Country Album Billboard Top 200 Chart News March 7, 2012
Adele's "21" clocks up a 23rd week at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, selling 246,529 copies this week (down 17%). It's the longest-running #1 since Prince & the Revolution's "Purple Rain" soundtrack scored 24 weeks at No. 1 in 1984 and 1985.
Following the death of the Monkees' Davy Jones on Feb. 29, the pop group returns to the Billboard 200 albums chart for the first time since 2003. The group's albums sold a combined 29K with "The Best of the Monkees" re-entering the album chart at No. 20.
Three Whitney Houston albums are in the Top 10 of The Billboard Top 200. Houston is one of just six artists to have three or more of the 10 best-selling albums in the U.S. since August 1963, when Billboard merged separate mono and stereo charts into one comprehensive listing. (Coincidentally, that was also the month that Houston was born.) The five other artists to achieve this feat are Peter, Paul & Mary, The Beatles, Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass, Simon & Garfunkel and Michael Jackson.
With a sales increase of 11% Lady Antebellum with sales of 20,136 copies of OWN THE NIGHT once again head off the opposition to stay top of the Billboard Country album Chart. Their single “Dancin’ Away With My Heart” also enters the Top 10 on the Billboard Country Singles Chart.
Luke Bryan’s TAILGATES & TANLINES stay at #2 selling 18,750 copies (5% sales gain) and in so doing breaks the 800K mark.
Jason Aldean remains at #3 with MY KINDA PARTY shifting another 16,153 albums.
The popularity of The Band Perry continues with a 22% weekly increase moving up 11 places on the Top 200 to go 4th on the Country chart.
After a busy week that took country music entertainer and award-winning TV host Craig Morgan across five states over six days, the singer’s latest studio record, THIS OLE BOY, sold 12,131 in its debut week to land at #5. This represents Morgan’s highest chart debut in his career and best opening week numbers since 2006’s LITTLE BIT OF LIFE.
Miranda Lambert had a good sales week ( 33% increase) to move up to #6.
Lyle Lovett also debuted at #9 with his new album RELEASE ME with first week sales of 10,244.
Elsewhere on the Top 200 The Carolina Chocolate Drops the old-time string band from Durham, North Carolina sold 4,581 copies of their new album LEAVING EDEN and are #6 on the Billboard Folk Album chart.

COUNTRY SINGLES NEWS

Kenny Chesney scores his 23rd # 1 single this week with “Reality,” which he co-wrote with longtime writing partner and friend Brett James. Their previous collaborations include the chart-topping “Out Last Night,” the Top 10 “Keg In The Closet,” and “Spirit of A Storm," from Chesney’s introspective ‘Lucky Old Sun’ album. “Reality” was released in October 2011 as the fifth single from the album HEMINGWAY'S WHISKEY and Kenny co-produced it with Buddy Cannon.
The idea for “Reality” was born in a dentist’s chair. Chesney says, “I was lying in the chair, I had the mask on, you know, where they give you that funny gas, so they can work on your mouth without you feeling it, and I remember thinking, ‘Wow, I haven’t been this relaxed in a long time.’ That was my escape from reality and that’s what the song is about” (BNA Press Release) Chesney is set to release his new album (as yet untitled) on BNA Records on June 19.
