Billboard 200 chart measures multi-metric album consumption, which includes
traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent
albums (SEA).
NF Scores
First No. 1 Album on Billboard 200 Chart With 'Perception'
Rapper
NF notched his first No. 1 album on the Billboard
Top 200 Album Chart (BB200) -- and first top 10 -- as his third full-length
studio album, PERCEPTION, debuts atop the list. The set was released on Oct. 6
through NF Real Music/Capitol/Caroline and starts with 55,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending Oct. 12,
according to Nielsen Music. Of that sum, 37,968 were in traditional album sales -- NF’s best sales week yet.
Twenty-six-year-old
NF (real name Nate Feuerstein) tops the list following initial industry
forecasts suggesting he was vying for No. 1 with an estimated start of 50,000
alongside Tom Petty and The
Heartbreakers’ Greatest Hits and Lil Pump’s debut self-titled album. NF
comes out on top by a sizable gap ahead of Petty at No. 2 (55,000 vs. 47,000)
thanks to better-than-expected sales for Perception, aided in part by
direct-to-consumer offers via NF’s official website.
Kane Brown with his SELF-TITLED album also hit a new peak
on the new Billboard 200, following its deluxe
reissue on Oct. 6. The set zooms 56-5
with 43,000 units (up 332%) and 25,672 in traditional album sales
(up 1,163%). The LP -- which initially debuted and peaked at No. 10 on the Dec.
24, 2016-dated list with 51,000 units -- was reissued on Oct. 6 with a handful
of bonus tracks.
Top
Country Albums now ranks the most popular country albums of the week, as
compiled by Nielsen Music, based on multi-metric consumption (blending traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA), and streaming equivalent albums (SEA)).
10 digital track sales from an
album = 1 track equivalent album (TEA)
“sale”
1,500 on demand song streams from

Nielsen’s sales data.
Kane Brown
Makes Chart History
For
the first time, an artist reigns simultaneously
on all five of Billboard’s main country charts, as Kane Brown led
the Top Country Albums, Hot Country Songs, Country Airplay, Country
Digital Song Sales and Country
Streaming Songs (Chart) lists dated Oct. 28.
“I’ve had a good-size fan base for a while,”
Brown, who first built a strong social following, told Billboard. “Now that I’m
with RCA, they were able to get radio onboard and it’s just really awesome to
see their support and ‘What Ifs’ going to No. 1.”
Brown
says that the song was not originally intended to be a duet, but once it was, Lauren Alaina was
the clear choice. The two have a long history that goes back to their singing
in seventh-grade choir together.
“Yeah,
we were the awkward kids,” says Brown, laughing. “Once we decided on adding a
woman to ‘What Ifs,’ I knew that I wanted Lauren to sing it, and, of course,
she killed it.”
The
song paces Country Streaming Songs for a second frame, increasing 7% to 11
million U.S. streams. It’s the first hit to command at least three charts since
Keith Urban’s “Blue Ain’t Your Color” dominated all four Billboard song charts
(Hot Country Songs, Country Airplay, Country Digital Song Sales and Country
Streaming Songs) dated Jan. 21. Brown.
After
the release of the deluxe edition of
his self-titled debut album on Oct.6, the set surges by 332% to 43,000
equivalent album units (25,672 in pure sales) in the week ending Oct. 12 and jumped 5-1 on Top Country Albums for its
second week at the summit. The LP debuted atop the Dec. 24, 2016, chart (with 45,457 copies sold; #10 Billboard
200; #1 Country). It’s also the largest gainer of the week on the all-genre
Billboard 200, roaring 56-5.
Kane
Brown’s deluxe edition includes four new songs: “Setting the Night on Fire” (with Chris Young), “What’s Mine Is Yours,” “Found You” and “Heaven.” The latter song grants Brown his accomplishment of being
the first artist to score his five-fold
Billboard chart command.
Following
“What Ifs,” “Heaven” marks Brown’s second Hot Country Songs top 10.
The
Chattanooga, Tenn., native (who will turn 24 on Oct. 21) self-released the EP CLOSER, which debuted at No. 22 on the
Top Country Albums chart dated June 20, 2015 (3,200 copies sold), and peaked at No. 7 that November (hitting a weekly
sales high of 8,000).
Signed
in early 2016 thanks in part to his robust social following, he followed with
his Zone 4/RCA Nashville debut with his EP Chapter
1, which debuted and peaked at No. 3 (#9 Billboard 200) on April 9, 2016 (21,941 copies sold).
Former
No.1 Thomas Rhett with LIFE
CHANGES (Valory/Big Machine Label Group) held at #2 (#16-22 Billboard 200) selling 6,841 copies (down 26%; 5-week total 143,400).

copies (down 90%; 2-week total 147,867). This drop was due to the
loss of pre-orders and Internet ticket bundling tour offers. Her first week US sales of 134,268 album sales
comprised 115,211 Non-traditional (ticket bundle purchases + others) and 21,224
Digital Albums. Twain's 'Now' posted the largest second week percentage
sales drop for a #1 debuting female album (-90%). NOW declined to less than
5,000 in Canada, slated to be a 94%+
drop, after selling 72,000 copies in its first week, additionally, song sales
and on-demand streams generated 73,000 consumption units.
In the UK it
fell 1-11 selling 5,700 copies (down 72%; 2-week total of 25,800) and in Australia (1-5) second week sales were 2,030

The hot new also landed at No.3 on the Independent Albums
Chart. Donahew worked with acclaimed producer Josh Leo (Love & Theft,
Timothy B. Schmit and Alabama, among others) on this latest project, marking
the first time he has engaged an outside producer. The new
collection contains fifteen of Donahew’s biggest songs and a new recording of
the Matchbox 20 hit,”3 A.M.,” which Donahew has performed live for years. Donahew also
offered up a limited edition of this new recording on vinyl and CD, as well as
a DVD of a new documentary recapping his career so far. www.caseydonahew.com
In
just over 10 years, Casey Donahew has risen from being a favourite on the local
Texas music scene to a nationally popular touring act who has racked up 13 No.

released four independent albums to critical and commercial acclaim. His 2011

Dream,” “Let’s Not Say Goodbye Again,” and “One Star Flag.” Casey’s STANDOFF (13,099 copies debut sales; No.7

FALLING
SHORT of Top 50:
On the Country Album Sales list (pure sales;
old methodology)
Alabama with the 15 track AMERICAN CHRISTMAS (BMG Rights Management; Amazon UK
- Amazon.com) made a debut at No.16 selling 2,000 copies. It also landed at No.2 entry on Holiday Album Sales Chart.
It marks their
first since 1996's Christmas, Vol II. The Country Music Hall of Famers’ holiday
album includes standards “Away In A Manger,” “Go
Tell It On The Mountain,” “Silent Night” and “Jingle
Bells,” along with the Alabama classic “Christmas In Dixie” and
four new songs.
Bradley Walker with his 13 track release BLESSED: HYMNS AND SONGS OF FAITH (Universal
Music Digital Services; Amazon UK - UK iTunes - Amazon.com)
made a bow at No.22 selling 1,800 copies. It also landed a No.2 entry on the Bluegrass
Albums Chart.
Jerrod Niemann with 13-track set THIS RIDE (Curb Records; Amazon UK
- Amazon.com ) made a debut at No.28 selling 1,400 copies
Niemann
co-produced his fourth studio album with Jimmie Lee Sloas and it features
guests Diamond Rio and Lee Brice. Songs on the project include “God Made A Woman,” “But I Do” and “I Got This.”
Roughstock
(Rating: Positive) …It’s been an
interesting ride for Jerrod Niemann so far in his career. After a three album
spell with Sea Gayle Records/Arista Nashville, Niemann joined the rejuvenated
Curb Records last year and instantly got to work on the album we have
here,
This Ride. Once again working with session ace Jimmy Lee Sloas as his
co-producer, Jerrod blends the traditions he has an encyclopedic knowledge of
with the sounds that make the album wholly modern in sonic scope without
sacrificing the history of country music....Paired with single “God Made A
Woman,” we have perhaps the most ‘traditional’ songs on the record but closer
and title track “This Ride” feels like the most-important song on the album....And
that’s what’s great about This Ride. It’s a cohesive collection of country
music circa 2017. There are sounds which are more modern than others but
nothing feels outta place here. The songs all play a part in making the album a
complete work, the kind of work we’ve been waiting to hear from Jerrod Niemann
and clearly the best release of his career to date.

Canadian
singer-songwriter Whitney Rose with
11 track RULE 62 (Six Shooter/Thirty
Tigers; Amazon UK - Amazon.com)
opened with sales of 400 copies.
Critical
reception for:
Saving Country Music (Rating: 1 3/4 Guns Up (7.5/10) - Whitney Rose could be a candidate for one of these throwback
ultra-stylized mod classic country fashion plates with her beehive haircuts and
vintage hot pants and short skirts. Don’t think I’m complaining about her
fashion sense; I’m a man with a beating pulse no different as any, and
predisposed to find favor with how old clothes denote old souls. But you don’t
watch a record, and Whitney
Rose elevates herself by writing and selecting
songs that do what all the best classic country artists did: say something in a
way that’s never been said before, giving perspective to universal emotions and
moments, and making you feel something deeper than simple nostalgia...Whitney
Rose and Rule 62 don’t adhere as much to genre as they do to era. The heart is
definitely classic country, and the writing of songs like “Tied To The Wheel”
and “Trucker’s Funeral” reinforce that, and are also cool to hear coming from
the female perspective, when most trucker and travel songs in country have for
too long been the realm of the men. But Whitney is also willing to get a little
jangly and classic rock and roll in songs like “Can’t Stop Shaking” and “You’re
A Mess.” Having Raul Malo on board, who is so fluent in the era Whitney looks
to evoke, as well as players who understand the textures of this time period,
make the transitions feel fluid and organic....Whitney Rose’s Rule 62 (which by
the way is “Don’t Take Yourself Too Damn Seriously”), is fun and fashionable in
that throwback sort of way that’s the rage of independent roots circles at the
moment, while also being bolstered by quality songwriting framed within a
vintage era that still appeals to the modern perspective.
Paste Magazine (Rating: 8.3/10) ..Not
surprisingly then, the album finds Rose continuing to sow the seeds of the
Americana mindset as plied from its roots. The songs, all of which Rose wrote
except for two, have a timeless quality—the gentle sway of “You Don’t Scare
Me,” the lilting “Tied to the Wheel,” the resilient resolve of “Arizona,” the
sturdy swagger of “Can’t Stop Shakin’” all being prime examples. Each sounds
like a standard even on first listen. A poignant ballad like “Trucker’s
Funeral” resonates as if it came from the pen of Kris Kristofferson. “Wake Me
In Wyoming” is something Tammy Wynette might have sung while pouring her tears
into a beer. Like Malo, Rose has acquired a deft talent for penning timeless
material, one reason perhaps that the two found such an ideal fit.
