The
Billboard 200 chart measures multi-metric album consumption, which includes
traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent
albums (SEA).
Paul McCartney achieved his first No.1
album on the Billboard Top 200 Album
Chart (BB200) in over 36 years, as his new studio effort, EGYPT STATION, bowed atop the list.
The
set, which was released on Sept. 7 via MPL/Capitol Records, launched with a
larger-than-expected 153,000
equivalent album units earned in the week ending Sept. 13 according to Nielsen
Music.
Of
Egypt Station’s 153,000 units, the majority were powered by traditional album
sales: 147,000 copies sold. The remainder was comprised of SEA units (5,000)
and TEA units (1,000).
McCartney’s
Eighth No.1 Album: Egypt Station gave McCartney his eight No.1 on the Billboard 200. He last led the list for three
consecutive weeks in 1982 with Tug of War (on the May 29 through June 12-dated
charts). McCartney’s tally of eight leaders includes his albums with Wings,
some of which were credited to Paul McCartney & Wings (Red Rose Speedway;
Band on the Run). Of course, McCartney is also a member of The Beatles, and
they still own the record for the most No. 1s on the Billboard 200 with 19
chart-toppers. The Beatles last led the tally with the greatest hits collection
1, which spent eight non-consecutive weeks at No. 1 in December 2000 through
February 2001.
McCartney’s
First Debut at No. 1: Egypt Station is Macca’s first album to debut at No. 1.
He had previously logged a pair of No. 2-debuting sets with 1997’s Flaming Pie
and 2001’s Wingspan: Hits and History. As an aside, The Beatles logged four No.
1 debuts, all with albums in the 1990s and 2000s: Anthology 1 (1995), Anthology
2 (1996) and Anthology 3 (1996) and 1 (2000). (It’s worth noting that before
the chart began using Nielsen Music’s electronically-tracked point-of-sale
information in May of 1991, only six albums debuted at No. 1.)
McCartney
was in full-on promo mode during the album's release week, though the campaign
for the album really started with his Carpool Karaoke episode, which debuted on
June 21 during CBS’ The Late Late Show
With James Corden. The 23-minute long segment has been viewed more than 32
million times worldwide on YouTube. It was followed by an hourlong CBS special
on Aug. 20 titled Carpool Karaoke:
When Corden Met McCartney Live From Liverpool, which included previously
unreleased footage from their earlier karaoke shoot in June.
Around
Egypt Station's release day, McCartney made stops on SiriusXM’s The Howard Stern Show (Sept. 5), The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon
(Sept. 6) and WTF With Marc Maron
podcast (Sept. 6). He also partnered with YouTube for Live From NYC, a global
live stream performance from New York’s Grand Central Station on Sept. 7.
Top
Country Albums now ranks the most popular country albums of the week, as
compiled by Nielsen Music, based on multi-metric consumption (blending traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA), and streaming equivalent albums (SEA)).
10 digital track sales from an
album = 1 track equivalent album (TEA)
“sale”
1,500 on demand song streams from
an album to one streaming equivalent album (SEA) “sale”.
Nielsen
Music compiles the sales and streaming data. Billboard continues to publish pure album sales charts (subscription to
billboard biz ), exclusively comprising
Nielsen’s sales data.

Luke
Bryan notched his 12th multiweek No.1 on Billboard’s
Country Airplay chart as “Sunrise,
Sunburn, Sunset” (Capitol Nashville) spent a second frame at the summit
(on the list dated Sept. 22). The track reigned with 42.6 million
audience impressions, down 3 percent, in the week ending Sept. 16, according to
Nielsen Music.
“Sunrise,” Bryan’s 20th total Country Airplay leader, is his second multiweek
No.1 in 2018 following “Most People Are Good,” which led for three weeks
beginning March 31.
Bryan’s longest-leading No. 1 is “Play It Again” (four frames, 2014).
“Sunrise” marked the 11th multiweek Country Airplay No.1 of 2018 —
clearly a rising trend in recent years. Nine songs crowned the chart for over
one week in the same time frame in 2017, after five did so in the same span in
2016.
“I am in favor of more multiweek No.1s and think it’s baloney to have 45
or so No.1s in a year,” says Cumulus VP country Charlie Cook. (The most
No.1s in a year since Country Airplay began in 1990? Forty, in 2016. “We like
it when strong songs are rewarded with staying at the top of the chart for
extra weeks,” said Cook. “We keep strong-testing songs in power rotation long
after they’ve dropped off the chart.”
One example of a track that Cook feels was No.1 on Country Airplay for
less time than it may have deserved is Sam Hunt’s “Body Like a Back Road,”
which led for three weeks in May 2017. As it topped Country Streaming Songs for
34 weeks and Country Digital Song Sales for 31, “that song should have stayed
at No. 1 [on Country Airplay] for six weeks,” he says.
“I certainly hope this is a trend,” said Entercom Communications KILT
Houston PD Bruce Logan of the rising tide of multiweek No.1s. “Real hits
are songs that connect with the audience, sell, stream, research and move on to
solid recurrent airplay. As a format, for us to be healthy, we have to make
real hits, not the conveyer belt that became ‘push week’ [by labels to send a
song to No. 1] with [a big decrease in airplay] the minute the push is over.
Anything you have to push for isn’t a hit.”
Dylan
Scott with “Hooked”
(Curb) ascended 4-2 in its 55th chart week on Country Airplay, up
12 percent to 40.1 million impressions. The track completed the longest climb
to the top two, a mark previously held by William Michael Morgan’s “I Met a
Girl,” which peaked at No. 2 in its 52nd week (Oct. 15, 2016).
“Hooked” also jumped to the Hot Country Songs top 10, romping 11-6. In
addition to its airplay gain, it surges by 27 percent to 4.1 million U.S.
streams. Scott banks his second Hot Country Songs top 10 following “My Girl,”
which peaked at No. 3 (and topped Country Airplay) in summer 2017.
Carrie
Underwood with “Love
Wins” (Capitol Nashville) debuted at No.34 on Country Airplay
(3.8 million). The song is the second single from her album CRY PRETTY,
released Sept. 14. The title track became her 27th top 10 when it reached No.9
on the chart dated Sept. 1.

it arrived at No.24 as the chart’s highest new entry. Additionally Kane’s “Lose

Billboard Hot 100 debut as his fiery diss track "Rap Devil," directed towards Eminem, opened at No. 13 (on
the chart dated Sept. 22). "Rap Devil" logged 23.5 million U.S.
