Album Chart News (Chart issue week of
June 15, 2019)
The
Billboard 200 chart measures multi-metric album consumption, which includes
traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent
albums (SEA).
Thomas Rhett Scores Second No.1 on Billboard 200 Albums Chart With
'Center Point Road'
Thomas
Rhett notched his second No.1
album on the Billboard Top 200 Album Chart (BB200) as CENTER POINT
ROAD debuted atop the tally.
It
held off competition from the likes of Miley Cyrus and Billie Eilish to top the
summit. The album earned 76,000 equivalent album units in the week
ending June 6, according to Nielsen Music. Of that sum, 45,000 were in album sales. Both
sums represented the biggest weeks of 2019 for any country album.
Center
Point Road was released on May 31 via Valory Records and marked the first
country album to hit No. 1 on the all-genre Billboard 200 chart in 2019.
It’s
the first No.1 on the Billboard 200 since Kane Brown’s EXPERIMENT (126,000
units earned in its first week, with 107,000 of that sum in album sales).
Further,
Center Point Road launched with 33.59 million on-demand audio streams
earned for its songs in its debut week. That marked the biggest streaming
debut week ever for a country album.
Center
Point Road follows Rhett’s last album, and first Billboard 200 topper, Life
Changes. It started atop the list dated Sept. 30, 2017 with 123,000 units, of
which 94,000 were in album sales.
Center
Point Road was led by the single “Look What God Gave Her,” which has so far peaked
at No. 4 on the Hot Country Songs chart, and at No. 6 on the Country Airplay
tally (as of the most recently published lists, dated June 8).
Billboard Top Country
Albums (Chart issue week of
June 15, 2019)
Top
Country Albums now ranks the most popular country albums of the week, as
compiled by Nielsen Music, based on multi-metric consumption (blending traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA), and streaming equivalent albums (SEA)).
10 digital track sales from an album
= 1 track equivalent album (TEA) “sale”
1,500 on demand song streams from
an album to one streaming equivalent album (SEA) “sale”.
Nielsen
Music compiles the sales and streaming data. Billboard continues to publish pure album sales charts (subscription to
billboard biz ), exclusively comprising
Nielsen’s sales data.
Best
Is Rhett To Come: Thomas Rhett's CENTER POINT ROAD debuted at No.1 on the Billboard Top Country Album Chart and Top 200 charts landing his 2nd Billboard
200 #1 album in a row, out now via Big Machine Records.
Center
Point Road is the first country album to top the Billboard all-genre charts in
2019 and follows Rhett's last album Life Changes in claiming the top spot.
The
album is named after the street in Rhett’s Tennessee hometown that shaped and
influenced much of his life experiences and features collaborations with Little
Big Town, Jon Pardi and Kelsea Ballerini.
The
Valory album's total sales and streaming activity was 76,046 in its
first week, with 45,000
in traditional
album sales according to Nielsen SoundScan.
CHART HISTORY:
SELF-TITLED EP (released Aug 28, 2012)

airplay charts.
IT GOES LIKE THIS, released October 29, 2013
was Rhett’s first full-length, which debuted and peaked on Top Country Albums

Released
September 25, 2015 Second LP TANGLED UP,
arrived at No.3 (#6 Billboard 200; 76,000
units) on Oct. 17, 2015 (62,614 copies sold; chart dated Oct 17, 2015) and peaked at No. 2. in its
fourth week (13,200 sales)
Released
September 8, 2017 Marking a first for 2017, a country act ruled the all-genre
Billboard 200 as Thomas Rhett with third full-length
album, LIFE CHANGES (Valory), roared
in atop the chart dated Sept. 30.
The
singer-songwriter scored his first No.1 on the Billboard 200 as well as No.1 on the Billboard Top Country Albums. With 94,032 copies sold, he also recorded his best sales week. (Chart issue week of Sept 30, 2017)
Prior
to Life Changes, It Goes Like This, Rhett’s first full-length, debuted and
peaked at No. 2 on Top Country Albums on Nov. 16, 2013 (36,000 sold); second LP
Tangled Up arrived at No. 3 on Oct. 17, 2015 (76,000 units; 62,000 sold) and
then peaked at No. 2. Rhett made his first of four appearances on the chart with
his 2012 self-titled EP (No. 24).
Rhett
co-produced and co-wrote all the songs on the 16-track Road, which is named for
where the 29-year-old artist grew up in Hendersonville, Tenn. Launch single “Look
What God Gave Her,” inspired by his wife, Lauren, hopped 6-3 on the
airplay-, streaming- and sales-powered Hot Country Songs chart. On Country
Airplay, it ranks at No. 7 (27.8 million audience impressions, up less than
1%).
“The
reception for this new music has been mind-blowing from the start,” said
Thomas Rhett. “In these last two years of life, a lot has happened that gave
me a lot to write about. When I didn’t think I could get more personal, I did.
And I attribute so much of that to the songwriters that really went with me
into deeper territory and to the producers that had a great vision for the
sound of this album. I just feel super honored and super blessed that we got to
make this record with such an incredible team. Huge shout out to the fans
for listening to it and supporting every release along the way. It has been
such a whirlwind, for the album to finally be out and to see this kind of
response is just mind-blowing.”
Critical reception for Thomas Rhett’s Center Point Road:

“As he’s
ascended to country music’s A-list” having “comfortably grown into his role as
a star with something to say” (Billboard),
critics note that the “expansive 16-track record finds him pushing further” (Associated Press).
“The follow-up to 2017’s Life Changes sees the dreamy, often double-denim-clad mixing upbeat toe-tappers with more traditional guitar-led tracks, culminating in a pretty perfect soundtrack to early summer.” - Entertainment Weekly
“On his sprawling fourth album Center Point Road, he’s an everyman charmer, Nashville-style, expanding his palette as he assumes the role of country music jack of all trades.” - Rolling Stone
“If you like big-name country collabs, larger-than-life summer jams and and blockbuster love songs, then look no further than the latest from one of country music’s biggest stars, Thomas Rhett.” - Paste
“He may be on the road more than 200 days a year, playing sold-out shows all over the world. But at the end of the day, home is where this country star’s heart is. And a spin through his new album serves up the proof.” - Parade
“Many of the songs drip nostalgia, ripe with memories he made in his hometown in Sumner County.” - USA Today
“It’s been a relatively quiet year for country music on the Billboard 200, but that’s changed now that superstar Thomas Rhett’s latest album has finally debuted.” - Forbes

Thomas Rhett represents a dilemma for traditional country music fans.
Namely, that he doesn't create much country music that appeals to traditional
tastes. Although "Center Point Road" doesn't entirely reverse that
trend, even during its most overtly pop moments, this new collection of songs
is still a pretty good one. - Country Standard
Time
TR’s all done grown up! Wonderful album mixing styles & genres
superbly in a way that ‘Life Changes’ didn’t. Country’s Bruno Mars gets it
right with a mix of roots, tears, laughs & dancing. His time now - awards

can’t shake the feeling that Thomas Rhett is taking the piss. There were 3

Wheelhouse Records' Runaway June
triumphed
as their smash sing-along "Buy My Own Drinks" became the
first Top 20 radio single by a Country female band or trio in 14 years.
There has not been an all-female group since 2005, when the Dixie Chicks and
SHeDAISY regularly topped the charts, to have a song go Top 20 on Country
radio. Adding to the merriment, the trio was invited by the Grand Ole Opry to
celebrate their album launch day, June 28th with a special performance and
signing party.
"We love being a part of Country music! This has been an amazing
year, being on tour with Carrie Underwood - and now to having our first Top 20
song and to be the first female group to achieve this in nearly 15 years is
insane," said Hannah Mulholland of Runaway June. "Thank you to our
amazing team, and Country radio. We can't wait to get our album out later this
month and share our music with fans out on the road this summer."
Luke Combs’
“Beer
Never Broke My Heart” (River House/Columbia Nashville) ascended to the
Country Airplay top 10
(11-10)
in its fifth week, up 4% to 22.8 million impressions. It’s the quickest trip to
that region of the chart since Sept. 10, 2016, when Kenny Chesney’s “Setting
the World on Fire,” featuring P!nk, jumped 12-8 in its fifth frame. “Beer” is
Combs’ sixth straight career-opening Country Airplay top 10, following five
consecutive No.1s.
NEW ‘GIRL’ IN ‘TOWN’ Trisha Yearwood
scored
her career-best debut on Country Airplay as “Every Girl in This Town”
(Pearl/Gwendolyn) bounded onto the tally at No. 21 (8.5 million
impressions). The song was released and aided by hourly plays on
participating iHeartMedia radio stations on June 6. “Town” is the highest
Country Airplay start for a solo woman in 2019, surpassing Maren Morris’ “Girl”
(No. 28, Jan. 26), and the highest bow by a female artist since Carrie
Underwood’s “Cry Pretty” (No. 20 in April 2018). Yearwood, who has collected 19
Country Airplay top 10s (including five No. 1s), bests her former highest start,
set with her 2006 duet with husband Garth Brooks, “Love Will Always Win” (No.
36)
Sheryl Crow
with
“Prove You Wrong” (Valory), featuring Stevie
Nicks and Maren Morris, entered
Country Airplay at No.33 (5.2 million audience). It’s
Crow’s 11th appearance and highest start, while Nicks makes her chart debut.
Nicks boasted one Hot Country Songs entry: “After the Glitter Fades” reached
No. 70 (and No. 32 on the Billboard Hot 100) in 1982.

‘SHUT’ IS ‘UP’ Following its first full week of tracking, John Rich with “Shut Up About Politics” (Rich

on Hot Country Songs. It surged 4-1 on Country Digital Song Sales (33,000; #20-2 Digital Songs), becoming his first
No.1 in his first solo visit to the chart.
The Five are from the Fox News show
of the same name: Greg Gutfield (who co-wrote the song with Rich), Dana Perino,
Jesse Watters, Juan Williams and Donna Brazile.
It was 1 places behind Lil Nas X's "Old Town Road"
(on
Columbia Records), which logged a sixth week atop the Digital
Song Sales chart with 87,000 downloads sold, up
7%, in the week ending June 6, good for the Hot 100's top Sales Gainer award
for a third consecutive week. On the Radio Songs chart, "Road" rose
3-2, with 98.3 million audience impressions, up 3%, in the week ending June 9.
8th non-consecutive week No1 Blake Shelton with “God’s Country” (Warner Bros./Warner

Previous No.1 Luke Combs with “Beer Never Broke My Heart” (River House/Columbia Nashville/Sony
Music Nashville) held at No.3 (#11-9 Digital Songs) as “Beautiful Crazy” which led for seven weeks fell 11-13 (#46-44 Digital Songs).
Morgan Wallen with
“Whiskey Glasses” fell 2-4 (#9-10 Digital Songs) in his

Kane Brown with

Lee

week.
Of note 39 New 1 - Jessie James Decker with a cover
of “Old Town Road” made a new entry at No.39 on Digital Songs
Blanco Brown
with
“The Git Up” made a debut at No.16. Brown blended
multiple genres during a June 7 set at the Acoustic Corner inside Bridgestone
Arena.
Raised on hip-hop in Atlanta, Blanco Brown would escape to his
grandmother’s home in rural Butler, Ga., during the summer where the
singer-songwriter-producer would listen to country music. Influenced equally by
OutKast and Johnny Cash for both acts' rawness and storytelling, Brown’s love
for both shine through on his country trap viral hit, “The Git Up.”
While Broken Bow Records/BMG, which signed
Brown a year ago, originally planned to release “The Git Up” after Brown made
several appearances during June’s 6-9 CMA Fest, BBR executive vp Jon Loba says
the reaction to Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road” featuring Billy Ray Cyrus sped up
the process. While the song has elements of country, trap and urban
influences, “The Git Up” is listed under country on iTunes and has already been
added to Spotify’s Wild Country playlist.
