(5 Jan 2018)
(5 Jan 2018)
The Voice UK, in its 8th series, returned to ITV screens for the 2019 series with a host of artists hoping the
judges will turn their chairs.
The
swivel chairs were back (9 acts in 95 minutes; 5.3 million viewers on ITV), to take BBC's new arrival The Greatest
Dancer’s (4.6 million viewers) sliding wall in yet another Saturday night
talent show battle, with both airing at 8pm.
Olly
Murs, Sir Tom Jones, Jennifer Hudson and will.i.am take their seats in the
iconic red chairs in a search for a singing superstar as the blind
auditions begin!
PETER DONEGAN
London based 35-year old auditionee Peter Donegan told viewers " I live at home with my wife Alina (cosmetician and beautician) and 3.1/2-year old son Eric! We've been together now 9-years and met on Facebook, it's probably brilliant. I grew up around music quite naturally as my Dad was Lonnie Donegan. I'm here today because I want to support my family finally what I love doing. I want to make my name in my own right whilst still paying homage to Dad"
The
son of the late pioneering Sixties star Lonnie
Donegan (MBE; 29 April 1931 born Glasgow – 3 November 2002), used to tour
as his father’s piano player and performed with one of the King of Skiffle’s
old guitars.
Peter
Donegan performed a cover of Rascal Flatts 'Bless The Broken Road' (#1 Hot
Country Songs Feb 12, 2005) in week 1 of The Voice UK 2019 Blind Auditions!
Sir Tom Jones (#TeamTom), in a magical twist, was impressed enough
by his tone and higher range to hit the big red button and turn as Lonnie's
widow Sharon shed a tear waiting in the wings whilst punching the air with
delight.
YouTube
user Skye Stanley wrote "Wow he is
so good at singing watch him on tv then searched him on YouTube and it was
amazing to watch him sing the song his father wrote for Tom with Tom amazing
can not wait to see how far he goes Tom is the best for him they can also talk
about his father together I think they will build a perfect bond with each
other"
When
78-year old Sir Tom Jones heard Peter’s surname, he casually asked: “Any
relation to Lonnie?” and was astonished by the answer – especially as Donegan
Senior co-wrote Jones’s 1967 #2 UK hit single "I’ll Never Fall in Love Again"
(writers Lonnie Donegan and Jimmy Currie; first released by Donegan as a single
in 1962) ,and the pair were friends who played gigs together. Lonnie and family
got to go to Disneyland on the proceeds!
Veteran
pro Sir Tom and 35-year-old Peter promptly teamed up an impromptu duet,
exchanging emotional looks across the stage as they did so.

A third said: "I wish I'd put a bet on Tom saying exactly this!! So, set up! I knew he was going to say "no relation to Lonnie?" etc and "I used to sing with your father" Fix. The other guy sounded better."#thevoiceuk— Katharine Zoe Ruth (@Graelwyn) 6 January 2019
Just a personal opinion but I don't think those who are already performing professionally should be permitted to audition. They already have made it. It seems unfair to those for whom this is their first experience with a large audience.
ABOUT Peter Donegan
Almost
inevitably, Peter Donegan has been performing since the age of five, given that
the ‘Godfather of British Rock n Roll’, ‘King Of Skiffle’, the late Lonnie Donegan, is his father. Lonnie
inspired every British Invasion band from The Beatles to Led Zeppelin. Even The
White Stripes’ Jack White cites Lonnie as one of his major influences. All this
runs through Peter’s veins and is clearly evident in his live performances, as
well as in the studio. Amongst Peters own admirers are Nora Guthrie (daughter
of seminal folk musician, Woody Guthrie) Crystal Gayle and Billy Bragg.
Peter
was unintentionally born in London as his Dad Lonnie was still on tour when his
mother (Lonnie's then Manager) went into labour early, although the family were
actually living in California where it was intended that he would be born.
Peter was raised in Lake Tahoe, California then between Orlando, Florida and
Malaga, Spain where the family spent quite some time.
Primarily
a singer/songwriter and piano player, Peter picked up the acoustic guitar after
his Dad passed away in 2002 and taught himself to play the mandolin, harmonica,
banjo and ukulele.
Peter
formed the Peter Donegan Band with his brother David.
No
surprise then, from all this, that Peter loves Country music so much and
considers himself a true British-American hybrid.

THE VOICE HISTORY
EMMA JADE (GARBUTT):
As
an unsigned 19 year old country/pop artist from Doncaster she appeared as a
contestant on 'BBC The Voice UK' after being chosen to join Sir Tom Jones' 2013 team (BBC Page) after performing a cover of Guns N' Roses' "Sweet Child o' Mine" on Series 2 Episode
2 broadcast on 6 April 2013. Unfortunately Emma Jade left the competition at
the third battle round stages episode aired on 25 May,2013 pitched
against Mike Ward (cousin of British The X Factor series 2
winner Shayne Ward) performing Stevie Nicks' song "Landslide" (also cut by The Dixie Chicks).
Emma somewhat faded away and didn’t have the
finances to produce some high-tech videos or record any music. She was one of
27 names to appear on the Pop-Up Stages at C2C Country to Country at The O2 in
March 2014 – See Blog Post.
She came back strongly in 2018 with her excellent 4-track EP OLDER NOW (Amazon UK - UK iTunes) released on Fri Aug 19, 2018. It debuted at #5 on UK iTunes Country Albums and stayed top 10 on Sat Aug 11: #8 (#280 all-genres) before falling down the chart. It received 3.1/2 STARS in the September issue on Country Music People: actually sounds like a country singer, the production is sympathetic
In October she headed to Nashville and the Doncaster
singer songwriter even managed to get up on stage with Vince Gill and the Time
Jumpers. Watch the >> clip
Lyric Magazine’s James Daykin has named her in Lyrics Class of 2019 who describe her “charismatic and powerful performances”
and believe “we think she’s the UK’s
answer to Miranda Lambert with the vocal power of Carrie Underwood and we think
she’s going to have a great 2019”.
She is going back into the studio in 2019 to record a
second EP with a series of summer festival appearances and some high-profile
theatre shows to follow. She shares she has a “huge project happening”, the
details of which will be released in January 2019!
Later
in 2019 she is going out on tour in Texas later in the year with Live in the
Living Room.
LAURA OAKES:
Coming
from a big Liverpuddlian family where everyone can sing or play an instrument,
it was only a matter of time before Laura caught the music bug. Her mum was a
local celebrity playing in clubs and pubs throughout the 70’s and 80’s, but
fell ill 15 years ago - so it became Lauras turn to step into the spotlight.
The Voice 2013 Image |
Laura graduated
from Leeds College of Music in 2012 with a first degree in Popular Music.
As
a 22-year old Liverpool singer she was part of Team Danny after successfully convincing Danny O'Donoghue to turn after her cover of Florence and the
Machine’s 'Spectrum (Say My Name)' on Blind Auditions 4 on The Voice UK
2013.
She
went out in Battle Rounds on Series 2 when pitched against Abi Sampa whilst performing
Emeli Sandé’s 'Heaven' in May 2013 (Episode
3; 25 May).
Her first single 'Don't Let It Hit Ya', which was released in September 2013 and landed in the Top 20 on the iTunes Country Chart. Her second single 'Snakes & Ladders' (video aired on Sky/ Freesat on Keep It Country TV) followed in 2014 with similar success.
Laura played
shows supporting fellow country artists The Shires, Ward Thomas and Raintown
and performed at the C2C Country To Country Festival in 2015.
She released a self-titled EP (UK iTunes; June 2015) and received nominations in the Song Of The Year
category for Snakes & Ladders and Female Vocalist of the Year
from The British Country Music Awards and UKCountryRadio.com. Laura’s EP
Launch took place on June 25, 2015 at The Electric Carousel, London
compered by Radio2Country/ BBC London’s Baylen Leonard.
She has lent her voice singing harmony vocals on numerous Brit Country albums, produced by Justin Johnson and recorded at Parr Street Studios.
Laura Oakes won
the British Country Music Awards Female Vocalist of the Year in
2015 & 2016.
Laura played the
legendary Cavern Club for “Whispering Bob’s” Under The Apple Tree’s 60th
anniversary celebrations and at
the Buckle and
Boots 2017 Festival. She has also been the featured artist at a sell-out
Nashville Nights (Under The Bridge, London) event.
On Oct 27, 2017 she released single Glitter
(Acoustic; Amazon UK - UK iTunes ) reaching #160 on UK
Country iTunes chart. Her 5-track EP NASHVILLE
STOLE YOUR GIRL (Amazon UK - UK iTunes )
followed on Nov 24, 2017 which peaked at #3
on UK Country iTunes chart (#194 UK iTunes all-genres).
In
September 2018 she performed at The Long Road Festival where she was to open
for Carrie Underwood who sadly cancelled.
On Nov 30, 2018 she dropped a country’d
up version of "Groove Is in the Heart" (Single; iTunes) reaching
#50 UK Country iTunes Singles Chart. It was originally released in August 1990
and recorded by American dance band Deee-Lite.
As
part of Tom Jones' team singing
mostly country and western music he progressed as a finalist making the last
Final 4. He auditioned with the song "Don't Close Your Eyes"
from Keith Whitley, with three of the four judges, Jessie J, Danny O'Donoghue
and Sir Tom Jones turning their chairs. In the competition he sung "Suspicious
Minds" solo and "Green Green Grass of Home" with
Jones and was eventually eliminated at the final.
The then 31-year Romany wife and mum of three Talia took to The Voice stage and launched into her take of the Pistol Annie's "Hell On Heels". Just as Smith was finishing her blind auction Sir Tom Jones was convinced and rotated his chair to signify he was glad to be working with the singer/songwriter who was clearly thrilled by his belief.
Spreading pure 'Southern Love' under the name Talia Simone she moved towards an Americana, Vintage Lovin, Retro and Singer/Songwriter scene.
MIKE WARD:
As
a streetwise Salford 23-year-old country singer (born 14th Dec 1990) appeared
on The Series 2 of the Voice UK (broadcast on BBC 1 30 March 2013 – 22 June
2013). Ward is a distant cousin of British The X Factor winner Shayne
Ward. The then unemployed
joiner Ward (see BBC Profile), who
had Irish Traveller roots on his father's
side, nailed it, wowing the coaches on the BBC1 show when he auditioned, who we’re surprised he actually sung
country music. Coach Jessie J said
"He's not what you expect" >> Video
The Voice 2013 Image |
Battling
his shyness some were tipping him to be UK’s first big country artist. He
wanted to get country music noticed in the UK and bring it into the 21st
century. Could Mike be the man to make country music cool?
Country
Music People's David Allan (the former BBC Radio 2 Country
Club presenter) really praised his performances on The Voice in the magazine drawing
comparisons to George Jones and Keith Whitley. He spoke of his raw emotion and
his connected with people putting over the lyrics with his vocal delivery. In
the January 2014 issue of Country Music People David Allan shared his
disappointment as to why the media have seemingly ignored Ward
So,
what has happened post The Voice? Well Mike released "When I Was Your Man"
(Bruno Mars cover) on 22 June 2013 which briefly appeared at #60 and “Picking
Up the Pieces" (Paloma Faith) on 29 June 2013 which reached #72 on
the Official UK chart.
No
album emerged, and he did some local pub gigs and shared a few low budget
videos with fans.
In 2014 he was excited to be in the studio recording an album. He was joined by some great country musicians (Luke
Thomas and Simon Goulding) and USA producer/drummer Justin Johnson in
Liverpool at the Studio2 Parr Street Studios where some major pop albums have
been recorded (The Spice Girls, Take That, Echo and the Bunnymen, Oasis and
former owner Phil Collins).
Django
Promotions Lee Williams (CEO
of CMR Nashville/ CMR Hot "Europe's #1 Country Music Radio Station")
in 2013 signed Mike to management. On Friday 25th July 2014 there was a world
exclusive first play of his lead-off single "Welcome Home" promoted by Williams at UK internet station CMR
Nashville. The track was promoted on August 2014 Hotdisc and
reached the No.7 slot on the Hotdisc Top 40 and secured a 2-week No.1
British Hotdisc track overhauling a 3-week #1 from Charlie
Boston.
Over the course of the weekend
6th & 7th September 2014 the single made big strides from a lowly No.19 on
the UK iTunes Country Chart to No.3
by Sunday evening as his fans really got behind him (Taylor Swift’s “Shake It
Off” POP singles blocked his path to Nos 1 & 2). “Welcome Home” peaked
at #392 on the overall UK iTunes singles chart and shortly
after Ward’s single sank to No.118 on the country placings.
On
Sept 12, 2014 an EP arrived
made available from his website.
On Feb 25, 2015 he released a cover
of Keith Whitley song single “Don't Close Your Eyes” on iTunes and
then seemed to disappear from the music scene.
On 24 December 2014, Mike's
father Michael Ward was a victim of a hit
and run with his girlfriend (Paula Jolly) outside an ASDA store in Manchester.
Paula died at the scene and Michael died in hospital hours after. On Sept 6, 2015,
Ward became a father to a baby girl named Maisy Rose and in 2017 to a baby boy
named Charles Michael.
SAM
HOLLYMAN:
When only 15 years old Sam went on
stage with Michael Buble during this impromptu performance ("Singing with a Fan Live")
and Sam's distinctive voice was noticed by a large global audience. The video
of Sam singing with Buble has received over 22 million views. As a talented up
and coming British singer/songwriter he had a 3-week #1
on the Hotdisc British & Irish Chart with
his single “Where I Wanna Be”.
He >> failed
to win over the judges on The Voice in April 2013. The then 17-year old
“Stafford singing sensation” fell at the first hurdle in the TV talent show when judges Jessie J, Will.i.am, Sir Tom
Jones and Danny O’Donoghue didn’t warm to his rendition of Elton John’s ‘Your Song’.
Producer/drummer and former British Country Music
Association musician of the year Justin Johnson, a native of the Pacific Northwest
in America (www.jroom3.co.uk), who was based in Stoke-On-Trent, worked on the
first single from Sam's album "THE
RED REEL SESSIONS" which dropped late August 2013. Since then he has
kept a low profile playing open mics and selective gigs and believed to have
concentrated on his studies. www.facebook.com/samhollymanmusic (20,359 Likes).
TALIA
SMITH:
She was part of the vibrant Travellin Rose female duo with
Kelly Lee and they recorded a 12-track album titled
CINDERELLA DREAMING. Their first
single “Made Up My Mind,” debuted on the Hotdisc Top 40 chart on Dec 11,
2011 at # 2 and on Dec 18th they topped the Hotdisc British and Irish
chart .
As a solo artist Talia appeared on The Voice UK
2014 on Saturday Feb 15, 2014.
Ahead of her Voice debut performance Smith spoke of her passion for country music, a wish to move to Music City USA whist remaining loyal to her roots –“You can take the girl out of the trailer but you can’t take the trailer out of the girl!”

WAYNE JACOBS
Talking about his inspirations for penning songs, a few years ago Wayne revealed that the BBC headhunted him, emailed and phoned him when The Voice UK were looking for country singers!
Wayne performed his BBC audition song "Bless the Broken Road" a big hit for Rascal Flatts (see Peter Donegan above). Wayne said the song brought out his “Buddy Holly range”. Wayne failed to get through to part B on the auditions out of apparently 1000’s and never got near the live TV stages.
This is how he would have sounded!
Jacobs workin’ his way up the country ladder had taken voice lessons (probably to perfect the American twang), in order to match his American influenced lyrics and please his friends across the pond.

Wayne is now a 7-time winner of UKCountryRadio.com Listeners Club Song Award (2012-2018).
He totaled the most votes via the online vote added to the voting cards on the evening at the UK Country Awards in September for his song “Signs Of Love” (* performed by Ronnie Kimball).
Wayne has built a 13,000 online fanbase over 12 years on Reverbnation that vote for him, those votes were added to the voting cards on the night. “Everybody seems to like the songs I write” said Wayne.

Artists (each coach gets 10 slots) will progress to the second stage, 'Battle phase', where two artists are
mentored and then developed by their respective coach. The coaches of the team
