In Her Own Words:
Haley very
kindly shares her personal details on the song
“Oughta Be”
This song is so special to me! “Oughta Be” is the first
song I ever co-wrote in Nashville.
I had met Patrick Thomas at an event in
Charleston, and connected with him during my next trip to Music City.
Co-writing with someone often feels like a blind date at first; you don’t know
the other writer’s style, likes, dislikes, or how they write.
Luckily for me,
Patrick and I clicked very naturally, and this song came soon after.
We were
going through song ideas in the Notes app on our phones, and I had the line
“I’m not trying to tell you who or how or what you gotta be, but you oughta be
with me” written down. He thought it was a good hook, so we went for it. It was
originally written as a duet, but I’ve tweaked it to be a solo track. However,
I would love to revisit it as a duet someday!
I was so excited to cut this song
because it is such a blast to play live, and the only song on the record with
such an extreme fiddle solo! I often catch people singing along to this song at
shows, and the beat is almost impossible not to dance to. In my mind, it was
the perfect choice as a follow up to “Lose My Number.” because it shows a
different side of myself to listeners.
Campbell (a multi-instrumentalist who counts guitar, violin, and piano among her talents) began busking on the streets of Charleston when she was only 13 years old. New York-born and South Carolina-raised, Campbell’s original music is a hybrid of city slicker sass and small-town sensibilities, mixing rock-style vocals with a country-style twang.
“Lose My Number,” the lead single from Lovers
Lottery, is a spirited, radio-ready Pop
Country tell-off to a “loser ex-boyfriend” that has earned Campbell
considerable notoriety.
Upon its release, “Lose My Number” earned local and regional airplay and debuted at #43 on the iTunes Singer/ Songwriter Chart. The song also peaked as a #5 pre-order on the iTunes Country Chart.
