Carrie
Underwood Makes Country History on the Billboard 200 Chart As 'Cry Pretty' Bundles
in at No. 1
Carrie Underwood made history as the first female country artist to score four Number One albums as the singer’s CRY PRETTY debuted atop the Billboard Top 200 Album Chart (BB200).
The
set launched with the biggest week of the year for a woman, and the largest for
a country album in more than three years.
It surpassed
the previous high-water mark, set by Cardi B’s Invasion of Privacy, which
launched at No. 1 with 255,000 units
(April 21 chart).
The
set, which was released on Sept. 14 via Capitol Nashville, bows with 266,000 equivalent album units earned
in the week ending Sept. 20 according to Nielsen Music. Of that sum, 250,704 were in traditional album
sales. The remainder was comprised of SEA units (11,000) and TEA units (4,000).
Cry
Pretty’s sizable first-week was
supported by sales generated from a concert ticket/album sale redemption offer,
as well as sturdy sales via sellers like Target, Walmart, the iTunes Store and
so forth.
First Woman to Take Four
Country Albums to No.1 on Billboard 200: Underwood is the first woman to hit the top
of the Billboard 200 chart with four country albums: Cry Pretty, Blown Away
(2012), Play On (2009) and Carnival Ride (2007). Previously, she
was tied with Faith Hill, Linda Ronstadt and Taylor Swift with three leaders
each. (Swift has had five No. 1s on the Billboard 200, but only three of them
also charted on the Top Country Albums chart, as her two most recent leaders --
reputation and 1989 -- were pop efforts.) Among all acts, Garth Brooks has
brought the most country albums to No. 1 on the Billboard 200, with nine
leaders in his career.
Biggest Week for a Country
Album in More Than Three Years: Cry Pretty’s launch of 266,000 units is the biggest for any
country album since Aug. 29, 2015, when Luke Bryan’s Kill the Lights bowed at
No. 1 with 345,000 units earned. Cry Pretty logs the biggest overall week for a
country album by a woman since the charts began ranking albums by equivalent
album units in late 2014.
The
last larger haul for an album by a woman was racked up on the Dec. 2,
2017-dated list, when Taylor Swift’s reputation entered at No. 1 with 1.238
million units.
Top
Country Albums now ranks the most popular country albums of the week, as
compiled by Nielsen Music, based on multi-metric consumption (blending traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA), and streaming equivalent albums (SEA)).
10 digital track sales from an
album = 1 track equivalent album (TEA)
“sale”
1,500 on demand song streams from
an album to one streaming equivalent album (SEA) “sale”.
Nielsen
Music compiles the sales and streaming data. Billboard continues to publish pure album sales charts (subscription to
billboard biz ), exclusively comprising
Nielsen’s sales data.
Carrie Underwood sat “pretty” at No.1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart, as her latest studio effort, CRY PRETTY, arrived atop the list and blew in at No.1 on Billboard Top Country Albums. In doing so, she makes country history atop the tally, as she becomes the only woman to take four country albums to No.1 on the all-genre albums chart.
“This
album is so special to me for so many reasons and I couldn’t be more proud that
people have embraced it the way they have,” Underwood told Billboard.
“I
feel so blessed to be able to do what I do, and I am incredibly grateful for
the support of fans around the world that make it all possible.”
She
passed Miranda Lambert, who has posted six successive career-starting Top
Country Albums No.1s (with all also debuting at the summit).
Underwood
ties Dolly Parton for the third-most
Top Country Albums No.1s among women. Reba
McEntire leads with 13, followed by Loretta
Lynn (10).
Underwood
produced Pretty with David Garcia, who also co-wrote six of the tracks, and she
co-penned 12 of the 13 songs on the set.
The
title-track first single from the album peaked at No. 5 on the airplay,
streaming and sales-based Hot Country Songs chart and No.9 on Country Airplay, becoming Underwood's 27th top 10 on the
lists, encompassing all her proper singles promoted to the format.
In addition to co-writing the lead-off single single with Hillary Lindsey, Lori McKenna, and Liz Rose (aka
The Love Junkies), Carrie is co-produced her album with fellow
writer/producer David
Garcia. Underwood said, “At this point in my career, I feel
stronger and more creative than ever. I think you can hear that in this new
album. It’s emotional, it’s soulful, it’s real, and we also have some fun on
there too. I hope everyone loves it as much as I have loved making it.”

Critical reception for Carrie Underwood’s Cry Pretty:
Allmusic (Rating; 4.1/2 STARS): …Without abandoning the sweeping, cinematic
diva-pop that's her signature, Underwood buttresses her country roots while
fearlessly threading hip-hop and R&B within her music, going as far as to
invite Ludacris in for a verse on the triumphant closer, "The Champion."…..
"The Bullet," an anti-gun-violence ballad, is nervy and affecting in
a way Underwood never has been, and it finds a counterpart in
"Southbound," a party tune that's as effervescent as anything she's
ever cut. These two songs show how Underwood's deliberate maturation doesn't
come at the expense of what she's done before. Instead, it deepens and enriches
what was already there -- as any good maturation would -- and the result is an
album as satisfying as it is surprising.
Consequence Of Sound (Rating: B) For her sixth studio album, Carrie Underwood has taken some modest
political risks without changing her full-throated style. She knows what she’s
good at, and Cry Pretty is full of the kind of songs that made her one of the
most popular artists in the world. It’s familiar music. That’s not always a
good thing, but sometimes familiar and comforting is exactly what you need. Essential
Tracks: “Drinking Alone”, “The Bullet”, and “Love Wins”
Exclaim.ca (Rating: 6/10) …The new album has some of her best material, and some of her worst — it
is a wildly uneven effort, with no consistency of form or content. It is
sex-drenched, but often not very sexy; it is melodramatic, but sometimes lacks
the first-rate story telling of her previous hits, like "Two Black
Cadillacs." When the work hits, it hits hard, and when it fails, it feels
like a disappointment….The album is frustrating, with no middle ground, and the
strengths don't quite make up for the weaknesses.
Sounds Like Nashville (Dan Hyman Rating: Very Positive) …Even more thrilling, the 12-track LP (the
majority of whose songs are Underwood co-writes) also features the singer
taking bold stylistic risks. She’s previously been more strategic in this
respect, and rarely veered off sonic course….Cry Pretty is Underwood’s most
stirring album in years. Her voice alone will always move units, but it’s her
heart that will keep things interesting.
Uncut (Rating: 50/ 100)…Overall it's a box-ticking collection unlikely to broaden her mainstream
fanbase. [Nov 2018, p.37]
The Guardian (Rating: 2/5) …It is all gloss and shine, with sadness at industry-approved levels of
maximum efficacy. Take 75% uplift, add 20% melancholy, top up with 5% not
actually contentious controversy, and voilĂ : Cry Pretty.
