Billboard Year:
December 3, 2016
- November 25, 2017
Billboard's year-end music recaps are based on chart performance between the Dec. 3, 2016 and Nov. 25, 2017-dated
charts. Data registered before or after a title's chart run are not considered
in these standings.
That
methodology detail, and the December-November time period, account for some of
the differences between these lists and the calendar-year recaps that are
compiled independently by Nielsen Music *.
In 2017, BuzzAngle
Music reported a total of 377B streams,
an increase of 50.3% from last year. In addition, more music fans are now
paying for their listening time while subscription
streaming has risen from 76% to 80%.
According to a mid-year report from the Recording Industry
Association of America, the estimated retail revenues from recorded music
rose 17% in the first half of 2017, with revenue from music streaming sites accounting for 62% of the total
market.
From
March 2017 Top Country Albums started
ranking the most popular country albums of the week, as compiled by Nielsen
Music, based on multi-metric consumption
(blending traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA), and streaming equivalent albums (SEA)).
This resulted in Catalog albums (previously those that were more than 18-months
old and that has fallen below position 100 on the Billboard 200) returning to
main Billboard Top Country album chart.
Total
Album Consumption = Album Sales + (Song Sales/10) + (Song

Ed
Sheeran and Taylor Swift
were the only two artists in 2017 to surpass 1 million album sales, including digital album downloads and
physical albums sold.
Swift’s album entitled reputation, sold 1,899,722 albums,
while Ed Sheeran’s album ÷, pronounced “divide,” sold 1,042,255 albums.
Record Business Turns A
Corner
“We’ve turned
the corner,” says UMG/Nashville Chairman/CEO Mike Dungan. “Last year I was saying we might be, now we are.”
Specifically, the country business was
up 6% last year, while the overall music business grew 12.5%. “So yes, our
piece of the pie is down to 8% of the overall music business, but it’s because
we lag behind in streaming.”
Country accounted for 6% of overall
streaming, up from 5%
in 2016 an 4% the year. prior.
Streaming accounts for 46% of country
revenue, but 65% of the
overall business. “With streaming playing
such a big part in the hip hop world, our share of business is going to
decrease,” Dungan says. “[The numbers for] these hip hop records are ridiculous.”
Sony EVP/COO Ken Robold says country’s growth amidst still
lagging streaming numbers is attributable to a number of factors, perhaps most
notably that Country is an adult format. “You look at the top streaming tracks
and, yes, they’re huge hits,” he says, “but they’re all by artists who skew
younger: Sam Hunt, Kane Brown, Luke Combs.”

The Year in
Charts 2017:
Ed
Sheeran Is Top Artist, Kendrick Lamar's 'DAMN.' Rules Billboard 200
Following a male-dominated year on the charts, the year-end top
10 rankings of the overall top artists, Billboard 200 albums & Billboard
Hot 100 songs are all populated by men.
For the first time since 1984, the entire top 10 of Billboard’s
2017 year-end top artists ranking are all men.
Ed Sheeran closed out the year as the
top artist following the success of
his second No. 1 Billboard 200 album, ÷
(Divide), and its multiple hit singles, including the No. 1 Billboard Hot 100
song of the year, “Shape of You.” It’s the first time he has led either
year-end list.
The 26-year-old singer-songwriter is the first British male soloist to be the year’s top artist (and only second
ever) since George Michael was tops in 1988. (Billboard began compiling a
year-end top-artist list in 1981.)
Men so dominated Billboard’s biggest tallies during the 2017
chart year (which ran from Dec. 3, 2016, to Nov. 25, 2017) that they crowd the top
10 of all three of the biggest year-end lists: Top Artists, Top Billboard 200 Albums and Top Billboard Hot 100 Songs. No woman in a lead role ranked in that
region of the three charts.
Where did
all the ladies go? In 2017, the top of the Billboard 200 and Hot 100 charts were
flush with hip-hop acts (generally a male-dominated genre), thanks in part to
the continued rise of rap on streaming services. Further, two of pop’s biggest
female stars, Adele and Taylor Swift, were
between albums during most of the chart year.
** Taylor Swift, who was the top artist in 2009 and 2015, did
not release Reputation in time for
the 2017 chart year, though her single “Look
What You Made Me Do” did crown the weekly Hot 100 at the tail end of the
period.

Billboard's Top Country
Artist of 2017
On the strength
of his massive hit "Body Like a Back Road," Sam Hunt is Billboard's
Top Country Artist of 2017.
Sam Hunt might have been “doin’ 15 in a 30” in the lyrics of “Body
Like a Back Road,” but the song itself sped to No.1 on Hot Country Songs in a fast two weeks.
It stayed at
the top a record-setting 34 weeks and played a major role in his performance in
the Billboard year-end charts. Even without an album to support it, Hunt and his
single hold the pole position on nine
of the 33 country lists for 2017, recognizing activity on charts dated
between Dec. 3, 2016-Nov. 25, 2017.
"Body"
was also the No.1 hit of the year on all of Billboard's country songs charts: Hot Country Songs, Country Airplay, Country
Streaming Songs and Country Digital
Song Sales.
Meanwhile, Hunt motors to No. 1 on five country artist lists: Top Country Artists, Top Country Artists
— Male, Top Hot Country Songs Artists,
Top Country Digital Songs Artists and Top
Country Streaming Songs Artists.
·
Hunt
made history, as his playful, R&B-flavored smash, which he co-wrote with
Zach Crowell, Shane McAnally and Josh Osborne, reigned for a record 34-weeks on Billboard's multi-metric Hot Country Songs
chart, which blends sales, streaming and airplay data. It surpassed Florida
Georgia Line's debut single "Cruise," which camped out in the
penthouse for 24 weeks in 2012-13.
·
"Body"
hit No. 1 on Feb. 25 (a week after debuting at No. 2) and reigned through Oct.
14. (As of the Dec. 16-dated chart, it has spent all 44 of its weeks on the
survey in the top five.)
·
Country Streaming Songs, it wrested the record for the most weeks at No.1 (also 34) from
"Cruise" (33). It also claimed the mark on Country Digital Song
Sales, dominating for 31 weeks and passing, guess who? "Cruise" (25).
·
On
Billboard's radio-powered Country
Airplay list, "Body" ruled
for three weeks starting on the chart dated May 6. Country Airplay is not
normally where songs linger in the top tier. Showing its uncommon power,
"Body" ranked in the top five for 16 weeks, setting yet another
record.
·
Helped
by pop radio crossover support, the
song also hit No.6 on the all-genre Billboard Hot 100, marking the first
country song to reach the region since (surprise!) "Cruise" (No. 4,
2013).
"I don't
think breaking the record at the top of the Hot Country Songs chart was the
goal when Hunt released the song," Cindy Mabe, Universal Music Group
Nashville president, told Billboard earlier this year. "But, as summer met
Sam's 15 in a 30 Tour, combined with the pent-up demand for new music, this
record has become part of culture and [a] sexy
soundtrack for the summer. I think this is just the tip of the iceberg of
what's coming for Sam Hunt."
Billboard's Top Female
Country Artist of 2017
Miranda Lambert nabbed the trophy for Female Vocalist Of The Year at the 2017
Country Music Association Awards on Nov. 8, her seventh career win.
On the Top
Country Albums chart dated Dec. 10, 2016 (the second week of Billboard's 2017
chart year), Lambert's sixth studio set, THE
WEIGHT OF THESE WINGS, arrived as her
sixth No.1 and led for three weeks. Lambert is the second artist in the Top
Country Albums chart's 54-year history to post six consecutive career-opening
No.1s, tying Carrie Underwood.
Billboard's Top Country
Duo/Group of 2017
Florida Georgia Line repeated its 2016 win. The pair (Tyler
Hubbard and Brian Kelley) rolled their 10th and 11th Country Airplay No.1s in
the chart year; "May We All," featuring Tim
McGraw, led for two weeks, and another collaboration, "God,
Your Mama, And Me," featuring Backstreet Boys, reigned for one.
Billboard's Top New Country Artist of
the Year
Luke Combs snagged the honour who scored Country Airplay No.1s with his first
two singles.
"Hurricane"
reached the top on the chart dated May 27 for its first of a two-week stay.
When the 27-year-old singer-songwriter placed his second single, "When
It Rains It Pours," atop Country Airplay on the tally dated Nov. 4
for its first of two weeks, he became the first artist to top the tally with
two maiden entries since Kelsea Ballerini, who led with "Love Me Like You
Mean It" and "Dibs" in 2015 and 2016, respectively.
Combs became
the first male artist to go two-for-two from the start since Sam Hunt, with
"Leave the Night On" and "Take Your Time" in 2014 and 2015.
On Hot Country Songs, "Rains"
became Combs' first leader when it climbed 2-1 on the chart dated Nov. 25.
Billboard Top Country
Albums
Chris Stapleton (No. 2 Top Country Artist of the year,
behind Sam Hunt) claimed the top two titles on the year-end Top Country Albums
chart.
Stapleton's
2015 debut set, TRAVELLER, ranked at
No.1. It has led the weekly survey for 29
weeks to-date and placed in the top 10 each week since it reached No. 1 for
the first time on the chart dated Nov. 21, 2015.
In 2017
Stapleton released follow-up FROM A
ROOM: VOLUME 1. Produced by Dave Cobb, it arrived at No.1 on the Top Country Albums chart dated May 27. The set, which
won Album Of The Year at the CMA
Awards, has logged eight weeks atop Top Country Albums to-date.
From A Room:
Volume 2 was released Dec. 1. Both editions were recorded at Nashville's
historic RCA Studio A.
