Legal action
threat over Garth Brooks concerts: A
nearly five-year-old agreement to host no more than three yearly concerts at
Croke Park in Dublin
is at the center of a debate over the five Garth
Brooks shows scheduled for July. Residents living near the stadium are upset
that a written agreement is being ignored. And there’s indication they plan to
take their protest further. According to the Irish Times, a meeting between
residents and the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) turned ugly this week. The
five Brooks shows were sold before a license was granted, but promoters have 10
weeks to turn in that application. The Evening Herald reports residents have five
weeks after that to protest.

- Can you imagine hearing Katy Perry
singing "Follow Your Arrow" instead of Kacey
Musgraves? It turns out Kacey almost co-wrote that song with Katy
for possible inclusion on the pop star's latest album, PRISM. Says Kacey,
"When I played the idea, Katy said, ‘That sounds like something you’d really be great at. I think you
should keep it for yourself.’ I’m really glad I did."
- Miranda Lambert's new, nostalgic single, "Automatic," brings back memories of her simple
childhood back home in Texas. She says, "It’s about slowing down and remembering to take a breath, and what
it’s like to be a little bit more simple, and not really about changing
and going back there, but just reminiscing about what it was like."
The song's references to using a laundry line to dry clothes and learning
to drive her '55 Chevy help Miranda keep from stressing out with her
day-to-day work demands. She explains, "When I hear it, it reminds me to take a deep breath and think
about those good memories and try to instill them in my hectic life right
now.”

out of nowhere, a male fan — desperate to make contact with Swift —

UK Music Sales for 2013
Rock music overtook Pop in
UK album sales in 2013 year, winning a bigger share of the market for the first
time in five years.
Rod Stewart's Time was the best-selling album to be
classified as rock by the Official Charts Company, followed by Arctic Monkeys
and Bastille. In total rock accounted for 33.8% of album sales, compared with
31% for pop, said industry body the BPI.
However, Pop records still held the lead in
single sales.
Some 36.2% of all single track sales were classed as pop,
led by the likes of Katy Perry, Pink and Ellie Goulding.
The biggest hits
of last year were out-and-out pop songs: Daft Punk's Get Lucky and Robin
Thicke's Blurred Lines; while the biggest-selling album was Emeli Sande's
brazenly mainstream Our Version Of Events.
Rock's resurgence
is helped by the Chart Company's rather woolly definition - which includes
Mumford and Sons (surely a folk-pop band) and Rod Stewart (better suited to the
MOR category).
MOR/Easy Listening was responsible for 8.1% of album sales, buoyed by
big-selling releases from Robbie Williams and Michael Buble. But R&B dropped to its lowest share
since 1995 with 5.7%, while hip-hop
accounted for 3.6% of album sales.
Speciality genres
– So what
about COUNTRY MUSIC ?
Heading the ‘Speciality’ genres is Classical music, which remains steady at 3.2 per cent of the albums market, ahead of Country (1.7 per cent), Jazz (1.3 per cent), Folk (1.2 per cent) and Blues (0.9 per cent). Reggae has a 0.7 per cent share of albums sales, with the remainder of the list made up by Children’s (0.2 per cent), World Music (0.2 per cent), Spoken Word (0.1 per cent) and New Age (0.1 per cent).
Country music’s share of 1.7 per
cent (up 0.2% on 2012) of the Album
market = 1.6
million albums (Physical + Digital)
Country music’s share of 0.5 per cent (No change on 2012) of the Singles market = 911,000 sales
Country music’s share of 1.3 per cent (up 0.4% on 2012) of the Compilations market

BPI report here [PDF file]
- Across all music genres physical and
digital, UK album unit sales declined
6.4% to 94 million last year. It was
the first year since the early 1980s that no album sold a million copies.
- Single sales
dropped for the first time in recent history by 3.4% to 182.2m
(Annual revenue generated was down 1.6% to £167.8m)
- Albums market
dropped 3.6% to £772.1m
- Sales of CD albums were down sharply yet again, by 12.8%.
- A BPI survey also shows that more of
us now want our music-related gifts
to come in digital form. When asked
which formats they would like their music-related gifts to be on, up to 25%
selected digital among their choices - either as download credits (19%),
such as through an iTunes voucher, or as a subscription to a streaming
service (6%) such as Spotify and Deezer.
iTunes does not
always represent a perfect gauge of an album’s performance in the overall
marketplace. However 2013's
American Idol Winner Candice Glover
better hope this is one of the digital retailer’s
rare off weeks.
Millions of
Americans watched for months but Candice's debut album “Music Speaks” had only ascended to
#8 on the iTunes Album Sales Chart. As a point of weekly comparison, Bronwood,
GA country artist Cole Swindell’s self-titled debut, which also hit shelves
Tuesday, is already #1 on US iTunes.
Responsible for
only 39,000 sales in its opening week, Lee DeWyze’s “Live it Up” currently
represents the weakest debut offering by an “American Idol” winner (post-victory).
Phillip Phillips’ “The World from the Side of the Moon” and Scotty McCreery’s “Clear as Day,” the
last two debut releases from “Idol” winners, moved 169,000 and 197,000 first
week copies, respectively.
Glover’s
Pop/R&B coronation song “I Am Beautiful” (19 Recordings) sold only 48,291
copies in the week following the show’s finale. Co-written by Joleen Belle and
Jaden Michaels, “I Am Beautiful” made a debut at No.39 on Hot Digital Songs and
entered the Hot 100 at No.94. It was the lowest chart debut ever for a coronation
song by an Idol winner. It represented the lowest first-week sales tally for
the coronation song by an Idol winner since Taylor Hicks’ “Do I Make You Proud”
started with sales of 38K back in 2006.
Phillip Phillips’
“Home” started with sales of 278K copies in 2012 (52 week total of 4,489,265). Other
first week Idol sales include Scotty McCreery’s “I Love You This Big”
(171,000), Lauren Alaina’s “Like My Mother Does” (122,000) and Carrie Underwood with “Inside Your
Heaven” (171,000).
Kree Harrison the American Idol finalist and runner up in 2013 made
her Digital country bow at No.22 with her debut single “All Cried Out”. It also
bombed with sales of just 24,325 and quickly disappeared. It peaked briefly at
#34 on Hot Country Songs and no album has so far materialized.
Watch Keith Urban
on Wednesday (2/19) and Thursday (2/20) on American
Idol (Season 13) on FOX TV. For UK viewers it can be seen on Channel 5 on Sat and Sun Feb 22nd &
23rd at 5:00pm (CH131 Freesat) who have officially secured the UK broadcast
rights.

CMA Close Up by David Scarlett:
Eric Church Looks Inside The
Outsiders….Extract: Eric Church has spent nearly two hours in an old
church-turned-recording studio in East Nashville, playing his new album, The
Outsiders, for a group of
Nashville media
reps gathered to hear his latest offering. And when the listening session ends,
the sense of satisfaction and, yes, pride that Church exudes as he answers
questions about the project is undeniable. And justified.........“When I make
albums, I want to lay my head on the pillow 20 years from now and not regret
one thing,” he noted. “I want to have
stayed true to my musical and moral compass, because that’s what I trust,
regardless of what’s popular or whether you get rich or famous. It’s about
looking back and being proud of the work you’ve left behind. “I may be the most
rock ‘n’ roll-influenced artist in the format,” Church concluded. “I’ll admit I love to listen to Pantera. But
I revere Country Music. I don’t just do it. I revere it. And I want to make
albums to put up on the Country Music shelf with all the Country records I
revere and go, ‘This is what we did.’”

Telegraph UK (Rating; 3 STARS) Taylor Swift, O2 Extract: Taylor Swift's exuberant stage show
drowned out the simplicity of her appeal, says Alice Vincent.....Swift did not
whoop or leap, she bowed slowly and spun with grace from within countless
subtly rhinestone-covered outfits.
An accomplished multi-instrumentalist, she was at her best when she accompanied herself: on a banjo to play her double-platinum country hit, Mean, 2011’s adolescent backchat ode to bullies; on piano for Red’s poignant ballad All Too Well...Alas, this simplicity was lost in an overproduced show.
Her voice disappeared among the gothic castles, bucking violinists, clowns on stilts and a chorus of 1930s paparazzi for Lucky, which was so similar in sentiment and styling to Britney Spears’ 2000 release of the same name that it must have been an homage. The set-up for her performance of Trouble replayed her show-stealing 2013 Brit Awards turn, but the onstage costume change and raunchy dancing had lost its shock factor. Suffolk singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran popped up to join Swift on an underwhelming rendition of his own song, Lego House – although the duet drove the pubescent crowd to near-hysteria. COUNTRY GOSSIP
Trick Pony are back together having broke up seven years ago.
Comprising Heidi Newfield, Keith Burns and Ira Dean, they say they will have a
record out this year and a tour
Back in January,
Olympic athlete Nick Goepper briefly
met Taylor Swift on the red carpet
at the Golden Globe Awards. Well, now
that he's a medal winner, he's gotten up the nerve to ask her an important question. The
19-year-old, who just won a bronze medal at the Winter Olympics in the Men's
Slopestyle event, posed for a photo that NBC's Olympic Twitter feed posted on
Friday. It shows him with his medal around his neck, holding up a sign that
says, "Taylor
Swift, will you be my valentine?"
So far, Taylor
hasn't responded; she's more focused on Olympic skater Gracie Gold, tweeting
about checking the schedule so she can watch her skate. But others have taken
to Twitter to warn Goepper against getting involved with Ms. I Knew You Were
Trouble.
Garth Brooks won in a 3-Day Court Trial: A jury of four men and three women deliberated for an hour before deciding Garth won. His former employee Lisa Sanderson has to pay him $226,000 plus interest for six years, legal fees and collection costs.
A sinkhole
under the National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, KY broke Brad Paisley’s heart because it swallowed eight Corvettes in a hole 40 ft
wide by 30 ft deep of which he owns two.
Carrie Underwood is prepared to get dirty..... when she works at an
animal shelter. The 'Blown Away' singer revealed: "I went to my parents a few weeks ago and spent two days cleaning out
some pretty messy pens at an animal shelter, Happy Paws. It was long and
gruelling, but the people that run the shelter are wonderful."
TWEETS
taylorswift London, I could never thank you enough. See you next
time! PS: short hair, don't care. (!
Yes Taylor
celebrate the end of her RED tour on Tuesday by cutting off her long locks, in
front of dozens of people.
Taylor posted a Instagram photo showing her, with her hair
now a shoulder-length bob -- hugging British singer Ellie Goulding.
So, for now, no
more impressive hair-whipping while performing her song "All Too
Well"
Tamara Stewart I feel proud to have met a woman that inspired the

Last night I got
