The
Billboard 200 chart measures multi-metric album consumption, which includes
traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent
albums (SEA).
Lil Wayne landed his fourth No.1
album on the Billboard Top 200 Album Chart, as THA CARTER V debuts atop the tally.
The
set, which was released on Sept. 28 via Young Money/Republic Records, made a
splash with 480,000 equivalent album
units earned in the week ending Oct. 4, according to Nielsen Music. That sum is
the third-largest week for an album in 2018. Further, Tha Carter V also opens
with the second-biggest streaming week ever for an album, with 433 million
on-demand audio streams logged for its songs in its first week.
Of
Tha Carter V’s 480,000 units, most were driven by SEA units: 325,000. The rest
of the title’s opening overall unit sum is comprised of album sales totaling 140,879 copies and TEA units
equaling 14,000.
Rod Stewart with BLOOD RED ROSES made a debut at No. 62. Stewart’s 43rd charting
effort is his first album for Republic Records and bowed with 10,000 units (9,364 pure sales) and also
launches at No.7 on Top Rock Albums. The set was led by the top 10 Adult
Contemporary hit “Didn’t I.” The track -- his 23rd top 10 -- marked his first
non-holiday and non-cover top 10 hit on the list since 1999, when “Faith of the
Heart” peaked at No. 3.
Top
Country Albums now ranks the most popular country albums of the week, as
compiled by Nielsen Music, based on multi-metric consumption (blending traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA), and streaming equivalent albums (SEA)).
10 digital track sales from an
album = 1 track equivalent album (TEA)
“sale”
1,500 on demand song streams from
an album to one streaming equivalent album (SEA) “sale”.
Nielsen
Music compiles the sales and streaming data. Billboard continues to publish pure album sales charts (subscription to
billboard biz ), exclusively comprising
Nielsen’s sales data.
Luke Combs with THIS ONE’S FOR YOU (River House/ Columbia Nashville/Sony Music
Nashville) moved 2-1 (#20-17 Billboard
200; 4,376 sales; 70-week total 335,700) to
lead the tally for a 15th non-consecutive week. Thanks to overall consumption units
it overhauled previous weeks’ No.1 by Carrie Underwood despite selling over
11.3K less copies at retail.
Carrie Underwood with CRY PRETTY
slipped 1-2 (7-18 Billboard 200) on Billboard Top Country Albums selling 15,710 copies (down 45%; 3-week total
294,796 copies). Her first week sales were fuelled by a concert ticket/album sale
redemption offer. By comparison her 2015 album STORYTELLER had sold 264,700
copies after its third frame (after debut sales of 164,300)
Former No1 Dan + Shay with their self-titled
album (Warner Bros./Warner Music Nashville) advanced 5-3 (#49-44 BB200; 1,441
sales; 15-week total 57,100).
Kane Brown with his 10 non-consecutive week No.1 SELF-TITLED fell
3-4 (#47-46 BB200; 2,777 sales; 96-week total 460,900)
Chris Stapleton with the 178-week TRAVELLER (MERCURY/ UMGN)
slipped 4-5 (#48-47 BB200; 3,286 sales; 179 week total
2,361,600) as his set From A Room: Volume 1 (Mercury/Universal
Music Group Nashville) climbed 16-14 (#158-160
BB200; 2,026 sales;
74-week total 844,600) and
From A
Room: Volume 2 fell 26-29 in its 44th frame (2,022 sales; 44-week total 439,100).
Former
6-week non-consecutive week No.1 Jason Aldean with REARVIEW
TOWN (Macon/Broken Bow Records) held at No.6 (#64-60 BB200; 2,208 sales;
25-week total 418,100).
Former
No.1 Thomas Rhett with LIFE
CHANGES (Valory/Big Machine Label Group) held at No.7 (#68-70 BB200; 1,000 sales; 56-week total 297,000).
Country
icon Loretta Lynn moved into a tie for the second most top 10s on Billboard’s
Top Country Albums chart as her new studio set WOULDN’T IT BE GREAT (Legacy | Amazon UK - UK iTunes
- Amazon.com) arrived at No.8 (No.78
Billboard 200) earning 9,000
equivalent album units (8,629 pure sales) in the week ending Oct. 4.
The 86-year-old Lynn notches her 41st Top Country Albums top 10, matching Dolly Parton for the second-best sum. Willie Nelson leads all acts with 49. Lynn passes George Strait, with 40 top 10s.
Additionally,
the living legend collected her 17th charting album on the Billboard 200 tally.
Lynn charted her first 13 entries between 1967 and 1975, and then did not
revisit the list until 1993, when Honky Tonk Angels -- her collaborative album
with Dolly Parton and Tammy Wynette -- reached No. 42.
She then came back in
2004 with her Jack White-produced Van Lear Rose (No. 24), and then in 2016 and
this year with Full Circle (No. 19) and Wouldn’t It Be Great, respectively.
Lynn’s
daughter Patsy Lynn Russell and John Carter Cash, son of Johnny Cash
and June Carter Cash, co-produced the 13-track album. It marked her first album
since her 2016 holiday set CHRISTMAS TIME BLUE, which peaked at No. 26 on Top
Country Albums. Earlier that year, she released FULL CIRCLE, which debuted and
peaked at No. 4.
Lynn
logged her first Top Country Albums appearance and first top 10 with Loretta
Lynn Sings, which peaked at No. 2 in 1964, the year that the chart launched.
Dierks Bentley with
THE MOUNTAIN (Capitol Nashville |
UMGN) moved 23-9 (#70-193 BB200; 5,493 sales; up 161%; 17-week
total 163,700).
Brett Young with self- titled BRETT YOUNG (BMLG) fell 9-10 (#86-100 BB200; 1,000 sales; 86-week total 236,500).
Outside the
Top 10
In its seventh
frame former No1 Cole Swindell with ALL OF IT (Warner Bros./Warner Music
Nashville) fell 8-11 (78-126 BB200; 2,728 sales; down 46%; 7-week total 66,700).
Keith Urban with GRAFFITI U rocketed 42-16
to return to the top 25 in his 22nd frame (3,542 sales).
Former
No.1 Kenny Chesney with
LIVE IN NO SHOES NATION (Blue Chair/Columbia Nashville) fell 13-17 (155-176 BB200; 1,943 sales; 10-week total 114,900).
Former No.1 Luke Bryan with WHAT MAKES YOU COUNTRY (Capitol
Nashville | UMGN) fell 15-18 (#159-178 BB200; 1,303 sales; 43-week total 331,400).
Florida Georgia Line with their 4-track EP FLORIDA GEORGIA LINE (Big Machine Label Group, LLC | UK iTunes) fell 21-23 (#190-199 BB200).

Debut No.42 “Short Skirt Weathe” Kane Brown
Singer-songwriter Russell Dickerson rode to his second straight Country Airplay No.1
with sophomore single “Blue Tacoma”
(Triple Tigers). In its 32nd week on the tally (dated Oct. 13), “Tacoma” ascended
2-1, up 9 percent to 44 million audience impressions in the tracking
week ending Oct. 7, according to Nielsen Music.
On the airplay, streaming and sales-based Hot Country Songs chart,
“Tacoma” pulled into the top five (7-5).
“Man, it feels surreal, honestly — like, is that really my song at
No.1?,” Dickerson marvelled to Billboard upon hearing that “Tacoma” had
reached the Country Airplay summit. “Plus, having my second No.1 in one year is
just absolute insanity. I’m definitely still trying to take in the gravity of
it all.”
Dickerson co-penned “Blue” with his frequent writing collaborators Casey
Brown and Parker Welling. The trio also authored Dickerson’s debut
single and first Country Airplay No.1, “Yours,” which led for two weeks
starting on the Jan. 27-dated chart; the same week, it peaked at No. 3 on Hot
Country Songs.
“Yeah, ‘Tacoma’ was a no-brainer for me,” responded Dickerson about
whether it was the natural choice as his second single. “I always gauge the
audience by what songs are clicking because they’re the ones who’ll be
listening to the radio,” he said. “ ‘Tacoma’ is super special to me because
when we originally wrote the song, it was good, but there was just some magic
missing. My wife and I got to go out to California for a wedding and drive the
Pacific Coast Highway. When I got back, I realized we didn’t capture the awe
and wonder of this scenery. So we rewrote a lot of the verses, and that’s when
it clicked for everyone. It sounds exactly how driving the Pacific Coast
feels.”
Dickerson is the first artist to land Country Airplay leaders with his
first two entries since Luke Combs rattled off No.1s with “Hurricane” and
“When It Rains It Pours,” for two weeks each in May and November 2017,
respectively. Combs made it three in a row when third single “One Number Away”
topped the June 9 survey.
Kane
Brown banked his third total and consecutive Country
Airplay top 10 as “Lose It”
(Zone 4/RCA Nashville) rose 11-10, increasing by 8 percent to 23 million
in audience.
“Lose” follows Kane’s first two Country Airplay No.1s: “Heaven,” which
led for two weeks starting May 19, and “What Ifs,” featuring Lauren Alaina (one
week, Oct. 28, 2017).
