Billboard Top 200 / Country Album Chart News (Chart issue week of September 21, 2019)

The Billboard 200 chart measures multi-metric album consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA).

Post Malone Bundle In At No.1 on Billboard 200
Post Malone snared 2019’s second-biggest week for an album. Plus: Melanie Martinez and The Highwomen debut in top 10.
Post Malone charged in at No.1 on the Billboard Top 200 Album Chart (BB200) with Hollywood’s Bleeding. The set opened with 489,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending Sept. 12 in the U.S., according to Nielsen Music -- the second-biggest week of 2019 for any album. Of that total unit sum, 200,000 were in album sales.
Further, the album racked up 365.4 million on-demand audio streams for its tracks in its first week, delivering 2019’s biggest streaming week for an album.
Hollywood’s Bleeding is Post Malone’s second No. 1, following 2018’s beerbongs & bentleys, which debuted with 461,000 units (of which 153,000 were in album sales). The new album was released on Sept. 6 via Republic Records.
The new album’s sales were boosted by a concert ticket/album sale redemption offer with Post Malone’s tour, as well as an array of merchandise/album bundles sold via the artist’s official webstore.

All-star quartet The Highwomen saw their self-titled debut album bow at No.10 with 34,000 equivalent album units (with 29,000 of that sum in album sales). The four-member act comprises Brandi Carlile, Natalie Hemby, Maren Morris and Amanda Shires. Combined, the four performers have individually tallied 12 top 20-charting albums across the Top Country Albums and Americana/Folk Albums charts.

Billboard Top Country Albums (Chart issue week of September 21, 2019)
Top Country Albums now ranks the most popular country albums of the week, as compiled by Nielsen Music, based on multi-metric consumption (blending traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA), and streaming equivalent albums (SEA)).
10 digital track sales from an album = 1 track equivalent album (TEA) “sale”
1,500 on demand song streams from an album to one streaming equivalent album (SEA) “sale”.
Nielsen Music compiles the sales and streaming data. Billboard continues to publish pure album sales charts (subscription to billboard biz ), exclusively comprising Nielsen’s sales data.

The Highwomen (Low Country Sound/Elektra/EMG), the eponymous debut set from the supergroup comprising Brandi Carlile, Natalie Hemby, Maren Morris and Amanda Shires, debuted at No.1 on Top Country Albums with 34,000 equivalent album units earned (29,000 in album sales) in its first week.
The Dave Cobb-produced set also started atop Billboard’s Americana/Folk Albums chart and at No. 10 on the all-genre Billboard 200.
The Highwomen’s name is an homage to The Highwaymen, the ’80s/’90s assemblage of icons Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Kris Kristofferson and Willie Nelson.
The Highwomen is the first Top Country Albums No. 1 for an all-female group since Pistol Annies’ Interstate Gospel, which entered atop the Nov. 17, 2018, chart. Pistol Annies (Miranda Lambert, Ashley Monroe and Angaleena Presley) also mark the last all-female group to pace the list with a debut LP until The Highwomen, as their Hell on Heels zoomed in at the peak of the list dated Sept. 10, 2011.

Critical reception for The Highwomen:
12 Tracks Amazon UK - iTunes - Amazon.com

Variety (Rating: 95/100) If you believe there can be such a thing as an instant country classic, “The Highwomen” is that. ... The all-star foursome has put together an album full of high comedy and high pathos, zingy group-sings and gut-wreching solo turns, wryness and rue, and harmony co-existing with this strange and nearly forgotten thing called twang.

Paste Magazine (Rating: 8.9/10 ) While it’s absolutely and unapologetically meant as an addition to the discourse on inequality and lack of diversity that’s been ruling Nashville and country music (country radio in particular) for decades now, it’s also a country classic, no matter which way you spin it. The genre’s best talents, both men and women, have gathered, and they succeeded in creating a multi-generational, monumental music event.

Consequence of Sound (Rating: B+) Each voice is allowed to shine here, and through them, the voices of so many women who continually find themselves stifled in the country music format.

Rolling Stone (Rating: 4 STARS) What’s most impressive about The Highwomen, handsomely produced with Nashville neoclassicist Dave Cobb, is how artfully, and matter-of-factly, it engages social issues. Credit the concentration of songwriting talent. Every woman here is at the top of her game.

Pop Matters (Rating: 7/10) They're having a lot of fun, but the specifically feminist bent of the group's outlook helps focus the album as well. The Highwomen is worth a listen for any fans of these artists individually or as a sampler for all of them.

The Guardian (Rating: 3 STARS) As is so often the case with supergroups, it’s not always a complete success. The need to give the four principals a fair shake is fair enough, but when they are taking turns singing lead within the same song – as in Redesigning Women – it rather lessens the impact and the sense that the lyrics might be personal. .....Four voices aren’t always stronger than one, and the collegiate nature of the record leaves one yearning for a little more single-mindedness. But anyone who enjoyed, say, Margo Price’s All American Made will find much to enjoy here.

Roughstock (Rating: Mixed) The album is at its weakest whenever its songs are politically strident. The rewrite of “The Highwayman,” originally recorded by The Highwaymen (Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings and Kris Kristofferson), and simply titled “Highwomen,” lacks the power and personality of Jimmy Webb’s original. The feminist anthem, “Redesigning Women,” is little more than a cliched anthem. Even “Crowded Table,” which includes the wonderful Lori McKenna as one of its cowriters, pales in comparison to much of McKenna’s own solo material.....Had Highwomen just stuck to singing emotive country songs, as they do so well with this album’s second half, instead of trying too hard to make social statements (what happens with the album’s first half), this project could have been truly great, start to finish. As it is, though, it’s just half-great.

Luke Combs’ debut full-length, THIS ONE’S FOR YOU (River House/Columbia Nashville/Sony Music Nashville) slipped 1-2 (#19-26 Billboard 200). Additionally, Combs’ latest release, THE PREQUEL (River House/Columbia Nashville/ Sony Music Nashville) rose 7-6 (#59-58 BB200) in its 14th frame.

Dan + Shay with their self-titled album (Warner Bros./Warner Music Nashville) held at No.3 (#33-36 BB200) in their 64th frame.

All-vocal Country entertainers HOME FREE have a lot to celebrate – starting with their fifth studio album DIVE BAR SAINTS’ (Home Free Records | Amazon UK - iTunes ) making a top-notch Billboard debut – landing at #2 on the Country Album Sales Chart with 11,623 units of pure sales and taking the No.4 spot on the Top Country Albums Chart (#44 New Entry Billboard 200) – but the party doesn’t stop there.
In fact, it’s just the beginning for the quintet, who not only kickstarted their album release week with a performance on NBC’s
TODAY with Hoda and Jenna (Sept 4), but also brought their iconic harmonies to the Minnesota Vikings’ season opener, singing the national anthem prior to the Vikings’ defeat of the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday (Sept 8).

Morgan Wallen with IF I KNOW ME (Big Loud Digital EX) fell 4-5 (#53-50 BB200) in his 67th frame.
Chris Stapleton with the 228-week TRAVELLER (MERCURY/ UMGN) dropped 6-7 (#58-63 BB200).
Former 6-week non-consecutive week No.1 Jason Aldean with REARVIEW TOWN (Macon/Broken Bow Records) held at No.8 (#69-66 BB200) in his 74th week.

Sheryl Crow with THREADS (Valory/Big Machine Label Group | Amazon UK - iTunes - Amazon.com) fell 2-9 on Top Country Albums (#30-68 Billboard 200).

Former No.1 Kane Brown with sophomore album, entitled EXPERIMENT fell 9-10 (#76 non-mover BB200) in his 44th week as his self-titled album held at No.13 (#103-107 BB200; 145-weeks).

Outside the Top 10
Former No.1 Thomas Rhett with CENTER POINT ROAD (Valory Music/ Big Machine Records) slipped 10-11 (#91-93 BB200) in his 15th week.

Former No.1 Maren Morris with GIRL (Columbia Nashville/ Sony Music Nashville [SMN]) held at No.12 (#99-94) in her 27th frame.
Former No.1 Carrie Underwood with CRY PRETTY rebound 20-15 (#187-123 Billboard 200) in her 52nd week.

Florida Georgia Line with CAN’T SAY I AIN’T COUNTRY (Big Machine Label Group) fell 14-16 (#107-133 BB200) in their 30th chart frame.
Former No.1 Kacey Musgraves with GOLDEN HOUR (MCA Nashville) climbed 18-17 (#152-139 BB200) in her 71st frame.

Former No.1 Midland with LET IT ROLL (Big Machine Label Group | Amazon UK - iTunes - Amazon.com) dropped 15-24 (#110 – off the Billboard 200) in their third retail week.

Outside the Top 25

Trisha Yearwood with EVERY GIRL (Gwendolyn | Amazon UK - iTunes - Amazon.com) slumped 5-36 (#57 – off the top Billboard 200) and slipped 2-4 on Country Album Sales but 6 places higher than the No.2 Top Country Album Luke Combs’ ‘This One's For You’ which dropped 7-10 on Country Sales.

Billboard Hot Country Songs (Chart issue week of September 21, 2019)
On Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart - which blends:
a) All-format airplay, as monitored by BDS
b) Sales, as tracked by Nielsen SoundScan and
c) Streaming, (tracked by Nielsen BDS from such services as Spotify, Muve, Slacker, Rhapsody, Rdio and Xbox Music, among others) according to BDS it results in:

Blanco Brown with “The Git Up” (Trailer Trap Music/Broken Bow Music Group/ BMG/Wheelhouse/Stoney Creek/Broken Bow) topped Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart (dated Sept. 21) for a 10th week, making him the first soloist to reign for double-digit weeks with a debut single since the survey started using multiple metrics in October 2012.
The track first led the July 13 list, aided early on by a viral dance challenge on TikTok and YouTube, with Brown having posted a tutorial in May.

“I grabbed spoons, tambourine, anything I could find that made a nice sound,” he recently told Billboard of solely writing “Git.” “When I got finished, it was so full of joy. I was doing the dance as I was writing it. I said, ‘This is going to be a song that makes people dance and brings joy.’ ”

The 34-year- old Atlanta native previously produced songs for pop and hip-hop acts including Chris Brown, Fergie and Pitbull. Because Brown also produced “Git” himself, the single is the first Hot Country Songs No. 1 written, produced and performed by a single person since the chart adopted its streaming-, airplay- and sales-based methodology seven years ago.
“Git” raked in 19 million U.S. streams (down 7%) and 15,000 downloads sold (down 21%) in the week ending Sept. 12, according to Nielsen Music, and ruled Country Streaming Songs and Country Digital Song Sales for a 12th week each. On Country Airplay, it increases by 12% to 1.9 million audience impressions in the week ending Sept. 15 and lifts 48-46.

Brown’s smash is the first Hot Country Songs charttopper to lead for at least 10 weeks since Luke Combs’ “Beautiful Crazy” ruled for 11 frames beginning March 2. The last such leader before that, pop artist Bebe Rexha (in her country debut) and Florida Georgia Line’s “Meant to Be,” set the record for the most time dominating the tally, having begun its 50-week domination on Dec. 16, 2017.
Brown joins FGL as the only acts since October 2012 to top Hot Country Songs for at least 10 weeks with a career-opening hit: The pair’s “Cruise” totaled 24 weeks at No. 1 beginning that December.
“Git” is the debut single from Brown’s first full-length, Honeysuckle & Lightning Bugs, due Oct. 11.

Dierks Bentley notched his 24th Hot Country Songs top 10 as “Living” (Capitol Nashville) lifted 11-8. The track climbed 3-2 on Country Airplay, up 5% to 35.1 million in audience, and gets a 23% hike to 4.6 million U.S. streams.

Chris Lane with "I Don’t Know About You" entered the Hot Country Songs top five (9-5), sparked by a 10% rise to 31.9 million in audience as it pushed 5-3 on Country Airplay. It also boasted 6.2 million U.S. streams.

Luke Bryan Stays At #1 For Second Week With 'Knockin' Boots'
Congratulations to Luke Bryan, Royce Risser, Bobby Young, David Friedman, Chris Schuler and the Capitol promotion team on landing second consecutive week at No. 1 with “Knockin’ Boots.” The song is the first single from Bryan’s forthcoming seventh studio album. Runaway June’s Buy My Own Drinks” extended its run marking the first time a female trio has broken into the top five on the USA's Mediabase Country chart since the Dixie Chicks in 2003. This is a thrilling triumph for the band as it also marked their first top five hit as songwriters. This milestone is part of Country music history, making them the highest charting female trio since the Dixie Chicks’ “Travelin’ Soldier” sixteen years ago. Along with earning this coveted accolade, the trio have announced their upcoming performance on ABC'S Good Morning America on October 3rd.
Not only are the members of Runaway June tremendous performers and musicians, but they are clearly successful songwriters; this song is the first top five song for each of the members as writers in which they wrote alongside Hillary Lindsey and Josh Kear. As songwriters, the members of the band wrote or cowrote a majority of the tracks on their critically acclaimed album Blue Roses.
"There’s a very contemporary spirit of independence and grown-ass agency that courses through these songs.” - Rolling Stone
"This song is a rallying cry for fiercely independent women to celebrate their own damn self-sufficiency." - CMT
