The
Billboard 200 chart measures multi-metric album consumption, which includes traditional
album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums
(SEA).
Post
Malone’s HOLLYWOOD’S
BLEEDING netted a third straight week at No. 1 on the Billboard Top 200 Albums Chart
(BB200), as it earned 149,000 equivalent album units in the U.S. in the
week ending Sept. 26 (down 25%), according to Nielsen Music. The album is the
first to spend its first three weeks at No. 1 in nearly a year.
At
No. 2 on the new Billboard 200, Zac Brown Band’s THE
OWL debuted,
scoring the group its sixth top 10 effort. The Owl flew in with 106,000
equivalent album units earned (with 99,000 of that sum in album sales). The act previously visited the top 10
with Welcome Home (No. 2 in 2017), Jekyll + Hyde (No. 1, 2015), Uncaged (No. 1,
2012), You Get What You Give (No. 1, 2010) and The Foundation (No. 9, 2010).
Top
Country Albums now ranks the most popular country albums of the week, as
compiled by Nielsen Music, based on multi-metric consumption (blending traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA), and streaming equivalent albums (SEA)).
10 digital track sales from an
album = 1 track equivalent album (TEA)
“sale”
1,500 on demand song streams from
an album to one streaming equivalent album (SEA) “sale”.
Nielsen
Music compiles the sales and streaming data. Billboard continues to publish pure album sales charts (subscription to
billboard biz ), exclusively comprising
Nielsen’s sales data.
Zac
Brown Band earned its fifth No. 1 on Billboard’s
Top Country Albums chart, as THE OWL (ZB Collective/BMG) flew in
atop the Oct. 5-dated tally with 106,000 equivalent album units (99,000 in
album sales) in its opening week, ending Sept. 26, according to Nielsen Music.
ZBB’s
sixth full-length, and first via BMG, includes collaborations with EDM DJ
Skrillex and pop talents Benny Blanco, Jason “Poo Bear” Boyd, Max Martin, Shawn
Mendes, Ryan Tedder and Andrew Watt, among others.
Meanwhile, the track “Finish
What We Started” features singer-songwriter Brandi Carlile. (Some of the
names above also worked on Brown’s surprise solo set The Controversy, released
Sept. 27.)
CHART

Critical reception for Zac Brown Band’s The Owl:
All
Music
(Rating: 2.1/2 STARS) The ghost of Sir Rosevelt looms over The Owl. Zac
Brown's dance side project released an album soon after Welcome Home, the 2017
album from the Zac Brown Band, but it was buried, not even making an appearance
on Billboard's Top 400. …The fact that a good chunk of the numbers work does
not erase how deeply strange this album is. A band who once celebrated the
simple pleasures of toes in the sand are now singing about champagne glasses
filled with diamonds and, no matter how many times The Owl is spun, it's
impossible to tell how they got to this point.
Sounds Like Nashville (Rating: Mixed) You have
got to hand it to the Zac Brown Band. The highly decorated outfit has long
since given up worrying about what country purists think of its music. It would
be one thing if the Georgia-bred band teamed up with noted
electronic DJs or
pop producers to create a sleek, decidedly un-country album, only to publicly
pass it off as “modern country,” but that’s certainly not what Brown and
company are doing with its latest record, The Owl......The bones of some decent
songs are here, though their mercilessly hidden under sheets of oily, viscous
production. “Me and the Boys in the Band” a southern soul rocker has classic
ZBB swagger, and the pleasantly soft-rock “Finish What We Started,” featuring
Brandi Carlile, is a fine example of what can happen when a bit of boundary
stretching goes well......To steal an earlier ZBB album title, this record
could’ve been named Jekyll + Hyde, due to the musical whiplash you’ll get when
giving it a spin.
Entertainment-focus (Rating 2/5) ….In the
middle of the mess and over-production, there are a couple of gems. Brandi
Carlile continues her quest to save Country music by featuring on Finish What
We Started. While it’s hardly traditional Country, it’s at least listenable,
which is more than can be said for much of the record. ....Sadly The Owl just
isn’t a very good record. Zac Brown Band have shown what they can do in the
past and this set of songs doesn’t come close. If this were the debut album of
a new pop band, it may be received kindlier but this is a misjudged project
from a beloved Country band that attempts to push boundaries but will likely
just turn their fans off. It’s a shame, especially when the beautiful Leaving
Love Behind is the closer and it deserves so much better than being part of
this record.
