GREATEST LOVE: The search begins…
In May 2018 UKCountryRadio.com launched their search for UKCountryRadio.com's Greatest Love Songs.
Listen
to The Late Night Love Affair weekend presenters Margaret Ann and Richard
Edeson get all lurved up in the promo radio indent:
UKCountryRadio.com compiled
UKCountryRadio.com's Greatest Love Songs - the top 30 country love
songs of all time as chosen by the listeners.
This
was the idea of Saturday evening presenter Will
"Big Dawg" Downie who's trying to think up some great country
love songs to play at his wedding in early 2019.
So,
throughout the rest of 2018 UKCountryRadio.com ("Playing the Hottest
Country Music for The UK") asked listeners to submit their all time three favourite country music love songs.
This
was the latest in their Greatest Series,
which, over the last few years, has produced UKCountryRadio.com's Greatest Hits (2013; #1 He
Stopped Loving Her Today - George Jones; Top 30),
Greatest Stars (2014; #1 Johnny Cash; Top 30),
Greatest Ladies (2015; #1 Dolly Parton; Top 30),
Greatest Guys (2016; #1 Willie Nelson; Top 30) and Greatest Groups (2017; #1 Little Big Town; Top 30).
Things
got underway with the official launch on Bank Holiday Monday, 7th May.
During
2018, 24/7 Internet Station UKCountryRadio.com
compiled UKCountryRadio.com's Greatest Love Songs - the top 30 country love
songs of all time as chosen by the listeners.
The
closing date was December 20th to enable the compilation of the chart ready for
broadcast on Boxing Day.
No
real surprise that "I Will Always Love You" topped
the list, originally written and recorded in 1973 by Dolly Parton which was released in 1974 as a single and was written
as a farewell to her one-time partner and mentor of seven years, Porter
Wagoner, following Parton's decision to pursue a solo career.
Parton's
version reached number one on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart twice. It
first reached number one in June 1974, and then in October 1982, with her
re-recording on the soundtrack of the movie version of The Best Little
Whorehouse in Texas.
Many
music fans associate it with Whitney
Houston who recorded the the song for the 1992 film The Bodyguard which
became a worldwide No1 hit.
The
top 30 was representative of the wide age demographic of listeners with songs
dating back to the 50s with Everly
Brothers’ “Let It Be Me” and “He'll Have To Go” by Jim Reeves to contemporary tracks with Lanco’s 2017 "Greatest Love Story"
Country Airplay/ Hot Country Songs No.1,
which was #24 on the list, receiving heavy airplay on the station and Brett Young’s “In Case You Didn't Know”
(2016) made the top 10 with a No.7 placing.
The only UK artist to appear was the late multi-award winner Gary Perkins (1962-2018) with “Love Me Like I Love You” as fans showed their love for the frontman of band Gary Perkins and The Breeze. Gary sadly lost his battle with pancreatic cancer. His funeral will take place on the 27th December at Rotherham Crematorium. Gary Perkins and The Breeze were widely acknowledged as one of the best live bands in British country music. They won the British Country Music Band Of The Year Award in 2009 and 2011, with Gary adding the trophy to the Award he won in 2008 as Best British Male Solo Artist Of The Year and Male Vocalist of the Year in 2012 and 2013. They won UK Country Group Of The Year: (sponsored by Graham L.Hall's Country Spirit Website “Feel The Experience”) at the UK Country Awards (sponsored by UKCountryRadio.com) in September retaining the title with a third successive win.
Broadcast
at 12noon on Boxing Day (Dec 26, 2018) UKCountryRadio.com revealed the top 30!
