MUSIC NEWS
Billboard.biz - U.S. album sales have hit new historic lows over the last five weeks marking the longest consecutive stretch in the SoundScan era that the industry has gone without scanning more than 5 million units. And, over the last two weeks, album sales hit consecutive record lows. Which begs the question, is it all due to the summer doldrums, streaming's rise, dwindling catalog sales or all three?...For the week ending July 28, U.S. album sales totaled 4.68 million the lowest weekly total since the inception of Nielsen SoundScan in May 1991. The previous record low was only the prior week when sales were 4.71 million units....This year already, there are nine weeks under the 5 million units album sales mark, with the last five weeks marking the longest consecutive period the industry has gone without scanning more than 5 million units..."This is the year that CD sales bottom is falling out" at Newbury Comics, says the retail chain's CEO Mike Dreese. So far this year, CD sales are down 14.1% to 88.8 million from the 103.3 million scanned in the same time period in the corresponding period last year, according to Nielsen SoundScan. But digital album sales aren't faring too well lately either. In the first four weeks of the second quarter, the digital album growth slowed to a 1.9% increase after growing at a 10.4% pace in the first quarter.

  • Stream Amanda Shires’ DOWN FELL THE DOVES album at The Wall Street Journal (May 28, 2013) ..When Amanda Shires began working on her new album, “Down Fell the Doves” she was having a rough time of it: the singer, songwriter and violinist had a fiddle accident onstage, had a relationship fall apart and broke a finger on her bowing hand, which still has pins in it. Shires was channeling her misery into songwriting when she came up against another unforeseen situation: she fell in love, with singer and guitarist Jason Isbell, whom she married earlier this year....
  • NPR.org Violinist Amanda Shires Picks Up The Pieces: Shires could have used a little protection during the run-up to her latest album, Down Fell The Doves. In the months before starting work on the record, she had broken a finger, ended a long-term relationship and watched as a cherished instrument — her 150-year-old fiddle, with which she had toured for 15 years — was destroyed in an onstage accident. Shires discusses her challenging year and the dark, frank music that came out of it.

Not only is “Devastate” the title of a song on Amanda Shires’ new album, it’s an apt description of what Shires does with her music. The Texas-born singer, songwriter and violin player writes searing lyrics that she sings with a little catch in her voice, as if she’s willing her heart not to break mid-song.“Devastate,” a gritty fiddle-laced rocker that comes from Shires’ fourth solo album, “Down Fell the Doves.” It’s a lovely collection of 11 new songs, most of which feature her husband Jason Isbell on guitar, that include a soulful love letter to Leonard Cohen and a fierce meditation on invincibility. Though Shires is happily married (she and Isbell exchanged vows in February, and their Twitter conversations are a reason to follow both), she said “Devastate” comes from a place of insecurity.

With the July 30th release of Vince Gill and Paul Franklin’s album BAKERSFIELD, fans are transported to one of the most glorious periods in country music history.  And to heighten their listening experience, an interactive website has been specially designed to immerse fans personally in the sights and styles of those turbulent times.
Bakersfield is Gill and steel-guitarist Franklin’s tribute to the early music of Buck Owens and Merle Haggard, both of whom fashioned their distinctive sounds while playing the clubs and honky tonks of Bakersfield, California.
Unlike the more sedate sounds then spinning out of Nashville, West Coast country music tended to be raw, urgent, amplified and unfiltered.

R.I.P
Singer-songwriter Nick Nixon passed away on July 30th Tuesday afternoon from a lung disease.
Born in Poplar Bluff, he later moved to the St. Louis area and burst on the country music scene in the 1960's.
He signed with Mercury Records in the 70's and scored more than a dozen top 100 hits.
As a 70's performer he played all over the United States at top fairs, entertainment parks, rodeos, concerts and nightclubs. Nick’s voice had been described as a cross between Charlie Pride, David Wills, and a little Moe Bandy on the side (Nick Nixon sings "One In A Million" during taping a TV show). He co-wrote “The Teddy Bear Song,” with Don Earl. It was first million-seller for another St. Louis native, Barbara Fairchild (Live video). The single was from her 1972 album, "A Sweeter Love". It was released on Columbia and was produced by Jerry Crutchfield and topped the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart as well as reaching #1 on the Canadian Country Singles Chart. "The Teddy Bear Song" was nominated for the 1974 Grammy Award for Best Country Vocal Performance by a Female. It was also recorded by Tanya Tucker on her 1973 album What's Your Mama's Name.

Nixon leaves behind his wife, Kim and five children. He was 74.
