Taylor
Swift’s new album, LOVER,
blasted in at No.1 on the Billboard Top 200 Album Chart (BB200) with the
biggest week for any album since her last release, Reputation, in 2017.
Lover
earned 867,000 equivalent album units in the U.S. in the week ending Aug. 29,
according to Nielsen Music (13,000 were in TEA units and 175,000 were in SEA
units. The latter figure translates to 226 million on-demand audio streams
earned for the album’s songs during its release week).
Of
that sum, 679,000
were in album
sales. Both figures are the largest registered for any album in a single week
since Swift’s REPUTATION debuted with 1.238 million units in its
first week, of which 1.216 million were in album sales (in the week ending Nov. 16, 2017).
In
total, Lover begins with 867,000 equivalent album units earned, of which
679,000 were in album sales; 13,000 were in TEA units and 175,000 were in SEA
units. The latter figure translates to 226 million on-demand audio streams
earned for the album’s songs during its release week.
Aiding
Lover’s first week: the set’s release in four collectible deluxe CD editions
at Target, as well as dozens of merchandise/digital album bundles sold through
Swift’s official website. The album also had a standard CD edition that was
available widely at retail, along with an equivalent digital album that was
available via all digital retailers.
Comparably,
the REPUTATION album was supported by two deluxe editions available exclusively
at Target, and a standard CD and digital edition. Notably, during reputation’s
first week, its digital edition was exclusively sold via the Apple iTunes
Store. It became widely available via all digital retailers in its second week.
Further, reputation’s sales were also likely goosed by fan participation in the
Taylor Swift Tix powered by Ticketmaster Verified Fan program, where the
purchase of an album would help secure greater access to tickets for Swift’s
then-upcoming reputation stadium tour. (Swift has announced no plans to tour in
support of Lover.)
In
addition, Lover is Swift’s first album to be available to stream in full
across all streaming services in its first week. Reputation was not
available to stream in full during its debut week -- just four pre-release
tracks were streamable.
Taylor
becomes the first woman to have six different albums each sell at least
500,000 copies in a single week. (The only other act to do so is Eminem.)
Swift previously managed the half-million one-week sales feat with the debut
weeks of her last five full-length studio albums: REPUTATION (1.216 million, in 2017), 1989 (1.287 million, 2014), RED (1.208 million, 2012), SPEAK NOW (1.047 million, 2010) and FEARLESS
(592,000; 2008). Swift also remains
the only act to have four different albums each sell a million copies in a
single week.
SIGN
OF THE STREAMING TIMES: That said, Lover’s large sales debut is an anomaly, as overall
album sales continue to erode in the U.S., as more fans opt to consume
music via streaming services. So far in 2019, through Aug. 29, album sales
are down 19% (70 million sold year-to-date, as compared to 86.5 million
sold year-to-date in 2018). In total for the 2018 year, album sales fell 17.7%
to 141 million sold.
Of
Note: Lionel Richie's HELLO FROM LAS
VEGAS fell off the Billboard 200 after debuting the previous week at #2. It is the highest position from
which an album directly left the chart. Richie is also the first artist in
Artist 100 history (2014-present) to leave the Artist 100 from the #1 spot.
Top
Country Albums now ranks the most popular country albums of the week, as
compiled by Nielsen Music, based on multi-metric consumption (blending traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA), and streaming equivalent albums (SEA)).
10 digital track sales from an
album = 1 track equivalent album (TEA)
“sale”
1,500 on demand song streams from
an album to one streaming equivalent album (SEA) “sale”.
Nielsen
Music compiles the sales and streaming data. Billboard continues to publish pure album sales charts (subscription to
billboard biz ), exclusively comprising
Nielsen’s sales data.
Rockin'
Roll: Big Machine's Midland had
the top-selling country album this week with Let It Roll
Midland earned its first Top Country Albums No. 1 as its
sophomore LP, produced by Dann Huff, Shane McAnally and Josh Osborne, LET IT ROLL (Big Machine Label Group | Amazon UK - iTunes - Amazon.com), launched with 22,000 equivalent album units (#16
new Entry Billboard 200; 16,400 in album sales).
The trio — which consists
of Mark Wystrach, Jess Carson and Cameron Duddy — follows first album ON THE
ROCKS, which entered at its No. 2 peak in October 2017 (17,230 debut sales).
The set followed Midland’s self-titled EP (No. 38, June 2017). Roll’s first
single, “Mr. Lonely,” pushes 29-25 on Country Airplay (6.5 million, up 10%) and
39-31 on Hot Country Songs.
Critical reception:
Variety (Rating 81/100): Just about everything about “Let It Roll” is better than that first
album, which wasn’t bad, but which maybe was as interesting for what it
represented as the songs. ... And there are some great ones on “Let It Roll,”
whether they’re ‘70s, ‘80s and ‘90s pastiches or not.
AllMusic (Rating 3.1/2 STARS) It's a record that gets by on feel, not songs, which may mean that it
doesn't provide many distinguishing hooks, but it does sound awfully good as it
plays.

release, THE PREQUEL (River House/Columbia Nashville/ Sony Music

Tanya
Tucker with WHILE
I’M LIVIN’ (Fantasy Records | Amazon UK - iTunes - Amazon.com) arrived at No.8 on Top Country Albums (#68 New Entry Billboard 200; 10,000 units; 9,500 pure sales),
marking her 10th top 10 and first top 10 start. Produced by Brandi Carlile and
Shooter Jennings, the set is Tucker’s first top 10 since What Do I Do With Me, which
reached No. 6 in 1992. The new album is her first of all-new material since
Tanya, which peaked at No. 39 in 2002.
Tanya also marked her first-ever No. 1 album on
Nielsen’s Americana/Folk chart. Additionally, While
I’m Livin’ scored impressive debuts overseas
landing at No. 2 on the UK Country chart, No. 3 on the UK Americana chart and
No. 3 on the Top Country Albums chart in Canada. The Fantasy Records release is
the legendary country star’s first new material in 17 years. Watch the album

On Thursday, September 5th, Tucker and special guest Brandi Carlile made same day appearances on both the Today Show and The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon. In between, they will tape “Fierce: Women In Music” with Tanya Tucker and Brandi Carlile, a conversation and audience event hosted by Lori Majewski at SiriusXM's New York City studios. The event will be recorded and air in September on SiriusXM Volume channel 106.

Garnering accolades in the U.S. and internationally, While I’m Livin’ is
largely comprised of songs written by Carlile, the twins Tim and Phil
Hanseroth and Tucker. “It’s a musical
biography of sorts,” said Carlile, “about Tanya’s real life and the
places she’s seen, and it’s narrated by the greatest country and western singer
this side of Johnny Cash.”

Critical reception:
AllMusic (Rating: 80/100): Jennings
and Carlile also direct Tucker toward a few outside covers, including the
rousing "Hard Luck" and "The House That Built Me," a Tom
Douglas & Allen Shamblin song popularized by Miranda Lambert, that add
texture and deepen the emotional undercurrents flowing through the record. When
combined with the Carlile/Hanseroth originals, these tunes paint a portrait of
a mighty artist who has been through a lot but is fearless about the future.
Mojo (Rating 6/10): Tucker has created an
album that should endear her to those who still raise the outlaw flag while
also appealing to hard-edged pop-tinged rock believers. [Oct 2019, p.83]
Vince
Gill notched his 16th top 10 as 12-track OKIE (MCA Nashville/Universal Music Group Nashville | Amazon UK - iTunes - Amazon.com) bowed at No.9 (#71 New Entry Billboard 200; 10,000 units; 9,200 sold). The LP
is his first since Down to My Last Bad Habit, which debuted at its No. 4 peak
in March 2016 (17,088 copies; #35 Billboard 200 chart dated March 5, 2016)
Gill wrote or co-wrote all 12 songs, including focus tracks “A Letter To
My Mama” and “When My Amy Prays,” a song about his wife, singer/songwriter Amy
Grant.
Critical reception:
American Songwriter (Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars): But the exquisite Okie is
nonetheless filled with emotions he evidently needed to express, which makes it
an important entry in his bulging catalog and arguably his most intimate,
deeply felt release.
Sounds Like Nashville (Rating: Positive): Gill’s latest studio LP, Okie, his first in
three years, is yet another bullet point to fit under the “He Didn’t Have to Do
This But He Did Anyway” section of his bio. It’s an intensely personal
collection of songs, and it happens to be a sterling one at that. As is the
case with other master songwriters, such as Jason Isbell and Hayes Carll, Gill
uses some songs to intimately tell his own story while some songs are colorful
tales of fiction….Vince Gill certainly didn’t have to
record Okie for us to know he’s one of the greats. But because he did, we now
know his more intimately than we ever have before.

Justin Moore banked his
seventh No. 1 on Billboard’s Country Airplay chart as “The
Ones That Didn’t Make It Back Home” (Valory) rose 3-1 on the list dated
Sept. 7, up 7% to 40.8 million audience
impressions in the week ending Sept. 1, according to Nielsen Music.
Authored by Moore, Paul DiGiovanni, Chase McGill and Jeremy Stover,
“Home” is a tribute to fallen soldiers.
“I’m so thankful that country radio has provided this song a platform,”
Moore told Billboard. “It’s always special to enjoy a No. 1, but even more so
when it’s a song that impacts people’s lives in a positive way. Here’s to the
ones that didn’t make it back home.”
“Home” is the launch single from Moore’s fifth full-length, Late Nights
and Long Necks, which debuted at its No. 2 high on the Top Country Albums chart
dated Aug. 10, marking his fifth top 10.
With “Home,” Moore has mounted seven Country Airplay leaders among 10 top
10s. He first led in his second visit with “Small Town USA” in October 2009. He
followed with the No. 1s “If Heaven Wasn’t So Far Away” (July 2011), “Til My
Last Day” (January 2013), “Lettin’ the Night Roll” (July 2014), “You Look Like
I Need a Drink” (October 2016) and “Somebody Else Will” (September 2017).
Runaway June’s “Buy
My Own Drinks” (Wheelhouse) became the
all-female trio’s first Country Airplay top 10
as
it climbed 12-10 (21.7 million, up 2%). The song
is the first top 10 on the tally by an entirely female group since August 2005,
when SheDAISY’s “Don’t Worry ’Bout a Thing” hit No. 7.
The song continues momentum for the trio of Naomi Cooke, Hannah
Mulholland and Jennifer Wayne. Runaway June's debut LP BLUE ROSES launched at
No. 5 on Country Album Sales and No. 36 on Top Country Albums in July, while
the act's supporting role, with Maddie & Tae, on Carrie Underwood's
all-female-billed Cry Pretty Tour 360, which launched in May, runs through Oct.
31.
"It's a truly incredible feeling to be celebrating our first top
10," Cooke said. "We are overwhelmed. This has been such exciting
year: being on the road with Carrie and releasing our first album. It feels so
good to be able to swing open the door wider for female artists.

Kudos
to Jimmy Rector and the EMI Nashville reps on notching 54 adds for Eric Church’s “Monsters”. The song topped the "Most Added" board this chart
week.
The man The L.A. Times calls
“one of Nashville’s most forthright truth-tellers,” Eric
Church returns to Country radio with his reflective “Monsters,” the follow-up to recent No. 1 hit “Some Of It.”
Praised by Vulture for “turn[ing] a yarn about irrational childhood fears into an emboldening word about faith in the face of human cruelty,” the song celebrated by NPR for its “metaphors… broad enough to encapsulate an array of evils his listeners may imagine confronting” is the third single off Church’s critically-acclaimed Desperate Man.
“Anymore when a restless feelin’ keeps me up at night / Fallin’ on my knees is my new turnin’ on the light,” sings Church in the earnest chorus. “I keep my faith intact, make sure my prayers are said / ’Cause I’ve learned that the monsters ain’t the ones beneath the bed.”
As Entertainment Weekly notes, Church “believes in [music’s] power to heal, to transport you to the past, to make sense of the present and hold out hope for the future,” the full spectrum of which he accomplishes in this “blues-inflected tune contending with demons, real and imagined.”

Initially inspired by bedtime rituals with his two young sons, Church and
co-writer Jeff Hyde broadened the metaphor to encompass the adult fears and
worries that replace childhood monsters under the bed.
“A specific night, I can remember going in my oldest son Boone’s room… the dimmer wasn’t right, it wasn’t bright enough and he wanted it a brighter. And when I went in and made it a little brighter he said, ‘that’s good, that’s good, that’s perfect.’ And it wasn’t much… but that stuck with me that it’s kind of all he needed was just more light,” reflects Church. “It will always be a song that I think about where I was at that time in my life, where my kids were, and just how that little bit of light is what made the difference.”
“Monsters” comes on the heels of Church’s recently-announced CMA Award nominations, as he earned nods in three categories: Entertainer of the Year, Album of the Year (for Desperate Man, Producer: Jay Joyce) and Music Video of the Year (for “Some Of It,” Director: Reid Long).
