Thursday 10 April) by US superstar Eric Church, singing songs from, and discussing his new album "The Outsiders". "I really see this album as a game-changer for us," Eric says of his fourth album and the follow-up to his platinum breakthrough Chief. "I want people to understand that we're here and that we will be reckoned with."
>> Listen to a segment from the programme where Bob and Eric discuss the changing face of country music (something to which Mr.Harris has described as a “Tipping Point Moment”) and his observation on the reaction to the Zac Brown Band at the C2C Festival at the O2 in London in March.

BH - One of the things that is so interesting at the moment is how much of the new music that is coming into the charts in Nashville, and we're not talking about left field necessarily, but big selling music in Nashville right now, is demonstrating influences that you wouldn't necessarily expect in country music from a new young generation that maybe did listen to some rap on their radio station and did listen to some heavy metal and whatever and its all feeding into the music now.
EC - For me the rock 'n' roll element (I'm a child of the 80s) there's a lot of rock ‘n’ roll I absorbed, it's authentic, it’s not me trying to be rock ‘n’ roll. I grew up listening to as much as that as I did to country in that time. That's what made me up. For the next generation hip hop was massive when they were growing up that's what they absorbed. I think you hear it now in country. I think that's authentic to me because that's what made them up artistically, it's always been that way.

EC - Music is supposed to evolve, that's a natural progress. Rock ‘n’ roll today does not sound like it did in 1957 either and I think that's by design and that's the evolution of it, so I don't get caught up in the boundary part of it very much.

BH - The Zac Brown Band rounded off the evening on Saturday night at C2C. It was very interesting to see the reaction to them because the traditionalists there at the O2 that night didn't like the idea of this band up on stage doing Metallica covers and Led Zeppelin covers and all of that..
“The great thing about Zac Brown Band is the music comes from a real place. It’s not formulaic, it’s not manufactured. It’s a spontaneous living breathing thing. Yes, it’s different. Yes, it’s adventurous. But most important of all, it’s just damn good.” says Eric Church the co-writer of their new radio single "All Alright".

I did promise you Ward Thomas, two very talented twins from Hampshire. Now they're about to tour in Tennessee the home of country music, probably Nashville, buckle on the bible belt. Talk about bringing coals to Newcastle and those country boys down there in Nashville think they're fantastic, so do we"..."You can understand why there's so much fuss about them" - Terry Wogan (April 13) BBC Playlist Page

Ward Thomas were also the subject of a Record of the Day feature, which is an independent company publishing a weekly PDF magazine and a daily email newsletter featuring the most relevant and up-to-date music and media news imaginable.
They wrote: Country music still seems to be openly reviled within the British music industry. Yet it often brings some of the finest crafted songs and killer melodies, quite frankly. Radio 2 is the genre's biggest supporter in the UK and it's where Ward Thomas has recently found a welcoming home, thanks to legends like Bob Harris and Terry Wogan, and now a place on the station's B list with this excellent track. ......They went down a storm at last month's C2C Festival at London's O2 and are currently Stateside, cementing their reputation as one of the hottest new acts in country music.

Johnny Cash with OUT AMONG THE STARS (Columbia) falls 4-6 in its second week at retail with sales of 10,374 copies (Last week’s sales were 19,347 sales). The album is Cash's highest charting studio album ever, only his 1969 live set Johnny Cash At San Quentin peaked higher, reaching #2.

Official UK Country Album Chart (Week Ending April 19, 2014)
Johnny Cash with OUT AMONG THE STARS (Columbia) stays at No.1 for a second week
Martina McBride with EVERLASTING (Vinyl Recordings) debuts at No.2
Carlene Carter with CARTER GIRL (Rounder) debuts at No.3
Emmylou Harris with the remastered expanded update of WRECKING BALL (Nonesuch) returns to the chart at No.13
Dan+Shay fall 11-16 with WHERE IT ALL BEGAN (Warner Bros) in their second week (The current Billboard Country #1)

On the Hotdisc Chart (April 13, 2014 Chart)
Bertie Higgins, with "Just Another Day In Paradise" stayed at No.1 for a second week on the Hotdisc Top 40.
Jamie O'Neal (making her debut on Hotdisc) who last week had the Hot Shot Debut blowing in at No.3 edged up one rung to No.2  with her cover of the Juice Newton hit "The Sweetest Thing" as former 2-week chart topper M Callahan with “Chicken On A Chain” slipped by 2-3.
In their second week on the chart from the Hotdisc #184 April 2014 promo disc saw Ray Scott with his witty "Gotta Quit Drinkin'" hold at #4, Billy Yates with self penned “As I Kiss My World Goodbye” moved 6-5, Jeff Griffith with “She’s All I Ever Drink About” stayed at No.7, D K Davis with “Waitin’ On The Weekend” climbed into the Top 10 (15-9)

TREAT YOURSELF for EASTER!

The Hayley Oliver Band with “Bright Side Of Life” (written by Tom Paden and Carol Elliott) made news as they climbed 8-6 to grab themselves yet another British and Irish Hotdisc chart topper to add to their growing collection of No.1 singles as it became their 11th success. Their previous 2013 singles “Right Person At The Right Time” (8 weeks at #1), “Could I Be More Blue” (5 weeks at #1), “Good Old Days” and “The Hand That Rocked The Cradle” (9 weeks at #1) all topped the British summit.
However it's been a while since they topped the main Hotdisc Top 40 ranking which dates back to July 2010. What a year that was for them when all of their three #1 singles “Another Lonely Night”, “Tell Me Why” (Karla Bonoff) and “I'm A Little Bluer Than That” (Irene Kelley”) went to the top.
Many of  the 1000 DJ’s and Industry music contacts across Europe who receive the promo disc have always rated The Hayley Oliver Band favourable as have the main UK Press publications (CrXss Country, Country Music People, Maverick) who handed out 4 and 5 Stars glowing reviews to their June 2013 release of ABINGER GROVE. However all this critical acclaim has not resulted in success at the major online retail sites with fans and radio listeners showing little interest to purchase their latest set. It has rarely troubled the top 1000 places in 9 months on the Top 1500 iTunes Country Album Chart and has not showed its face on the chart for many weeks. On Amazon UK it has a current ranking of #85,555 in MP3 Albums. How to transform chart success into retail sales appears to be the biggest hurdle and challenge for UK country artists, particularly those making original material.

Also advancing up the Top 40 chart was Ireland’s Philomena Begley & Ray Lynam’s duet “The Fire Of Two Old Flames” (16-12), British artist Gary Curtis with “Crazy Love” (17-11) and David Starr with “Underneath The Clear Blue Skies” (19-15). Those who freshened up the Top 20 tier were US act Markus Fox (22-16) with “I’m Still Coming Home” (written by Mike Lane and Joe Lickteig) , Canada’s Domino with “All We Need Tonight” (Writers Luanne Carl and Dave Woods) made a 23-18 climb and Britians Mexican Joe Walker rounded out the top 20 with a 25-20 hop for “Louisana Saturday Night” (Bob McDill)

He logged 11 years as host of NBC’s “Late Night” before famously being passed over at NBC for Johnny Carson’s throne on “The Tonight Show” — over Carson’s objection. Letterman has logged more than 6,000 episodes during his long career.
  • Billboard: ABC's 'Nashville' Shoots For Ratings Boost With Concert Tour & Soundtrack It’s a toss-up whether "Nashville" will return to Nashville. Just two months ago, the hourlong soap set in country music’s epicenter appeared destined for cancelation — according to a source, crew members were informed they should look for work come May. Season-two ratings have steadily eroded since an audience of 6.5 million watched the Sept. 25 premiere. The show’s audience was 5.2 million on its last broadcast — March 26 — according to Nielsen. Its season average is 5.5 million. But the lack of hits on ABC’s schedule has put "Nashville" on life support. And a source close to the production tells Billboard that the network “has invested heavily in the show” and that “by no means is it on its last legs.” A flurry of activity will close out the season for the Lionsgate-ABC-Opry Entertainment drama starring Connie Britton and Hayden Panettiere, including a new soundtrack, a live tour and TV concert special.
The Nashville concert tour (Charles Esten, Clare Bowen, Jonathan Jackson, Sam Palladio and Chris Carmack) is a big hit. Tickets for the trek's stops in Chicago, New York City and Washington, D.C. sold out within minutes of going on sale earlier this month. Now, the cast of the ABC TV hit has added another concert date: Monday, May 5 at the Tower Theater in Philadelphia.

Are Amazon UK encouraging us to hoard even more jewel cases and CD’s?
Amazon introduced the AutoRip service in 2013 which means that whenever you buy a CD or a vinyl album you also get free MP3 versions.
An example of this is Eric Church’s new album THE OUTSIDERS. If you buy the CD album for £9.45 you get the MP3 version (worth £8.99) for FREE.

DO YOU STILL LOVE JEWEL BOX CDs !
What is more, customers who have bought physical music from the online retailer in the past will find that it is now all available in digital form in Amazon's CloudPlayer.
This could be rather scary - Amazon started selling CDs in the UK back in 1999, and you may find the evidence of your past musical tastes rather distressing! But how attractive will this feature really be?
You might think most music fans were rapidly abandoning CDs for digital downloads, so that this kind of hybrid service would soon be irrelevant. Paul Firth, head of music for Amazon UK said “he's confident there is a large body of consumers for whom Autorip will be attractive”. The company still shifts a lot of CDs, and the sales are growing in the UK, which means that it has a growing share of a shrinking market. In the US, where the service has been live since January 2013, it has helped grow sales - those CDs which are licensed for Autorip were selling faster than those that aren't. BBC Technology.

Well, the discussion between myself and [guitarist] Steuart Smith was landscape painting and we talked about Cèzanne a lot, and we tend to talk in terms of art [when discussing] music. Our sense was that we were recording these songs that had a certain amount of pastoral landscape tonality to it. There were other songs that I recorded that in the end were songs that were very worthy of being on the album, but the decision was to let the pastoral watercolors set the tone for this album....

Debate: Is Spotify killing the music industry?
Thanks to piracy and the Youtube explosion, for the first time consumers had the chance to stop paying for music. Record sales plummeted, record companies’ profits fell and, perhaps most importantly, there was little to no investment in new talent and a huge amount of pressure on artists who did get signed.
With six million paying subscribers, some commentators hail Spotify as the saviour of the music industry. Six million is undoubtedly a massive number by any account; but the reality is that Spotify needs at least 10 times this amount before they can start thinking about paying artists properly. Spotify is no saviour: it is perpetuating the problems of an already dying industry....Spotify certainly occupies an acceptable space between the guilt ridden piracy route and buying an over priced CD for £10. However, with the industry average offering slightly less than 0.4p a stream – this means that 1 million streams of a song would generate about £3,800. It is unrealistic to suggest that most songs will receive anywhere near that amount of plays.
Furthermore, most of the Spotify’s payouts go directly to the label; the artists and songwriters see little of this profit. In 2010, Lady Gaga claimed that she personally received a $167 cheque for over 1 million plays of her song ‘Poker Face’ on Spotify; it is important to remember that there are few songs as ubiquitous and over played as ‘Poker Face’.....

Business Time.com: Spotify and YouTube Are Just Killing Digital Music Sales
Now, with a deluge of  music streaming services letting fans listen to songs for free, the digital download may be going the way of the CD and the cassette tape before it.U.S. digital track sales decreased for the first time ever in 2013, dropping from 1.34 billion to 1.26 billion, according to Nielsen SoundScan.
CD sales also continued their ongoing decline, dropping 14 percent to 165 million. Digital album sales were stable, staying at 118 million sold last year. Meanwhile the number of songs streamed through services like Spotify, YouTube and Rhapsody increased 32 percent to 118.1 billion.
The rise of streaming has been swift. Spotify just arrived on U.S. shores in the summer of 2011, but it has become a lightning rod for controversy thanks to a chorus of artists who decry that paying musicians a fraction of a cent per listen is unfair........However, the music industry’s core problem—that lots of fans just don’t want to pay for music—remains an issue. Most people use the free, ad-supported version of Spotify, and the company recently expanded its free offering to mobile devices. The most popular platform for listening to music among young people is YouTube, which is almost entirely free. If these businesses can convert lots of free users into paying subscribers, artists, then record labels and the companies themselves will be awash in money. A premium subscriber to Spotify, Rdio or Google’s streaming service spends $120 per year on music, or enough to buy about 12 digital albums. That’s plenty to sustain the industry?!!!
In America, regarding digital sales in 2013, saw a 1.0% decline in revenue from downloads to $2.8 billion which suggest that consumers may be shifting away from owning music towards streaming services that give them access to large catalogs of music, such as Spotify, Beats Music, Slacker and Rdio. Sales from CD's, vinyl and other physical formats dropped 12.3% in 2013.
Billboard published the first Quarter sales for 2014 in the US. Country music albums sold 8,076,000 (Physical sales 5,280,000 (down 9%) + Digital sales 2,796,000 (down 12.3%)) which is 19.7% down at the same point in 2013 (10,052,000 sales)
Country wasn’t alone in that decline. Altogether the entire industry sold 312 million downloads, down 12.5% from Q1 2013. All genres moved a total of 61.7 million albums, which likewise marked a 16.6% fall from 2013 numbers

R.I.P
James “Jesse” Winchester May 17, 1944 – April 11, 2014
Jesse Winchester, the American musician and songwriter entered hospice care on April 7th. He died at his home in Charlottesville, Va., Friday morning (April 11), at age 69 following a battle with cancer. His music blended folk, country and blues and he found his greatest success as an artist in the folk music genre.
Martin Murphey enjoyed a Top 5 country hit in 1986 with Jesse’s song, “I’m Gonna Miss You, Girl.”
Jesse was born in Shreveport, La., but lived in Canada for a time when he moved to that country in protest of the Vietnam War. He returned to the U.S. after President Jimmy Carter granted pardons to those who had left the country to avoid the draft.
Last year, artists such as James Taylor, Vince Gill and Jimmy Buffett participated in a tribute album of Jesse’s songs titled Quiet About It. Jesse had completed an album of his own, A Reasonable Amount of Trouble, which is slated to be released later this year.
His highest charting recordings were of his own tunes, "Yankee Lady" in 1970 and "Say What" in 1981.
Winchester is probably best known as a songwriter, with his works being recorded by many notable artists, including Patti Page ("Brand New Tennessee Waltz”), Elvis Costello, Nicolette Larson ("Rhumba Girl"), Jimmy Buffett ("I Wave Bye Bye", "Nothin' But a Breeze"), Dan Seals ("Gentleman of Leisure"), Joan Baez ("The Brand New Tennessee Waltz2), Anne Murray ("Wintery Feeling"), Reba McEntire ("You Remember Me" - Rumor Has it 1990), Wynonna Judd ("Just Like New", "Let's Make a Baby King" - Tell Me Why 1993), The Mavericks ("O What a Thrill"), The Everly Brothers ("The Brand New Tennessee Waltz") and Emmylou Harris ("My Songbird" - 1998 Spyboy), David Ball ("Freewheeler" - 2004), Cheryl Wheeler ("Defying Gravity" - 2005) , Claire Lynch ("That's What Makes You Strong" - 2009), George Strait ("A Showman's Life" - Here for a Good Time 2011), Lyle Lovett ("Isn't That So" - 2012) and Don Williams ( "If I Were Free" - 2014)
