While Musgraves’s win is significant for her career. Since its release GOLDEN HOUR has shifted about 107,000 copies in America since its release in March (is now back near the top of the all-genre iTunes charts).
The Brothers Osborne have now had 7 CMA nominations and won four of them this year retaining the Vocal Duo of the Year (2016-2018) for a third year.
Kenny Chesney and David Lee Murphy won Musical Event of the Year for “Everything’s Gonna Be Alright.” Chesney is a 12-time Musical Event of the Year nominee and three-time winner. Prior to this year’s win, Chesney also took home the award in 2007 for “Find Out Who Your Friends Are” with Tracy Lawrence and Tim McGraw, and 2012 for “Feel Like A Rockstar” with McGraw. Old Dominion brought the motel vibes, glowing neon signs and all, to the CMA Awards with their summer smash “Hotel Key.”
The shock on Old Dominion’s faces said it all as they made their way to the stage after winning Vocal Group of the Year for the first time, making sure to thank their fans, the songwriters, and all those who believe in what they’re doing.

Dierks Bentley and Brothers Osborne commanded the stage with a powerful duet of “Burning Man.”

WINNERS
Country
music has a new Entertainer of the Year,
and he was just as shocked as anyone. Keith Urban won the 2018 CMA Awards honor on
Wednesday night (Nov. 14). His reaction was priceless.
After
dabbing away tears and making his way to the stage, the "Never Comin'
Down" singer stammered through the usual thank you messages, including his
wife and daughters, whom he referred to by their nicknames. Nicole Kidman stood
in the crowd watching as Urban took the award. Fanning her face, she was in
awe.
"Above
all God I thank you," Urban said. "I wish my dad was alive to see this,
but I think he's watching over me tonight."
Keith
has been nominated 11 times in the Entertainer category and this was his second
win last picking it up in 2005.
His first CMA award came in 2001
winning Horizon Award. He has been nominated 49 times and has 13 wins.

YES! Kacey Musgraves snags Album of the Year
Kacey Musgraves was in awe as her latest
release Golden Hour was recognized as Album of the Year with producers Ian Kitchuck and Daniel Tashian. She thanked her producers, management,
fans, and her family.
Award show presenters typically try to keep a straight face
before they announce the winner — but on Wednesday night, the four members of Little Big Town couldn’t conceal their
excitement as they read the envelope at the Country Music Association Awards.
“And the CMA Award for album of the year goes to . .
." Karen Fairchild trailed off.
Then she smiled. “For all the little girls writing songs out there, ‘Golden
Hour,’ Kacey Musgraves!”
In the audience, Kacey Musgraves looked
stunned — while some predicted she could win the tough category, the odds
weren’t exactly in her favor. She hugged her grandmother, then made her way up
to the stage.
“Wow. This is really, really crazy timing, because I just
realized this morning — it sounds like a lie — 10 years ago today, I moved to
Nashville,” the 30-year-old Musgraves said, as she thanked her husband, Ruston
Kelly, along with her management and record label. “Ian Fitchuk and Daniel
Tashian, my two co-producers, made this record with me, and we poured
everything we have into this. And I’m so proud of it. It’s inspired by just
this beautiful universe, all of you and just most of all, love.”
While Musgraves’s win is significant for her career. Since its release GOLDEN HOUR has shifted about 107,000 copies in America since its release in March (is now back near the top of the all-genre iTunes charts).
In the UK Kacey’s GOLDEN HOUR has enjoyed a 32-weeks UK Official
UK Country Album Top 20 chart run peaking at No.1 and she’s been one of the
highest worldwide country music sellers the last 4 years.
It’s also a big deal for the industry with women of country
ridiculously only make up approximately 10 percent of the songs played on
country radio and the industry as a whole skewed male. It was an all-men
Entertainer Of The Year category for the second consecutive year.
Kacey has been nominated 20 times for a CMA Award with 4 wins (Note: 5 nominations and 1
win as an Album and song producer & video director).
With a similar
repeat story to 2017 when Keith Urban beat out Sam Hunt’s much fancied 34-week
No.1 “Body Like A Back Road” to with the 2017 CMA Single of the Year for “Blue
Ain’t Your Color” this year saw singer-songwriter Chris Stapleton with
“Broken Halos” (Producer: Dave Cobb, Chris Stapleton) overhaul the 50-week Hot Country
Songs No.1 “Meant To Be” by Bebe Rexha and Florida Georgia
Line to snag the 2018 CMA Single of the Year.
The organic-styled “Halos” is the second single from the former’s From A
Room: Volume 1, which arrived atop Billboard’s Top Country Albums chart dated
May 27, 2017
Stapleton reached the summit of Billboard’s
Country Airplay chart for the first time when “Broken Halos” (Mercury)
ascended 2-1 in its 35th week on the list (dated March 24; 41.191 million
audience / 8,170 radio plays).
On Country
Digital Song Sales “Halos” (released July 17, 2017) peaked at #2 (May 6, 2017)
and as of July 2018 has sold 556,000 downloads. On Hot Country Songs chart, it
peaked at #3 (chart dated March 3, 2018).
“Broken Halos” (writers Stapleton,
Mike Henderson) also won the 2018 CMA Song of the Year winning out over
Sam Hunts’
“Body Like A Back Road”, “Drowns the Whiskey” (Jason Aldean feat. Miranda Lambert), “Drunk Girl” (Chris Janson) and Dan
+ Shay’s “Tequila”.
Stapleton also
bagged Male Vocalist of the Year for the fourth successive year (2015-2018). He has been nominated 21 times with 13 wins (Note: 5 nominations and 3 wins as a
producer Album of the Year & Single of the Year).
When Carrie
Underwood was putting together her Cry Pretty album, any hope of
winning an award as a result of it was far in the back of her mind. The
superstar picked up her fifth win
for Female Vocalist of the Year at
the 2018 CMA Awards on Wednesday (Nov. 14), resulting in a tear-filled moment
as she collected the honor. She has now tallied 30 CMA nominations winning surprisingly
just 7. She last won Female Vocalist in 2016
and before that held the crown from 2006-2008.
The Brothers Osborne have now had 7 CMA nominations and won four of them this year retaining the Vocal Duo of the Year (2016-2018) for a third year.
Old Dominion won Vocal Group of the Year for the first time after being
nominated the last 3 -years in the category thus ending the 6-year winning streak by Little Big Town (2012-2017). Old Dominion have now received 5
CMA nominations missing out on New Artist of the Year in 2016 & 2017.
Luke Combs took home New
Artist of the Year at his second attempt. He has received
3 CMA nominations missing out on New Artist of the Year in 2017 & Male
Vocalist in 2018.

Murphy received his first nomination and win for Musical Event of the Year this year.
Entertainer of the Year nominee Kenny Chesney was
unable to attend the 2018 CMA Awards due to a death in his family, a tweet
on the CMA's official channel read
When Kenny decided to make what became No Zip
Code with David Lee Murphy, he believed in the singularity of Murphy's voice as
an artist and as a writer. When Murphy asked Chesney to sing on “Everything’s
Gonna Be Alright,” a song about finding grace in the eye of the storm, he was
honored to sing with his good friend.
“Sometimes you hear songs, and they just feel
good,” said Chesney. “And occasionally one of the ones that feels so good says
something that people are needing to hear. That’s how I felt about ‘Everything’s
Gonna Be Alright’ the moment I heard it. Being able to be part of David Lee’s
song was just awesome.”
“David Lee is so singular, I’d hear his demos
and think, ‘People need to hear this voice, and his perspective,’” Chesney
says. “I couldn’t be happier to see him win his first CMA Award. We’ve sung
this song all over America this year, and I’ve seen the way stadiums full of
people respond. Every night when he’d walk out, they’d cheer – and when the
chorus came along, it was something they wanted to sing with us.”
“The crowd sings along from the very first line
with their hands in the air,” Murphy says. “What’s been heartwarming for me are
the personal stories from people whose lives have been affected by this song.
That’s what it’s all about.”
“My heartfelt thanks to everyone who made this
possible,” Murphy responds, “especially my great friend Kenny Chesney. Love
you, brother!
Music
Video of the Year went to Thomas
Rhett and director TK McKamy for
“Marry
Me.”
Previously announced Broadcast
Awards winners were acknowledged during the live telecast.
Mac McAnally (Guitar) won the CMA Musician of the Year for
the 10th time (2009-2015; 2017-2018). He has
been nominated 12 times and has 10 wins. Back in 2008 he missed
winning Musician and Musical Event of the Year in 2009 with “Down The Road”
(Kenny Chesney with Mac McAnally).
In claiming his tenth trophy, McAnally passes the mark set by Chet Atkins --
who was the winner in the previously-titled instrumentalist of the year
category nine times from 1967 and 1988.
THE LIVE SHOW
THE LIVE SHOW
Garth Brooks began the night with a touching tribute to
those affected by the Thousand Oaks tragedy, saying, “Tonight’s show is
lovingly dedicated to the 12 individuals whom we lost far too soon just a week
ago tonight at the Borderline [Bar & Grill] in Thousand Oaks, CA. Tonight
let’s celebrate their lives, let the music unite us with love in their enduring
memory, so please, join me now in a moment of silence.”
Luke Bryan opened
the CMA Awards, performing “What Makes You Country,” and
welcomed newcomers Luke Combs, Lindsay Ell, Chris
Janson, Ashley McBryde, Jon Pardi and Cole Swindell. Ell shredded during her guitar
solo, Janson rocked on the harmonica, and Combs, McBryde, Pardi and Swindell
joined in on vocals before all seven artists united center stage to close out
the first performance of the night.
Brad Paisley and Carrie Underwood took
their hosting to a new level, spoofing “A Star is Born,” singing “Look
Carrie, a star is bored” as Underwood yawned and added “which one, Brad?” They
continued, “Well, Keith just nodded off on Nicole’s shoulder. Shh don’t wake
Chris Stapleton, he just started snoring in the front row. Hey quick record it,
it’s going No. 1.”
Paisley
then reminisced about #BradBlewIt, the trending topic in 2016 where he let the
gender of Underwood’s baby slip. He equally tried the same stunt this year by
asking her rapid-fire girl or boy questions, enticing her to share, to which
she finally said, “Willie, it’s a Willie,” before Paisley took out his phone to
spread #CarrieBlewIt, “trending worldwide,” he added.
Carrie
Underwood Reveals Baby Gender at 2018 CMA Awards
It happened, y’all! Carrie Underwood revealed the gender of her baby
on the way during her and Brad Paisley’s intro at the 2018 CMA Awards.
After performing their intro song, Brad began to press
Carrie to reveal the gender, asking if it was a “Johnny or June,” “Waylon or
Willie,” “George or Tammy,” “Tim or Faith,” and so on. Finally, after about a
full minute of banter, Carrie exclaims, “Fine, it’s a Willie!” as the crowd
erupts in cheers.
Brad quickly took to Twitter to share the news of baby boy
Underwood using the hashtag #CarrieBlewIt, poking fun at the moment when he
revealed the gender of Carrie’s first born and the hashtag #BradBlewIt went
viral.
Paisley
then welcomed Underwood’s “first born” to the stage as a nice surprise, but
instead Mason Ramsey appeared to sing a parody of the yodel that
went viral. Underwood interrupted their singing, “I would like to say, this isn’t
my son.”
Chris Stapleton and Mike Henderson accepted
the Song of the Year award for “Broken
Halos” as Stapleton said, “I didn’t expect this one...I wrote this one
with one of my dear friends and heroes.” He then thanked his wife, family, and
lucky stars that he gets to live in Nashville where “all this cool stuff
happens.”
Jason Aldean and Miranda Lambert took
the stage for a heartfelt performance of “Drowns The Whiskey.”
A
shocked and emotional Combs accepted the New Artist of the Year award, thanking
his mom, dad, girlfriend, and road family, ending with, “God, I love Country
Music, man.”
Thomas Rhett took viewers through “Life
Changes” as he moved from the stage to the audience before the entire
Ravenwood High School Marching Band from Williamson County, TN made their way
to the stage. They were then joined by Thomas Rhett for the grand finale as he
jammed on one of the student's drums while sparks showered the stage.
Dan + Shay took
us on a journey of love, heartbreak and second chances during their
performance. They had everyone raising a glass of “Tequila” as snow fell to
the stage before the piano lit up for the final verse.
Stapleton
took the stage again to accept his second win of the night for Single of the
Year with producers Dave Cobb and mix
engineer Vance Powell, for “Broken Halos” and said, “We wrote
this song about people that have gone on long before their time...and I want to
be thinking about the people out in California right now as we are accepting
this award and want to dedicate this to them.”
Lauren Alaina gave
us “A
Lesson in Leavin’” as she acknowledged Country Music legend Dottie West from the middle of the audience, recognizing
West’s recent induction into The Country Music Hall of Fame.
Kelsea Ballerini convinced everyone to forget about the ex they “thought they’d miss” during her edgy performance of “Miss Me More.”
Old Dominion brought the motel vibes, glowing neon signs and all, to the CMA Awards with their summer smash “Hotel Key.”
Carrie Underwood reminded us that “Love Wins” during her
powerful, color-filled anthem. The Portara Ensemble from Middle Tennessee then
made a surprise appearance during the performance, joining Underwood on stage
for a commanding finale.
The shock on Old Dominion’s faces said it all as they made their way to the stage after winning Vocal Group of the Year for the first time, making sure to thank their fans, the songwriters, and all those who believe in what they’re doing.
Brett Young had us
begging for “Mercy” during his raw, emotion-filled performance. Casually
sitting solo on a stool in the middle of the audience, Young thanked fans for
making this his fourth No. 1 song before recognizing the CMA Broadcast Awards
Radio Station of the Year winners.
Country
Music Hall of Fame inductee Ricky Skaggs and his band Kentucky Thunder took viewers on a journey from one classic song to
another, starting with “Black Eyed Suzie” before Urban
and John Osborne made a surprise appearance for “Highway
40 Blues.” Skaggs and band were then joined by young
instrumentalists Sierra Hull on mandolin
and Carson Peters on fiddle. Paisley joined on guitar
and Marty Stuart on mandolin for “Country Boy.”
Midland made their CMA Awards debut,
honouring songwriter Jerry Reed and
Hollywood legend Burt Reynolds with a performance of “East Bound and
Down,” bringing their traditional Country vibes, dance moves and personalities
to the stage.
Underwood
congratulated Mac McAnally, the Musician of the Year winner, which was
announced at the pre-telecast reception.
Florida Georgia Line and Bebe Rexha’s collaboration
was “Meant
To Be,” and their performance on the CMA Awards highlighted their
record-breaking crossover and No.1 single. Florida Georgia Line and Rexha, who
made her CMA Awards debut this year, were joined by a 21-person orchestra,
providing the audience with a classical rendition of their smash song.
Underwood and Paisley took a moment during the show to thank the firefighters and first responders who are battling the wildfires in California, sending their thoughts to all those affected.
New
Artist of the Year winner Luke Combs shared a story about heartbreak during
performance of “She Got The Best of Me.”
Luke Combs treated 2018 CMA Awards viewers to "She Got the Best of Me" from the rising star's 2017 debut and 17 non-consecutive weeks No1 Billboard Top Country Album, THIS ONE'S FOR YOU.
Winning New Artist of the Year
Combs didn't slow down. The country artist gave a lively rendition of his hot
new single a song about jumping right into the fire of love and coming out
burned but appreciating the experience regardless. Combs' bravado stood strong
on the giant stage as he gave one of the better vocal performances of the
night. The single "She Got the Best
of Me" (writers Combs, Channing Wilson and Rob Snyder) has appreciated
major mainstream radio success with 4-weeks at #1 on Billboard's Hot Country Chart--
the only song of 2018 to do so.
Keith Urban delivered an electric performance of “Never
Comin Down” 10 feet high above the stage with a silhouette of his band
and a rock guitar finale.
Garth Brooks made the worldwide debut of his new song “Stronger
Than Me,” written about his wife Trisha Yearwood,
giving us a glimpse into their almost 14-year marriage. As Brooks sang, the
spotlight shone on Yearwood, and he performed directly to her, a personal
moment that fans experienced alongside the couple.
Brothers Osborne graciously
accepted the award for Vocal Duo of the
Year joking, “We don’t know why we keep winning this...we thought this was
going to Dan + Shay. And if we were in Florida, there’d be a recount.”
Pistol Annies took back their independence
during their rousing girl power anthem “Got My Name Changed Back” as Lambert
played an “authentic washboard.”
Dierks Bentley and Brothers Osborne commanded the stage with a powerful duet of “Burning Man.”
Stapleton,
alongside Maren Morris, Mavis Staples and
Marty Stuart, brought pure soul to
the stage during their medley of Pops Staples’ “Friendship” and The
Staple Singers’ “I’ll Take You There.”
Co-host Paisley’s television debut of his new song “Bucked Off” was filled with rodeo cowboys, a fiddle solo, the always epic Paisley shredding on the guitar, and a nod to hero George Strait.
Stapleton
accepted the award for Male Vocalist of
the Year saying, “I’m really proud of this award, and I've tried really
hard to be a good singer” before thanking his kids who “put up with him being
gone quite a bit and not getting to be as good a dad as I would always like to
be” before telling them he loves them and thanking them for “sharing him with
all these people.”
Musgraves
took the stage for “Slow Burn,” showcasing her effortless vocals and poignant
lyrics.
Two last minute performance
changes found Eric Church added after Kenny Chesney cancelled his scheduled
performance with David Lee Murphy because of a death in Chesney's family
Keith Urban and John Osborne were added to
the Ricky Skaggs performance following Vince Gill's hospitalization
for kidney stones.
Eric Church closed out the CMA Awards with a high-energy, showstopping performance of his hit single “Desperate Man.”
An emotional
Underwood took the stage to accept the Female Vocalist of the Year award,
thanking her family, her Country Music family and continuing, “Thank you God, I
have been so blessed in my life.”
