7 Minutes In Heaven premiered by Your Life
In A Song.
There is more to Bailey Tomkinson than first
meets the eye. Having debuted in the summer of 2018 with the lovely Jewel-esque
folk-country of Hey Ace, Bailey quickly
set tongues wagging with her lush, warm vocals and her undeniable ability to
work pop hooks so effortlessly into her country songs. When delving into her
key influences, it is therefore little surprise to find that genre has never
been a defining factor of her listening experience.
“I’ve grown up listening to Taylor Swift so she’s a big influence,
obviously very relatable to a teenage girl. But I also admire her for
willingness to experiment and innovate with style, that she wanted to expand
the ‘box’. I really admire Kacey Musgraves for the same
reason. I listen to Sinatra. I love John Denver because he’s my Grandad’s
favourite. Also Sam Cooke, Madonna, Abba, Cyndi Lauper, Jewel….”

Chart success: Debut #2 UK Country iTunes Singles Chart (#95 UK iTunes all-genres peak) | Sun 10 March: #39, #43
Although she may currently be Cornwall based, she was born in
Derbyshire before periods living in Brussels and Milan. While it could be
argued that the country tilt that underlines her compositions is a very
American sound, those that listen closely will notice textures and tones shaped
instead by the places she has called home.
“I guess
the thing that living in a different country gives you is the ability to be
adaptable and open. It’s an incredible experience because you become very aware
of both the differences and the similarities between cultures. On a practical
level it makes me a little bit adventurous, if I want to add 80’s synth, for
example, to a song then I’m going to try it, I don’t feel constrained by
boundaries.”
It is in
the lack of sonic limitations that Bailey really stands out
amongst her contemporaries. In a musical period where the face and sound of
country music is undergoing a huge evolution, Bailey brings a
distinctive flair to the field. Despite an awareness that genre classification
has its own limitations, Bailey is
acutely aware of what she brings to country table, and what country brings to
her.
“The
authenticity and storytelling, the musicianship for sure, the whole 3 chords
and the truth thing. I like telling stories especially ones that people can
relate to, I often write from experience so I’m not going to sing about whisky
fuelled bar brawls because I’ve thankfully not had too many of them!”
Having
already tempted audiences with the stunning Hey Ace last summer, Bailey’s quirky earworm 7
Minutes in Heaven is a delicate balance of RaeLynn and Paula Cole.
“The
jumping off point was probably watching the movie ‘13 Going On 30’. In truth, I
just wanted to create something relatable and youthful, with a sense of fun. I
love movies like ‘Dazed and Confused’ and ‘Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist’
for the sense they have where in one, crazy night anything can happen. I
thought it would be interesting to try to capture that feeling in a song.
